Glad someone else noticed. He was given a different role for much of last week's game

That site appears to be someones guide to AFL for newbies. Not the official rules. Grain of salt stuff If there was no contact to the head it was a brilliant shirtfront. Like Balls Grinter on Chris Mew. Play on. However if, as the MRP has deemed, there was contact to the head it should be a free kick and a suspension. Given that it took frame by frame analysis for them to reach that conclusion, the umpires can be excused for missing it. No such excuse for the MRP though. Gutless.

Thanks Macca. I'll have a look

A documentary following up the Iron Curtain athletes of the '70's would be fascinating. What the long term health effects were. What the rate of early deaths were etc. What was actually taken & what the doping regime was - from childhood ? Doubt it could ever happen though - I'd expect few records survived. Now we're probably just left with a few old ladies scratching their balls

Demonland Player of the Year - Round 19
Go the Biff replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Would think Gawn & Viney will take some chasing -
Don't be stupid DA. He's over-rated, a sook and wants to go to Freo Have you learned nothing here ?

That's pretty much it for me too Nasher

Redleg's right. There was one from TMac. Wasn't far from the Melbourne player he intended it for but it was as though he didn't even see the GC player there. His ball use has improved significantly from last year. Hope that trend continues. The best defender in the comp was a turnover merchant a few years ago. Now Rance's disposal is both effective & efficient. The fear leading into this week was that the GC tall forwards would get hold of our defenders but hopefully our mids could sway the game our way. Our mids, at best, broke even but Lynch, Day and 2 Metre Peter combined for 2 goals
-
Agree. I think our forward structure has been horrid all season - including games we won. We are just compressing the usable space into an area that's too hard for the likes of Hogan & Watts to work effectively in and which is easier for opposition to defend.

MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 19
Go the Biff replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Err.....I am slightly worried about any of our defenders in a one on one with these blokes. Hoping our mids can reduce GC's inside 50's to a new world record low. Early in the year I thought OMac was miles off and should be dropped.. He's still a shaky commodity but I'm happy with his progress. His biggest weakness is his weakness. Is a couple of pre-season's away from having the core strength to overpower big forwards and to sprint back to position if we turn it over. -
MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 19
Go the Biff replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
From the reaction on here (not necessarily you WB) you'd have thought OMac was beaten in a dozen one on ones. The Lycett one he made the mistake of grappling with a bigger, stronger player. Should have played off him, jumped & spoiled. THE Kennedy one he misjudged the flight of the ball, as did everyone in the pack bar Kennedy who was hanging out the back. Luck or better judgement ? Anyway, losing a contest (which was a pack not a one on one) to Kennedy is no hanging offence. The bloke is leading the Coleman which suggests he can play a bit. Any others I missed ? -
MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 19
Go the Biff replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Thought ANB showed enough to hold his spot Think VDB has shown nothing all year. Hasn't looked right at any stage -
Pedo's game wasn't as bad as some have made out. His role changed after Spencer got injured. He & Keilty had to share ruck duties against Sandy's 3 ruckmen. I thought they battled manfully. That said, I don't see him replacing Dawes next week
-
He still has to get the footy - and he does. Good player I'm happy with Clarrie & what he's done this year but would like to see him work on other parts of his game. Love to see him played on a wing or off half back in the VFL - just for his education. Next year he'll be a contested ball beast again but it wouldn't hurt if, with extra fitness, he could run to position to receive as well.

Agree with Tony Tea. Smashed in the midfield. Dumb, dumb footy. You have to wonder if some of these blokes even look upfield to see if they are running into space or into a tackle. Shocking handball - near enough is not good enough. You have to hit targets, not ping it in their general direction. Our forward setup has been rubbish all season, even in games we've won. Defence can get turned inside out but that's footy today. Everyone's defence get's turned inside out. Yeah, Mitch White got outbodied in a couple of one on ones but it's his 3rd game.

We have to many left footers with no right side whatsoever. And it's costing us out on the ground. Not sure we need another one

Seconded, Reckon he is going to light it up

Rod Grinter on Open Mike Tuesday Night

I'd like to see the Wallace hit video again. I have a recollection that Grinter got ball first and his fist deflected into Wallace's face. Curious to see if my memory is playing tricks. I saw Grinter at a party that night. His hand was swollen like a balloon. I think he missed more games from infection that TW did with the broken jaw. A very talented and whole-hearted player was Balls. -
The suicides are mounting up as well. Google Dave Duerson and see where that takes you. Poor bastard took himself out with a gunshot to the chest and left instructions that his brain be used for medical research.

Occasionally you see an umpire call "play on, you ducked your head" rather than a free kick being paid. As Sue said earlier, this usually seems to have a short term focus but quickly disappears As such, the penalty for ducking is negligible and the possible benefit is a free kick (incorrectly paid) I'd like to see the ducking issue taken a step further whereby the player who ducks into a tackle, instead of getting the play on call, actually is penalised by a free kick against It will only be stopped if it's disadvantageous to the team. Cough up a few free kicks and you'll soon have ducking coached out of players I used to shudder when watching players like that little ferret from WCE Ashton Hams constantly ducking to receive frees. They risk their health and possibly their lives by doing it. Not to mention the impact on the life of the tackler should the worst happen. I'd imagine it would be hard to live with if you gave someone permanent spinal damage. I still remember the Neil Sachse incident. I never want to see that happen to someone again Applying this to concussions, if you legislate that it is a penalty to duck into a tackle, you won't eliminate concussions but there is every chance that the incidences will be reduced as players will be less likely to put their heads into a position that will concede a free You'll still have accidents - it's a contact sport. But the search for ways to reduce the occurrence should be ongoing forever.

There is not an umpire in the country with a clue how ruck play should be adjudicated Mind you, 99% of ruckmen have no clue how to use their bodies either, particularly at boundary throw-ins Not their fault though A monster was created in when the VFL introduced the line across the centre circle in 1980. As usual, spawned by knee jerk reaction Head Office have been tinkering with the ruck ever since with the result that players and officials alike are clueless It's a particular bugbear of mine The free to Goldstein was a disgrace. Sadly we see far too many of them

Can't really comment on tonight until I see a replay (watched on a phone - not ideal) but against the Pies & Tigers young Hunt didn't just bomb. He put a few kicks to dangerous spots such as the top of the goalsquare. Rapt to see him do well. He was an intriguing selection. Agree with the Scully comment as well. He's been playing good footy for the past year and provides the outside run we lack.
