  1. Caroline Wilson is solid evidence that there is no place for women in football

To think she is the chief sports writer for one of the biggest papers in Australia is absolutely sickening

Caroline Wilson's mail is usually pretty much spot on and she gets things right more often than some of her fellow journos of the male persuasion.

I'd take Caro over Patrick Smith any day of the week.

  2. On the contrary, given they have lost their best defender, and that Buckley is looking at retirement, they'll want to bounce back quickly with the signing of Judd.

Nothing will stop Collingwood throwing everything they have at Judd. I can't see them not being the favourites after they meet with him. They have everything to offer Judd, even if they have little to offer the Eagles. At the end of the day, if Judd has his heart set on Collingwood, he'll go to Collingwood. Worse case scenario, he'll end up at Richmond (it's a lose-lose for us).

It's one thing throwing everything they have at getting him but it's quite another thing managing to produce the goods to the Eagles and, in view of the loss of other key members of their team, they might be plugging up one hole and opening a dyke.

  3. Bomber skipper Matthew Lloyd is offering the world for Judd - Bombers to offer WA boys for Judd: Lloyd.

Essendon are prepared to use their West Australian first-round AFL draft picks Paddy Ryder and Scott Gumbleton in trade negotiations for Chris Judd, according to captain Matthew Lloyd.

Essendon are considered among the front-runners to sign the former West Coast captain and Brownlow Medallist, who will return to his home city of Melbourne.

The Bombers recruited Ryder at No.7 in the 2005 national draft and Gumbleton came to the club at No.2 last year.

They will have the No.6 pick in this year's draft.

"We'll have pick six and where I think West Coast are going to like Essendon is we have plenty of great West Australian young talent at our footy club," Lloyd said on radio station Sport 927.

Just wondering if Lloyd is now the official spokesperson for the Bombers and whether their Board has any say in the matter?

I'd be stunned if David Neitz spoke that way about trading his younger teammates.

  4. Can accept one week with an early plea.

    From the AFL:

Michael Newton, Melbourne, has been charged with charging Paul Bower, Carlton, during the second quarter of the Round 22 match between Melbourne and Carlton, played at the MCG on Sunday September 2, 2007.

In summary, he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.

The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 168.75 points and a one-match sanction.

How does that affect his ability to play for Sandringham or in the NAB Cup next year?

  5. The Dees are paying $1.33 at tab sportsbet, very good money. Surely there is someone out there that will put atleast 200k on us to win this Sunday. It is a certainty. There is no way in the world that Carlton will give up the 1st and even possibly the 2nd draft picks. The Tigers had better lose this weekend, I could not live with the fact that the Blues would snare both Kreuzer and Cotchin, they are deliberately throwing games (cheating) and will be rewarded for it.

In order to counter this move, we the MFC must do the unthinkable and throw the game ourselves, not for the higher draft pick, but only to really [censored] off Carlton and their supporters, if we did Carlton will have literally got nothing out of this year.

In a perfect world we would thump this rabble into the turf and would be rewarded for it with Carlton not getting the #1 pick.

The system needs to be changed now, but even then it would have been too late.

It's too late. Carlton won't be tanking on Monday, they've already tanked with their team selection. Murphy will drop out tomorrow or Sunday morning to finish it all off. I agree with Clyde. The execution will be swift.

  6. Should be removed from the league

An absolute disgrace of a club

That said, surely there must be a contradiction between your message and your signature line "BRETT RATTEN - THE ONLY MAN TO LEAD THE DEMONS FORWARD".

BTW according to Ratten on 10 News Fevola's season is over - a groin injury.

  7. Prahran was in Melbourne's metropolitan zone and legend has it that he played a few practice matches with the Demons but returned to Prahran where he played in the club's VFA Second Division Premiership of 1966 as a centreman. Richmond showed some interest in the young Sheedy and Melbourne released him to the Tigers. The rest is history.

Well that's something I didn't know. We had Kevin Sheedy and let him go to Richmond for nothing and then he went on to play in their successful era while we were weak. I wonder if the club let others go like this?

  8. Besides, Jamar and PJ are both playing.

I would say that the club is going to take an extra player across to Adelaide and the likely candidate for that job is Jamar. Hence, Neaves being position rather glaringly on the interchange for the Zebra twos. (It's either that or Neaves is under an injury cloud - you don't drop your premiership ruckman from the year before to interchnge for the ressies!)

  9. Lyon won't play favourites

FORMER Melbourne captain Garry Lyon says his close friendship with Chris Connolly will have no bearing on any role he plays in appointing a new Demons coach.

I'm sure that Garry Lyon would work in the best interests of the club and not allow his friendship with any particular candidate to override logic. Judging from the fan sites, it looks as if Connolly would not be a popular choice but the coaching position isn't a popularity contest.

For my part, we need something different from whoever is going to be our next coach and Connolly doesn't fit the bill. I'd like to see a complete outsider who has played for a successful club and knows what it takes to win a premiership. Guy McKenna anyone? Brett Ratten? Michael Voss?

  10. Ricky Petterd was operated on Thursday and, according to afl.com.au, the surgeons discovered that it was a cyst that caused his collapsed lung.

    My question are:-

    1) Aside from on the day when he suffered the injury, would the presence of the cyst have affected his health and his ability to play at his best before the incident?

    2) What are the chances of a full recovery and the ability to play to 100% following the surgery?

In the same article it mentions that on Thursday Jared Rivers also underwent surgery to have a chronically-torn and degenerative abductor tendon repaired.

Similarly, what are his chances of a full recovery?

  11. people often say that Newton flies for spectacular marks, and it seems that's ok because daniher has given him instructions to do so if he wants to...

but just a question...does he often stick these marks?

does he has Bate-like sticky hands? does he stick the marks on the lead every time? this is vital if he is to become our next fullforward so i was just wondering...people always seem to be noting that he flies for marks, but rarely do people note how he took one of these high flying grabs.

I believe that the ability to take the hangers is something that comes with confidence and while Newton does have that ability he tends to overdo the attempts at the spectacular. The marks aren't all sticking ATM but they will if the kid is given his opportunity, especially on a bigger ground where he has more room.

  12. This week presents the perfect opportunity for Newton to be selected in the team. This is a game that isn't being played for sheep stations - we're 15th on the ladder and even if we have a good run we're going to finish somewhere in the bottom half of the ladder.

Is there anyone else with better form than Newton who we can put into the side? Miller kicked 6 against Coburg, zip against Box Hill. Newton kicked 2 and 3 after getting bags of 6 and 5 previously.

Lynden Dunn? He has had his chances and will get plenty more but right now you have to go for the player with consistent form. Newton is not a raw 17 year old, he's 20 and despite being a quiet country lad, his time has come and with all due respect to Richmond, it's not a pressure game against a top four contender like West Coast.

Finally, it's the Australian thing to do to give a bloke a go so I'm appealing to the coach and the selectors to do the right thing by the kid and play him on Friday night! Do it for the country mate!

  13. jump onto the magpies forum and have a read of the excuses about the umpires hahahahahaha

some of the most entertaining drivel i have ever read, but oh so satisfying!!!

    suffer scum!!

Some of them are actually quite discerning judges e.g.

    Author: Pieman

    Author Host/IP: dsl-220-253-66-206.NSW.netspace.net.au / 220.253.66.206

Subject: emcguire - go sign up Brock Mclean

IMHO, he will be AFL MVP several times before his career finishes.

  14. I received an email from the club advising that the club has passed the 25,000 member mark for the first time in history. I've deleted the email so I'm not sure now whether that figure includes MCC members but it's a terrific achievement for all concerned at the club.

Now if only the players could just hold their part of the bargain ...
