and Ross Dillon was numer 24 - 24 and 26 our twin targets.

And 24 and 26 = 50, the number of our tall target now. With half that number being our centre half forward today.

  2. I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for the Doggies and wouldn’t want to tease them for losing but it’s what they’re saying at St. Kilda that amuses me -

Don't think I will ever recover if we take McCartin and he flops while Petracca becomes the gun that everybody is predicting.

We don't want to risk taking a raging bull mid/fwd with a hip problem, but we'll take the chance on an overweight, diabetic & injury prone full forward that is 3 inches shorter than the other key forwards coming through the system.

It's so creepy seeing Alan Richardson in a melbourne kit hugging Petracca with a norm smith around his neck. It was like a fever dream watching him rip that final apart.

  3. If anything Clayton was robbed by the lightning strike the week before the Adelaide game. We were coasting ahead when it happened and I don’t think any of our players did well after the return to play. If not for the break, a fit player like Clarrie could have gone on to well over 30 possessions - as it was he finished on 28.

Early days given focus is on GF.

But this kid just keeps on impressing and could be in our draft window

    Isaac Birt

Running midfielder or half back types.  Good pace and skills. Loves a goal.

From the Herald Sun 2021 Draft Guide.

    Isaac Birt Midfielder

    Age: 4/6/2003

    Weight: 70kg

    Height: 181cm

    Club: South Adelaide/SA

    Stats

    2021 SANFL U18 (16 games)

    115 ranking points, 20.6 disposals, 5.5 intercepts, 5.1 inside-50s

    2020 SANFL U18 (15 games)

62 ranking points, 14.7 disposals, 5.7 marks, 11 uncontested possessions

Birt is another young Panther to catch the eye of recruiters, putting together a consistent season on a wing in the under-18s, named in his side’s best in eight of his 13 matches. The left-footer has great skills, delivers with precision inside-50 and wins the ball in the air and on the ground. Birt had 16 disposals and eight marks against WA and produced one of the SANFL under-18 competition’s best performances of the year, tallying 31 disposals, 13 contested possessions, 12 score involvements, 11 intercepts, two goals and 226 ranking points against Norwood in Round 10.

On Mac, I think Richmond will probably take him with their 2nd pick @ 15ish. Can’t see any other team in that range taking the risk as they will have more pressing needs to fill.

There is still a chance he comes through to us. We need about 878 points to bid after pick 20  which we don’t have without using our 2nd rounder. i suspect we would have to move a few players to get all of Cerra, Mac and Taj. It would be quite a steal if the team could pull that off.

On the other hand, Richmond, of all clubs would be aware of the risks involved with taking a player who’s promise lies in the far distant future. They are losing/ditching Mabior Chol who came to them as a thin, lanky project ruckman and took six years to attain the level of NQR.

On Fox Footy’s AFL Tonight, reporter Ben Waterworth covered the draft news with some vision of Mac Andrew who he said was quickly rising up draft boards. He placed Mac at #8. His top 10 -

    1. Nick Daicos (Oakleigh Chargers)
    2. Jason Horne-Francis (South Adelaide)
    3. Sam Darcy (Oakleigh Chargers)
    4. Finn Callaghan (Sandringham Dragons)
    5. Ben Hobbs (GWV Rebels)
    6. Josh Ward (Northern Knights)
    7. Josh Gibcus (GWV Rebels)
    8. Mac Andrew (Dandenong Stingrays)
    9. Josh Rochele (Murray Bushrangers)
    10. Jye Amiss (East Perth)

This one is actually from Michael Alvaro of AFL Draft Central and promoted by Channel 7.

Thanks WJ.  I find the ‘weaknesses’ list interesting.  Given we will want whomever we get to have footy smarts, a strong defensive work rate and quality delivery, it rules many out.  Mac Andrew will not get the luxury of jumping by himself in AFL too often so his weakness of not coping when man on man is a concern.  Much longer term prospect perhaps.

I think we may not trouble the top end of the draft pool this year.

at the moment I can’t really focus beyond the game(s) ahead, good thing TL and JT are on the case.

The Mac Andrew controversy is going to continue right through to the night of the national draft. The club has no control over where he gets picked so why fret over it?

Players could net us picks,  also would expect us to dangle our future first again to get a '21 first rounder in.

Would imagine the Dogs pick will be in play with Darcy to be matched much higher than their 1st rd pick, possibly GWS' pick 13 is worth targeting.

Whether we end up taking any picks we trade in to the draft, or whether we get deep into other trade scenarios will be interesting.

While the club has other fish to fry at this point in time, no doubt JT and TL are working out strategies to improve the club’s draft position as happened last year. No club can afford to stand still.

  9. The story is protected by a firewall that I can’t even break through despite having a subscription but it’s about a Demons flag that flew over the MCG on 19 September, 1964 and has been in the possession of the family of radio presenter John Burns ever since.

A Grand Old Flag Comes Home

“Burns hopes this ’64 souvenir can exorcise Demons

A MUCH-LOVED radio personality hopes to hand back a “grand old flag” – said to have flown above the MCG on the day of Melbourne’s 1964 premiership – as the club seeks to end its 57-year premiership drought.

As AFL finals omens go, they don’t come much more timely than the discovery of a precious piece of Demons memorabilia from that cherished day long ago.”

If you follow the current generation of Sudanese footballers, especially those who spent their early years in Africa, one of the things that’s clear, apart from their athleticism, is that our game isn’t first nature for them. Therefore, they are often at a huge disadvantage in their development years as they adapt to our sport. This might change in future years with the next generation but I believe that most Sudanese youngsters coming through the system need extra time to be able to reach their peak.

Majak Daw has been in the AFL for 11 years. This is Aliir Aliir’s 8th year in the system and Mabior Chol just finished 6 with the Tigers. Daw never really made it. Aliir is now an All Australian but spent his first two seasons in the NEAFL and only started getting a regular game at the Swans late in his third and even after that he had a patchy career till he was traded. Chol is still not a regular at Richmond.

None of the above were top 20 picks but history shows that the development curve for these players is long and slow.

This is where NGA’s can come in and help with getting young kids from multicultural societies more attuned to the way our game is played. Jason Taylor is right when he says the AFL should have thought things out a bit more. From next year, clubs with NGA’s won’t be able to match bids up to 40. Why bother putting money, time and resources into such a program if you’re doing it for other clubs?

The final Casey game of the season, if it takes place, will not be against the Northern Bullants but rather, against Carlton at a date, time and venue to be decided.
