  1. I spoke to some jake's family today and they said that dean bailley had impressed jake during the interview at draft camp and that the demons was his preference

If we do draft him he will take three years to develop. The most promising of the talls in my opinion, but will take some time.

  2. I was hoping the club picked him up along with Blease last year, so I was pretty happy when the club drafted them both. I watched a game in the VFL last season where Casey played at Williamstown, really liked what I saw of him including a 60 meter bomb for goal. He's struggled with knee and shoulder injuries this year from what I've been told/heard, so I think once he has a full pre-season where he can stay fit we will see a fair bit more of his potential. I see him as a half back flanker that can rotate through the middle if needed. He has a pretty good aerobic capacity also so this should allow him to be utilized as a mid when needed.

The only doubts I have on him are his handballing decisions in close. The reason I say this is, last year I watched him in a practice match at Casey and he coughed it up under pressure a couple of times across half back by hand. I'm pretty sure that was due to the speed of the game and him getting used to the pace of AFL level and the fact that as a young bloke your always learning to try and take the right option. Overall I think he will come good provided he gets a clear run with injuries and that he continues to learn more about the inside side of his game. Hopefully he will play 150 games plus in the red n blue.

But would he beat Freak in a beep test?

  3. I dont know about anyone else, but MFC supporters i talk to say our midfield have played better this year than last year & the midfielders say he has been a huge help.

He was a great teacher to the young Bulldog players in his last years. Says to me his is a very good man to have at the club.

Please note West is not I repeat not our midfield coach. Mark Williams has the job and is assisted by West.

  4. Nice thoughts mate. I agree with everything you said about 'Wheels' He should have been in our 150 Legends. A great role model for ALL players in the club. Not just the indigenous ones.

My favourite player over the past 20 years, just pipping the Wiz. In his prime rarely beaten, tough to a point of being kamikazie, Melbourne's best tackler and clean with both hand and foot. Cruelled by injury particularly in 2000 and I think 2002. Here's hoping there is some role for you in the club in the future.

  5. maybe it's the Buddy thing but I can't help wondering what Strawbs O'Dwyer did to get rubbed out of the '88 Grand Final.

Maybe this is one for WJ but can anyone who can remember fill me in?

    How bad was it?

How many weeks did he get?

Would he have been rubbed out of a GF if he played for Colingwood?

Funny thing about recollections. I thought he whacked the current Planning Minister in a ruck duel!

  6. I am making a case forward for DUSTIN MARTIN who plays for bendigo pioneers/ vic. country.

gee this kid seems underated ??

have not seen much press or a case being made since trengove hit the scene ,but this kid is a gun.

He has been single handedly holding his own tac side together.

his stats have been as good as scully's. with more b.o.g.'s

IN TAC CUP. d.martin has averaged 26.6 disposals in 10 games ;;played 11 but( 1 game injured )

he was no "1" best in 4 games , and 1 each of 2nd, 3rd & 4th best..out of 10 games playing for a bottom club ie; flower esq.

    in the u 18's champs.for vic.country he averaged 21.4 disposals with a ,ke. of 63% & de. 68%.

    (kicks effective= ke%; disp.effective= de% )

went inside 50 on 27 occasions ,he is a solid taller attacking onballer who kicks both feet.

best on ground with 28 disposals against WA in grand final game at edihad..who were u18 champs.

all australian;picked in centre..( how he did not get MVP for vic country bemuses to the extreme)

garry rohan got mvp with 12 ave. disposals

whereas "scully" played 6 games for his tac club.dandy. he averaged 26.3 disposals.

was "1" best only once for dandy stingrays with one each of a 2nd ,4th & 6th best..

his stats for u18's champs were 25.4 ave disposals with a ke. 61% & de. 76%.

and mvp for vic/metro.- ALL AUSTRALIAN. r/r

    OBVIOUS GUN AND NO 1.

and lastly "TRENGOVE" u18's champs.had 22.8 disposals ave.

    with a ke.70% & a de. 72%.

and MVP FOR SA.AND please note he has mentioned in interview how he would like to stay in his home state of SA.

probable no 2 pick but !!!can u envisage him spending the next 10 years away from his home ???

is an obvious quality kid and any club and supporter would be rapt to have but is he a risk of doing a "thompson" ??

no problem with one D.MARTIN WANTING TO GO ANYWHERE BUT VICTORIA..

will be very interested on how he is rated by prendy and clubs generally..

just a bit of by play for anyone who was interested and unaware ..

  7. Fair enough. I've never actually seen Newton play or train.

I think a bit of aggro is fine if it doesn't affect his performance & isn't a result of a poor performance.

But it sounds like it may be just that.

    We shall see.

Regarding Newton, I remember a Sandy game a couple of years back where he told Paul Wheatley to go and get effed after Wheatley tried to tell him he should have done the team thing.

  8. And the guys who have been below their best for a while, will need to rekindle some of their prev form/potential.

I take your point about watts and yes on paper he is probably in the top 3-4 without playing a game. But for 09 his impact on the game will likely be measured thus we need to look at others for 09.

Moloney, Rivers, Brock, sylvia etc are the others. If these 4 all play 20+ games and stay fit we will be a lot more competative then what people think.

If it is truly 'best' to worst it should look like this:

    1 Jared Rivers

    2 Brock McLean

    3 Brad Green

    4 James McDonald

    5 Matthew Whelan

    6 Russell Robertson

    7 Aaron Davey

    8 Paul Johnson

    9 Brad Miller

    10 Paul Wheatley

    11 brent Moloney

    12 Colin Sylvia

    14 nathan Jones

    15 Matthew Bate

    16 Matthew Warnock

    17 Simon Buckley

    18 Cale Morton

    19 Clint Bartram

    20 Austin Wonaemirri

    21 Daniel Bell

    22 Lynden Dunn

    23 Mark Jamar

    24 Simon Buckley

    25 Michael Newton

    26 Ricky Petterd

    27 Addam Maric

    28 Stefan Martin

    29 Jack Grimes

    30 James Frawley

    31 Kyle Cheney

    32 Tom McNamara

    33 John Meesen

    Based on potential:

    1 Jack Watts

    2 Cale Morton

    3 Jack Grimes

    4 Col Sylvia

    5 Brock McLean

    6 Col Garland

    7 Ricky Petterd

    8 Tom McNamara

    9 Addam Maric

    10 Sam Blease

    11 James Strauss

    12 Jamie Bennell

    13 matthew Bate

    14 James Frawley

    15 Stef Martin

    16 Simon Buckley

    17 Michael Newton

    18 John Meeson

    19 Austin Wonaemirri

    20 Kyle Cheney

  9. Big Red, I think your backline is a bit tall! You gotta have Wheels there. He is hard, disposal excellent and rarely beaten one-on-one. Apart from that he can run and carry and leads by example. Other than that only three key defenders are necessary so one of Garland, Frawley, Martin or Rivers misses out. Other than that is looks good!

    B Garland Martin Wheatley

    HB Rivers Frawley Green

    C Buckley McLean Morton

    HF Sylvia Miller Davey

    F Watts Newton Wonaeamirri

    Fol Jamar Bruce McDonald

    Int Johnson Jones Dunn Grimes

    Emg: Maric, Petterd, Whelan

This is the line up I would like to see round 1. Just some clarifications prior to being chastised:

I do not rate Bate, Bartram, Bell and Moloney and believe other players should be played in their place if we are to improve our ladder position. Yes they will have good days but their decision making and disposal will let us down more often than not. The same could be said for players such as Buckley or Bruce but the positives with both players outweigh the negatives for mine.

I rate Whelan as a footballer but believe he is very limited in his role as a back pocket and would prefer to see more versatile players such as Garland or Wheatley fill that role where required. His body is also a risk and I would prefer to see other players advance ahead of him this season.

I doubt Robertson will be available for round 1 and am doubtful he will get even close to his best until mid season if it all. We need to push games into Newton and see if he has the attitude to make it. I am confident that we will play Watts early on as well if he shows anything during the preseason matches.

I am sure at least one of the first or second year players will stand out in the NAB matches and obviously this will change once players are seen in match conditions.

  10. I wouldn't, at least not for a pick in the 70s.

Some of the guys mentioned in this thread might be in trouble at the end of next year, but there's only so many old and non-performing players you can remove from a list in two years. We've retired, traded or de-listed Bizzell, Bode, Brown, Ferguson, Godfrey, Holland, Johnstone, Neitz, Neville, Pickett, Ward, Weetra, White and Yze, plus hopefully Carroll, since the end of 2007 ... that's fifteen players.

Suggesting Whelan be delisted is among the stupidist ideas I've heard. He is tough, can tackle properly, is rarely beaten on-on-one, and hits targets when he gets rid of the pill.

Shows more leadership in his left nut than Bruce ever will. Make him captain until Brock grows up.

  11. Cliche-ridden drivel delivered by a hack journo.

Nothing new apart from toying with the idea of changing the jumper. What a great move that would be with our club's heritage.

I for one embrace our stereotype. I love that we are modest, thoughtful and seemingly aloof. We have an air of superiority about us and a level of intelligence that the average Narre Warren living Collingwood supporter will never understand.

Let's not become toothless ignoramuses under the guise of being passionate.

In the 50s we did have great players, so did Richmond in the 70s, Carlton in the 80s. It's a different era. Nothing wrong with the way Lyon, Schwarz, jacovich, Farmer, Davey, Viney, Neitz, Robertson, Sean Charles, Whelan, Woewodin et al play(ed).

Our time will come, we just have to hang in there.
