Just a thought...
With our disposal being so poor into the forwardline, how about using Bowey or Salem as a HFF. They are boh excellent users / kicks usually. I also think we really need to look at our wingman's kicking... I don't want to see Langdon kicking a ball more than 15m high into our fwd line ever again.

My 5 word or under analysis
Gawn - outplayed but tried
Viney - no real impact
Petracca - couldn't get involved
Oliver - wasteful with ball
Kozzie - more cold than hot
May - well played mate
Lever - did his job
Bowey - barely seen
McDonald - did he even play?
Chandler - Bedford is much better
McVie - damn good year
Salem - still off his best
Spargo - one of his best
Smith - tried
Hunter - ok, nothing special
Langdon - slipped too often
Jordan - move him on
Tomlinson - good luck next year
Neal-Bullen - little impact really
Rivers - quiet game, but big future
Fritsch - underdone but still classy
Sparrow - one tough unit
Schacke - did as much as TMac
Ump # 22 - Carlton's 3 votes

Trade JJ, Spargo and Harmes at end of year.
Woe will be good, but not quite there yet.
Sparrow in
Clarry in
Fritsch in
Petty was a fwd as a junior... no surprise to me he can play there.
I like Hibbo, but bloody hard to drop McVie or Bowey for him. Probably more a match up thing to get a game.
ANB frustrates the heck out of me, but you can't drop him. His motor is huge and his pressure when he doesn't have the ball (mostly) makes up for his skill errors.
Smith perfect sub. Injury history a risk for full minutes regularly. But can have impact at either end when he comes on.
Where do you fit Grundy if he does actually come in? That's the hard one...

Petty played as a forward in juniors... Can pack mark better than most (better than anyone else at MFC except perhaps for Gawny when in form). I say try him early on in the season. T Mac can play wing with his engine. Get Turner in. Looked good in his first game before the concussion. JVR can be given some more time. IMO he plays 10-12 games in 2023.

Some thoughts.
ANB can clearly run, add pressure, tackle etc. But when we has/gets the ball, his disposal is not even up to vfl level. Only 2 goals for the season so far for a small forward. He's just not up to it. We simply cannot win another flag carrying him in the side.
Turner showed quite a lot in half a game. He's gonna be a good'un.
Brayshaw, if it wasn't for him, we'd have lost by 12+ goals
Spargo was ok early. One of the best tacklers in the comp.
Oliver has gone back to hand balling to team mates under pressure.
Gawn is doing everything he can... but clearly not 100% fit. His pack marking has disappeared.
Petracca is playing like he now believes he's a superstar. Not accountable enough
Petty is as good a defender as anyone out there. Can play forward too (he did as a junior).
Salem needs more games
Pig was good for 1st game back
BBB needs to really hit packs hard. Probably never going to happen though. 1 dimensional.
Bowey might need a spell in the 2's. Rivers back in for him.
Sparrow is trying hard, it's just not working right now for him.
Jackson has been twisting into tackles the last month... just kick the f_n ball. He's nothing more than an adequate ruck. Better as a forward and or / mid.
Kozzie is trying to be a millionaire every time he goes near the ball. Go back to basics.
Langdon is clearly still not right.
Lever has never been a lock down defender. Very out of sorts.
Fritsch is our best forward. Poor delivery into him doesn't give him much to work with.
Jordan is doing just enough. Needs to transition quicker.
Harmes has only ever been a back up on baller. he's playing at his level - although to his credit he copped one late and kept trying.
Mitch Brown - the answer to a question nobody asked.
Viney keeps trying. Disposal has always been poor although that right foot snap goal was very un-Viney like.

We need to choose a mid size / tall as the emergency player, picking a small just doesn't work.
Opposition teams have worked our mids out. Maintained high pressure through the middle means we bomb it in and we don't have the forwards to pack mark. They then rebound quickly.
The last 3 weeks the opposition's behind the ball structure has been very well set up. Which also stops us moving forward quickly.
Not having May means our behind the ball structure isn't the same. One of our most important players.
Tom McDonald. I've been very critical of him in the past, however he adds so much to our team balance. Will be sorely missed for most of the rest of the season.
Weid - get rid of him. Simply not up to it.
Tomlinson - probably should have been the emergency. Can play back and can run for a bigger guy.
Rivers - needed a spell. dominated in the 2's. comes back in.
Van Rooyen - Should get given a chance soon, might not have earned it yet - but looks to have the ability.
Joel Smith - Handy when he's on the park. Unfortunately injured too often.
Hunt was unlucky to be dropped, however he's not in the best 22 when we are at full strength.
Dunstan is too slow and lacks polish. I reckon we only took him as a cover for Jack Viney, who rarely plays a whole year.
Majak may just get a call up soon.

Summary on a few:
ANB... love the effort he brings in defending/pressure, but how often does he miss a goal he should kick, how often does he choose the wrong option, how often does he try to be the unselfish guy and f__k it up. Somebody has to get in his ear and get him to be absolutely ruthless. He annoys me more than the Weid.
Melksham - never to play in the jumper again.
Weid - should never play in the jumper again
Spargo - not a winger
Sparrow - not a winger
BB - still has plenty of points on the board
Viney - love him, but completely went missing in 2nd half
Trac - must be off / carrying something. rest?
Dunstan - ok as a back up player for Viney, but that's about all
Gawn - Tried hard. Maybe needs a bit of a rest
Oliver - can't handle a good tag. Still a jet though
TMac - amazing how much extra balance he brings when in the side. Can play both ends. Missed him today when May went down.
Kozzie - Get him into the centre for bounces more often
Jackson - needs to kick the damn thing

In: Lingers, TMac, Tomo, Harmes, Salem (how far away is he?)
Out: Milkshake, Weid, May, 2 of Hunt/Rivers/Dunstan
-
Brayshaw back to the wing when Salem returns, (Salem likely in for Hunt). Viney in for Dunstan (who didn't do much wrong). Lever in for Smith.
ANB had a complete stinker tonight. When the heat is on, he holds the ball for a little too long and gets caught out. Weids, although he kicked 3, still isn't a lock. BBB is.
How much are (most of) our smalls improving - Sparrow, Bowey etc. Even Hunt had a good one tonight.
4 points to lock in... Bank it away... but imagine if we played 10% better tonight. That's an 80-100pt thrashing of a team that is still in the mix.

(when we win)...Goodwin to give his medal to Chunk on the podium...

Having Max bring his contested marking to the goal square instead of the wing, with Jackson and Daw rucking would be an upgrade on out current tall forward set up…
I said exactly this to a couple of mates and on fb and got laughed at... Max clunking marks as a deep FF, as well as rucking in the Fwd line gives his body a rest compared to the usual kms he does. Jackson appears in better form at centre bounces than Max. ie. we seem to win more centre clearances with LJ in the ruck at the moment. Bring Majak in as a 2nd ruck to use when Jacko needs a break... He's had basically 4-5 BOG's in the 2's in the ruck...
There's certainly worse options to go with than this...

Maynard and DeGoey were absolutely flying today. DeGoey smashed us in the centre.
More than half of our team we're spectators today. The Pies played hungry like we were early in the season.
The low kicks into our backline from the pies were from a total lack of pressure from our mids. Which then doesn't help our rebounds with May/Lever etc. Not something we've let happen much this season.
Sparrow - looked slow and like a deer looking into headlights
Fritsch / TMac / Weid - gave nothing. Nor did Kozzy really.
JJ and Dogga can hold head high
Reset, get Viney and BBB in after the bye and go again.

Salem sorely missed. In for Jetta next week. BBB in for Weids. Viney in for JJ.
Bombing it into fwd 50 didn't let TMac, BF and Weids to get into the game at all.
Well played Adelaide. Hungrier when it counted.
Umpiring late in the game was deplorable.

"Round three sees the [Casey] Demons head to Marvel Stadium for a Thursday night feature game against North Melbourne."
Changes for MFC vs North should be telegraphed by who lines up in this match on Thursday night ...
no mention of Daw as best on ground... and he was by a fair margin

next 5 games:
v Rich (MCG)
v Nth Melb (Blunstone)
v Syd (MCG)
v Carlton (MCG)
v Adel (AO)
Even if we drop against Richmond, we could still easily go 9-1...

LJ is a jet, no doubt.
He was bullied by Tomahawk in the ruck from throw-ins last week in the backline. Tomahawk just too strong atm.
LJ seems to be filling out his frame almost weekly. 2-3 years from now... lookout... I just hope we can keep him from going back to WA.
I'm just waiting for the day he starts clunking those big grabs consistantly.
-
May, Fritta back in - if fit and one of Weid / BBB in this week. IMO BBB first. Weid to inconsistant so far.
Out: Jordan, Petty, Brown - all reasonably unlucky, although JJ looks like he needs a rest.
Tmac to fwd Wing, Brayshaw and Melksham to share JJ's role on ball and fwd flank.
ANB has had his best start to a season, but other than his fwd pressure what does he bring that others don't? I rate Sparrow much higher. ANB's disposal is usually very ordinary...

We have no way to really damage any team going into our F50 - No X factor. Will not win another flag without it.
Maybe Petty, Kosi and McAdam can give us something.. JVR has big question marks over him now. All (media) talk. Now has to deliver.
Gawn totally outplayed tonite. Doesn't respond well to being manhandled. Props to Grundy - well played.
Clarry needs game minutes but was mostly ok.
Schacke - VAFA player at best. Probably wouldn't get a game at Old Xav's.
Chandler - downhill skier
Laurie - subbed off and should never play again
Langdon - should be worried about keeping his spot when Hunter returns
Billings - played 30 mins. Need to see more before can give opinion
Spargo - i'd usually defend him, but he's done
Sparrow - couldn't get near it tonite
Rivers - off also
Howes - good start
Windsor - very promising
Trac - had patches but was off
Viney - cannot deny effort.
Salem - just ok, but was a bit too fancy in slippery conditions
Bowey - underrated small player. Super tough.
Fritsch - very fickle.
May - sound, but is nearly at the end.
Lever - mistakes costly
Tomo - just ok.
ANB - always tries and does the 1%ers, but his skills have never been good enough.
McVee - pass mark just.
Really missed Kosi and Angus tonite IMO.
Might just renew the old Season Pass at Buller.
