  1. I think it is completely obvious that his confidence is shot. Posters say his attitude is like he wants to be in Adelaide. I disagree completely. I believe if he kicks a couple of goals in a row we will then see a completely different player. The question is: should he go to Casey to get those goals?

  2. Thanks for the hint of them being in YouTube which I didn't know.

Things us older supporters love about that era: umpires who don't affect the result. Holding the ball paid whenever it is there which makes players look to get the ball out and keeps the play open (Alastair Clarkson has said that if they paid holding the ball, a lot of the present scrums would go). Umpires who can, and do, bounce the ball all over the ground without fanfare and manage to get the ball to bounce high and straight.

And in our team: all of it but with special love to the great Robert Flower, and also to Sean Wight who seems to have invented the spoiler/interceptor role 30 years before Jake Lever reinvented it.

In 1988 we got knocked out by Fitzroy in our first pre season night fixture.

I think that was in 1989 when we beat Geelong in the pre season Panasonic Cup.  Hughes and Wight missed the first 2 and 6 games respectively that year. We ran out of steam in 1989 losing 5 of our last 6 home and away games, had a nice win over the Pies in the elimination final at Waverley but were badly beaten by Geelong in the semi when we had 10.10 put on us in the last quarter.

Conversely in 1990 we ended the season in a blaze of glory, winning 8 games in a row heading into the semi final Vs West Coast. Not sure what happened that day but as you said we were right in the mix in 1990.

In 1990 We either win, or got thrashed. What I mean is, we were either right on our game or right off it.

Because of the draw between Collingwood and West Coast, we had an extra unplanned week off and when we eventually played, you could tell from the warm up that we were off our game - and so it transpired.  I thought that year was the one that got away.

  4. Completely agree about Warren Dean - he was great but had a crippling knee problem.

I am also a believer that we would have won against Carlton - and certainly would have put up a better showing than Hawthorn.  The character of that team was amazing.

If these games are available anywhere I too would love to know about it.

  5. If Clarry is out, I don't mind. He needs to get his hand right. He is too important for the rest of the season.

I'd like to see Petty play a somewhat defensive role on Harris Andrews. Keep him out of it and  Brisbane are in real trouble.

The thing I'd like to know and maybe you guys can help me is why does Ben Brown work better in this setup than last year's?

In games last year my memory is the ball hitting the deck and seeing him lumber after a running oppo defender exiting our 50. This year there doesn't seem to be a situation where that happens and we see him more for the 'run at the ball' marker that he is.

Is it a case of having more numbers in those areas if it hits the deck or maybe not having as high defensive line as previously? Or something else?

I suspect he is much healthier this year - his knee is more under control.

    Really? .

I can't recall how he went in his second game, but ny recollection is he was terrific in his first game until he had his jaw broken just before half time.

I think he will be a gun. Smart, quick off the mark, competitive and zones off well.

And whilst I agree he can play an intercept role now, ultimately i think he will become a key position defender.

He's 6.5 in the old and given he is only 22 will fill out in the next few years.

I have a completely different recollection of that game.

  8. As far as I have seen, Turner for TMac is not like-for-like. Turner is a floating interceptor, not someone who could play on eg Harry McKay. And although I always hope for the best, so far he has done nothing in the one or two games he has played to justify pinning our hopes on him.

  9. I'm on the side of resting Clarry -- he is clearly hampered and we need him to be right - so let the hand heal. I know it is not like for like, but perhaps bring Tommo back in as he is pretty versatile. Maybe bring Salo back into the middle - even though I don't think it really suits him and put Tommo in defence. Perhaps Salo could play a run-with role on Neale.

Dees after 4 games should again have a few players up in the votes. I’ll try to update weekly or periodic.

    v Swans

Likely no Dees players get votes

only JV7 could be considered for a vote

    v Dogs

    Likely votes

    M.Gawn 3 C.Oliver 2 S.May 1

Trac might get a 1 vote

    v Hawks

    Likely votes

    C.Petracca 3 M.Gawn 2 B.Fritsch 1

    v Port

M.Gawn 3. ANB 1 (Butters will probably get the two votes). Trac might squeeze a 1 vote but unlikely.

so after 4 rounds likely Gawn to have between 5-7 votes, Trac 3-5 votes and Clarry 2-3 votes

Hope you are right. Max is still at 100/1 - same as Grundy which is ridiculous -  and I am on him.

  11. I mentioned that incident in another thread. Apparently, Viney was NOT intimidated by a much older, seasoned veteran breaking his jaw - he wanted to go on with it!

Too many bandages in the team as they ran out for my liking

  12. I would rest him this week if there is any real problem - and it seems that there is. The Adelaide mids are not threatening. He is too valuable to risk.

If that was the requirement for a free, Gawn would get 100 of them a game. He gets deliberately smashed into at every contest.

As he should. It is clearly a deliberate tactic that some teams are adopting : to physically attack him at every chance. It was great to see an umpire actually give him the protection the rules call for.

Towards the end of the 2021 season ANB had a free kick for goal about 40 metres out on the boundary.
He kicked a banana right through the middle.

The Dees never looked back thereafter.

He regularly nails those shots. He might even be the best in the league at them.

  15. My two favourite Viney moments - one is that tremendous goal after wrenching the ball off McInerny. But the other, which I only heard about, was from before he played AFL. He was playing under age in the VFL and, as we know, there are often some pretty seasoned older players in that comp. One of them - I think from Geelong- hit Jack, then aged 16 or 17, and broke his jaw. Was Jack intimidated? - no, he wanted to go on with it!!

His father was a great player. Jack is better.

I hope he has lots of kids!!
