Just an old man’s quirk, but I’ve always had a soft spot for Demons number 23.

Some of my favorites -  players who had a bit of X factor or were fan favorites in their day:

    Geoff Tunbridge

    Kelly O’Donnell

    James McDonald

    Kevin Dyson

and of course Clarko when he was with us.

James Jordon certainly fits the enigma of number 23. Will be the only player ever in V/AFL to win a premiership without setting foot on the ground in the Grand Final.

    Vince?

What are you talking about?  Half a season !!! He has been training since Day 1 before Cmas.

Like before 2021 he is doing extra to try to ensure he is as fit as can be. The track watchers have already indicated he is looking and performing back pretty well and he is doing the running part really well.

You have chosen to recall his poor recovery in 2020 after his leg issues in 2019.

And completely forgotten his excellent contribution especially the  first two thirds of the season to our Flag in 2021.

Also last year his form up till he was injured was again  very good. As most smart Demon fans have realised our forward line missed Tmac's marking, competing and Body work which enabled our smaller forwards ( and Fritta) to capitalise on his presence. No doubt we would have gone further had Tommy been playing all year.

He will be special for JVR as he starts his career this season and assist his development no end as well as star himself again.

Not doubting his ability mate… also well aware of his leg issues that year. But he wouldn’t have been training in full capacity before Christmas which was my main point.

Agreed on his great form last year and us missing him dearly, but I reckon it just highlights the additional need for younger replacements (hence the JVR argument).

I hope he kicks [censored] this year because we will need it, just won’t be surprised if he isn’t playing at his very best given his injury recovery hampering part of his pre-season preparation. But I guess it’s all just crystal ball stuff.

  3. All well and good but that will mean he’s only had half a preseason. What if he performs poorly and everyone starts calling for him to be dropped? IIRC before 2019 he was in a similar position fitness-wise and barely fired a shot as a result (just like the whole team that year). Doesn’t hurt to play JVR if the coaches deem him fit and ready. We really do need to start blooding more youth up that end after all.

I'll go you one better, we need to assemble a panel of former MFC list managers and heads of the FD in the next 24 hrs who understand football and can hold Lamb accountable to his actions. In future they will also bar any trades that can't be justified, this will be known as the concil of MFC trading.

    Bring back barry prendergast

Geez... a lot of posters on Land claiming scoops of late and getting them very wrong. All good for a bit of fun, can't be right all the time!

The only poster I’ve seen who’s gotten the scoops (almost) consistently correct is Goodwindees.

    Stupid contract.

We’ll be paying him to podcast or play for someone else way before it’s done.

One paced, can’t kick, can’t man up. What are we thinking?

A panic move by the club because they’re sad LJ is leaving.

“Look at me, I’m so different and quirky for having this opinion!”

  7. I reckon it’s pretty evident that Brayshaw’s just trying to pump up his future contract with the club as well as the position issue. Clarry did the same thing 2 years ago and people were freaking out (meeting with Carlton etc) but now he’s a demon for life.

I have a theory that isn't on here so I'll opinionate and if wrong happy to be pulled up.

Firstly I don't believe we are in a loading phase. I think we have held on to a game plan far too long that has been dissected and beaten and we refuse to change.

Secondly the major difference for me is mental fatigue. We are not handling being the "hunted". All our losses we have been trying to hold on and our opposition has run over the top of us. It's hard work. It's not as much fun and all we feel after a win is relief. Not a natural uplifting joy. Well certainly not as much as last year. We are not "loading" we are tired. Mentally fatigued. This is easy enough to fix but Goodwin and co. are super slow to do anything at this point.

Thirdly "Jimmy's wing is Broken". Our defensive wing has been picked apart and is not working anymore. We are slow and predictable and our turn-overs here are killing us. Jimmy Jordan whenever he gets the ball stops and props then kicks down the line to a tall. There is no speed or dare. Jimmy is a lovely bloke but in the words of Jack Elliot he is "a good ordinary footballer". He needs to be re-invented. This wing is the source of the problem with other aspects of our game including Salem, Bowey and Brayshaw. This brings me to number four

Brayshaw is not being used to his capacity. Goodwin said he was reluctant to move Brayshaw. He should try the opposite. Every position he has played he has mastered. He is a GUN. Look at the way Dogs use their midfielders. Duncan is played everywhere. Bont goes wherever he feels he is needed. They are much more flexible. Brayshaw being stuck in the backline is stupid. No wonder he wants to leave. He should be played in a variety of positions as required from forward to back. His marking is a weapon. His strength is similar to a Dusty. Leave him one out in the forward line and he'd win every contest.

Furthermore if we lose Brayshaw I'll be ropable. We need to sign him up and promise him the next Captaincy when he and Max think it appropriate.

So for a start Jordan out. And move Brayshaw.

    1. Who said anything about brayshaw wanting to leave? There’s no evidence of that.

    2. Assuming he did want to leave, why the hell would you give the captaincy to someone apparently not fully committed to the club as a means of enticing him to stay? That’s bad for culture. Just look at what happened with Congilio and GWS.

    3. Brayshaw has had his best season in four years playing in his current position, almost a borderline all-Australian. Hardly someone who is not being used to his capacity.

    4. The whole “we don’t want it enough”,  argument is overly simplistic, and the fourth-quarter fade-outs would be a result of physical fatigue, rather than mental, which is strong evidence of a loading phase. That being said, teams working us out could very well also be a factor in our current form.

Yawn. Cheap gag. Winning will cover over a multitude of sins. Pert is not alone, but he and the board are like a politician focused on the now & re-election, with no interest in the long term. Enough for some. A couple of flags in the bank and it’ll be enough for me. We can try to recover from the mistakes once they’re gone. I’d prefer we do better in all facets now, but I guess I’m greedy. Long may our reign live on.

^ Did I just bait the baiter?

  10. Melbourne supporters who say that was the most “pathetic” football we have played in a long time and that we’re “not a proper team” don’t have a basic understanding of football.

Melbourne are a system-based team. This means that our team is designed to play the same way week in, week out. We could be like Geelong and change tactics every week to smash bottom sides by 80+, but that’s what let’s you down in finals. That’s why teams like Geelong have done nothing in September.

Some of our fans have no idea just how good we have it. We had the same type of  performances against bottom teams last year and what happened? We won the [censored] premiership. So those people suggesting that we’re not gonna perform against the better teams as a result of how we played today are absolutely clueless about the game.

    enjoy the ride fellow Demons!!!!!!!!!

I dunno mate, this new bloke doesn’t seem to be bagging Goody anywhere near as much as dr.D used to. I reckon he’s more like the second coming of Olisik

Jimmy Stynes won a Brownlow - when Max wins one they’ll be on par

Yes, but he won the Brownlow in an era when it wasn’t only midfielders winning it. Much harder (sorry, almost impossible) to win it these days if you’re not a midfielder.

True. I just think we should recognise that we aren't in form. We're playing like trash. We won't get close to Stkilda if we play like this.  People love talking about gears. When will we get into gear? If not round 7, round 10? round 18? round 23? finals? Who knows.

    Do you ever stop complaining…

Sorry, I meant the original strain not Delta, my bad there. Edited my post, but you beat me to it!

Just think the whole 'mild' thing has been totally oversold. How do we know the long term effects are mild when it's only a few months old? Agree the evidence says if you're vaccinated the chances of severe disease or death are low, I just don't agree with it being labelled mild or benign when that's not been the experience of most people I know and we still have people dying from that strain.

I mean, we have to find ways to move forward and get on with things, but for mine, I don't think labeling it as mild is helpful to the people dealing with it.

The whole ‘mild’ thing has been so misinterpreted. The message was that it was ‘mild’ in the sense it was milder relative to delta. But some knobs ended up twisting that and now we have people saying it’s almost completely harmless, which it is not.

On the bright side, on a case-to-fatality ratio, omicron is now less deadly in Australia compared to the flu thanks to the immunity we’ve built up against it.
