It might have felt that way, but its not the case that virtually every ball was bombed in.

If it was the case it would be reflected in the shots at goal data (also in the charts that show inside 50 entries and where goals were kicked from, which I've seen but couldn't find with a quick search).

Given how infrequently we jagged pack marks in those games (or any games really, given how hard it is to take a pack mark these days) and factoring in goals from free kicks and pings from 40 -60 metres, if we bombed it long to a pack say 90% of the time, logic suggests the numbers would be something like:

    • 70% of scores from general play (eg crumbing packs, stoppage goals, running shots etc)
    • 30% from set shots (marks, usually one out or on the lead, and frees).

In the blues finals loss we were aprox 50% from general play and set shots.

In our loss to the Pies, a game that was high pressure and slippery, we were aprox 40% from general play and 60% from set shots.

    Shots at goal

    Team Shots G B T Acc.
    General Play
    Melbourne 15 4 9 33 26.7
    Carlton 8 3 2 20 37.5
    Set Position
    Melbourne 13 5 6 36 38.5
    Carlton 13 8 4 52 61.5

    Team Shots G B T Acc.
    General Play
    Melbourne 9 3 3 21 33.3
    Collingwood 4 2 2 14 50.0
    Set Position
    Melbourne 14 4 5 29 28.6
    Collingwood 11 7 3 45 63.6

The bottom line is our method works.

Which is why other teams employ it, just at the tigers did yesterday - which is no surprise since they are the originators of the when in doubt get territory strategy that, with pressure, is the foundation of the game circa 2024.

It was our accuracy that failed us in the finals not our method.

I'd like to see how a Collingwood, Carlton or Brisbane would go for that matter, if a Curnow, Mihocek or Daniher we out of their finals campaign.

Add in one of their key midfielders getting knocked out 3 minutes into the 1st quarter in a Qualifying final.

We are not far away at all my fellow Demonlanders.

It's one scratch match hit out FFS.

We beat ourselves last year, even with talent absent and Clarry and Fritta not 100%.

Lady Luck shining down on us wouldn't go astray.

Genuinely shocked by the continued downward trending of Ed Langdon. Do we all remember that long haired gut running beast that was so crucial in 2021? He would run up and down that wing, all the way to pockets and provide defensive cover and crucial link up play...where is that guy? In my opinion it isn't talked about enough, he's a shell of himself. It's so bad that I'm to the point of I'm wondering if it's even time to move on from him in favour of a Woewodin type. FWIW this isn't based on yesterday's performance, as uninspiring as it was. This has been building for the best part of a season and a half.

Give him a chance to prove his doubters wrongs.

Watched the whole 7 periods on replay last night.

Reason for most of Richmond's goals were sloppy turnovers from us, or poor ball handling aka. May fumbling, turning over and them goaling.

Thought the ball movement when we were scoring goals was pretty good and our depth of forward 50 entries was good. JVR leading up and very nearly clunking quite a few was promising for early in the season.

To everyone saying we have to stop bombing into the forward 50, but they think we're a tall forward or two short down there, we can't have it both ways. The tall forwards want the ball coming in high or so they can get a run and jump at it.

Everyone saying we need to lower our eyes and hit up targets, means forget the tall forwards, just play smaller guys and look for them to lead to space/ball carrier. Which by the sounds of it no one wants that either.

Pressure on in the contest and the ball carrier on the wing for example, means they might have to put the ball on the boot quickly and therefore go long and high into the forward 50. We can't expect the ball to be coming in fast with space all the time, given our high-contest game, and opposition zone defences. Sounds like people want perfect leads and passes every time. Not realistic.

I actually think the bigger issue is the separation of our tall forwards. To me it seem like they're always flying for the same ball. Easy for defenders for mine. Get separation and try and create a one-on-one and back our guys in.

As the commentators were saying during the broadcast, we were top 5 for inside forward 50 efficiency (score per entry) during the home and away season last year, and top 5 for scoring in general. That obviously wasn't the case in the two finals we lost, but also, saying our method is completely useless is also not true. Tweak it yes. Say it doesn't work and completely change the way you play. Pretty stupid.

What i took out of the hitout is that we were trying to take it on risky kicks inside which we normally wouldn't do from previous years.

Which is better a more attacking approach as it opens up our scoring opportunities, better than the long up the line near the boundary.

But as you know if you don't hit those kicks you'll get done going the other way.

It was a typical scratchy not much pressure and we didn't apply our half ground press at all.

  4. This time last year we were smashing teams, flying out of the gate like a bull to a red rag.

Lets see if a change in approach yields different results later on in the year.

Youngsters show alot of promise great hit out, no injuries, Premiership aren't won in February.

I think they'll be conservative with Oliver and not rush him.

I can see him returning in the seniors from round 2 (Hawks game) to round 4 if all goes well.

However if they were to rush him back for Sydney, it would allow Trac to spend more time up forward and we need all we can get down there with Kozzie and co missing. I'd also want to see Sparrow increase his 'time on ground' from 65% - 75% to 80-90% to supplement Clarry's lower minutes in the initial few games. (I'm expecting a big year from Sparrow as he enters his 6th season)

If Clarry has clocked up the required amount of kms during his time off pre season and is ticked off by the coaching and medical staff and is ready to go.

I see no valid reason as to why they would hold him back.

    I'd probably go with:

    HF: ANB              Schache                Billings

    F:   Chandler       JVR                        Fritsch

With Spargo also going through and Trac & Sparrow also resting down there.

As bad as it must sound to alot of posters, this is Schache's chance to make an impact at the club.

I hope for his sake and the club's Shaq has gained some confidence during pre season and takes this chance that has been put in front of him.

He's not going to get a better run at it than this, 26-27 years old, its his chance to shine.

I’m bullish, statistically what are the chances of being struck down by injuries in 2019, 2022 & 2023 and again in 2024? We will need to be creative in the early rounds but after round zero we will have JVR, Fritta and The Koz plus ANB, Spargo, Chandler, Billing’s and maybe McAdam plus Tracc spending time forward and hopefully Schache playing fwd/ruck. Every club will have injuries but can they cover them?

Forgot to mention Tracc drifting forward also Clarry key to this happening.

  8. You can't expect the media to be all over us after what has happened in the last 2 finals series, plus all of the other shenanigans happening.

I believe we are in a better place/position this year than the last two years.

For me it comes down to our starting Forward Trifecta at the start of our 1st final in 24.

If its our 1st choice trifecta in JVR, Petty and Fritta happy days guaranteed GF appearance.

If not then were pushing 5 hit up the hill.

Let them think what they want.

Glad to be flying under the radar Dessie Hasler style.

  9. Uncomfortable with all this talk regarding BBB not seeing out the season against his wishes, even with his knee problems.

The off season was where decisions like this needed to be made not now, BBB wanted to play the year so we respect his wishes and send off our premiership hero in the right manner regardless if he plays or not.

Lets respect our heroes in the right way and it will come back to us ten fold.

Ben obviously holds aspirations of coaching and is a good role model to the youngsters on the list you need people like this around our club.

    It strengthens your culture.

I was going for an afternoon walk through Ghoshs Paddock and saw Clarry Oliver training on Melbourne's training ground. He was running laps and seemed in good spirits as he replied to me that he was going well. He was there with someone else and they had footballs with them. He looked in good spirits, but I am unsure how far he is behind everyone else in conditioning.

Without being privey to his work out volumes and numbers, he wouldn't be that far off IMO.

The only thing he might be behind in is the agility training side of things throught agility ladders and poles which isn't a great deal off.

At the end of the day it's when Clarry feels ready.

I'm just back from training and it's really interesting reading others views of today as they differ from mine a bit.

JvR said in a recent interview that today is ball movement day and Friday's are match practice so take that into account when you hear about players scoring goals.  It's non stop movement and there is plenty of space and lots of room in the forward line and there are goals scored all the time.  It's not "match practice" and the tackling is done with care.  For me it's more like intensive circle work but maybe I'm wrong.

Perspective at training is always interesting.  Bowser has been mentioned a lot particularly for his disposal but I thought he was a bit off today missing some kicks he would usually hit, but he was very involved and very focused.  He's agile and tough.  Yze was very involved and looks a good prospect.  Got lots of the ball and didn't look out of place out there.  But my standout for the day was Jack Billings.  He's a Moneyball pick and he'll be a beauty.  His kicking today was better than anyone out there as he hit up hard targets all day.  He's clearly fit and covering the ground well and will be regular best 22 from round 1.

JvR is looking very imposing taking contested marks and finding space well.  He's put on some bulk but it hasn't impacted his speed or spring and he is still super aggressive at the ball.  His kicking is also very reliable.

Windsor was more involved today than I've noticed on other days and certainly has a turn of pace although on one occasion when he was out by himself and running down the wing McAdam nearly caught him.  Unlike others I don't see him as a round 1 candidate but who knows.

All the older players were involved in ways you'd expect and I endorse the comments made about Viney and Trac.

I saw Petty in the match sims early but he either didn't get much of it or didn't do much of it because I didn't see him involved much.  I hope others can clarify his day.

It was a tough day today, hot, humid and they ran for a full two and a half hours.  There was also a good crowd, amazing what happens when you advertise training and give people a bit of notice.

    J Billings = Moneyball 101

Will be a great bit of business by the 🧠 trust at the MFC.

It's a wet morning, ball is like soap to a few.

Rehab had Jefferson and Hunter working with a trainer, ball work and fitness drills. Farris-White mainly running laps. Melksham and BBB in the sheds with the pedal and rower. Billings, AMW, McAdams, Petty did all the drill work with the team but didn't participate in the sims.

Brayshaw worked with the backline and was wearing the lime cap (no contact) during sims. That line also included, McVee, May, Lever, Tomlinson, Bowey, Adams, Hore. Interestingly, not Rivers, Salem, or Howe. They worked very well as a group, good ball handling and disposal for a wet day.

A run on indigenous player wearing number 49 was with us, as was N.Yze.

I thought Salem was training well, fit and skills remain silky.

After their warm-ups and drills, they had a competitive game of handball. They showed great intensity, tackled and hit each other with some gusto. Impressed with Frittas tackling, a couple of times he did two consecutive and other times wrapped up the ball carrier. The area was small, so shimmy and acceleration was needed to do well. Some have that ability to break into space where it is not obvious (McVee, Kossie), or the vision to see the outside player (Tracc, Bowey).

I also noticed Goody getting angry, (first time I had noticed this behavior at a session), after the end of the handball game. Another watcher mentioned that Williams did the same. Perhaps the coaches aren't going to be so chummy this season. The playing group appeared slightly stunned by the outburst and went quiet. ('this way covered, that way covered, should XXX take the first open option.').

The sims were unspectacular given the weather, plenty of safe kicking and jostling for that front position. A few soft injuries to Bowey and May in collisions. Turner is looking good, as is Howe and Verral. Tracc is leading by example, getting better and better.

    No Oliver.

They were kicking goals well in the wet during drills. Plenty of fumbles all through the session.

I think today's session was very much about being 'hard'.

Had to leave early, so I haven’t got a comprehensive report for sims.

We are looking good, healthy, fit and dare I say, ready, so early in the season.

    Go Dees.

    Top notch Kev💥

A lot of people seem.very confident about how good we are/ or might be... how this stands us in good stead for yet another tilt.

Such a good thing those 17 other teams are just going to stand by and do nothing to inhibit us.

If we dont develop a much better game, a much better forward system and efficiencies well we are pretty much dead in the water. A little mongrel might not go astray.

Imho we got pretty lucky in 2021... a very different year in so many ways and we not only persevered we dominated ( at times )

22 and 23 became a test to see if we could learn and build upon that success. Short answer is NO. So bad at 'learnings' we repeated our failure in 23.

Everyone else seems to have learned more about us than we have ourselves.  When it counts ...others triumph.

Premiership windows are about when you're in the box seat, when if things go your way your able by your own efforts to make paramount of opportunity.

We are not that kind of team currently. We seem to pitch wildly from effective to calamity.

I fear some are in for a rude awakening this season.... especially those wearing a red and blue jumper...  those in the box seem in another world.

    Go Dees.

I wont be disappointed this year.... not in the sense that we'll  finish beneath where i suspect.

This is all on Simon.  Show us.....show us a different Melbourne....the same one wont even finish where we have.

For that window to remain open....something different needs to occur in order to push the pane up again....otherwise it's only going to be pain in 24

Lucky those other 17 are doing nothing  😉

I rate Ooze.... btw.  Interesting to watch that lot

I fear we have a tough start...  will be lucky to finish 7/8 .

    Enjoy the footy.

    Bring it Simon....

Our Recruiting was not been great in 22 and 23.

    Recruited much stronger for 24.
