  1. It was a good win, but I don't know why, when we get 5 or 6 goals in front we play defensively and try to save the game  That was a great opportunity for a 10 goal win that we missed.

Be glad when Bowey comes back and can take Billings spot.

JVR is in his third season, he was always bulky. He played seniors at the start of his second season after a fairly dominant first season in the VFL where he kicked a large number of goals in a premiership. He definitely grew his fitness base before the second season doing running in the off season with Knuckle and Woey but I don’t think bulk/strength was ever his issue.
Jeffo is a different type, rangy, great hands, good goal sense,  usually better kicking, can get around the ground. The improvement in his pressure game and positioning after his time on the wing and in the backline is evident. I think he still needs to work on his fitness as his second efforts can be lacking but he’s growing into a good second forward and if his confidence and fitness grows he could become a very good option in a year or so.

I see Kolt in the Tom Sparrow and early career Trac mould. A powerful half forward who rotates through the midfield.

I always said Jefferson had a huge upside to come.   This is just another step on the way.

    Verall is showing plenty.

A bit in the mould of LJ.

I think this will be a watershed game from him.   If he is going to succeed as a second ruck to Max he has to gain possession and kick goals which is what he did.  Might not be this year but it was great to see.

Happy to admit I was wrong about TMac and BBB both were very solid today…most pleasing thing for me was how tough and hard we were, had Bulldogs players jumping out of the way…I thought last week the Swans out hunted us so great to see the “1 wood” back

Having a tall, mobile and hard hitting backline makes a huge difference and helps out the smaller players so much.

  5. Schache out for Fullarton.  Fullarton is not only a better ruckman but also a better overhead mark.  Even if he doesn't take the mark he would rarely be marked against.   He also kicked many goals last year in VFL

Hore for Bowey.   Our backline is our strength and you can't afford to take players from other positions to play there and expect to have the same cohesion.

Keep Salem in midfield.   Playing him in the back half in the last quarter against the swans allowed their midfield to take over.

Picket for Spargo  (could also be Chandler but Spargo was less of a contributor).

Billings for Woewodin  You need a sub who can come on and make an impact with run and aggression even if they don't actually get the possessions.   Woewodin had an impact last year whereas Billings was on for nearly a half and you hardly noticed him.

Laurie for AMW.   It's about time for him to see what he can do even if it's only as the sub.

That's 5 ins but if Picket, Bowey and Laurie are forced and you don't count the sub, it's really only the one unforced change (Schache for Fullarton)

I think they will keep Laurie in as they continually used him as a linking player in the sims, though would love to see Tholstrup in, but could be Woey.

Chandler was quiet but Goody seems to favour him. Billings in for him wouldn't be far fetched.

Spargo out, Salem back, kossie mid/forward.

Fullaton has to be a chance to replace Schache.

I thought Spargo was only second to Viney in the midfield.   Putting him on the HBF when Bowey went off cost us all the drive we were getting and the Swans midfield over ran us.   It was a bad coaching decision.  I would rather see a direct swap of Hore or Adams for Bowey.   Pity Turner is injured.

I’ve just bought a digital membership through the club, how long did it take for your Kayo subscription to come through? Was it via another email?

    thanks,

I had to ring the club membership line and they sent me an email with the log in details. You have to sign up for $35 a month after the 12 month period but you can cancel that after the 12 months.  Maybe they'll continue the package deal.

Yeah I'm not too sure. Think we need one 193cm defender but two?

We have May, Lever, Bowey, Rivers, McVee. Will Salo be a full time mid if Clarry comes back?

I think you need 8 altogether.   Those 6 plus 2 others   Salem and Rivers will go through the midfield and spend some time down back, but not enough to be the reliever of the bench.  So maybe Howes who did well and adds a little height we lost with Hibberd retiring.  Then the other key spot is between TMac and Thomlinson who seems to have the nod.

    Split into lines:

Centre Bounce: Max, Viney, Trac, Langdon, Sparrow, Salem, Windsor

Backs: May Lever, McVee, Bowey, Howes, Rivers, Tomlinson

Forwards: JVR, Schache, Kozzy, ANB, Chandler, Laurie, Fritsch, Billings, K Brown

So Tomlinson gets 3rd tall spot in defense.   Surprised about Howes going on Richmond practice.  Hope he goes ok.

As a dedicated Track watcher at Casey, this is my spin on today

    PRO'S

    Viney was HUGE!

Windsor consolidated his training form and WILL debut round 0

    Max was very good

    Bowser among the Best

Brown dog also might debut round zero

    Kossy Awesome

    Billings very good

Clarry and Salem were a class above in magoos game

    Verrall did not disappiont

    CON'S

Well why is it that inspite of faultless drills and match sims at Casey do we turn up and TURN OVER the ball time and Time and Time again. We have achieved nothing in this regard.

WHY DO WE KEEP BOMBING THE BALL INTO THE FORWARD 50 which has been a HUGE problem for the last 2 years. What the hell is going on Goody?

Petracca's high ball drop and exagerated arc STILL Continues to cost us gimme goals.

May turns it over and was fumbly today,Fritsch looked totally disinterested, Ditto Langdon who I would drop,Bailey Laurie does a few good things then some shockers. Tomlinson did little to inspire and we might be forced to look elsewhere. Rivers also is a turnover merchant! Did Chandler play??I think even with Clarry, Salem, Spargy Pants and Gus we looked MILES of today with some lazy and skill laden errors. Swans will slaughter us on that effort today!

With Turner injured, Thomlinson, Hore, Adams and Howes not showing much, and Tmac just avarage.   Would it be possible for Verrall to take the tall defender spot and then do a turn in the ruck.

Fox Footy have posted their Opening Round Teams for 2024.

    image.jpeg

    MELBOURNE

B: Adam Tomlinson, Steven May, Trent Rivers

HB: Judd McVee, Jake Lever, Christian Salem

C: Lachie Hunter, Clayton Oliver, Ed Langdon

HF: Alex Neal-Bullen, Bayley Fritsch, Charlie Spargo

F: Shane McAdam, Harrison Petty, Jacob van Rooyen

FOLL: Max Gawn, Christian Petracca, Jack Viney

I/C: Angus Brayshaw, Jake Bowey, Tom Sparrow, Jack Billings, Kade Chandler (sub)

It hasn’t been the cleanest pre-season for the Demons on the injury front, particularly up forward – where they can probably least afford it. Recruit Tom Fullarton (hamstring) and Ben Brown (knee) will miss the opening rounds, while Shane McAdam, Harrison Petty (foot) and Tom McDonald (calf) have also had disrupted summers and Jake Melksham is still recovering from his ACL tear. Lachie Hunter (calf) is also in doubt and Christian Salem was on light duties last week. Kysaiah Pickett, who’s had a ripping pre-season, is suspended for Round 1, while Joel Smith is also absent after his provisional suspension for a positive cocaine test after a game last season. Plus, no Fullarton and Brodie Grundy’s exit means the Dees have limited ruck cover behind Max Gawn to start the season. The biggest question isn’t a physical health issue, but a mental health one, with Clayton Oliver thankfully returning to training over the past fortnight after a tough 2023. While the superstar midfielder is tracking in the right direction, his situation remains a precarious one. Draftees in Caleb Windsor and Koltyn Tholstrup have impressed in their first pre-seasons to put their hands up for an early-season debut, while the returning Marty Hore and former Saint Jack Billings will also put their hand up. The likes of Tom Sparrow, Bailey Laurie and Trent Rivers could be in line for more midfield opportunities, with track watchers spotting Rivers’ move from defence.

I think it's about right.  Maybe Hore, Howes, Tmac and Turner could be in the same mix as Thomlinson.

I think Hunter would be the one likely to go for Kossie in round 1, but Billings would have to play well.

I guess we'll know more after the richmond, carlton ventures

  13. If you look at the second photo of Jefferson on 12th Gallery you can see where his strength will be.  He has really long arms and takes the ball well out in front.   He doesn't try to Klunk it, but more with soft hands like Fritsch.  Even from that photo you can see a defender having trouble trying to spoil.

Compare it with most photos of JVR where the ball is taken more above his head.  For him it works because of his leap and crash into opponents, but also makes it easier for a defender.

Plenty out early, Rucks all drilling together, a few of the smalls drilling fast steps and shimmies around mannequins. Many are goal kicking. Tomlinson and TMac drilling together.

    No Sparrow.

Rehab include, Petty doing mainly bike work, Melksham strolling around, Fullaton exercising with a trainer, BBB and Hunter very light duties. Jefferson training with an assistant.  Starting numbers of full training was about 31 players, no run-ons (Yze, Mentha).

We ended with about 27, 28 fully fit players. A bit of a worry given we are 5 weeks out. Viney was tackled between a player and the ground, shorts were ripped on one side, and he was limping. Kept playing, then left for some run throughs but couldn't complete them. Cork to the hip, I reckon. May ran some laps, as did Salem, who partnered Clarry in numerous laps. McAdam had some laps, though returned to the sim. Hore ran laps before the end of sims. Verral seems to have a running program going, fitness I reckon.

Warms ups were the same as usual, 3 stations, one funny walk, the other handballs and third was short kicks. They then do some run throughs, Tholstrup putting in more than the others.

They then go to more dynamic kicking drills, one precision, one lead to long kick to behind the player. A third was also used, (didn't observe well). They were boisterous, and playfully in the approach to each other.

Off to the handball games, which became interspersed with the sims.

They were still running many players through the on-ballers, Spargo, Billings, Bowey, Laurie, Viney, Gus, Tracc. The wings had some young players, K.Brown, Windsor, Woey, as well as Langdon there. At one stage they put Tholstrup down back up against Rivers who was forward. Jed Adams was looking good. Spargo ran the legs off the others, Kossie was playing a little selfish, Howes kicking was elite a few times. McAdams loves getting out the back for a goal. JVR holding some marks and getting on the lead. Fritta is back.

The quote of 27 fit players made me decide to put a list of who we haven't got from last year.   That is who is in or out of rehab, injured, missing, retired or transferred out from the players that played last year, or reasonably expected to play this year

Forwards - Fritsch, Brown, Jefferson, Petty (in defence list as well), Smith, Fullarton, Melksham, McAdam

Mids - Hunter, Sparrow, Grundy, Clarrie, Jordon, Billings, Brayshaw

Backs - May, Lever, Petty, Salem, Hibberd

That's nearly a whole side and I might have missed a couple who came back late after off season surgery .

  15. Great day out to watch.   Ground is in fantastic condition.   Lots of lines on oval at both ends at various angles to goals.   It's part of Williams set shot kicking where they stay on the line in approach over dummy on mark.  Rained half way through but didn't appear to affect ball handling.

Great to see so many spectators, especially so many young kids.

About 6 Casey players there to make up the numbers especially in match Sim which had proper umpires in control. The Casey boys were not as clean but still did some nice things and the rest of the group made sure they were involved.

A lot of the run through drills prior to the match sim were at a high intensity with reflex give offs.

I suggest anyone going to watch to take some binocculars so you can pick up players on opposite side of ground.

Before match sim they went inside the rooms and could see through the windows doing close in drills in the indoor kicking area for about 15 minutes, but it was all possession and handball, close contact stuff and no kicking.

Petracca is so far in front of anyone else, it's not funny.  Kozzie was great and his run down tackle had the whole crowd applauding.

Verell will be the back up ruckman - along way ahead of KFW, Fullarton and Schache

Feel sorry for Laurie as he really impressed, but basically has to take ANB's spot and he was good as well.  Hard to see taking Viney and both smalls into the midfield.

Howes, Hore and Turner all did good intercepts    TMac and Thomlinson also did but the other 3 are more nimble and could play on smaller opponents.  McVee was very good.

Brayshaw marked Tholstrup for a while and they are both similar body shapes.

McAdam for me is the pick of the recruits.  Just so quick with every thing he does.

I don't know who the fitness guy is, but he spent a lot of time with the guys doing boundary runs.   All the coaches being very involved.

May was the most vocal and giving directions to everyone. I think Lever did the whole match sim and looked ok.

Fritsch and JVR were the best forwards.  The main forward line looked good and you still have Jefferson, Brown, Melksham and Petty to come into consideration who didn't participate.  Didn't notice Schache at all.

Noah Yze has a big build already for a young kid.

Looks like Rivers will play midfield.  I hope Bowey gets a licence to go through the middle of the ground wherever he plays as he is so dangerous.  Quick and brilliant disposal.

Midfield looked good and still didn't have Oliver, Sparrow and Hunter involved.  Billings spent a lot of match sim doing boundary runs with fitness guy.

Tholstrup and Windsor showed enough although only a few touches.  Just hope they hold them both back for a while.

Spargo covered a lot of ground and hit up some good passes.

Woewodin did a couple of nice things but not much else.  Langdon covered a lot of ground and got a bit of it.

Chandler was lively and kicked a couple of goals but missed an easy right foot snap from end of goal square.

AMW ran laps after some short kicking at the start.

Sestan hardly noticed, but you can't see everything.  Seems to second guess himself instead of doing.

Interesting comments on KFW. He’s a young kid who hasn’t played much footy and it shows. But I’ve been told by people who know him just how dedicated he is to achieving an AFL career. His body is bigger than last year, he’s taken serious time off his 2km time and he’s much more involved at training.
The club will have to assess whether he has the skills to make it but if they think he has he could be a very good long term prospect. It may take him another 3 or 4 years to get there but he’s a big boy who shows good agility and would be a cheap long term investment as a category B rookie.

One thing for sure, he won’t die wondering if he could have made it.

No-one seems to have mentioned it but KFW has not only height advantage, he probably has the best leap of anyone to go with it.   Just needs to learn to accumulate possessions - he was only getting it 3/4 times a game last year.  If he has bulked up, he won't be pushed away and the possessions will come.

So the building near the winning post (white roof) is the main grandstand.  If you were at the races, the back straight is a fair way away but the 2 training grounds would be a lot closer than that

As for the 2 ovals, one might run alongside the home straight (n.b. the home straight isn't pointed directly West (so no Sun issues) The other oval more towards the back straight (?)

A lot of the existing buildings and stables from about the 2000m mark to the 1400m mark were formerly used for training horse but Caulfield is no longer a training facility.  The horses are brought in on race days and there are heaps of stables behind the main grandstand for use on racedays

So our building requirements could be put up anywhere from the 2000m mark to the 1400m mark ... incorporating a grandstand (?)

The oval at the top (Glen Huntly Park) will give you an idea of the space available elsewhere (specifically inside the actual racecourse) ... you could fit 3 or 4 ovals inside the actual racecourse

Again, the above is just a personal opinion not based on any data or info.  I certainly don't have any inside knowledge.  Others may see things way differently

Here's the image of the course

Further down is a video of a horse well worth following (gamble responsibly)

It's only a rough comparison but this is the Cranbourne racecourse which has a dog track, trotting track and race track on the right is the old Cranbourne football oval, changerooms and netball court.   All looks a similar size to CaulfieldScreenshot2024-01-1413_13_57.thumb.png.79b9a9867b051bb62f5a59512bad0681.png

Results however will tell the tale of Casey being the major training ground with about 20 advantages over Goschs In our drought breaking 2021 premiership.

The facilities at Casey recently only upgraded are second to none for professional footballers and not just a field made out of open space like Casey.

And the size of the ground and its surface plus dimensions of the MCG which no doubt assists our AFL boys adjust to training and moves on the same size.

About the only advantage of Goschs is location which some Club supporters allow to blinker judgement on Casey for any little event that is played or held let alone the historic playing home ground advantage to both the AFL and VFL teams.

An hours drive into the country was the privilege of our immortal 2021  heroes and could well be again in 2024 if we lift the flag again.

Yes it would be nicer if we could actually gain admission to the ground to watch our heroes on occasions. Mr Picket excluded also unfortunately.

Watching training at Casey is much better than Gosh's as far as seeing goes when they open the gates (maybe I should say if ever).   It's banked all the way around and a small grandstand, so you can see both sides of the ground.
