Do you know what role they are being asked to play? What deficiencies they are being asked to work on? I dare say that this is where you'd be most likely to find the answer.

If Hogan can play a bare minimum of games of VFL footy then he'll definitely be given AFL games at the end of the year, even if only one. The reason will be so that he knows what AFL feels like before he goes into preseason. It gives him a picture in his head about the level he has to get to to play AFL, so that he can push towards that in preseason. It's the same thing as what happened with Grimes.

The video interview said that the aim is to play VFL round 17 (round 19 AFL equivalent) at 70% game time. Then a few weeks of VFL before playing a game or two of AFL.

Players to target at the end of the year
Axis of Bob replied to JackVineyForPresident's topic in Melbourne Demons
We're currently last in clearances and lack classy finishers. It's not a great endorsement for our midfield. -
2014 National Under 18 Championships
Axis of Bob replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
The final round of the Champs is on today (Foxtel, if you're interested). Listening to Roos speak on Monday, he said we traded down from 2 because the midfielders available were all smaller types, which we already had. It makes me think that it isn't a given that we will trade down from an early pick like we did last year. If there is someone worthy of the pick that is either a big midfielder or a genuinely quick player, then we may well keep the pick and draft them. -
Potential future at Melbourne University
Axis of Bob replied to Axis of Bob's topic in Melbourne Demons
It addresses it quite clearly actually. Where he states 55% the true figure is closer to 20% as per the researched table. No it doesn't. You listed it by university. The claim made was people who live and study in the CBD. I'm not weighing in one way or the other. I just hate it when people don't read properly. -

You're data is nice, but it doesn't actually address the '55%' claim that olisik made. -

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BILLY STRETCH
Axis of Bob replied to e25's topic in Melbourne Demons
Stephen Hill was one of the skinniest players I can remember being drafted. As it turns out, an argument could be made that he should have been drafted at number 1. The point is, teams need a combination of outside class and inside grunt. We currently don't have that as we lack both class and grunt. Everyone complains about the turnovers, but then want to overlook classy ball users and draft nothing but grunt. It's strange. -
Michie is getting the same message each week: "Work on the defensive side including running in defensive transition". I dare say that, until such time as this is improved, he won't be playing AFL.
-
Fair enough. I'll have to watch the replay.
-
I don't think he was on Bontempelli. He was on Stringer for the last quarter.
-
Simply we lost the game because we lacked class. We turned the ball over when we shouldn't have, we didn't execute when we had chances and we couldn't win the ball cleanly in the middle for long periods of the game. We have the plan to win games (or stay close when we aren't playing well) but we lack the crispness to move the ball quickly and accurately to take advantage of our tall forward line.
-
Frawley was actually one of our best. He kept Jones touchless in 3/4 of football and then shut down Stringer once Jones was subbed out. Plus he gave us some run out of the backline. If you only ever look at mistakes then you're going to have a really unpleasant life.

I agree with what Nasher said a few weeks ago. You are the worst poster on this site. And there are a lot of contenders.

I was watching the women's game and was very impressed. The women's game is a very watchable one. Good skills and high quality footy.

Tldr. I'm just appreciating the irony of a thread titled 'The Problem' having a long, rambling OP with no particular emphasis.
-
His primary role is as a lockdown defender. The fact that he provides such good run is a really nice bonus. He's a very good young key defender, and this thread is awful.

Really?!? A young key defender was beaten (?) by a mature and talented key forward at times on the lead when they were isolated inside 50. And the lockdown key defender isn't a great kick. This is enough for you to be 'officially over' him? Your opinion is not worth the paper this thread isn't written on.

How many times has this actually happened? If it is easy enough to do that "Jones should be in the red and blue, no two ways about it", provide some evidence that this has happened before.

He's the same player. It's just our expectations of him that have changed. It happens with heaps of players. As a first year player we get enamoured with what they can do. Look at everyone's glowing comments about Salem. However, as they get older our expectations rise with how we expect them to develop. If Salem was a 3rd year player doing what he's doing now then do you think we'd be talking so glowingly? That's what's happened with Hurley. He was a strong kid with no pace in his first year who impressed with his competitiveness for a 19 year old. Now he's into his 6th year and his competitiveness doesn't impress us anymore because it's not unusual for a 6th year player. But now we notice his lack of pace and the limitations this has on him. In truth, he's just a player who developed early. He may still develop further, but he's no worse a player than he was. Statistically he's actually a much better player now compared with when he started. It's our expectations of what he should be doing that have changed.
-
Come on, Nash. He's been good this year, but let's not say things that we can't take back.
-
I'm really happy for Nev. I believe the cornerstone of his game is his combination of strength and agility. Against a clever forward he can do really good jobs because his agility allows him to stay in every contest. His work overhead has been a real improvement too, which has allowed him to not be mismatched against small forwards who are good overhead, as well as to kill long balls as a third man up where needed.
-
I was thinking the other way, as in that they would gain an early pick. They'll keep picking up their older players on the cheap, IMO.
-
It wouldn't surprise me if GWS traded a player for an early pick. They had a bunch of draft picks in one draft, so trading one for an early pick spreads their age profile across a few more years.
