That may be so but my concern is that physically Max will not last unless another ruckman can shoulder the load.

Nominations for the new Richmond Board
hemingway replied to pineapple dee's topic in Melbourne Demons
Remember the old cliche, footy is a great leveller. It has always been regarded as a virtue that people irrespective of their education or position can talk the same language, and I guess you may say, all sound like fools. -

Chris you never disappoint. A serious and considered response. You rose to my bait but did so splendidly and provided a very excellent summary of the role of a Board. -
Yes , although I am not fussy.

Like my novels, my writing is fictional Moon, from a foundation of personal experience. I no longer use traditional medicinal therapies as i have no time for the pharmaceutical companies. There are other therapies that are much more effective but I draw the line at thrashings or floggings.

Nominations for the new Richmond Board
hemingway replied to pineapple dee's topic in Melbourne Demons
Disagree, very bad Karma to make comments like this. Be careful what you wish for. Coming from decades of despair, I feel sorry for the true Tiger supporters. I don't know why people should get such pleasure out of the miseries of others. They are a true blue footy club with a rich history and culture and real supporters unlike many of the franchised or new clubs that have been created out of the ether. Go Tiges. -
Nominations for the new Richmond Board

Actually, I think some of our own past Board members would be suitable for RFC. We also have a past CEO that is available. Seriously, I have always wondered what Board's do and what they contribute. Do they make any real difference? I suspect not. Could Paul Roos and his coaching staff and Peter Jackson and his admin team have run the club this year without a Board. In times past, did the Board (other than when sacking coaches) make any real difference? They provide a sounding board and allow the CEO in particular to get approval for any initiatives. Yes, they oversee the running of the club and provide a back stop in the case of a corrupt or incompetent CEO but that's about it. It seems you can have a dysfunctional board or one of puppets or "yes" men or women. Naturally you need a wise and energetic President, good Coach and coaching staff, and great players but you do wonder what Boards bring to the mix. I think that some rank and file supporters on the Board would contribute as much as anyone. -
Strongly recommend pineapples indeed any fruit other than bananas. If you are tempted to have a banana after reading posts on this thread you know it's time to go cold turkey. Also time to go cold turkey if you start to develop an affectionate feeling toward any of the posters, one in particular. And, if after a period of time, you begin to feel this is normal, you definitely need to seek medical advice.

Time you went cold turkey and went back to pineapples rather than bananas.

Melbourne v Bulldogs All-Stars Women's match
hemingway replied to whers_jacka_now's topic in AFLW Melbourne Demons
Earl with the greatest respect I saw the game completely differently. What amazed me was how few dropped marks there were and how clean the ball use and skills were. There were players that read the play and knew instinctively what to do. Bear in mind that most of these women are exceptional athletes and excelled in other sports. The AFL will take credit for organising and promoting the game. However, really one might ask why it has taken so long. From the inception of the game in Yarra Park, women have made up a significant part of the spectator base, something that makes the game unique in the sporting world. Girls have been playing footy in the park forever. Go to any country game, and the netball girls are seen having a kick of the footy at half time and after the game. For me it's really a case of why has it taken so long for the women's game to be introduced? It's a breath of fresh air. The game has been held back by prejudice and a view that women should not or can't play footy. They clearly can and the men's game could learn some lessons from the way the women played tonight without the histrionics of the men's game. All power to the women in particular the pioneers of women's footy not the Fitzpatricks and McLaughlins who have jumped the bandwagon and want to take the kudos. In the future perhaps the men could play the warm up game in the grand final to the women. Now that would be something. -

Brilliant, I am a convert. Exceptional skills, players playing to position. This is not girls footy it is women's footy and it is fantastic to watch. Best thing that has happened to football for a long time. Transformational. -
Mitch Clark - did we dodge a bullet?
hemingway replied to thesleepinggiant's topic in Melbourne Demons
Clark was cruelled by injury and mental health issues. He did not use any club. Clubs bid on him like they do other footballers with apparent cache. They bid on him knowing his background, in particular, Geelong. He went to both MFC and Geeling hoping he would overcome his problems and play regular footy. The fact is that clubs took the risk and paid big bucks. Like venture capital it does not always provide a return on capital. Clark despite the moral judgements being made was just a chattel of the trading system established, encouraged and supported by the AFL and the clubs. Judgements about his character is another thing. -

Hindsight is easy for everyone, but you can't help think that Clark's demise at Geelong was fairly predicable, given his track record. Nice to see the cosy sanctimonious cats get it wrong. Second hand players are so often a liability and fail to produce anything more than their past records suggest. That's why I am always dubious about these guys particularly those that come with injury or behavioural problems. You can sometimes get lucky (Vince) but more often than not they do not bring much to a new club (Dawes/H). -
Just a class act. Of all the current coaches and folks involved in AFL footy, I can't think of anyone that comes close. We were fortunate that he spent 3 years of his life at the Demons. His gave us everything that we did not have. And I have no doubt sustained success is to come. Thanks Paul for everything.

Despite all the glamour and money available to the lucky ones, it is a ruthless business with plenty of casualties at the end of each season. Dreams crushed and hopes of AFL careers over. I feel sorry for those cast aside and hope they find good careers elsewhere. They may not have made it but they are not failures. They had a go and did their best. Given the injuries and the life time physical problems many footballers experience, the "not good enough" brigade may be the lucky ones.

So true Steve your damned if you do and damned if you don't

Agree, depth is so important partic in the midfield if you have a run of injuries. We look good with a full list but that can go pear shaped with a few serious injuries.
-
Why?
-
The question being- was MFC really chasing him that hard or showing interest ? Perhaps the latter. If he has made a decision to come back to Vic, he has a club offering him top dollars on a long term contract. Simply the best offer and perhaps the best offer by a long way. Not bad given his past injury problems.

With the cost of annual subs, increase in membership numbers, congestion outside and in the stands on "big days", you have to think long and hard about the benefit and value of membership. It has become like an expensive golf club. Unless you attend on a regular basis it is not worth the money. Unless you are delusional enough to think that there is some prestige in being a MCC member. The place has long lost any exclusiveness it might have had in the old days. I'm not knocking it, but unless you attend regularly it's not good value for the money.

Reassuring to see nothing has changed. Well that's one view.
