So Grimes on a half forward flank?

I don't think Grimes preseason warrants him automatic selection regardless of how good it's been. Let's see if he can back it up during the NAB games, then as we know home and away matches are different again.

Whoops! Point noted. Just throwing something up there, that is a little more round one focused.

Just food for thought, not, hours of labouring over figures and strategy. I'm sure I'll see many holes, or players I forgot. Harmes is point in case, he played a pivotal role in that game last year.

  2. Round one V GWS:

     Best 22 according to SEN

intra club match had Griffen, Pickett      And Patton all busting serious moves. I doubt we'll see McCartney, so maybe Picket fits in as a small forward. They are looking pretty strong!

Backs: Matt Buntine | Phil Davis | Nick Haynes
Half Backs: Ryan Griffen | Joel Patfull | Heath Shaw
Centres: Josh Kelly | Callan Ward | Lachie Whitfield
Half Forwards: Rhys Palmer | Jeremy Cameron | Steve Johnson
Forwards: Devon Smith | Jon Patton | Cam McCarthy
Rucks: Shane Mumford | Dylan Shiel | Toby Greene
Interchange: Jacob Hopper | Jack Steele | Stephen Coniglio | Tom Scully

    Melbourne:

    Backs: Jetta | Dunn| Garland
Half Backs: Salem| McDonald | Grimes
    Centres: Vince | Viney| Vandenberg
Half Forwards: Kent | Watts| Brayshaw
    Forwards: Garlett| Hogan| Frost
    Rucks: Gawn| Jones| Tyson
    Interchange: Petracca| Stretch | Kennedy | Lamumba

i really like the idea of Vince off half back and stretch wing. I'm also not sold on Watts at CHF, but, he has the height and the run.

Love the toughness of the centre line, especially backed up by Kent and Brayshaw.

Grimes has earned his place and might play a good shut down role on Shaw.

Anyway food for thought.  I think we march up pretty well.

  3. There was an amazing moment at training today where, during a full team kick-in simulation, Trengrove, cleverly intercepted  the ball and fired the ball back over the head of the defender for a goal.  The boys  all stopped, grinned at each other and gave a loud cheer. There was an electric excitement that shot across the group. Optimism felt high.

Yes true, VDB should definitely score some good points this year. Don't know about Wells though, too injury prone for me.

For now I've slotted in Dom Sheed, thinking he might get decent midfield minutes, but will be flipping the coin on him and VDB perhaps. I also have Buddy - going off the training reports, but haven't locked that in just yet.

Thought it would be tough for Sheed after they added Jetta and Redden to their mids. I will keep a keen eye on him in the preseason games.

Franklin will make a great P.o.d  I hope he holds it together.

I also have my eye on Reiwoldt, of the St.Nick variety, always gets off to a flyer.

Barring injuries prior to season I'm pretty happy with what I have. One spot left to fill though. A starting forward for <$400K. Thoughts?

Call me crazy, but, for a little more, VDB is looking very promising. Big impact, no base last year. Bigger base=bigger impact? Brownlow..maybe a it too much..

That aside, Wells is apparently looking pretty good at training, if you don't mind the risk.

Hi DeeVoted, I would love to join the Barassi league again this year! I will try to remember not to burn so many trades so early this year. On an aside, I hope that my SuperCoach results this year reflect the upward trajectory of the almighty Dee's!!

Forgot to mention, I would like to go be the moniker of RENE POGEL.

Gill said there will be no (further) action by the AFL.

But Hird will forever be condemned by the court of public opinion, and will surely never have any rôle in any AFL activity again.   Were he to appear at any footy event he would be roundly booed by the vast majority, many Essendon fans included - it would make Adam Goodes feel universally loved by comparison.

Maybe Syrian would be a better option?

I do believe the appeal is strong In that part of the world. Gill might think, now is the time to strike.

  8. I think Essendon got off lightly!
They moved Fitzroy to Brisbane for filling syringes with chocolate and Dulce de leche and injecting their gelato.

The Syberian Bombers has a nice ring to it.

A couple of pre-seasons of below altitude training in the Gulag should have them back on track.

I hope so! Pedersen is my preferred CHF. Has more grunt and kicks more goals and TAKES A MARK!!

He is looking fit! Nice run throughs today. Showed Gawn, Spensil and Viney a clean pair of heals. Viney is walking like he's gonna have a big year though.

Well so would i but none the less its great to hear Wattsy is training so well.

Agreed. I think he'll have a huge year if training is anything to go by. However, I suspect there will be plenty of hand on the forehead moments, coupled with head shaking and groans of disbelief.

I arrived towards the very end of today's session and only got to see the final drill before run throughs. It seemed to be a 'keep the ball moving at all cost drill'.

Saw a nice series of sharp, precise handballs, to clear the stoppage, out to Watts, who gave off a looping lollipop to his team mate, Who was then obliterated by Melksham? (Saw him stop Viney in his tracks!!)

Moments later, Jack made great space down the 'member wing', loomed up to half forward, tried to draw the man coming toward him, did, realised he'd gotten too close, tried to 'sell him some candy' only to find his candy had gone. Ouch. End of drill.

Lets hope the goshes stay at Gosch's.

    Sure

Wideman - Looks to be a smooth mover with good hands. I'm still trying decide if he'll be physically ready for senior footy. He's got a big frame & looks strong already through his core but lacks upper body strength. He doesn't look out of place.

Hulett - I'm going out on limb here, this guy can play. I can see him playing the lead up forward working up and down the ground. He impressed me today with speed, size & attack on the ball.  I also work with a guy who was involved with his junior club and says he's a freak who's been incredibly unlucky with injury.

King - Not sure yet, obviously big ruckman take time.

I'm also finding it difficult to place Weiderman. I watched he and Hullet, toward the end of lasts years training sessions, take marks and line up for goal, behind a 'faux-men on the mark.' Thought Weiderman looked good, but, might be a little out of his depth. Who knows after a strong pre-season

Hullet took me by surprise. He looked ready physically and was focused. His hands were solid and he was confident in front of goal. The inside word on his injuries and his ability has pricked my interest. Look forward to tracking his progress.

    Thanks for the reports.

Yep - just a big glass over an old grinder really....

But, many swear by them as more and more people go for energy concoctions.

Lazy mans blender. Just add the same amounts to your blender and hey presto the same result. If your feeling really paleo, you could grab a tea strainer (or, fine straw) and a tea spoon and press your fruit and seeds through that. At least your building core strength while you make the drink.

  13. If your in the city and are looking for something a little left of centre, try Wunderkarma on Lonsdale street. I've previously bought a dome that projects a holograph of whatever you put inside it, fossilised trilobites and other fancy stuff. Perhaps, you could buy some coprolite and pass it off as being from the Barassi period. An ancient memory of the time when demons strode tall on the plains of Jolimont.

Getting a little bit excited for next year...

His old coach at Ainslie went down to Melbourne and watched training and said that he saw Vanders dominate the way he dominated at Ainslie.

Now, that might not be the nicest thing to say about the other players but it makes me think he will avoid the second year blues if healthy.

In the guts and leave him there.

He out-swaggered CP5 in the drills on Monday (talk, stirring and nailing skills) I thought the prospect of the two of them rotating through the midfield is a yet to be identified syndrome for future AFL retirees.
