Critiquing the content not the person
TeamPlayedFine39 replied to Engorged Onion's topic in Melbourne Demons
All the people here commenting on the weakness in society: you're tough, well adjusted and are fortunate, lucky and blessed with the personal skills and resilience to overcome obstacles. Congratulations. Many people are not so lucky. One of the biggest regrets of my life is going through school with zero understanding of the issues that the people around me were going through. Issues such as depression, abuse, Autism Spectrum Disorder, etc. You were 'normal' or you were 'weird'. Weird kids were weird and there was no reason or excuse... they simply chose to act like that. The idea that people used to be tougher is garbage; marginalised people were simply without a voice or ignored. Do you honestly think that WW1 veterans were not suffering PTSD?? Was that something invented in a lefty-tree-hugging-feelgoodery in 1992? These issues simply weren't talked about because they were considered shameful and 'weak'. The solution to mental health issues in the past was usually found at the bottom of a bottle, and in many cases it still is today. Ridiculous that the notion of hurting someone's feeling is delegitimised and mocked still today. Anyone who's been in the room with someone when they are triggered can tell you if is a frightening and heartbreaking thing to witness, yet every day the idea of being 'triggered' is mocked. The OP is well meaning and reasonable. It is not an attack on anyone, in fact it's quite the opposite. Many of the responses however are lacking in empathy for those who are not as strong, resilient and, ultimately, lucky as you. -

MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 17
TeamPlayedFine39 replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
I'm not wrapped with the idea but if they're bringing him on off the back of VFL form, he needs to be played in a similar position to where he's been playing so well at that level. He has proven time and time again that he's not a small forward- please don't play him there! -
Hence the 'if'...

If Jetta had of missed that spoil, the cries for change in the team would be much louder.

Christian Petracca - Under The Radar
TeamPlayedFine39 replied to Vogon Poetry's topic in Melbourne Demons
Is he flying under their radar..? I thought he is quite frequently referred to as one of the up and coming superstars of the game. If anything, his press vs output makes slightly overrated by the press at this stage. I agree though- he's coming along very, very nicely and when it all comes together, look out world! -
I would be interested but feel his asking price may be a little bit high. He's a quality player, not a superstar, but certainly a more capable player that a few on our list who get regular games. Its time for us to start looking to free agents; cost us nothing but cap space so if the price is reasonable, he'd be getting games for us in 2018.

He quit. Always looked a likely sort on the training track but didn't have a great ball finding ability to influence the contest. Will be interesting to see if recruiters will give him another shot at senior level.

The Curnow v Weideman Debate Reprised
TeamPlayedFine39 replied to deelete my account's topic in Melbourne Demons
Even Hogan regularly has people picking holes in his game left right and centre. He is stillmany years off his peak still which gives you some idea of how good he could be. Weideman has excellent skills, he attacks the contest and the pack, he puts in when the ball hits the deck and he is a competitor. Too many people are basing their assumption over a match when he was corked in the first quarter or matches when he was forced to play as our number one focal point against seasoned teams and defenses due to injury and suspension. Curnow's got some talent (as you'd expect from a top ten pick) and I believe he'll develop into a good player. That doesn't immediately mean that we have made a blue in recruiting a taller, lighter and less experienced KPF. -
The Curnow v Weideman Debate Reprised
TeamPlayedFine39 replied to deelete my account's topic in Melbourne Demons
I still getting over not drafting Chris Grant 1988, I'll work my way up to being worried about Weideman when he's been playing for more than 18 months. Just out of curiosity, did you wait for Curnow to play a good match before writing this thread or is it something you've always believed? You draft players according to who you believe will be the better player over the course of their careers. The alternative is a team full of Rhys Palmer, Daniel Rich, Cale Morton, Mitch Robinson, Jordan Gysberts.- 65 replies

Daniher used to charge onto the ground and leap onto players backs! They loved him.

FWIW I was thinking his face looks identical to Jo Bailey's. Dad's hair, long sleeved jumper and number- mum's face.

If we cast our minds back to 2007-08, the media would constantly churn out articles saying the exact same thing about Hawthorn.

Terrifying to think that he was delisted and was still available at pick 50 in the Rookie Draft... makes me feel a little bit sick. One of my all time favourites now and amongst the first picked every week. Leadership group for 2018.

I don't really buy this line. It's a sport, a game - it's supposed to be about emotion and passion. If you don't love players on your list and ride the ups and downs with them... you're doing it wrong.

Yeah look, you're probably right... but similar things were being said about Pederson for the first five weeks- not to even mention Liam Jones.

Where's this observation coming from? It's not reflected in the VFL reports and it wasn't apparent in his couple of games last year.

So why name him in the squad? Why keep him on the list? (You're too quick for me Beelzebub)

Exactly. It's the same line wheeled out every time. We don't even have a general idea what they want him to work on. Is it attack, defence, disposal, decision making..?

As others have said, he's clearly not right in the head at the moment. Whether that's lifestyle, passion, commitment or even an undisclosed injury or condition making things difficult for him. He looks slow, his skin-folds look too high and the ball just doesn't seem to be bouncing his way when it lands. His marriage broke down last year, which can't make things any better for him, but the spark that was there in his game is gone. He looks to be laboring, both physically and emotionally. So, with that said, it's high risk, high reward. Western Bulldogs know that they have a champion on their list if they can get him right, but that also makes him an enticing prospect for opposition teams. Bulldogs would be wanting a top ten pick to even start the conversation, so he'd be an expensive pick-up. Of course we'd want him, we'd be crazy not to, but I can't see the Bullies parting with him unless there was something seriously wrong with him.
