  1. There’s definitely something there… Seems to be a confidence player and can get a little fun shy on the big stage.  This may hopefully give him the belief that clearly the football department have in him.

Yet to see it at senior level, but I trust the judgement of the people who signed off this, so go get ‘em Bill!!

  2. 58 minutes ago, layzie said:

What did we think of JVR's game? Much more time in ruck, it's not ideal for a youngster but he competes hard and it does give him a chance to get into the game. Thoughts?

Thought he played well, without dominating.

Good to see him getting a bit more involved in contests whilst rucking.  If he’s to continue to be used in the role, the next step in his development is to get more involved around the ground.  Pick up some link up positions and provide more of an option for hit-ups around the ground.

A few more possessions around the ground will make him a more damaging player and not just a quick chop-out.  Even if they’re cheapies, it’s reward for his effort and good for the confidence.

  3. I’ve been a big fan of Adelaide’s list build but they are looking a mile off at the moment.
Maybe this is the one step back before the big jump next year; but from this two game sample, they have some big application issues.

  4. Was buying some guest passes for the Hawthorn match this Saturday when I saw this donation link for their new facility.  There must be a massive amount of casual money being donated to their club through this method, yet I have never been asked for a single dollar from the MFC to fund, or find our new home base (wherever and whenever that may be).
When I see almost every club in the league forging ahead with their new training bases, some of which are now on their second training bases, I fear we are a long, long way off anything concrete.

Why are we not rattling some tins and generating some buzz and excitement?

  5. Went to a few games out there and graced the turf in a VicKick game or two.
Attended the Lighting Premiership there in '96.

Traffic, parking and relative isolation gave it an almost lonely feel.
My major issue was the seating arrangement and the huge space between the boundary line and the fence, made you feel too far away from the action.  This is something that Marvel does quite well, most likely in direct response.

  6. This thread needs some more love!

May again showed on the weekend how important he is to our structure and his long term replacement is very important for any sustained success.

Jed is coming along nicely and offers a bigger body than Turner in a post-May world.  Good luck! (No pressure)

  7. Crowd was fine for a Sunday afternoon against the Dogs.
1:00pm is a challenging timeslot too with kid's morning activities!

I was sitting ground level in the Southern Stand and it was very, very difficult.  I offered the kids at halftime that we could go home if they were struggling, but they were keen to see it through.  When the sun was behind clouds for much of the second half, a few thousand people emerged from the shade and started to fill the ground level.

Numbers were much better than what the TV made them look on an unbelievably hot day.

  8. Good for him - very happy he’s in a better place and playing good football.

Credit to the Giants and their program; people very rarely turn things around by themselves.

  9. I’m still confused by the language and the vastly different descriptions of exactly how Gus’s ‘retirement’ panned out.

Was it a forced retirement where the AFL said that he had to be medically retired, or was it completely Brayshaw’s decision?

I have heard both of these scenarios described in the media.  If it was the AFL’s call, then he should be paid entirely outside of the cap.

  10. Any loss for Brisbane, especially at the GABBA this year is a good thing; regardless of who it’s against.  That place is a fortress and their list is very, very strong.

Carlton wins can be pegged back as they share the G and their home ground advantage.  Any loss for Lions at home is worth its weight in gold for any team that aspires to be top 4.  (Which I’m hoping we still do!)

Long, long season ahead and no one would be writing off the lions, just like no one should be writing off us either.

  11. Even in 2021 he struggled to get his knee/body right.  We got lucky that he was cherry ripe in time for finals and then played a vital role in our flag run.

Started ‘22 in brilliant touch, then missed a slab of games and struggled on return.  In the final against Brisbane, he could barely move.

His talent is still there, but his body won’t let him do the things he wants to do.  Fingers crossed we can get a few games out of him, but I’d be bowled over if it’s more than 10-12.

  12. Very impressive and well deserved for our men’s and women’s teams.

It’s great that we have a facility like this in Casey but, once again, I’m disappointed by the club’s fundraising efforts.
Seems like we hit-up a small group of wealthy benefactors but very rarely ‘rattle the tins’ for facilities such as this one or any future high performance base (ie Caulfield).

Its great that we have generous members but I think we could do much better in broadening our fundraising base.

  13. I look at the height and weight of opposition players through the year to get an idea of their size.  Kane Corne’s example of a Jake Lever vs Charlie Curnow as a match up was a good one.

Surely will also make things more difficult for the football department when preparing the team and players for match ups, especially early in the season or against new players/debutants.

  14. Somewhat unrelated but was at the park with my kids the other day and there was a young hawthorn player training by himself.

It’s incredible what these players can put themselves through without their coaches and teammates to push/guide them.

  15. Very happy with this announcement but, to me, this is more about the upcoming election rather than real, substantive development.

Leaving the MCG precinct is the right decision and Caulfield is an excellent opportunity.

I believe it will happen but I’ve watched too much Utopia to get too excited just yet.
