WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - SAM WEIDEMAN
CityDee replied to xman97's topic in Melbourne Demons
he tested last week at full pace with some others that were injured and couldn't compete at the combine. Obviously he went ok . Id suspect we would start at scratch with him assess the injury and have him on a modified program building core strength like they did with hogan.who knows how long it will take but they will be cautious. -

Playing against men undersized and as Shifter said he will learn to use his body better id say when he has a couple of afl pre-seasons under his belt.SAM Weideman flew for marks, crashed packs, kicked goals and set them up for others. This year's draft pool is not full of 196cm key forwards who can grab the ball, kick it straight and have the smarts to go with it, but Weideman announced himself as one of them on Saturday morning. The 17-year-old, who is the grandson of Collingwood legend Murray Weideman and son of former Magpie Mark, set the tone for the NAB AFL Academy in its gallant nine-point loss to the Northern Blues' VFL team at the MCG. In the first quarter alone, the Eastern Ranges prospect took five marks and kicked two goals. He finished with 11 touches and seven marks as the Academy rebounded from an 82-thumping at the hands of Werribee last week to provide a strong contest. Not sure where Sanderson got 12 contested from as he said last night on air. With more than half of their team Carlton-listed players, the Blues were expected to win. And it was perhaps the maturity and poise of returning Carlton star Andrew Walker (29 disposals) and Dennis Armfield's four goals which proved the difference as the Blues held off the Academy to win 14.15 (99) to 14.6 (90). While Weideman's performance in attack will have him in recruiters' thoughts as a top-10 pick, at the other end of the ground Jacob Weitering's claims for being the best under-18 player in the country continued. NAB AFL ACADEMY 3.2 7.3 9.5 14.6 (90) NORTHERN BLUES 3.2 7.8 9.11 14.15 (99) GOALS: NAB AFL Academy: Schache 3, Ah Chee 2, Hipwood 2, Weideman 2, Keays, Tucker, Cole, Snadden, Curnow Northern Blues: Armfield 4, Buckley 2, Johnson 2, Whiley, Totevski, Viojo-Rainbow, Walsh, Fields, Foster BEST : NAB AFL Academy: Ah Chee, Weitering, Parish, Weideman, Hopper, Keays, Tucker, Nyuon Northern Blues: Armfield, Walker, Graham, Whiley, Boekhorst, Buckley, Wilson -
Hogan had stress fractures also , weideman talked bout his grandfather who lives in adelaide , the kid is a tiges supporter and talked glowingly of learning from the likes of Jesse Hogan. I reckon we will annoy the hell out of eddie and his gang for many years to come.

I'm stoked but would have been great to have a pick around 20 to get the other mckay brother or hibberd . the only pick I felt genuine envy for was carlton getting harry mckay the pick after ours when we took weideman , cant have them all I guess but I reckon Mackay will be ripper also.

In the combine footage shown on fox today he looked lean fit and strong . Shot 30 from 30 in the goal kicking and was in the top bracket for the agility test .he is explosive not unlike cripps at the blues . Great get . -

He is a teenager growing into a tall frame forget about the stress fracture , Hogan had them in the back , stoked to hear he took 12 contested marks in a half v carltons reserves this year . Could be the best player in the draft . -

Curnow at 7 could be a good option the atheletic and powerfull Hogan Petracca and Curnow show up forward with petracca and curnow able to rotate through the midfield is exciting.
-
Absolutely , Will be big year for Jack with the team improvement and a focus on competitive efforts each game. I reckon he is getting there. Snapshots last season of his best and worst. after the first 10 rounds last year people were saying in the media he had overtaken Nic nat and then the form slump.

The combine can be both useless and useful imo. Someone who tests well in the athletic tests may not be a footballers left toe . But a footballer like a Brayshaw would need to show a good level of fitness in beep tests the 3k to be the real deal. You would imagine natural footballers like Brayshaw would test well in the kicking handballing test. The dees knew what they were getting with Angus as he had done pre-season at the dees pre draft .

He had been out for 18 months. So in game field kicking can be a little off if you have only been on the park a hand full of times .He was also kicking to a contest / down the line in the highlights package and yes did miss but also proved that he can hit up. I like his kicking style and evidently winning the kicking test at the combine shows that although he hasn't had consistent game time he can do it at an elite level. We probably wont take a chance at 7 but I reckon he is worth a look and believe he will go before pick 20 .

It affirms what we see in the footage with Hibberds kicking style and skill on display . And when your talking mids tank and endurance speed are important particularly now with interchange cap . I really value strength and size around the footy and in the tackle . Throw in a decent mark at 191cm and we are geting into Nat fyfe terrioritory re attributes . Watts at 6-5 does have good speed if you want to see an example of what we all want to see everyweek from Big Jack watch the geelong game again .

Agree this kids a lock as a quality player at the right size and imo a midfielder . If we add Parish and Hibberd we are away with a group of you g mids ( vince and jones aint young ) that can take us forward , hibberd reminds me of brayshaw . Pederson and dawes can help out hoges tor a bit .

Im no xpert but Mitch hibberd should be a priority , fantastic tall mid who can play right away and at 191 cm can go forward . Id take him at 7 .
-
Annoying playing the saints home at etihad but on 2 nd thoughts we nearly had them there last season and were no where near it against them at home . So meh lets start winning .
-
Scache will be number 1. Blues would be crazy to pass up a quality big forward .
-
Out cross grimes in brayshaw petracca
-
Pick 3 would see us take either Weitering or Schache if availiable ( tmac could go forward ) . If not id consider taking the tallest mid available at 3 from the top bracket of players. Is curnow a genuine chance to play as a tall mid? Matthew Kennedy is another we could take at 3. Pick 7 would be for a key forward if we didn't take one at 3 . Seems to be slim pickings and not a lot of footage but Weideman seems to be the man. I'd also seriously consider taking Mitchell Hibberd at 7 and then taking a chance at pick 46 on someone like Harry Mackay at 200cm as a forward second ruck. Its a shame we don't have a pick at around 20 - this Hibberd kid is a natural, strong in the tackle like Brayshaw and at 191 cm's is the right size midfielder that we need to compete against the best, if he slides to 46 I'd be stoked.

sad to see you go Howe, watched the cats game again , Howe was kept quiet until he had an influence in the 3rd and 4th quarters , gave the cats defense nightmares flying for the footy marking or causing a spill. Interestingly watts and dawes were good in that game . With more ball coming into the forward line howe will do well for the pies. The kangas game in defense is also fresh in my mind as a good game for Howe. I'm in the minority but would like to see him, stay.

If we are thinking bout next season , and assuming we get these players included Rosa Vince Jones Viney Salem Tyson Bugg Melkshem brayshaw petracca trenners and perhaps Kennedy forms a group of competitive mids flankers with some quality . Better than what we have carried recently . Rosa would fit in well helping some of the older guys carry the load . He could play for three years who knows . Yes fom me .
