ive gone with sylvia, because i think if he gets his body right he will be one of those impact players that win votes. gives him a good shot at the brownlow if he puts in a full season. he is also a chance to be a strong resting forward late in his career, and could turn garry ablett style if we want to use him that way... although i think bate and mclean are more likely to win the bluey...

there is no one to come in and play the positions of either brock or davey deeangel, although holland was named best on ground for sandy playing back/forward, the same position as miller. that is why the change was suggested. also because miller is giving away height and weight to brown. although i personally think that mille ris a better match up for brown than holland, but i think brown would give ether player a hiding.

in 2006, newton played 10 games for the sandringham senior side and kicked only 5 goals.. 3 goals in one game, and a single goal in two others. last year he also played 11 games for the sandy reserves side. he managed to boot 53 goals in those 11 games. he obviously struggled to perform at a higher level. this year: newtons season for sandringham this season (the B stands for best, not behind) Date/Time Played For Opposition No Gls B Sat 7/Apr 1:10 PM Sandringham Geelong 29 1 - Sun 15/Apr 2:00 PM Sandringham Werribee 29 1 - Sun 22/Apr 2:00 PM Sandringham Bendigo Bombers 29 1 - Sun 29/Apr 2:00 PM Sandringham Casey Scorpions 29 6 3 Sun 6/May 2:00 PM Sandringham Frankston 29 5 4 Sat 19/May 2:00 PM Sandringham Williamstown 29 2 - Sat 2/Jun 2:00 PM Sandringham North Ballarat 29 5 - Mon 11/Jun 2:00 PM Sandringham Coburg Tigers 29 2 - Sun 17/Jun 2:00 PM Sandringham Box Hill Hawks 29 3 - Sun 24/Jun 2:00 PM Sandringham Port Melbourne 29 3 5 rounds 1 -3 he kicked 1 goal a game. he then bagged 6 and 5 in successive weeks, the first time he had ever kicked more than 3 in a game for sandy seniors. after the 5 there was a byebefore he kicked 2 against williamstown. there was then another bye (SoO i think) and then he kicked 5 the week after. he has then missed a lot of shots at goal since then. jarka. im not sure which part of the season you wanted him played. was it round one when he had never played a good game for sandringham and had gone missing preseason in the intra club game? was it round 5 when he had kicked 3 goals in 3 games for sandringham, and was being used all around the ground wing etc and was struggling for consistency? was it the middle of may when he had played two good games for a vfl side for his career? or perhaps it was late may or early june when he was coming off a weeks bye for sandringham having not played? maybe you could say he couldve come in for queens birthday, but we had our forward line together and were coming off our first win of the season, not exactly a time to make unforced changes... i know you wanted him played earlier, but i think whe you look at it rationally you realise he was played when his form warranted it, and when we could get him in. we didnt rush him in before he was ready, and we didnt drop neitz or robbo for him. we picked him when he was ready and when we could fit him in the team. EDIT: timD i just read your post and want to add that the back injury did in fact hamper his firt year at the club. in that year he played 15 games with the sandringham reserves, kicked 21 goals including two bags of 6 goals, and one of 3 goals. he kicked a solitary goal in 6 games and didnt trouble the scorers in 6 games. while he may have shown potential in a few games in his first two years at the club, it hasnt been until the past 6 weeks that he has really shown he can play at a level above vfl reserves consistently. perhaps jarka forgets this.

we should be second on that ladder...

bartram could have been a first round pick, but even ND said he was surprised he got a run that early but just worked so hard over summer. regarding the newton situation, he has come in and played some good footy. there are now two arguments. ND held him back for just the right amount, or ND should have played him earlier. you know what? i don't care, neither point can be proved and ND is now gone, so its not worth arguming. but it should be noted that he started the year not kicking many goals and got progressively better. his form has continued to improve all year until he finally got picked for the dees. all we can say is that whatever we have done with newton has worked thus far.

regarding sylvia and CJ, sylvia has just shown more promise at afl level. even if he hasnt dominated, hasnt had consistent big games, he has kicked goals, taken strong marks, and laid good tackles. he has shown glimpses, where i dont think CJ has done that. however an interesting stats comparison: 2007 average disposals colin sylvia 12.6 (in 9 games) CJ 11.3 (3) marks colin 4.4 CJ 3.0 tackles colin 2.2 CJ 2.0 these stats dont tell you what they are worth but as an average (of which colins is dragged down by a couple of poor games), they are about even... CJ has also had 20 disposals in a match twice in his career which i didnt realise...

thats the line that interests me. only his 3rd year of football??? if he is showing promise at the moment thats fantastic, but im sure he is a longer term prospect if this is the case...

i think you'll find his been on this forum more than a year longer than you jezza. before this board demonland existed on an aimoo forum for years. many of the people who signed up around october 2005, november 2005 were actually posters from years before hand. i believe i first got on the board about 2003, and im sure ash was already here then...

a very good point, and one that i believe has been underestimated. leading 22 men onto the field requires more than one player...and you also need a number of players who can do it while performing. brad miller has it no doubt, but he hasnt been able to back it up with performances. if nathan brown was as good as cameron bruce he would be a natural on field leader, but as he isnt he gets the vote for great bloke who tries hard. our "leaders" go missing when we are struggling. but how do we fix this? do we need to draft leaders? (didnt work with miller). i think its a development thing as much as its a characteristic. yes some players have it and some don't. but some players need to have it brought out it them, and i think we've struggled in this area of late.

one of the good things about this is that if dunn doesnt play for the mfc, he will get a chance to play as a KP in the forward line with no newton, or miller there, an opportunity he hasnt had for a while. overall a pretty strong backline however. sandy still look too strong for me in this game.

i'll throw my weight in behind you ash, if you're asked to leave this site im gone too. and i will point out, alan smithee, that ash has been posting on here for years, much longer than his joining date suggests because there was an old board, and the majority of demonlanders appreciate his outsider views. he is an astute observer of the game, even if he does barrack for the wrong team. and you, alan smithee, have been here one month.

i dont know if there is nesecarily more that hasnt come out. but i don't believe for a second that didak first met hudson that night. if the WCE have problems with this sort of behaviour and players hanging around these sorts of people, it wouldnt be surprising if there is an element of that in melbourne.

it is sort of like adelaide didnt know which jumper to wear, so thought itd try them all! lol

not sure about that...i think it still exists. i think the shinboner spirit is a term that defines them as a close group. they play for each other and for the club. not for the money. i think it describes their unfortunate situation with arden street and finances, describes a backs against the wall mentality. obviously if they get belted and play like a rabble its not there, but consider how you rate north melbournes list, and how everyone rates them preseason, they seem to always win a few more than you expect them, pull each other to a better level, and thats what im talking about. i believe that if the club was in a better situation, that spirit is the prerequisite for what sydney have with their group, which i reckon is fantastic.
-
why not give it to newton? he is the messiah after all :D :D :D
-
melbourne football club games were once beamed by satellite directly onto french tv. the french quickly surrendered to brock mclean, just to be safe.
-
i reckon, that if north had money their leadership group might get a similar gig. but atm north just do whatever they can for publicity and money they are still famed for their shinboner spirit...as a group they are much tighter than the mfc will ever be...

if he is keen to play next year, and we think we are a crack to give neitz one last chance i think he should be retained, on a heavily performance based contract. and im talking we should pay him a chris johnson wage, plus large amounts per game, and we should offer a larger incentive for finals. if possible i would even consider weighting some of his performance based to how he actually performs (minutes of game time, possessions, KO's whatever the KPI's are). but if we are serious about having a crack next year, he will be around.
-
ash, imo, it was worth one, if only because it was off the play, the incident had settled and the player was running the other way. i would prefer the afl to concentrate on rubbing out this sort of behaviour, off the ball etc, and leave the big bumps in the game. i dont think rocca should have been suspended. it was in play and should have just been a free kick for too high. lloyd snipped someone off the ball. not courages, stupid, and the week will let him think about it.
-
well i look forward to seeing more of newton, dunn and frawley the next 9 weeks, three young talls who could become good players. and i hope that buckley and CJ get a bit of a run over the coming weeks. im not sure if garland is ready to step up but he might get another game or two...

out of interest i think the process would have gone something like this: ND: do we want aker guys? Leadership group: No way, we definitely don't want him (unanimous) ND: OK we won't. OR ND: Do we want aker guys? LG: Yeah we'd be happy to get him, he is a good player and will add to the team. ND: OK, well we'll think about it and i'll make a decision tomorrow, thanks for the input. I don't think the LG group would have made the decision to get him, but if they were strongly against it it probably would have been a big no because of the disruption it would cause...

i love this 'heritage round' if only for the fact that it points out why we suddenly have jumper clashes. PA's proper jumper doesnt clash with collingwood. Perhaps north and collingwood clash a little, but other than that no one should have any problems at all. if the bulldogs, nth, stkilda, all kept their jumpers original, and freo and west coast returned to their original jumpers (and if you think the jumpers have stayed the same: http://www.footyjumpers.com/), if freos jumper doesnt look more blue than purple every year i'll go he). there wasnt a problem with clashes until teams started making changes.
