Thought he spoke well with a very direct no BS approach and a hint of arrogance. The key thing which has slipped through and I amazed the media did not ask more about was that we have assured he will be surrounded with a strong group of successful people. That to me means large changes in our assistances coaches and other areas. Would be great to see Buttifant follow him to Melbourne.

I am not one to judge a coach as I dont know enough. However why do l feel like we are replacing Dean Bailey with Dean Bailey? Senior Assistant at premiership winning club. Played VFL but was a battler. Appears to be an educator and a builder of young mens confidence.
-
Scoop I completely agree with your approach.

I klooked at it from the perspective of how I think they will be after another preseason and what the effect would be if they were out for the year. McKenzie is purely a tagger at this time in my eyes. No McKenzie I dont think will have a drastic affect on our success as Bartram and Bail and can play this role if required. I expect Blease will have a breakout year next year and offers speed and skill that I cannot see anywhere else in our list.

No Frawley? In order of importance based on impact to team success if they missed next year. 1. Frawley 2. Garland 3. Jamar 4. Sylvia 5. Jurrah 6. Grimes 7. Watts 8. Moloney 9. Trengove 10. Blease

I cannot see how anyone can be anything but proud at the way Melbourne have handled themselves to this point. We have not potted the kid all year and offered him the benefit of the doubt. We have stayed true to our overall list and offered the best reasonable offer possible and not got into a pissing contest with GWS. If I had heard that we had agreed to pay Tom $6 million or even offered him a 6 year deal I would seriously be concerned about the people calling the shots at our club. Schwab and McLardy handled themselves strongly yet graciously today and the proof will now be what they can negotiate behind closed doors for his departure. Scully will be good, I doubt he would be great and would not be suprised if we end up coming out on top with this deal in the long run. -

Being that the cliche you have mentioned is about Tom Scully can I please ask moderators to move this to the appropriate thread. -
Warnocks worth will be determined by the amount of clubs in their premiership window that believe they are a key defender short of a tilt. Geelongs talls carving up Hawthorn on Friday does not harm his value. Here's hoping Hurley and co do similar to Carlton today. I think people will be suprised by his value if we get two clubs in need.

I tend to agree with you Jaded. I would expect that there are certain elements that he would change due to the quality of our back six and the lack of contested ball strength of our current mids. However the general defence first focus that is his mantra would remain. and if that is the case I am all for it.
-
Is he the perfect fit for us because he is mediocre like half our list? You also forgot to the two most important "can't take marks" and "doesn't kick goals". Next please.
-
Disagree it was absolute boring rubbish and it cost him the game. However I am open to him bringing some of this defensive focus to the Dee's as a different list at a different home ground doesn't necessarily mean a carbon copy game plan.

What is the correlation between an inexperienced coach and losing Scully? What is the obsession with an experienced coach. I want the best coach - maybe that is Lyon or Malthouse but maybe that is Scott Burns. I could think of nothing worse than us ignoring an up and comer and choosing Eade because he has experience or Viney just because its easy.

"Bleeds red and blue" is certainly the one I loathe the most. -

If Scully is gone and we obtain the same deal as a proven superstar of the game who was at his peak I cant see how we can feel robbed. Particularly when the value of those picks is perceived as heightened if we can use them in the mini-draft. You can argue the amount of years of service we miss out on a potential superstar but we are talking speculative and their is nothing I have seen that shows more than that. He had a good year last year but no sure signs of being a superstar. He has had a poor year this year which has been hampered by what could be an ongoing battle with knee issues. If he's gone. Extract the best compensation possible via the criteria that was agreed to with the AFL and then focus our energies on using it to our best advantage. -

Should this not be in the other thread. No new news here? -
GWS will already have a list full of kids so offering them the compo pick will not excite. Nor will giving them a selection of list cloggers. My understanding is that GWS do not need to use any of these this year or even the following year if they choose to. I seriously doubt we will be willing to trade what will be required to get them to open these up but doesn't mean we shouldn't try.

Jerry please dont bring logic to this forum.

All Bate did today is increase his trade value and allow some of us to not feel as bad if we cannot move him on.
-
6. Frawley 5. Moloney 4. Bate 3. McKenzie 2. Rivers 1. Tregove (would have been BOG but for some iffy disposal)

I saw this year best case 6th with finishing 10th probably my expectation. I expected us to beat up on sides at a similar stage to us yet lose to the more mature teams but with a more consistently competitive showing. From a win loss perspective this season has not been a disaster but has not lived up to the over the top expectations of some supporters. Our performances against the stronger bodied sides is where the biggest disappointment lies and such results can be attributed to an indifferent game plan (being rectified), a young and immature midfield (more games and preseason will assist this) and poor leadership (hopefully will get a massive shake up between seasons). We have played 8 debutants and all have exciting qualities though I am not sold on Evans or Nicholson. That leaves only 4 players on our list including rookies who have not experienced senior football. We have seen another 5 players clock up 50 AFL games (Bennell, Garland, Martin, Morton, Petterd) and injury permitting should see Watts, Trengove, McKenzie, Jurrah and Grimes follow suit next year. We have seen injuries to Jamar open up invaluable experience for Martin and Gawn. The same can be said for Grimes opening up opportunities for Strauss, Tapscott, Nicholson and Blease off half back. This years focus was always about development and not about an assault on the finals. I still believe we have a great list and we need to stay the course, be patient and make some smart list management decisions. We do not need to panic into trying to rush our move up the ladder with short sighted trades. The season will finish today and many will say it was a wasted year but dont discount some of the positives that will be looked back on as very important as we start to rise over the coming seasons.
