  1. Not a lot of optimism which isn't surprising after last week's game. Overall their focus was on underdone players, lack of speed, poor attitude and little aggression. Lamented the absence of their tough guys: Robinson (retired), Zorko (injured), Matheson (not selected). From Big Footy Dees bring this pressure it’ll be round rd 23 2022 in rd 2 2023. Team balance is wrong at the moment t. We had a speed problem, now we’ve overcompensated and have a grit problem. Friday night against another fast moving side will be enlightening, the Demons will be fired up after us beating them last meeting. We lack fierceness and need to do something to shock these gentlemen players into desperation effort levels. i just want the players to care and reverse that putrid attitude and effort from yesterday. Maybe I'm getting too pessimistic but if we plan on losing the ruck contest, which is going to happen anyway , how do we expect our guys to shark it with Oliver, Petracca , Brayshaw, Viney ,Harmes etc getting service. Demons mids hit the ball hard. Based on what Horne-Francis did to us, Petracca will be unstoppable. IF Zorko was playing yesterday he would not have changed the result, but I reckon he would have become more aggressive in that 3rd Q and the team might have responded. Another concern I have had the last few months is the lack of defensive players in the forward line. Whether we win or not against Melbourne is not as consequential as to whether we turn up with intent and keep it going for the 4 quarters whatever the state of the game. If we just fold and poonce around again I'll be genuinely worried. There is something fundamentally wrong with our team all down hill skiers. Of our last 5 games we have been belted 3 times that’s not a team that should be contesting for a flag. I watched the Dogs v Dee's last night, and even though the Dogs lost by 50, still looked light-years better than we did this weekend. The big worry for me is how hobbled Gawn and Petracca were and won't be this time... Payne and Andrews don’t get close enough to their opponents to tackle them. These are two defenders who seem to have a major deficiency in defensive skills. Yep the old “are we pretenders?” conundrum starts again for another year. Melbourne look deadly dangerous already and last couple of years have had the measure of our midfield. Bailey is not an inside mid and neither is Berry. If Berry played for the Dees or the cats he wouldn’t get a game. Fritchs is about to rip Rayner a new one… …Fritsch will run Rayner into the ground in the first quarter, if Rayner tries to run with him. Even in our best games there are quarters we sleep in, let alone whole games we just don't wake up. My favourite – for its reality and light hearted humour Right, you go whack Petracca in the tibia with mallet, and I'll ride a mini scooter in Max Gawns' back. That oughta help Melbourne replicate their team from that semi final win. Coleman was excellent against us in the final so his unavailabilty this week will help. Dees by 4 goals!

  2. My eight-year-old has never seen his footy team win. I don’t want to lie to him cry me a river of wees and poos they’ve only been [censored] for about 2 mins about as fair weather as it gets

  3. Really feel for the Poos and Wees. I personally would love to see the Poos and Wees get flogged for another decade. No sympathy at all from me.

  4. It's a good reminder to have faith in the current Admin/FD. People were up in arms when we traded out Watts, people weren't happy when we lost Hogan but ended up with May. People (including myself) weren't happy when we picked up Grundy and Hunter but they're looking like inspired decisions. The current FD has earnt our faith and repayed it several times over. Relax, we got this

  5. In my ‘Demonland as a pub’ narrative - this is like someone at 9pm on a random Tuesday just yelling this out across the bar at the front. It’s a good point, mate. Totally. But where did that come from?

  6. We should have a MFC tent at all the hawks games, handing out free Trac and Oliver merch to all these poor, suffering Hawthorn kids. There's plenty of room on our bangwagon.

  8. I can trace the origins of this thread to the mention of Cam Rayner in the 'What they're saying at Springfield' thread. Humans are fascinating creatures. Anyway, if Watts had been taken at 31 we'd love him and if Fritsch was taken at 1 we'd probably have burned him for 'underperforming' for the first three seasons of just being good. Of course, NOW we can say that pick 1 of the 2008 draft got us one handy third tall swingman for a decade and then the games' best mid-sized forward who kicked 6 goals in a grand final and is realistically top-3 in his draft. It's like an MFCSS therapy session in here.

  9. Would love to have seen Watts arrive as youngster and play under our current admin with players like Viney and Gawn to look up to

  11. "Why can't Hawthorn win all the flags, forever and ever, and then turn back time and win them all over again, and then invent a new sport and win all the flags in that too? Why is life so unfair? Won't somebody think of the children? Oh, and at three quarter time the jam doughnuts aren't properly warmed up yet, so it's just injury upon injury."

  14. Some of the confidence here is likely a reflection of the last game we played - an easy win over opposition that most think will be a finalist Just like their fans are possibly too pessimistic after a disappointing effort/result last week. The reality I'm sure lies somewhere in between - this competition is very even and like Goodwin says over and over (and I agree) you must respect your opposition. Fall away a few % and you will likely lose the game. Brisbane are better than what they dished up last round and at home in front of their fans they will be no easy beats we can be sure of that.

  15. The only thing that could have possibly made this article better was if the dorks were still playing at cold and windy Waverley and after another drubbing instead of catching a train home he had to trudge out to his car, only to be stuck in the boggy carpark for 6 hours listening to match reviews on the radio

  17. That was an interesting moment in the game, We were absolutely under pressure and our team made a few funadamental errors. he Dogs pressure rating at that point was 215 which is phenomenal. But they steadied quite quickly and returned the pressure back around onto the Dogs. It was game over after we saw off their best efforts

  18. There's a lot of confidence on here, and well there should be. We were cooked in the SF. The two H&A games are better indicators of our chances this week IMO. But there's a touch too much confidence. Hipwood has a history of playing well against us. The Lions mids aren't going to all be sub-20 touches again like they were against Port. Their midfield presents a similar challenge to the Dogs' midfield and at times last week the Dogs were on top. And this time there is a more dynamic forward line, not the Dogs' over-sized and pressure-lacking options.

  20. Laurie played a fairly defensive half forward game and I think he did a solid job of what was asked from him. But he would’ve know it was pretty much a 1 game contract. He can go back to the VFL now knowing he’s got the tank and discipline to do a job and he had a couple of skilful touches too. He’s not 23 and fighting for his last chance, he’s still a kid and 1 game in to a 2 year contract extension. Viney and Fritsch replacing Pickett and Laurie just means rejigging Harmes, Chandler and Sparrow’s roles a little bit. It’s not a big deal in terms of structure. They want Viney to do some stints at half forward and from what I saw at training they want Fritsch to do more on a flank too. So it’s not too drastic.

  23. Have it on good authority that it has been an unhappy team at the Brisbane Lions over the offseason. Not sure of the cause, or if it was a factor in them starting poorly v Port. But just passing on what I’ve heard.

  25. Sustained success brings with it expectation and arrogance. And I hate nasty supporters, you know, the group of ugly blokes who take pleasure in abuse and insults when the team is getting belted. All clubs have them, but whose worst ? It depends on personal experience. I have vivid and upsetting memories of the abuse suffered at Waverley after the Stynes/Buckenara episode. On another level I hated the arrogance of Jeff Kennett and his criticism and gratuitous advice to other clubs. Generally, I have found most Hawks fans pretty meek and mild. The more vicious were Bomber supporters, Collingwood and Blues supporters. And I must admit to some nasty run-ins with Crows supporters, the closest I have come to inflicting or receiving physical harm. The Cats are not vicious but they have fallen into the arrogance camp. So my attitude is to enjoy winning but remain humble. Enjoy the success but remember that failure is always lurking in the shadows. Be loud and proud when we are winning but never, arrogant, mean or insulting. Because the Mums and the Kids deserve better.

  35. Though not finishing up as a Demon, it would be remiss of us not to mention that Elise O'Dea has retired. (Co) captain of the club in 2019, twice all-Australian and multiple top 3 finishes in the B&F. She was one of the players that really drove this club forward in the first four seasons, but unfortunately the increased pool of talent meant that the game went past her in the end. https://www.womens.afl/news/113200/who-s-hanging-up-the-boots-your-club-s-retiring-players Eliza McNamara was drafted with the pick we received from Carlton for Elise, so we saw the best of her, then made the trade at the perfect time.

  37. The question i'd have if i was lions fan is why in the heck are they still running a 2010 style defensive system. I might also ask why they didn't address their lack of leg speed - which we ruthlessly exploit when up and about (and are even better placed to exploit this season because Kozzie is playing more mid time, so is around the ball more and we have added mcvee and Chadler who are both quick and Hunter, whilst not super quick over the first 5 metres seems to have good cruising speed. Added to that bowser looks even quicker than he was, and the team all look super fit)

  40. This. The only reason they beat us is because we were physically broken. Even their fans know it. We should destroy them, and Viney needs to LEGALLY send Zorko that small annoying piece of human excrement into next week.

  42. The guys mentioned the criteria for pressure acts, these are the official definitions from Champion Data for anyone interested: Pressure Act (Corralling): The lowest form of pressure a player can apply, where they are simply occupying space in front of the ball carrier to prevent them moving forward, or have a run at them, but not quickly enough to record ‘closing’ pressure. Pressure Act (Chasing): Where a player applies pressure from behind an opponent by chasing. They must be gaining ground or applying pressure significant enough to hurry the ball carrier to dispose of the ball. If the chasing player is on the verge of making physical contact from behind, then closing pressure will be imminent. Pressure Act (Closing): A higher degree of pressure than corralling, where the pressure player is on the verge of making contact with the ball carrier (either from in front or the side) as he disposals of the ball. The key point of difference between this and corralling is that there will be imminent contact and the pressure player is forcing the ball carrier to dispose of it immediately. Pressure Act (Physical): Applying direct physical contact to a player in the act of disposing of the ball or effecting a tackle that prevents an effective disposal from the ball carrier. Point structure for weighted pressure ratings: Corralling - 1.2 points Chasing - 1.5 points Closing - 2.25 points Physical - 3.75 points
