  1. cmon mate, I was trying to send a positive message about how it's healthy and brave to talk and mental health. I obviously was not trying to insult previously generations or war vets us men from previous generations were never encouraged to discuss this stuff and I don't think it's healthy

  2. Thanks for posting this As Maysie said too many (guys in particular) have traditionally been very reluctant to “show weakness” by opening up about depression in particular. His opening up is actually a sign of strength and all kudos to him for doing this. A sign of a true leader. Regarding the parallel discussion re PTSD particularly in the military I think times have changed dramatically since WW2 and the even Vietnam. So many tried to “be strong” and denied their truly horrific experiences and sadly so many ended with suicide or family destruction. Thankfully although they still suffer terribly the Afghanistan and Iraq veterans now at least are offered far better mental health support than veterans of previous conflicts. Still, their traumas and anguish surely cannot even start to be appreciated by those of us who were spared those traumas. Thanks Steven for having the courage to share your story. ❤️💙❤️💙

  4. Well spoken Steven. Great for kids (and adults) to see a tough guy like May talk about his feelings. Gone are the days of thinking psychs are for weak people, only the strong and brave have the guts to talk about hard stuff and get better

  5. Different times different pressures, soldiers are fighting for their lives and the lives of their mates as well as killing those you are fighting against. I have watched numerous interviews with people that fought on the front lines a lot of them ended up in psychiatric wards years after they returned home they didn’t have access to support and thought that they were weak if they asked for it. We now live in a far more enlightened time where help is more readily available and we celebrate successes yet anxiety, depression and the suicide rate remains at an alarming level. Thank goodness that people are building the confidence to speak out and share their personal issues in an effort to help others.!!!

  6. Very powerful video and words from Maysie. He may have done some things in his past that he's not proud of, but he shows admirable maturity here.

  9. I’m very happy with those words. Bravery and strength do not only refer only to physicality, but the bravery to talk about personal stuff when it’s easier to say nothing and suffer

  10. PTSD is a very different mental health concern than anxiety, depression etc. therapeutic solutions actually encourage victims not to talk and re traumatise individuals. There are new medication trials and different therapies to assist with trauma, talking therapies have not traditionally been beneficial for ex servicemen. apples and oranges

  12. Very moving. I love that he's had the courage and faith to live his life and face the dark moments which in the end, confront us all. I have total respect for him.

  13. Reckon it’s a good thing that they have plenty of time off between seasons. Reckon a lot of the guys spent most of last off-season fully focussed on the responsibility and burden of being reigning premiers. Come back fresh physically, but mentally too. Our intensity in 2022 was nowhere near the sustained levels that it was in 2021.

  14. Firstly it will take Jackson some time to be an effective participant wherever he goes and i'm taking into consideration his shin injury. Secondly he will need to realize his protection around the ground strategy. Third, the first part of the season will have him identified as a prime target of nullification and Max aint there...

  15. It’s not rocket science right. Keep ‘em guessing. The moment we see the oppo setup for one side we kick to the other.

  16. Can't get around the paywall but the Herald Sun alluded to the fact that it would be utter stupidity if Gawn plays primarily as a forward this year with Grundy in the side. One of the key advantages of this ruck duo is the ability to rest Gawn (who's no spring chicken) throughout the season and have him absolutely cherry ripe for September. I hate using injuries as an excuse as it discredits the opposition but after re-watching the Brisbane final, the big man could hardly jog and was so far below his best that night (and got no help from the other bloke who's no longer with us). We have a WA into SA game in rounds 4-5. We have a Monday into Saturday game in rounds 6 and 7, and some ostensibly easier late season games against Adeaide, North and Hawthorn where Gawn could be rested and Grundy can shoulder more of the ruck load. I want to this ruck duo working to perfection in September.

  19. Good ruckman can often studdy and decelop a strategy to take an opponent out of the game, and/or match-up better against some opposition better than others. I agree that having 2 elite rucks would make it so hard for our opposition to take both of them out of the game. One or both are likely to dominate. Similarly, it should give our mids some really good unpredictability in terms of setup for the opersition to counter. Guys like Trac, Clary and Viney don't exactly need much of a head start, so if it gives them additional advantage, we could really tear some teams apart.

  22. I would like to think he was carrying an injury because those two finals game were some of the most softest and pathetic efforts I've seen from a big man. He was incredibly disappointing.

  23. Agree Jackson was average and felt like his 2nd half of the season was poor, not sure if he was carrying an injury. I think Grundy will be a major upgrade on the output we got from Jackson last year. The Demons now have the best two ruckman in the comp or at worst 2 of best 3/4 rucks.

  24. Unless we win the next two flags and Grundy is a key reason behind those flags, I'm sure Goodwin and Co first choice was to have kept Jackson (rather than trade in Grundy) due to the long term proposition of taking over Gawn. I thought Jackson was largely poor last year, but it was only his third year, and I still expect him to be a consistent top 30-50 player in the AFL in the peak of his career.

  25. No question he made his mind up at some stage through the year. I don't think he was every coached to leave, in fact he was given a lot more ruck time in the back half of the year. Max was injured and struggled after queens birthday, Luke was having little impact as a forward mainly due to Tmac being injured and B Brown completely out of form, Luke couldn't be that third tall option. With Grundy and Max, I think the club is thinking we might only get 15 games home and away where they both play, we can rest one knowing the other can have the same impact. We can manage the 2 to ensure they are flying together for finals, I reckon that was the reference to Geelong, player management.

  30. Personally I can’t wait to see big Max and Brodie dominating the ruck duels and providing AA relief if either is injured or sore. Our midfielders should get first look in majority of cases, something we are not used to.!!!

  38. @Monbon has PM-ed me an answer which, though not my correct answer, wins the Perpetual Prize for Most Amazing, Arcane, Academic and Attention-to-detail Alternative Answer. I suspect such an effort will never be matched. As to my correct answer, remember it is made to order not only for Monbon but also for @DubDee. I'm thinking the latter might be more at my level of Google-able knowledge than Professor Monbon's knowledge level 😄

  42. I'm a big fan of the Viney clan but Todd sticks out like a sore thumb in that team. A very good player, for sure, but only had a few seasons where he could be considered truly elite. Was a butcher with the ball for most of his career. Max and Clarence are obvious inclusions (goodbye Stynes and Viney) and Trac certainly gets a gig in the emergencies (replacing Wells or Alves), if not yet the final 22.

  43. That would eliminate Spencer (7 years, 122 games), Warne-Smith (9/138), Chadwick (9/141), Ridley (9/130 - 5 flags!!) and Mithen (9/153). Fwiw, I think Clarrie’s already there, and is one of our all-time greats, Trac not far behind. Together with Max we are blessed to be able to enjoy 3 of our best-ever stars playing together in our current team. And from what I’ve read and heard I wouldn’t be dropping Spencer, Mithen and IWS from our rolling Team of the Century.
