JT has: - made a bold move for Oliver - offered what would’ve been the Jacko pick for Zak Butters - drafted Jacko - made a really bold move for Pickett - made solid moves for Bowey and JVR at the back of the first rounds The case against is Weid and to a lesser extent Laurie. Although they were both the second players picked and didn’t seem specific targets like Pickett was. Strength of the drafts doesn’t matter because there’s no guarantee a team does a deal for a top prospect next year. It might be picks 8 and 12 but no one will give us 5 next year. If you’ve found someone you think is a special prospect and is gettable you don’t care that next year has equally special prospects.

I think the difference is that when you are trading up the order you aren't trading for a draft pick, you're trading up for a specific player or a couple of players. A first round pick next year gives you a wide range of potential outcomes, including that the players available at your pick aren't the types of player that you're particularly interested in, whilst using it on a player now reduces that uncertainty and (theoretically) improves the likelihood of that player succeeding in your system. If we have a player that we are confident will be around at 19, and we are super keen on getting them because they fit with our team/system/whatever, then I'd have no hesitation in trading a future first round pick +37 for pick 19. Because at that stage we aren't trading a future first and pick 37 for pick 19, we're trading it for player XYZ who we want. It will depend on the quality of that specific player (and needs, team timelines, etc) as to whether the trade makes sense or not. If you're just looking at it mathematically (future pick 18 + 37 > pick 19) then it won't make sense .... except that the players themselves aren't draft picks, they're unique individuals. I'd happily trade one of our future first round picks for a player we really want. We will at least be guaranteed of selecting a player we really want, rather than just the possibility of doing so next year.

I never understand the theory that one draft year is worth holding out for. Is the difference really going to mean that a pick 5 this year would only be a pick 20 next year? I seriously doubt it. The most rewarding thing for a young player with talent is being in a highly professional system for a year. Get ‘em in. Show ‘em how it’s done. See what they can do. A bird in the hand and all that.

Not a fan of this move this year. Next year is supposedly a super draft, and we’d be trading a pick that will be anywhere from pick 10-18 in that draft for pick 19 in a weaker draft. Usually a fan of trading forward as we’ve done previously as it enables you to get a year of development into a youngster. Not this draft period though.

The other scenario is if you think the player/s you rate at 19 is vastly better than the one you think will be available at 37. If we have players that we rate as being worthy of pick 13 and think that one/some of them will be available at 19, then we will effectively be trading for another pick 13. And, of course, some players are far more valuable for some teams that they will be for others. What do you think the likelihood of Freo selecting a ruckman or Carlton selecting a key forward with a first round pick? Conversely, imagine that scenario with Freo picking the tall forward and Carlton picking the ruckman? There will be some players that complement our playing group better than others, so we will rate them higher than others. There's certainly an element of guesswork about what players will be available. Part of trading up is to remove a lot of that guesswork and you will pay a premium to remove that risk. We're lucky that we have a lot of good players and we can really focus our recruiting on getting a few quality players rather than needing to take as many picks as we can to get talent into the club. That means that the premium to target specific players is worth more to us than it will most other teams.

I cannot believe the negativity on this site regarding M.J The "nice hands , nice kick" is a bloody briliant start if you ask me. In fact he has a great leap and clunks marks in contested situations, something Sam Weideman hardly ever did. He is Brave and will back into a pack. He is a very accurate kick for goal. He can conjure something from nothing, and he can find space where there should not be any. Other than that he wants to learn and will listen to his coaches. He will put on some weight and strength in the next few seasons. Is that enough?? I think it is. To turn this convo around, if we dont take him and he turns out to be a GUN, I will for one be on the warpath, so will a few other posters around here and the Footy Dept will RUE a lost chance. And before anyone asks if I have seen him play live, The answer is yes.

How can you say such a thing when we haven't even selected a player with any pick received from the LJ trade? Nobody has any idea how it'll turn out. Even if we end up staying at pick 13, you've got no idea who that player will be. Or what we'll have in store for next year's draft. Talk about gun jumping. LJ could do his knee next year for all we know. There's no point worrying about this so early on. It's draft picks at this stage lol!?

Yarrawonga kid from where I grew up. Know Caleb and his family real well. High work rate running machine who is a rangey wingman similar to Isaac Smith. Left footer who can kick the footy fairly well when on the run, but generally uses the footy well. His running power really is what sets him apart from others and its very impressive for a kid his age that was getting huge GPS numbers. He played senior footy for Yarrawonga this year in the strong Ovens and Murray league and even played off in the grand final against a Ben Reid coached Wangaratta Magpies who are one of the powerhouse sides of the competition. I watched him on the day and he didn't get overawed by the big occasion once. He kicked a crucial goal during the match that nearly dragged Yarra over the line and even took a pretty courageous hit as well. So just shows that he's ready for senior footy in my opinion. I try to not say too much on players/kids that I know from a personal level just because of not wanting to sound too bias so I try to stay out of these kind of discussions. James Jordon being another. Obviously I'd be wrapt to have him at the dees, but with Hunter coming in and Howes and Woewodin already developing away as potential wingman then im sure he's a bigger need for us more so then a key forward perhaps. Either way, I'll be stoked for when he gets drafted either way.

Those going to the W awards have split off. The rest separate into their lines. Forwards goal kicking, mids practicing stoppages and defenders are one on one marking. One of the volunteers tell me they are flying up Saturday.

Whilst it included pick 3, the report also said 4 and 5. Logic (as well as what I’ve heard) says that we wouldn’t attempt to trade up for guys that North have already picked.

Agree. and it can mean many things. Often a strong draft is referred to by recruiters as solid talent extending into the 30's rather than tapering off at the teens. Every draft there are guns. Going all-in for targeted players that we want is fine by me. has worked so far. Most other teams are late to the party when it comes to aggressive pick trading

You’re entitled to rant, Docs D. This is a totally rant-worthy issue. This is how ridiculous it is: there’s cheer squad members who’ve missed out on tickets despite having AFLW and Demon Army membership along with their MFC membership. These are people who are totally invested in the AFLW and haven’t missed a match to date. The Club is currently trying to sort something out for them. But this shouldn’t be an issue, and wouldn’t be an issue had an appropriate venue been selected.

That would be a totally dumb idea for a club that has tied itself up in knots in recent years trying to game the system. As good as Jake Bowey was in 2021, let's not forget that Bailey Laurie was the other outcome from our pissfarting around in 2020. Laurie is a long way from a pick 22 at this point, and effectively cost us a first round pick in this year's draft. We have a strong hand in a strong 2023 draft. I'll be very disappointed if we don't keep all of those 2023 picks.

It would be poor planning to trade for the pick just to see what we can trade it to someone else for. Gws surely won’t trade it hastily on the first night when they have time overnight to field offers. Would suggest a future 1st and 37 for 19 and a return future 2nd is fairly equitable, whether that tickles gws the right way is the unknown. Sliding back from pick 16-19ish (pretty sure Gold Coast academy players are good enough to get bids early) to mid to late 20’s isn’t that severe a drop personally, I think lachie Cowan is a potentially great half back driver and will be available at 19. (every time I try think what we need I remember we have a Gus Brayshaw that plays so well everywhere. Great list build already)

I've got absolutely no idea this year! haha I've gradually faded out from watching the draft as we've gotten better as a team. The only goss I heard is that we were keen to get more under 22 year olds on board I believe to improve the quality of that next gen but also balance out some of the contracts we've done and are yet to do.

Yep we got to trust the back room people in that they know allot more than us mere supporters. Must have something in mind and if it doesn't work out then we still go into next years draft with a pretty good hand.

The Club did get an allocation, and of that a number of tickets were allotted for the Demon Army. Clearly not enough though. I’m sure the Club will be successful in getting them there, it’s just that it should never have come to this. It does seem as though we are taking it all a bit too casually, but I think that’s from the point of view of us fans. On Saturday Kate Roffey, when the subject of potential injuries due to the turf not being ready and the possibility of ensuing lawsuits, was heard to say quite emphatically that she’s “ready for it.” She’s extremely p*ssed off about the venue choice, just as much as we are.

Why would a team trade pick 4 for two future picks likely to be around 14 and 16? I guess we must be throwing in a 2nd rounder I back the recruiters. They would know how good a pick 6 would be in their view.

Not logging on within a nanosecond of the tickets becoming available. They’ve booked flights and accommodation, too. Our Club will likely sort something out for them as there’s only a few affected. Point being, this should never have been an issue in the first place.

I think it could be the Essendon pick. They have been the ones most open to a trade the whole time.

The guessing games begin as to who we are chasing in the top 5/6!! The following players are consistently mentioned in the top 6 in the main Phantom drafts. Ashcroft Wardlaw Cadman Sheezel Tsatas We sure aren't chasing a tall KPD in a move up to 3, 4, or 5. Unless of course there is a late Oliver type bolter!! With the exception of Cadman the top 10 in Twomey's phantom draft are midfielders between 180cm and 190cm and nearly all are Victorians. If nothing else it certainly rattles the cage of all those thinking the top 10 club selecions were pretty well set.

When you’re looking to trade in or up the draft you always pay overs so future first and 37 seems about right. We are only using one pick this year anyways. The fact that we are willing to trade out a future pick for 19 says to me that we do rate this draft as we clearly think there will be a quality player or players still available at that pick. JT often sees things a bit different to other recruiters and pundits and if he thinks there will be a good player for us at 19 then I’ll be stoked if we make the move and get someone in a year early as we have in previous years.

Our two F1 are most likely to be in the 14 - 18 range. Doubt GWS will accept just a F1 for pick #19. They will want something else which could be a F2 depending on which of our two F1 is offered and what other clubs are offering. Unless they get an 'offer they can't refuse' GWS will hold on to #19 until the first round of the draft is over when they will have all night and next day to negotiate the best deal. So doubt there will be any news before the first round of the draft is over. As an aside, draft pick swaps are closed until the start of the draft itself. Lots of wheeling and dealing in the meantime...

I wonder how many tickets were actually available to the public! The 600 grandstand seats would mostly have gone to Sponsors and VIP's. Hopefully MFC got an allocation. Greg Swan's dummy spit over the criticisms of choosing Springfield included comments about marquees being ready for the game. If these are inside the ground they would take up space that should be available for the other 7,000+ tickets. However, they will be filled by Corporate groups and other big spenders. If marquees are outside the ground will they set up temporary seating like they do at the Grand Prix for such groups? Regardless of the facilities for them a fair chunk of tickets would have been reserved for them. A tell tale sign of that: "Tickets for the grand final sold out hours after going on sale to the general public, with the Lions saying, should further tickets become available, they will be released via Ticketmaster on Thursday from 2pm (AEST)". Of course, 'further tickets' can only come from Reserved tickets not taken up!! AFLW GF tickets So how many tickets were available yesterday for the rank and file fans? Precious few I suggest.

Its difficult to project with U18s let alone key forward prospects. Last year Lemmey and Scully were the talk of the town and they look to be late draft/rookie prospects currently, while Cadman wasn't initially part of the AIS squad and was playing most of his footy on the wing. As it stands Archer Reid (201cm) and Nate Caddy (190cm but allegedly grown past that) are the two front runners that will be in the open pool. Jed Walters (194cm) played some solid footy this year and was the only one of two bottom agers to make the AA team, the other being Harley Reid. However he is part of Gold Coasts academy.

If we have identified a player we want and we can trade up for him, do it.
