  1. I get some of the trepidation with Jefferson and comparisons some here are making with Weideman. He projects as more of a Sam Reid type. Jefferson reads the ball in flight very well (amongst the best in the crop) and is mobile inside 50. His standing vertical allows him to reach over a lot of the opponents he came up against in the U18’s. Yes, he is skinny and yes, he will take time. The club showed patience with JVR, who has a physique that was further advanced than Jefferson. If the team select Jefferson, they’ll no doubt give him time as well. There is competitiveness and defensive effort in his game. He would have slid in recruiter rankings by now if it was completely absent (see Lemmey’s slide and the uncertainty around Keeler as examples), but the light frame really stops him from throwing weight around in a way Cadman has at times. Clubs will also note that Jefferson played through injury (leg) in the latter part of the season and still performed reasonably well.

  3. It's hardly democracy at Collingwood while only about 10,000 of their 100,000 members have voting rights. That club could implode and there's nothing the "members" can do about it.

  4. I went Friday night, and i have to say it was one of my most enjoyable experiences footy wise for a long time. Just loved it. It was like a throw back to another time (fun fact - the men' team played the last ever AFL game at PP - in 2005 against Fitzroy of all teams). Getting the tram up royal parade, with a stop right in front of the ground (Waverley park says hi). Princess park nestled in arguably Melbourne's most beautiful, and certainly most extensive, parklands (if you include the zoo, golf course and other parks stretching down to Flemington road). The weather was perfect, the ground was in brilliant nick, the crowd was in great spirits, the vibe was awesome and the noise was bearable during the breaks, meaning i could actually talk to my mate and enjoy the breaks. The AFL should progress the idea of making Princess Park the epicentre of women's footy in Victoria. Invest in infrastructure. Put in some permanent things for kids. And play say half of all Vic game there and/or perhaps specific marquee games. And most of all, the game was just so damn enjoyable to watch. Both teams played with incredible spirt and courage. Fearless. I was amazed none got seriously injured, such was the crazy brave energy. And under that pressure, some amazing skills and individual efforts. To top of a great night, i walked out, a tram came straight away got the tram to Flinders street and only had to wait 3 mins for my train. Princess park on a Friday night to my door in Altona in 75 minutes. Gold. Bring on the prelim.

  5. One more year. As expected, Hibbo and the Milkshake have got 1-year contracts. The final dance for each. Let’s hope it’s a good one. 😁

  7. You're ruling him out as a player based on 2 minutes of loosely brought together junior highlights?

  8. A bit of a domino effect from the midfield getting beaten at the clearances and lack of pressure up the ground. Hibbo has been a fantastic pick up and servant for the club and Melk, whilst not a Hibbos level has still been a good pick up

  9. A mate spoke to a players father who said we had 11 injured players playing in the finals. We know quite a few of them like Lingers for instance carried injuries for a lot of the season. Injuries can limit how much they can train which in turn eventually effects their ability to run out games. Might explain a lot. More likely explanation than Cats got conditioning right and we got it wrong.

  10. Matthew Jefferson is a very skilled, competetive goal Kicker who moves far and wide and reads the ball very well. He also clunks contested marks. He is also an exceptional young man. He is an attractive proposition for our first pick.

  11. I just love that Fritta has really dialed in his set shot routine now. It wasn't that long ago when we all complained his kicking was costing us games and I'm sure there was a lot of work put into this behind the scenes with great rewards. I was critical of the selfish moments in games in the middle of the season but the airplay this got in the media and David King's BBQ nickname went over the top I thought. Solid season, often as the no.2 key target. Great job Bayley!

  12. Yeh, it was a great night, wasn't it? It was my fourth time going to Princes Park this season, I went to the Bulldogs/GWS game in Round 1, then the Casey GF, then Melbourne/Carlton game and then Friday night. Every single time was a fantastic atmosphere and heaps of fun. Even ending up ankle deep in mud outside the ground reminded me of the 80s!!

  16. Good to see! Great additions and we got the better end of those deals. Both will play 100+ games for us and set standards in how to play to those that drove our flag win

  17. The skill set he brings to the club is absolutely irreplaceable and provides a point of difference from other small forwards. Whatever the club did to try and convince LJ to stay, the club needs to do 200% more with Kozzie. A critical re-signing.

  18. ex DeeSpencer "But boy was he inefficient with the ball in the midfield. Overall he had a good year but I just don’t agree with the value of such a long contract and surely plenty of $$$ to a player who’s greatest attribute is versatility. There’s a downside to every position Gus moves as it throws out team balance given he doesn’t blend in as a role player nor does he have the standout attributes to be locked in any given role. " Ithink you have forgotten how well he got the hard ball when under pressure i.e. Grand Final 2021. Rather than hindering team balance he provides the versatility that enable team balance to happen. His capacity to take on vatious roles and succeed in those roles just makes him nearly indispensible.

  19. I think if May kicks out to the left after each point and we kick to a pack in the forward pocket we will smash it this year!

  20. Gus had a great season and showed his versatility. Should've been AA half back flanker IMO and I didn't know he had it in him! No idea what role or position he'll play next season, but I do know he'll do it very well. Gus is a very good footballer, plain and simple. The fact he's able to play such a variety of roles successfully is testament to his footy IQ, skillset, and attitude. He's a truly loyal team member who does what the team needs him to and I've got huge respect for the way he goes about it. His new contract was a big win for the club, as he's hugely important from a cultural perspective as a leader and mate. Looking forward to what Gus can achieve over the next few season as he's in his prime as a footballer.

  21. ‘Many’ is an overstretch. Maybe you’re a Nostradamus Picket, but I remember vividly the calls by numerous supporters of “why would we pick the fat kid from the country who has only come on extremely late and labeled the ‘bolter’ when Parish is right there”.
    3 points
  22. Opinion is fine, but ridicule and judgment on an 18 year old based on a 2 minute highlight package is a bit rich. Remember when people had a meltdown over Oliver being picked over Parish? With the state of our list, and the amount of hits compared to misses we’ve had in the last 10 years, I think everyone should be backing whoever the club pick rather than making a judgement over the blokes who are paid to and who ultimately delivered us a Premiership list 😂😂

  23. Both semis are on a Saturday which probably means both prelims will be on a Saturday too (19 Nov). The GF, if in Melbourne, will be on either the Saturday (Vic. State Election Day, but that doesn’t make any difference) or the Sunday, and if in Brisbane, (Bris are pushing hard to host it) on the Saturday. This is what we’re hearing but nothing is official yet. I hope it’s at Princes Park too, Dub. Awesome venue and we play well there. I’d love if the GF was played there, too (assuming we make it) but it would most likely be at Marvel. Or worst case scenario- in Brisbane. Edit: I just heard our prelim is most likely to be played at Princes Park on the Saturday. But that’s still unofficial.

  24. Yes Docs some D/Lers have got very short memories OR selective choice overruling the JT record for recruitment. Yes Weid was not tick but Jesse was largely successful. JVR is being willed as our next best forward yet JT can't be trusted to select the next best option available!! Strange bedfellows some D/Lers. Of course we are all experts and we want a finished product hot off the draft ! No Casey training and improvement or Choco kicking school. Must just about kill his opposition and kick 55m both feet . Oh and no West Australians please they miss the family dog too much. Again JT we trust in the draft and often up trading in selections for our benefit.

  25. I agree. The cats seemed to manage player loads far better than us to be healthy at the end of the season. But I think it is part of a learning curve, it was the first time we made a GF in 20 years and how players are managed the following year was a new process for the club and as far as I'm aware the support staff as well. We'll be better for it in 2023.

  27. Suspect they have done that and know that answers Doubt they will air them publicly The question will be whether the coaching staff change the game plan or continue with the same old same old that got them to second on the ladder I hope they add variety because clubs have worked us out and the predictability killed us 8 x 90 pts or more scored against us vs 2021 only one did that happen.

  28. Bloke goes into the Lexus Centre to see what it's all about. Goes into the social club there and orders a beer. Standing next to him at the bar is Dane Swan! Bloke says: "Hey Swanny. Ya wanna hear a Collingwood joke?" Swan says, "Lissen mate. See the bloke next to me? That's Jordan de Goey. He don't mind a fight, just sayin'. An' see the bloke next ta him? That's Alan Didak, an' he likes hangin' 'round wiv bikies. Ya still wanna tell that joke?" Bloke says, "Nah, not if I'm gunna have to explain it three times."

  30. I just assumed that the higher ranked team in AFLW got the choice of venue based on Adelaide hosting it last year. I would be filthy if I was Brisbane and had to play at Marvel. As a Demon fan I am delighted by this unexpected turn of events.

  31. Not that it's ever an excuse and you play who you play, but copping Brisbane in that semi final really did not help us. By that point they had too much film and study acquired on us (especially with the most previous game being 2 weeks previous). It is hard enough for anyone let alone Hibberd to play on one of the league's best small forwards 3 times and come up trumps every time. I also thought Smith was labelled a bit harshly in the 21 QF, there was 1 goal that I definitely thought he erred but little else apart from that. If we take that approach with Smith then the same should be taken with Hibbo. Beaten? Yes, disgraced? No.

  32. Great all round season from Gus and was unlucky not to sneak in to the main AA side. Like others I might have had slightly higher hopes when he moved into the middle but we know what we get from him now and there's tonnes of other mids in this comp that butcher the ball with regularity.

  33. It’s not cut and dried though. The GF is said to be at Marvel regardless of who’s playing. Brisbane are currently insisting on hosting it should they make it, which is fair enough. I’m guessing no announcement until the semis are done.

  37. Everyone agrees we need another key forward and probably a Kozzie type too, but key forward is probably the main need. Therefore if Jefferson is available at our pick, unless we have a key forward coming next year or a much better player has slipped down the order, or we just like another available player more, it looks likely then we will go for him and give him a couple of years to develop. Tom, BBB and JVR will probably cover next year with Max also filling in for bursts. That could then resolve our key forwards for years to come.

  41. The crowd at Ikon Park was definitely dissapointing. Lovely balmy evening, but very few there considering the players close contacts were probably half the crowd. From the west myself I refuse to trek out to Casey any more, but try to get to any game within inner city, but this year we were so often at Casey or interstate it just highlights our issues of a home ground. Maybe we would have got more at Casey? I think we'll win it this year and if our last two finals are at Ikon Park I'll be wrapped. Free parking everywhere 2 minutes from the ground. This is Daisy's last hurrah I would think and if they finally get a flag it would be fitting for the standout icon of the Women's game. I think Daisy will be as important and as much loved in Melbournes history as Robbie Flower in years to come. People really should be taking their chance to see her in action. Also if your as lucky as me you might also get to see Allissa Bannen go for a 7 bounce run around the wing leaving a couple of crows players in her dust. Wow, she's terrific.
