  1. Two in rehab, Rosman and Tmac. BBB on the ground late and in runners, joined the main group, for about 5 minutes, then back into the sheds. Joel Smith training in the forward groupings. Bowey was with the seconds. The seconds left the field,. Jake Lever did his own warm up, then joined the group, appears unhampered. Jackson in with the group. Now they have all left. A quick 1/2 hr. Harmes is doing a little extra work.

  6. I wondered why JJ was puffing so hard after his goal about 3 minutes into the second quarter and just had another look on replay. It started when Rivers left his man and intercepted the ball inside defensive 50. He handballed to Petracca He gave a short kick to Viney. The raging bull charged downfield while doing a blind turn and breaking a tackle. He handballed to Sparrow. He handballed to Langdon. He ran to about 60 and kicked it over the head of Fritsch and his opponent into the arms of JJ who kicked a goal from the top of the goal square. When I looked back at the start of the passage of play, JJ was comfortably inside defensive 50 when Rivers intercepted in what looked the ideal position to fill up space on the other side of the ground. He just sprinted for the other end and left his opponent for dead. It was a massive run that was rewarded. I presume many similar runs are made every game without getting near the ball but it did show how Melbourne are able to use Brayshaw at halfback or now in the midfield without losing much on the opposite wing to Langdon. And it was a terrific end to a great passage of play that might have rather pleased the coaches.

  7. Between this, and the other messages from the club in the last week, I think we've got a clear strategy on how to manage this. Radical empathy. We're not going to pressure the kid. It's his decision and we'll put a case forward at negotiations, but more importantly he is part of the team and enjoys being here. If he leaves that next year fine, but while he is here enjoy it. This demonstration of cultural excellence and empathy, is a big counter offer in itself when the other club and media are heaping pressure on you.

  10. They all did a warm up and some run throughs from goal to goal together. They then split up into their lines and went to three drill stations, which they rotated through. I watched the one that Williams took. He wanted them to look around then perform a sharp 10 meter pass. He didn't stop talking. The group split into seniors and seconds. Just as they were getting warm they left. There was minimal kicking, and everything was 1/2 pace. Thought it was great that nearly the whole squad was together.

  12. People can say what they like, however he’s going to be a star . We need to hold firm and play hard. For mine we’re giving one of our best up and comers to a premiership rival . But he’s also a tall and we all know how hard they are to find and the value they hold. My price is Hayden Young and a first rounder. Hold firm on this and we will get it. We have a player greatful to the club who doesn’t want us to lose out, and will sign short term if the deal isn’t right. We actually really hold the upper hand

  16. So a quick round up of last Friday mornings Brekky. Jackson will go in my opinion. Goodwin stated “Fremantle will pay a lot for Jacko.” Wasn’t a definite he’s going but I can’t recall Goodwin saying ‘if’. spoke glowingly about the group when Karl Langdon who was MC asked about. Goodwin spoke about the conversations he has with certain players. The below is paraphrased but accurate. Petracca - he has a father son relationship with where CP needs varying levels of feedback at times to suit his personality. Gus needs cuddles. Viney just wants to be hit between the eyes with any feedback regardless of praise or criticism. Max - “you just can’t have a sensible conversation with Max”. 😂 His first slide of his 2021 pre season ppt presentation was “Grand Final Day, how are we going to play” He wouldn’t disclose what this years is but reading between the lines I think it aligns to the ‘dynasty’ chain of thought and what the team can sustain and achieve if they stay together. Hes really happy with the development of the young blokes and mentioned that they could all play in the team atm if injuries dictated it. Bluntly admitted his relationship with Bartlett was poor. Addressed Fritsch over the last couple weeks incidents. Lots of other things reviewed that we’ve already seen in the media such as his own revival and his mentors etc that he connected with. But the thing that made me the most pleased was his utmost confidence that the team issues had been addressed and that we would see that tonight (Friday). Also picked myself up a WEG framed premiership poster signed by Goody for $225 in the auction.

  20. Just been watching the QB game against the Pies again. 7min to go in the 2nd qtr we were 5g to 0g We had no May, Petracca was recovering fm covid still, Gawn did his foot, TMac was out, Turner went out with concussion. They controlled the corridor. Cox had a day out as we rejigged our defence and were short on talls. I think we wipe the floor with them this week

  21. I can't recall a player be8ng specifically asked about loading, so this interview by Tony Leonard with Jake Lever caught my attention. How you interpret Jake's response will probably depend on where you sit with loading, but it is intersting nonetheless. 22. There's a difference between being an expert on football and an expert at analysis and therein lies the problem with football commentators. They may have great knowledge of the game (e.g. tactics at stoppages, defensive set ups or forward craft) but they show a lack of understanding of basic principles of data analysis and interpretation (e.g. consideration of data quality, causal direction, confounding factors). They also express common cognitive biases such as recency bias (David King ) and overconfidence bias (Dermie). This is to be expected; just as it takes years to develop a knowledge of the game so to it takes years to acquire proficiency in data analysis & interpretation. Alas, sophisticated analysis and interpretation would make for dry media content (though the Mongrel Punt shows it's possible) . So, content makers proceed with the maxim "enrage to engage"!

  28. It does make sense when you consider 18 man defense is built upon the ability to cover ground at repeated intensity throughout the course of a game. Fatigue inhibits a teams ability to do that and heavy loading periods cause fatigue to set in earlier in a game allowing teams to be overrun in games (like we were against Freo, Sydney and Collingwood earlier this year). Of course other factors also come into play such as in game injuries, form, adherence to game plan/structures and the old fashioned players being "up" for a game. Put it this way, had we been dominated from start to finish in a game and lost by 10 goals+ I wouldn't say loading is the primary factor. But leading a game by 4-5 goals before being overrun in the 2nd half with in game injuries contributing I think loading is a big factor particularly when players look lethargic/sluggish compared to previous weeks. Players don't just lose the ability to run and cover ground The coaches wouldn't be giving these games up but it's short term pain for long term gain. I'm sure they expect us to win every game we play but if we lose a couple midyear after winning our first 10 and come home with a wet sail I'm sure they'd consider that an ok outcome.

  29. Brayshaw going to the middle allowed Salem and Rivers to play more familiar roles - I saw this as a huge positive for the team. Where do you both see Gus playing out the year, and if Harmes is cleared to play, does he automatically come back in?

  33. He got a hard tag from Aish and did the team thing. We all know he is a great footballer that would rather a premiership medallion than a coaches award around his neck. Still has a great chance and will unlikely attract a tag for the last 3 games.

  39. There's no doubt in my mind that part of Weideman's role in this game was to restrict Pearce from getting to contests and taking intercept marks, and he did a good job in that respect. But for a guy who is clearly low on confidence to be so reluctant to tackle and chase and generally impact the game is just bizarre. The easiest way to get involved in the game is to lay a tackle or make a block that helps a teammate.

  41. I love hearing the players talk about the run home and relishing the fact that we have a run that is against the better teams of the competition as opposed to a soft finish like what the cats have. The talk and attitude (and way we played on Friday) is so much more like what we experienced in 2021 as opposed to what we've seen for much of this year. This Friday will be like a final, the winner comes close to banking a top 4 finish, loser goes back to the pack. Cats by contrast will have to go from having almost practice matches to finals atmosphere, away from their home.

  45. So came the cry from the Dockers as the S.S. Fremantle set sail with the hopes of all of their supporters on board on the mighty ship. Their task was to do nothing more than to defeat the Melbourne side and a top four position on the ladder was assured. The problem for them was that their leaky boat came up against the mighty battleship - Team Demon and it didn’t take long after they left port for their vessel to develop a multitude of leaks. The first salvo was fired by First Officer Jack Viney, who simply set the standard for the match with his brutal attack at man and ball. He had 14 possessions in the first quarter alone and he didn’t stop there amassing 33 in total of which an incredible 16 were contested. For this the Fremantle midshipmen simply had no answer as he pounded them into submission. The Dockers ‘only hope was to negate the effects of Clayton Oliver by putting a hard tag on him in the form of James Aish but while that may have worked in theory and partly in practice, the outcome was that the plan hit the rocks courtesy of Viney and Christian Petracca with 16 contested of his own. To add to the Freo misery, the Demons moved Angus Brayshaw back into the middle to turn the tide and completely drown any momentum they might gain. He recorded and incredible 564 metres gained for the game, and would have no doubt told Ed Langdon about this statistic at game end. Sadly all they could offer was an ageing Mundy and Angus’ younger brother, Andrew. However, it was a bit like putting up an ageing prawn trawler up against the USS Nimitz with its mountains of firepower. The skipper, Max Gawn, is showing signs of return to better form, although his marking exploits still continue to be well down, posting only two for the game, while his compatriot in Luke Jackson only managed a single. This has been a common occurrence in this and past weeks, and we all know the importance of both their aerial skills. At the first bell, the Demons led by two goals, and it wasn’t the only bell tolling for the Dockers. With the start of the second term, Melbourne began piling on another three goals as they peppered the goal front. With Bayley Fritsch and Kozzy Pickett enjoying the incoming salvos, the lead had blown out to over four goals by half time. Sadly, all this opportunity could not be taken advantage of by Sam Weideman, who could only manage a solitary mark, kick and goal for the whole game. And that was after the ball fell into his lap from a scrubby up field kick. That experiment should be finally put away, and the selection committee need to bring in a player who can provide more output than one disposal in a game. The onslaught continued from the Demons in the third with another three goals while the Fremantle tinny continued to take on water, now finding themselves over six goals down come the final change. Importantly, the defenders had continued to tighten the screws and allowed only a single goal through their nets, for the quarter. Freo simply had nowhere to go when they looked up field and the Lever, Petty and May brick wall combined with 20 intercepts during the game. The final quarter was much more of the same. A single major to the Dockers for 30 minutes of game time, while the Demons piled on two more for good measure to run out 46 point winners and add to the sea sickness of all those on board the S.S. Fremantle. This was a return to form for the Demons. And all in the absence of a genuine tall target up forward. With the return of Ben Brown from injury, the side is looking more like the one that took the top prize last year. And come this week, the test will be to show that there is a genuine game between the best and the also rans, when they come up against an equally hopeful Collingwood armada. Well, the battered Fremantle skiff hobbled back to where it came from, now knowing what is required to be at least a top four side, having fallen to sixth following the results from other games. With a six point deficit to the top sides and an upcoming game against the Bulldogs, their ship might well have sailed. It is a lesson the Pies might learn, since the history of Armada’s winning the battle is not all that common, especially when the opposition have turned the tide and have re-armed with their most trusted lieutenants on the field, unlike the last time they met.
