  1. Melbourne supporters who say that was the most “pathetic” football we have played in a long time and that we’re “not a proper team” don’t have a basic understanding of football. Melbourne are a system-based team. This means that our team is designed to play the same way week in, week out. We could be like Geelong and change tactics every week to smash bottom sides by 80+, but that’s what let’s you down in finals. That’s why teams like Geelong have done nothing in September. Some of our fans have no idea just how good we have it. We had the same type of performances against bottom teams last year and what happened? We won the [censored] premiership. So those people suggesting that we’re not gonna perform against the better teams as a result of how we played today are absolutely clueless about the game.

  3. That’s a rough assessment. He’s untidy with the ball, which is why he isn’t best 22, but he’ll play whenever Viney can’t.

I’ll be the horizontal one, as opposed to the vertical ones, ie the ones who AREN’T lying on the turf having just tripped over. #squadLife #KlutzLife #wtfWasIthinkingAcceptingWhatIsSureToBeAdebacleSinceI’mClumsyAF

  6. To-do list: Parkrun - check. Got a good time for an older bloke so smugly bragging about it to family Voting - check. Had a good chat to a local independent candidate who has no chance of winning but is giving it a crack which I admire greatly. Minestrone soup - in the slow cooker Clean out the carport gutters, and desludge the bathroom u-bends - TBC after lunch Then plonk in front of the footy and hopefully: Ben Brown to kick 10, while smiling and enjoying himself. Gawn, Petracca and Oliver to take a back seat while Sparrow and Jackson tear the Roos apart. Pickett and Spargo to cause havoc. Postgame, get onto Demonland and enjoy gloating about being the best team in the league Watch whatever game is in TV, knowing neither of the teams is as good as us. Yes, more gloating.

  7. On your first paragraph, you are way overthinking it. The most simple explanation is Melksham is the player most suited to the role Harmes plays, and Dunstan is the player most suited to the role Viney plays. I reckon as fans, we try to make selection out to be way more complicated than it is. Selectors making last minute announcements to “keep a player hungry” is surely not a thing.

  12. Just amazing how people's goalposts have shifted since we've become a good side. I get that we're better now and should expect better, but my word the entitlement creeping in here is worrisome.

  14. They threw everything at us for 3 quarters and we pulled further ahead each time. The dam wall broke at the end. Enjoyable game, just loving watching this team.

  15. people need to realise that every team is throwing absolutely everything they can to beat us. everyone wants to beat the best. we're not going to see many huge wins especially this early in the season unless teams completely throw in the towel which really only GWS has. WC gave it everything they could. As has North today. any mid table team playing North is going in with North just wanting to play their style. They get trounced. Play Melbourne and it's all about making it as difficult as possible for them to win. The margin minimisation strategy makes it seem like we're playing poorly and the opposition is playing well. in reality it's just two teams both competing in a great contest.

  16. I've voted - postal vote. Preparing lentil soup, may sit outside in the sun after that and do the cryptic crossword. Not going to the match .... hate Doglands and have a commitment tonight (see below). I'm predicting a woeful attendance ... 25,000 is my guess. Attend Don's Party tonight. (The younger folk in this forum won't understand this reference.)

  18. I was one of the 13,000 at the ground. It was genuinely such a weird vibe for the first quarter. It had all the feeling of a preseason game. I also think that stadium plays very differently to any other ground. North tried to work through our zone with precision short kicking that in all seriousness they couldn’t execute on at any other ground. The surface is like carpet. It’s like the difference between indoor soccer and soccer. The basic skills are the same, but the games play entirely differently. I thought we just had a better quality of player, and that was the difference. Both teams tried hard.

  23. She loved it at first sight. Although for a relatively recent arrival to the country (she does her citizenship ceremony on Tuesday) she really has developed a mental disorder when cheering for the Dees. I swear she would physically harm anyone in our house who spoke negatively against the Dees on game day. .......aaaand so I will do the right thing just as soon as it is listed in her size on the Demon shop. Cos, you know, i don't want to die just yet. oh, and my own mother has been telling her she has questionable taste since day 1.

  28. Go dees. My wish list: - Fritsch to score minimum of 3 snags - defensive pressure well up in the midfield especially. - Lever to get some touch back. - Keep them to under 55. - Oliver to have a blinder and overtake Cripps in the Coaches award, back to back! - Sparrow to hit some finals Sparrow form. -Win by 60+.

  29. I actually rate it as a really good win. North were very, very good - tough at the ball, brutally physical (a bit too much at times) and ripped through us with a short passing game they could not sustain. We stood up, although we were horribly unclean for the first half. Clarry - superstar Well done Tmac, Spargo, May, Sparrow in the 2nd half, Lever in patches. Lots of handball practice this week at training please.

  30. Both North and Eagles arguably put up their biggest fights of the year against us outside of their wins. If North go into that with their normal plan we win by 180 points. They threw everything at us and it was still almost a 10 goal win. What do you people want?

  33. Yes but let's not that get in a good way of a rosy red and blue glasses.. If Naughton was in Melbourne jumper and making this kind of impact at the Dees people like ucanchoose would be hailing him the next Wayne Carey.. Naughton is a star and would make our forward line significantly better in a whole new level. He actually would have someone else to take the heat off him like Ben Brown unlike at the Dogs where he's copping the best defender each week and having zero support from the other forwards. Kicked 47 goals as a 21 year old last year and has already kicked 22. He's well on his way to kicking 50 plus this year.

  36. I agree with you about the attacking part. Disagree with you about the rest. Melbourne in 2018 finished 14-8 with a percentage of 131.4%. Should have been 16-6 after throwing away 2 games to Geelong. Carlton are 8-2 with a percentage of 114.6% and arguably should be 4-6 with Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn, Port & Sydney running all over them at the end and missing many many chances. Carlton's percentage is the giveaway and their luck is going to run out at some stage. Having said that, last night's win was meritorious given they were missing McKay, Pottonet, and lots of defenders. People have also made the comparison with Melbourne in the first half of 2021 but let's be serious. Melbourne started 9-0 with a percentage of 144.3%! I'm always disappointed with how fans rewrite our 2018 Season. The reality is we should have been top 4 which would have made a huge difference, had great wins against Geelong & Hawthorn in the finals and then played one horrible half against a well-rested West Coast in Perth. One side in the last 22 years has won from outside the top 4. It's bloody hard to do. That's the reality.

  39. At the train station. Plenty of people heading in early to Dreamtime at the G. I just said to an Essendon supporter I thought they’d renamed it ‘Screentime at the G’ - because Essendon are so rubbish most supporters should just watch on their phones. He didn’t laugh. I make friends everywhere I go.

  40. Down his throat? Come on, you’re coming across as someone who’s never seen him play for more than five minutes. He launches at everything and often plucks it when he has no right to. A fair chunk of this seasons goals have come from crumbing, quite a few on his opposite foot. His biggest knock is set shot accuracy. Again he’s 22 and improving. Every single team in the comp would pay overs to get him.

  45. Look, I think Carlton's gameplan is flawed too, but in all our losses last year our opponents went hell for leather and took us on through the middle. Carlton will do the same and have the talent to score against our backline. The way to beat Carlton is not exactly hidden - breakeven in contested possession. They are like the Dogs and a bit like us in 2018 - their one-wood is the middle, and if they don't dominate in the middle they are capable of being opened up defensively.
