Sorry Werridee but if you think that Weideman is not that much different to BBB Then I beg to differ. If u look at our structures BBB GIVES much more than Weeds in a number of ways 1 He runs far and wide and his leading patterns are much better 2 He is a much better Pack mark 3 He doesnt get pushed under the ball 4 He brings it to the ground more He comes STRAIGHT IN and I dont give a stuff who makes way for him!

Brown has played with desire in the seniors and I think you are underselling him. A run back with Casey would expect the main priority was don't get injured. I want to see Weid succeed too but to say they are close is a misnomer. If Weid gets more exposure it's not at the expense of a fit Brown. Weid needs to earn his place, and two good games in a row would be a good start. Too often he comes in with a flurry and then does nothing for the next few games.

Watching live, Bedford looked a class above VFL level last night. Quick, smart positioning, hard at it, clever ball use and brilliant lateral movement. Played quite a few minutes in the middle, as did Laurie.

Brown came back into the side last year off the back of a half-pace VFL outing and played a key role for the rest of the year. Must come back in immediately.

KC from Casey couldn’t make the trip to Williamstown so we conscripted The Night Watchman - CASEY BY HALF by The Night Watchman It was no walk in the park in the night for the highly ranked Casey Demons who ventured to Williamstown for their first away encounter on Saturday night. The winless Seagulls put up stout resistance throughout the game after a slow start and their first half was outstanding. The Demons lifted their intensity after trailing at half time and it was their superior fitness and class late in the game that gave them a flattering 100-65 result. Early on, it looked like it was going to be a cakewalk as goals to Van Rooyen, White and Laurie saw the Demons off to a flyer with a 19-0 lead after less than ten minutes. But the Seagulls rallied over the next ten minutes to snatch the lead before Moniz-Wakefield and White again gave Casey a two goal buffer at quarter time. Williamstown came out in the second full of running and shut down their opponents for most of the term to go in at half time with an unexpected 1 point lead. It was certainly not the scenario that Casey fans were expecting. It was only after the break that the Casey boys regained composure and took control of the game. Van Rooyen put them back in front and Chandler added to the lead after a well-earned free kick. Majak Daw’s conversion after a terrific pack mark had the Demons three goals up before the Seagulls offered some light resistance which was torpedoed by late goals to Woewodin and Munro before the last change which put the Demons 21 points ahead with the opposition tiring. In the end, the Demons worked their way to a comfortable 35 point win with a couple of late goals to Ben Brown and a second to the nippy Moniz-Wakefield. Overall it was a satisfactory result with nobody really starring for Casey as the team did its business in a workmanlike manner. It was probably Rosman’s best game at the club. Petty and Ellison stood firm in defence and Dunstan was steady in the middle. Daw worked tirelessly in the ruck. A number of young players flashed in and out of the play and are gaining valuable experience to bank away for the future but none are ready to step up to the big time tomorrow. The Casey Demons return home next Sunday for an assignment against league improvers Coburg and will need to be on the ball for more than half a game if they are to deliver the goods and retain their unbeaten record. I would have BBB in on the basis that even before his Covid protocol, he was our PREMIER FORWARD! I think it irrelevant what he does at Casey. I'll put my house on the fact that he will be in Next Week ( Baring any unforeseen circumstances) He just has to be in!!

Brown played tonight for fitness, not for form. His recent AFL form means he comes straight back into the side. He didn't need to kick a bag of goals to prove that.

Makes our modest win over GC in oppressive conditions look better now. GC are a very good side at least early in the season and at home.

No one knows. The umps certainly don't. They [censored] around with talking back to the ump and encroaching 1cm sideways of the mark if a player fakes a handpass. But what about the fundamental rules of the game? Leave contentious things like holding the ball/man out of it for the moment. They allow flagrant rugby passes. I'm not talking about slick handpasses where it's hard to tell if it's legal or not. I mean full on two handed scoops. They allow kicks that go 7 and 8 metres. They allow players to run more than 15 metres. They allow flagrant pushes in the back. Things that have not been seen in the game since year dot, until very recently. They're adjudicating to an imaginary version of the rules that only exists in someone's head. They can't get basic, fundamental laws of the game right. They are incompetent. The umpires are incompetent because they are led by incompetents who don't know what they are supposed to be doing.

I agree not many there are showing clear form to push some one out but as others have mentioned a dominant VFL display does not always translate and vice versa. Some of that is quality of opposition and game, the grounds played at as well as likely playing a VFL primary role to elevating to AFL in a supporting position. You are looking for the key attributes, fitness and touch that will translate into the required role at AFL level more so than volume of touches and significant impact. Bowey as some have mentioned is a great case in point. What excites me is whilst getting low touches, our kids in Laurie, Howes, Woewodin, JVR and others are just doing some of those things that are AFL level attributes whether it is one touch moments, speed of decision making or defensive intercept that show that with development they will be quality up a level when their time comes. All going well that time wont need to be in 2022.

in 2018 Richmond finished 2 games and 15% ahead of second. 3 games and 16% ahead of third. Third ended up playing second in the GF that year because the Tigers had one off night in an amazing season. In 2008 Geelong finished 4 games ahead of Hawthorn but still managed to have an off day on the one that mattered. We are going ok but the gap is never as wide as it seems and on any given day we can be made to look ordinary.

What Weeds showed Thursday was substandard. He has had plenty of time to show his wares. For me BBB has consistently delivered over the journey. If it came down to picking Weideman or Brown, BBB gets the nod every time IMO

I think Bedford is clearly doing a lot of things right in the eyes of the coaches. His intensity seems to have really lifted, which is a credit to him. Im not sure I agree with the idea that you need to dominate at VFL level. Bowey looked handy and clean at that level, but certainly never dominated. Brown looked out of form last year in the VFL and then came into the seniors and looked clean and assured. The system at VFL level is quite different because of the experience of the players, and that a 3rd of them aren’t able to be full time footballers. Forward of the ball you don’t get the pressure you would at AFL level, but also not the clean delivery and consistency of team structure. I think that works against all the boys mentioned here and the role they play. Ultimately Laurie was rated highly in his draft year with skill and poise. On bigger grounds and with better system he’s got the most upside for mine.

Bedford is good next up for Koz, ANB and Spargo but they have him covered at present. I dont rate Chandler highly. Laurie is playing more mid forward than forward. He shows some serious footy iQ and skill and will be a quality future player but needs a full season of development at Casey in 2022.

Hello all, Just for the sake of convenience, I am including for those who are interested the VFL losing 1988 grand final poster done by WEG (we will try to erase the horrible memories of how we got belted by Hawthorn in that grand final). I am a very big fan of WEG artwork and of VFL and AFL grand final posters in general. Obviously, for our drought breaking 2021 AFL Premiership we have seen the losing VFL 1958 grand final poster being used by Weg Art. However, I am hopeful we can look to use the 1988 (and the losing 2000 AFL grand final) poster(s) in the near future if we are lucky enough to have any sustained success. Anyway, here is what the 1988 VFL grand final poster by WEG looked like for the Melbourne Demons. This is quite a rare image as you would expect and it took me a bit of time to get access to (I had to politely ask a poster on Big Footy). Nevertheless, for those who are into history and memorabilia of the Melbourne Football Club it is worth keeping a copy of this image in my opinion. Here it is!

The reason I say we have to many small forwards is because of the lack of medium forwards we have I understand they all have different skills and roles but they are all small and will mostly play forward if in the team, none of them can cover Fritta if he goes down, how many genuine medium forwards do we have on the list 2 , one who happens to be our best forward in Fritta, and the other being Melksham who will be retired by the end of the year . We actually have 3, tracc but he just happens to be a dominant midfielder aswell We need another natural medium forward who kicks goals imo Howes ? Wing or HF The club certainly has had some gems over the years, fritta, jarrah, robbo, green, jacko Thoughts ?

From the little bit I’ve seen of JVR he is a potential replacement for any of the taller forward options other than Fritta of those it’s most likely he would replace either Weed or TMac - however he needs to consistently perform at Casey and build his knowledge of the game plan before he would be considered an option imo I do think he has a bright future though

Bedford: seems to have taken a step forward this year. Has genuine pace which is handy both in attack and to defend. But he’s slight, fumbly, lacks a fluent kicking action so struggles to weight kicks and lacks smarts IMO. The kind of depth that can help win you games but not the kind of depth you want to end up playing consistently. Chandler: stronger and smarter, with a cleaner boot. But still short and so far his VFL trick bag hasn’t worked at afl level where he can’t take marks or break out of traffic. Lacks top end pace to be a weapon both in attack and defensively. Think he’d be better suited at a spread them out and use the ball team like the Crows. Our afl game plan just doesn’t play to his strengths currently. If he finds a yard of pace or his tricks start coming off at afl level he could be handy, but he hasn’t had that consistent run to find out. Laurie: had a luckless year last year but frankly he’s looking a bit like the dangers of drafting for need and drafting in a compromised draft. Had a great under 17 year as a flanker in a dominant side but the gamble was he would be faster, stronger and a good mid in his under 18 year. He’s looked slow and unable to win consistent ball as a midfielder. The skills and tricks are there but if you’re small and slow you’ll battle as a forward, and you can’t play mid if you can’t win the ball. I’m sure the hope is for some kind of mix of at least a Spargo type forward and ideally a Shuey type midfielder, but that seems a mile away. 10 touch games playing decent midfield minutes are a big worry.

Players in good clubs who can't get games, but play ok, are seen as targets by other clubs. Some of our boys not making it into the 22, will be seen by the club as tradeable. This improves ours draft position and helps add further layers of talent to the list, while giving the players the chance to play senior footy.

You would hope, for example, that the umpires were disinterested. What mono was saying is that if you don't care, the correct word is "uninterested".

Not sure of tog %, but was on the ground in all 4 quarters. Played well, moved well and doesn't look too far away to my eye. Class above VFL level. Beautiful hands. (I went, and had my binos on him quite a bit)

No midfield can compare to ours. And no team can beat us defensively. Just get Salem and Petty fit and firing and we'll start blowing teams away. I would love Shae Bolton in my team though!

Agreed. Brown was trying his guts out in his early games last year but just wasn't fit enough to compete. He still isn't exactly dominant when the ball hits the deck but his repeat leading and pack crashing late last year and in his two games this year have been much better.

I don't think intensity was the issue for Brown. His was more that he was really behind the 8 ball in terms of fitness and conditioning. Let's not forget we're talking about a well established senior player in Brown who's kicked over 60 goals a year 3 years in a row at AFL level, compared to a guy who's battled at VFL level for 6 years running due to lack of intensity and form. Brown knows what the requirement of AFL intensity is and his record speaks for itself. Weideman is still lacking in that department.

That's my biggest knock on weed in a nutshell. Second efforts are seemingly not instinctive for sam, which is a big worry. I wonder if as a junior he played most of his footy as a lead up, true full forward who was a cut above and took plenty of marks out on a lead. So perhaps never really had much need for second efforts? Like all dees fans, I hope he makes it. And it is hard not think (hope?) tbat somehow the penny will drop one day as his weaknesses are more seemingly psychological in nature. But as you say he us a fair way into his career to still have to get his head in the game and play with elite intensity 100% of rhe time. He has signed a new contract, so there is no real downside for us to give him time at Casey and the ones when needed.
