  5. I think this thread about embarrassing records has reached its use by date. Time for something more positive. What records do we now hold that are ones we can be proud of? Jake Bowey tops the list of players who never played in a loss with 10. The next best, held be a few people is 9. Is the 12 goals in a row the best ever in a Grand Final? Has any team ever kicked three goals in less than a minute of game time? Please add to the list. Let's enjoy our true magnificence!

  6. It is crazy just how much bad luck Joel Smith has had in his short career. I would be surprised if he has ever managed more than 6 weeks in a row before something has forced him out of the team.

  9. I'm really disappointed to see BBB out. The pressure is now on Weid to back up his performance from last week and thereby cement his place in the side for a while. The pressure is also on Tmac to perform. I had him listed as an out if BBB was available. On the other hand great to see the Romsey boy back.,

  11. Just because Lever is coming in, doesn't mean we have to omit a known defender. I would have thought the obvious thing to do would be to bring Lever in and move Brayshaw back to the wing. This brings us back to our normal 7 defenders in the team (May, Lever, Smith, Bowey, Hunt, Tomlinson and Rivers). My suspicion is that when fit and ready, Petty will replace Tomlinson and Salem will push out Hunt, and that will then be our coaches best 7 defenders in the team (no Hibbo, Hunt or Tomlinson). With Brayshaw returning to the wing, I think the decision then becomes who out of Jordan and Sparrow is the medical sub. As far as the forwards go, when Brown returns (not 100% they play him after missing a week of training), I think they'll have a good look (3-4 weeks at least) of how things gel with BBB and Weeds as the KPF while TMac bides his time at Casey.

  12. Maybe because it was all tv viewing last year ( and getting the close up) but I was astounded by the amount of whacks to the head Max received in a number of games. They are clearly high contact but most times no free kick. I just don't understand how this continually occurs without penalty.

  13. No doubt. But they are unlikely to disqualify you from public office. In fact they may well help.

  17. Very true. Our 3yo has COVID after it spread through our family. He’s been hardest hit assumably because he hasn’t been vaccinated as yet. Nothing on earth could stop me cuddling him while he vomits everywhere, has a temp of a million degrees and is in distress. Pretty hard to not get whatever they have in that situation.

  18. I know a few people who had Covid and their other household members didn’t get it. However I don’t know a single family who had small snotty Covid positive children who didn’t pass it along to everyone else in the house. It’s super hard to avoid having contact with small kids who you are trying to keep alive.

  22. When you own a football swap card, you at least get to hold the card. Frame it. Burn it. Use it as a miniature cheese board. Whatever you want. With an NFT, you get to say you own the card. Even if it's just a JPG picture of a card. Even if someone else has a copy of the picture. (The actual paper card might not even exist.) Imagine if Dean Kent sold the moment when he kicked the goal to lock us in to finals in 2018. Someone out there gets to say "hey, see this bit here where Kent slots the goal? I own that." His mate might say "so what? I've got that on a video somewhere at home. And it's on the AFL web site, and Fox sports, and youtube, and so on." The first guy can say, "ah yes. You can watch that very special moment on all those places. But I OWN it."

  27. Smith offers us flexibility and he has improved his positioning, but there's a question mark over his positioning and disposal/decision making for me. The coaches are a fan, we all have our own views.

  33. I'm quoting you because you touch on every point I would also like to. I believe the reasoning for Brown not being in is because the team is travelling today to Adelaide. They like to fly the night before for interstate games and have a morning in the state to prepare for the game. Ben Brown would have to arrive at the game like an hour before the bounce, without training with the team for a week to play. That sort of preparation isn't ideal, and when you have talent like Tmac and Weid in the side why not let them play again. Smith is so unlucky! he's been so solid this year, but I don't mind the selection decision being forced here for Goodwin to bring Lever in. It's probably better mentally for Smith to take as a player as it is out of his control rather than form or a better player coming through. Which also means Tomlinson stays in. Tomlinson's fitness is a bonus, he's played 100% game time every game this year so that helps runners with extra rotations. I think Harmes, Bowey and Brayshaw will switch on the day for the bounce. Simon's probably toying with Ken with that.

  37. Ben Brown has been really good in the first two games with his leading patterns and strong up and down the field work. he could have had 4 or more week before last. Weeds was very strong in the air and could not have done much more other than kick a couple more that he should have. Those two should be certainties. T Mac has been very ordinary in three games so if it is down to form... He goes. Up the other end Lever is an automatic in and we need Hunts Run. Smith has been more or less a Revelation down back so far and he offers so much more than Tomlinson at this piont. So for me its BB for T. Mac and Lever for Tomlinson.

  39. On an individual bases we have a few record holders. Most hit outs in a season: Max Gawn - 1119 with an average of 44.76 per game. Season 2018. Most contested possession in a season: Clayton Oliver - 435 with an average of 17.4 per game. Season 2021 Most handballs in a season: Clayton Oliver - 482 with an average of 21.91. Season 2017.

  40. Given the depth we have, and that we played as late as possible last year - I'd think we might see a few guys rested in the early part of the season. We've got the round 14 bye, so that gives us the last 9 rounds to have the 'A' squad together as much as possible, but in the lead up to the bye, I think they might help a few guys out, both by giving certain players a rest from time to time and then also giving others on the edge a chance at AFL level to see if they can grab their chance or at a minimum gain some confidence. So this week I'd be leave BBB out again - it'd be hard coming of minimal training and none with the group. While I'd also be giving Tomo a spell. Lever to come in (naturally). Then over the coming weeks, give May a break (either for Petty or getting Tomo back), send TMac for a rest (to find form) when BBB is fully right, I'd even consider letting Gawn or Dogga have a week off - not at the same time! - and see how Daw looks at the top level again. Viney, Sparrow or JJ could come out for Dunstan with Oliver or Trac to play mostly forward for a week and Bedford in for a full game with Kossie, Sparrow or ANB having a rest (Chandler might come in too). I know it's always better to have the best 22 run out, but we need to make sure they are all fit and firing at the end of the year, rather than in the early stages. plus we saw last year with Hunt, then Smith then Hibbo that you need players to come in and play their role with confidence should injuries hit.

  42. It's available on the replay on the Official Melbourne site, just before quarter time. He turned to follow the ball and an Essendon player basically shirt fronted him. I can't believe the Tribunal allowed it to get a 'pass'.

  43. Really good calls. I think that is exactly what will happen, with the possible exception of Tmac staying in and Weed going out. I was of the mind that Tmac would stay in but i think you make good point about giving Weed a crack at it now. BB being a late out gave Weed an unexpected shot at playing and his excellent performance, combined with the need for BB to come back in, has given Goody a good opportunity to be true to his stick with a winning team philosophy AND give Weed his shot and the Weed BB combo a trial. And as you rightly point out we can afford to give that set up a solid trial over 3 to 4 weeks. Funnily enough, it is a mirror of the last years back and forth about the forward line set up - with the difference being Tmac is the one at risk of being dropped, not BB or Weed (well that's not exactly true - it still could be Weed). And like last year, i don't think Goody minds that at all at this point in the season as it gives them something to work on and they can land on the final set up in the back third of the season.

  47. Petty will be back next week or the week after since he's playing for Casey on Saturday. Lever's back on Thursday. TMac might be a better defender than Tomlinson (I'm doubtful) but IMO he's not a better defender than Petty. Why would you contemplate making further disruption to the backline just to keep TMac in the side for a week or two at best? Now if Lever doesn't start on Thursday and one of our other tall defenders drops out then maybe they could consider this option. You don't fight for a spot on the interchange. Being on the interchange is exactly the same as being in the starting side. It's not an 18, it's a 22. We normally play 7 defenders and it doesn't matter which 6 you name in the defensive starting positions and which one is on the interchange. The 7 are all equal. It sounds like any of the Port injured who do make it back are likely to be underprepared. Why would they consider Duursma given he got dropped the previous week and he's suffered at least a minor injury? Aliir, Dixon & Fantasia are obviously all big outs.

  48. I like J Brown's idea of keeping Weid, dropping Tomlinson and putting T Mac back. I rate T Mac as a better defender than Tomlinson, and lets face it, the only good bit of footy T Mac has played all year was the half he played down back in round 1.
