  1. In the aftermath of Round 23 and trying to distract myself from the nerves of the impending finals series, I put together this quiz. At the time, I was thinking, "This will surely be the highlight of the season, what could possibly top this?" (I wasn't allowing myself to think too far ahead). I was also thinking, come the end of the year, if we'd been bundled out of the finals in some devastating fashion, it would be nice to reflect on this great comeback. And I thought people would have good chance at some tricky questions after likely dozens of viewings - of course, some of that may have been erased by hundreds of viewings of another pivotal few minutes since then! So, for your entertainment, a 21-question quiz about the minutia of the last two minutes of Round 23. Test yourself, test you relatives on Christmas. Post your score here! NOTE: Questions refer to the Channel 7 broadcast and widely circulated information post-match. https://www.sporcle.com/games/dees_in_october/round-23-quiz

  2. Couldn't disagree more with this. It was early 2021 when Kate stepped into the role, in the difficult circumstances of Glen Bartlett's surprise departure. At that time the pressure was on the MFC big time as we didn't have any runs on the board. My view is that in being able to handle that transition in the almost seamless way that it appeared to the outside world and provide that off feild stability over the season was an important factor (obviously not that only factor) in our sucess this season. Contrast that somooth leadership handover with the chaos at clubs like Collingwood, Hawthorn and Carlton this season and the correlation to on feild performance as well. It's long been understood that on feild sucess also requires strong and compedent off feild management/leadership. My observations as a realitive outsider is that we have finally got the offeild stuff right. Sure Kate can't take all the credit, but it looks to me that she's a pretty important ingredient. As much as I never overly warmed to him, I personally acknowledge and give credit to a job well done by Glen Bartlett. Glen was rarely in the headlines and his background as a West Coast man, never particularly inspired me, but during his tenure, there was realitive stability, some good off field decision making and appointments and the gracious way which Glen appeared to step down was a testament to that. Quite conversely, one of the things I really like about Kate as a president is the way she wears her passion for the club on her sleave and the more public approach she takes putting the MFC on the map, but not in the OTT totally one eyed way of an Eddie. I think she could just have the right approach for the era we are beginning.

  6. I have a feeling she keeps talking about the billion dollar project she oversaw around the tennis precinct because she can't tell us what is going to happen at our home base under confidentiality restraints. But she is just letting us know she will get the job done. I'm backing her in.

  7. The previous president wanted to oust Goodwin from my reliable sources and it was a non-starter from the board and particularly Roffey. Not many cardboard cutouts can do that.

  8. "I WISH I KNEW WHERE I WANTED TO BE WHEN I WANTED TO BE WHERE I WAS TODAY" Picture this.... temperature around 25 warm , balmy DAY and the Fence enjoying the majesty of the very pleasant surroundings of Casey Fields, does this sound inviting? Well I can tell you it beats the hell outa a weekend in Siberia anyday! But out here you still have to worry about slitherers but they are far more dangerous and bigger entities which have the capacity to be a .. more menacing presence .... which might or might not be related to the sign above! The usual drone of House music emanating from the Boom Box speakers at Casey Fields just blended nicely into the soundscape of what was another "Full On" Blitzkrieg Training session today. The following report was filed for the Demonland Brethren so what are you waiting for...... read on Absentees NO MAJAK No W.A Contingent except for Kossie On modified duties Jayden Hunt Warm ups This is done two ways 1 At the new indoor facility where players go through a thorough graduated stretching and graduated drill sequence 2 Out on the ground where small drills focusing on precise ball movement, quickness of delivery and rapid fire ball drill sequences are related to in tight match simulations One of these was a drill which I now call "Three Blind Mice" Players run backwards, with ball, Pirouette and run forward in a triangualar type sequence zig zag and then deliver the ball slighly off balance. It looks like the type of drill which equates to players being surrounded by opposition and then need to squeeze a correct delivery whilst slightly disorientated and slightly off balance. Skills , Drills and Maneuvers Two groups were maintained with one doing whole ground ball movements from various positions of stoppages both forwards and back and selecting again correct options for longer run and carry type work and also ground switching. The other group then continued in small confines contested ball work and again emphasizing delivery, blocking harrasing and disposal under pressure At the completion of this drill an excellent drill where players were involved in a triangular formation with 3 players moving the ball with precise handball which was punctuated by the gadfly tendancies of two harrasers who provided contest and pressure. This was an excellent drill in which hardly any group made a mistake! Delivery was precise, Handballs were given at the right moment then opening up the play. Following that a full match simulation was conducted under match conditions which again featured some at times breathtaking full ground transferance of the air conveyance! At the conclusion of that another minor activity some run throughs and Goal kicking was maintained and warm down completed a just over 2 hour pretty intensive and hard workout Player watch Several players really stood out for mine and I'll go through them now ADAM TOMLINSON A few on this site have commented on his "Readiness" but after seeing him again today he WILL be ready to go round 1. He marked well, moved well, was assured and showed NO sign of being hampered by his knee reco. He looked bloody good. DEAKYN SMITH Caught my eye on a few occasions with his Charismatic ball skills and skill level, will be one to watch in 2022 BAILEY LAURIE Looked much more assured and confident with some very "Astute" decisions and ball use TOM SPARROW Every time I see this kid I just keep thinking he plays like a turbo charged Ollie Wines, he is a bull who is becoming more confident and imposing. JAMES JORDON Scott Pendlebury Mrk 2 in the making here. JAKE BOWEY How much better can this kid get? Just never ever makes a mistake just cruises along the ground mopping up better than a thirsty Jex in the desert! JOEL SMITH Looks confident in body and took some excellent intercept marks and delivered very well in run and carry sim. N0 27 AND 42 Not sure who they are but boy did they do some excellently crafted runs and deliveries "Lace out" I wondered whether 1 was Luke Dunstan but not sure. OUR STANDOUTS Im putting a few buck on Clayton OLIVER for the 2022 BROWNLOW He just does not stop improving , some of his escapism and brute strength and dazzle from stoppages is almost impossible! Our culture is being driven by Max, Tracc, Stephen May and Jake Lever were irrepressible and Ed Langdon ANB, J.V, BBB, and Big Mac were all eye catching. Fritta snapped a couple of "Freak Goals" and Harmsy and Rivers assured as was Christian Salem IMPROVERS Fraser Rossman shows signs of steady improvement once smothering with full body on a Clarry Kick and Toby Bedford, and Kade Chandler committed very well. FINAL COMMENTS Competition for places is at all seasons high with selection headaches aplenty. Long gone are the days of limited backups and I forecast based on what I've seen little let up from the professional and exacting standards established in 2021

  9. It's reported in today's Age newspaper (possibly paywalled) that there will be a stricter interpretation of head high contact in season 2022. Most significantly, "the potential to cause injury in certain circumstances must be factored into the determination of the impact, rather than “strong consideration” being given to it...The result of this change will be that, where there is careless conduct that is high contact and has the potential to cause injury, a medium impact classification will usually apply, and a one-match suspension will be the minimum sanction applied.” At last it appears that the risk of the incident causing injury will become relevant rather than just the outcome. In other words, if you bump a player and there is a head knock, expect a penalty whether or not the player bumped was injured.

  12. Don't forget to celebrate the anniversary of the Grand Final on the 25th, Demonlanders. Clearly the biggest thing happening that day! Remind any friends and relatives you're catching up with that it's been 3 months since the Dees' triumph. Perhaps a celebratory viewing of the last minute of the third before present unwrapping? A toast to Max Gawn? Break out the premiership cheeseboard?

  13. To support this, Gary Pert made an interesting statement in this article a couple of weeks ago where he touched on the Gosch's paddock upgrade and new facilities - seems there is a design already drawn up: https://www.sen.com.au/news/2021/12/06/melbourne-to-announce-big-profit-in-2022-ceo-provides-update-on-new-training/ “We’ve been training for many, many years basically on a junior football oval, now for us to be on an MCG size oval by the time we start the season next year, that’s our first step. “By the time we get to that point hopefully we’re a lot further down the track with the State Government and the AFL on our broader facility. “I’ve seen the designs, it looks magnificent and that’s progressing and it’ll be worth the wait in the end.”

  14. Not to mention the smug superiority we can indulge in, as these "experts" reveal the paucity of their knowledge about our team, and we can laugh at their predictions no matter what they are, unless they consider us a slam dunk for the flag, in which case maybe they know a thing or two. Season 2021 was great and it's still not over in my mind, but it may be time to start salivating about 2022. GO DEMONS!!

  19. No need to apologise to anyone, esp CF, DeeZone. Your'e spot on IMO. 8 years on the Board means she was involved in all key issues of the re-build, Roos, Pert, Marketing, Goodwin extension, stability and cohesion, financil position after selling gaming venue ....etc. What on earth was easy in 2021?

  20. Thanks very much DiO. Alas I did poorly but enjoyed doing it. Gee that was a ripper of a game despite the umps pinging Gus for insufficient intent which was a howler. I'm so glad that Lever didn't just go the roost which given the clock time many players would have. Cool head is Jake. The look on Hawkins face when Max marked was fantastic. He was so angry. I know score wise there have been bigger comebacks but at Kardinia park and the top spot at stake it will go down as one of our best.

  21. I've posted a few times about the moment on this forum. I loved Frittas 4th over the back of the pack to put us back in it. And Browns mark 10seconds later holding the ball up high like he does and exactly what we got him for. Petraccas all class little runner got the juices flowing. Sparrows off a step I thought I was redlining right then ....... We were coming real hard for this game now. But Olivers ...... Holy 5hit ..... The big guns are takin' it right here .... Right now. I have the image below burnt into my brain like looking through a tunnel with my fist in front of my face just forken roaring. Imagine that sound from 50 thousand of us at the 'G'. Would've been something else.

  30. Just the right word, Fork. I let out a literal primal scream, a sound I'd never made before, piercing, and entirely involuntary (scared my partner - and me a bit!). Funny thing is, I can't be certain it was that goal; I think it was - must have been? - and so I'm with you on your other point: How I'd love to relive that moment and feeling in real time. Perhaps next time(/year?😉) there will be the same moments and we can watch it all more mindfully and come away with better-filled memory banks.

  32. The same principle should apply for every incident. The action should always be the focus of scrutiny not the result to the player on the receiving end. If a similar action is deliberate and or malicious it shouldn't matter if it is against a player who ends up in hospital or getting BOG. It's the same action.

  37. Absolute ignorance. A cardboard cut out could have captained us on Grand Final day as well. It was a collective effort from the President down

  38. In regards to concussion the AFL need to stop rewarding players with frees that get hit high when they choose to lead with their head. Doggies will be in trouble if this ever comes in. Jack McRae free in the GF against Viney - in 3rd Quarter (centre clearance just after the Brown goal) was a prime example of this. McRae was low and just ploughed his head at Vineys knees to draw a free. Unnecessary risk to his head. If no free he would be less likely to do it.

  40. At the start of every season, I always (stupidly) pore over the experts' prognostications with a variety of feelings, mostly dismay that no one thinks we'll be any good and dismay when they pick us to do well because that's a jinx, but with an occasional 'We're better than that!' reaction, knowing deep down that we're not. Not 2022. At the start of next season I'll glance at the experts and have two reactions: outrage, if they don't tip us as outright flag favourites and satisfaction when they do.

  46. Yes, all 4 coaches voted him BOG. "Petracca was the only player on the list to play what the coaches deemed to be a ‘perfect game’ this season, earning 40 out of a possible 40 votes in the Grand Final after a Norm Smith Medal winning performance". 2021-best-and-fairest-all-the-winners I couldn't find GF votes for other players. What we can guess is that Max (3 Finals average of 30 votes) scored very highly in the PF. Oliver was consistent across all three finals and averaged 31 votes. Petracca was in the same range (average for two finals of 31 votes) and excelled in the GF with a 'perfect game'. Not far behind was them Salem them (Finals average of 29) who probably polled highly in the GF.
