  2. “The Demons handed over picks No.22, 79 and a future second-round selection for the 23-year-old, while the Dockers gave up Langdon, pick No.26 and a future fourth-round selection”. So to get Langdon we paid a future second rounder (pick 38 2020 - James Rowe?) and dropped 4 spots from 22 to 26 which got us Rivers (after dropping back a few more spots) In summary we got an out and out bargain

  4. I'm lucky enough that I've had a chance to read the 'Captain's Diary' book they're talking about: it is absolutely brilliant. Any Dees fan will really love the insights that it gives into the entire season, and into Max's personality, and his take on the whole playing and coaching group. There's a lot in there that even us obsessive Demonlanders won't already know. Highly recommended.

  5. Non-premiership-winning coaches to experiment with old fashioned wingers who run up and down the flanks all day. Same coaches to experiment with new fangled ruckmen who are skilled enough to double as athletic ballhandling midfielders in the same contests in which they are beanpoles winning tapouts. Same coaches to try out players on their lists who are too tall to be small forwards and too short and light to be KPF, to find one who is fast on the lead, with good hands overhead and quick reflexes. Lists will be exhaustively turned over trying to find this player.

  7. In 1986 I managed a Sydney-based wine company in Melbourne. One of my clients was the Marquis of Lorne. I was attracted to a woman who worked there. I asked her out, the venue, The Melbourne Concert Hall, the occasion, a Leeuwin Estate sponsored visit by the Staatskapelle Berlin. She agreed, specified she would pay for her own ticket, then she suggested we have dinner afterwards. We went to a Bistro in Bourke Street. I ordered Clos De Tart, 1980. It was $125 on the list. Halfway through the dinner a waitress who had been a friend who she hadn't seen in years walked past. She asked the waitress to sit with us and because it was her last shift there she said why not? She then ordered another glass - one of those huge balloony things which held half a bottle - and she poured the rest of the Clos De Tart for her friend, yes, half the bottle. After I had paid the bill - this was after she had insisted she would pay half - she asked me if I could drop her off at her boyfriend's house. I mention this in light of this great article about our Capitano Max who at the end of festivities after the GF sat with our Angus on the roof of their hotel and drank a decanted bottle of Clos De Tart. Apparently it costs $1500 these days. It's a Monopole, you see, and that ain't a Polish thing...

  9. Is it just me or is anyone else disproportionately excited about next Sunday?! My son told me he’s gonna bring his new girlfriend to meet me sometime before xmas. I says, cool… pretty much any day other than December 5th. Last weekend my sister invited me to her work xmas do. I says, it’s not on December 5th is it? Coz if so, I can’t make it. Then this morning a friend asked me to her husband’s birthday bbq which is on December 5th. I says, I can’t go, remember? I’m going to the Premiership event at the MCG. She says, Really??! Because of that footy thing? 😳 that “footy thing.” Henceforth, she is dead to me. 😁 Soooo excited for it!!!! ❤️💙💕❤️💙

  10. I feel like I have dissociative identity disorder reading this thread. Post about Raj, post about Roos, post about Taj, post about Roos… the last post was about Roos, so I’d better make this one about Taj. Welcome to the Dees, young man. Welcome to the premiers, who are set for a feast over the next few years.

  12. Max said much the same re analysis in his article today in the age. He bemoaned the lack of understanding the media have of the modern game and how he can’t watch afl because of it. I think Goody is different to the intellectually curious coaches and managers you allude to. I may be mistaken. In my view, Goody is more a “manager” type. I don’t see it in Hardwick either. But they both stuck with a sound basic strategy, built lists to execute it, and got the culture right to perform. It’s such a lesson for other clubs that it usually takes time for a list to develop to execute a strategy. What strategy works for list A won’t for list B. Burgo talks about this a lot in soccer on his podcasts where the difference between the physicality of the press strategy requires completely different players to the possession based strategy’s. There are similarities in AFL but not as pronounced. As Goody has the right people around him now it doesn’t matter if he is brilliant or not. His limitations showed when he stuck to some flawed tactics for long periods of time that other coaches could easily exploit, especially when the pressure was on, and he clearly didn’t have the right people around him to point out the issues. The entire thread about whether he was the right guy was after his experimental strategy was ripped apart by Clarko and Hawthorn. Richo was the master of exploiting the holes on Goodys gameplan and was a great addition for us, Yze fixed Goody’s “win contested ball at all cost” stoppage strategy, and Choco in my view likely kept coaches and players on their toes in a way that didn’t seem to happen from 2017-2020 when we always seemed to get ahead of ourselves or not handle expectations. 2021 was all about Goody managing all of these people and the players and making it work. I really don’t think Beveridge should be mentioned in that elite coaching group either. His “genius” to handball out of stoppages and hit form for 4 weeks in September 2016 has resulted in a 5 year leave pass and in him being credited as tactically brilliant whenever the dogs have success, but never criticised for their failures. And some of their failures are all on him, like their lack of midfield defensive running, flawed defensive work at stoppages, a defence that is terrible 1 on 1, and the result being a flawed strategy where they can leak goals (like 16 in 28 minutes of playing time in a GF). His strategy is flawed yet he is credited with being a genius. That makes no sense. The really elite coaches all have been first with a new point of strategic difference, and built unbelievable cultures and lists to execute it and created sustained success for long periods. Roos turned the game on its head tactically and won a flag that no one believed was possible, using systems imported from US basketball that even the AFL CEO didn’t understand. He broke a longer drought than ours, and put in place a bloods culture that still remains. Clarko moneyballed the AFL with elite kicks and got 4 flags from it in 8 years. But it wouldn’t have worked without the culture. Leigh Matthews was different in that it was more about culture and psychology. But he’s a 4 times premiership coach, and if you listen to him on dynasties it is no less impressive than what clarko did. Goody will be seen alongside these revered coaches if the culture and success is sustained. Worsfold built the Eagles from a rabble in 2000 and 2001 to a flag in 5 years, but their culture sucked and he didn’t get what he could of out of that list. I don’t think we will be a one hit wonder but only time will tell. If we only have 1 flag to show by 2025 Goody will always be respected for 2021 but seen more like a Worsfold or Chris Scott than Matthews or Clarko. I’d prefer he is a future AFL Hall of Fame legend alongside Norm Smith.

I did it a bit differently – why can’t you? You’re a different sort of guy. You’re your own man,” encouraged the former champion, in his purring Irish brogue. “You do it your way, son.”

  22. In the timeless classic movie 'Kung Fu Panda', Po the panda is training to be the Kung Fu Dragon Master. His final challenge is to earn the right to read the "Dragon Scroll" which will give him the final knowledge he needs to reach his goal. When he finally does so and opens the scroll it has no secret formula written on it but only shows his reflection. It confuses him for awhile until it dawns on him that he is already the Dragon Master and only needs to believe so. Well this years finals series and Premiership was our Dragon Scroll and I believe as good as this season was we're gonna go to another level again. The players now know they are the "Dragon Masters" and from now on they'll play with a freedom and confidence that knowledge brings. Reckon we're gonna be scary good and rip the competition apart at will.

  23. I watched a lot of Casey this year and this couldn't be more more further to your statement I'm still bemused at people like yourself who are so quick to write off kids straight away after their first year in the system. Not only was Rosman's development this year stifled by Covid but he like many other kids in their first year barely had any continuity. James Jordon is a perfect example why you don't just write off first year players. JJ show much in his first year in the VFL and some were quick to question his worth as a future AFL player. He proved many wrong this year and matched it with the best midfielders in the game. Rosman played exactly how I expect a raw tall athletic player would after missing a whole year of footy due to Covid. He played the first 6 games this year with Casey and he grew confident with each game and was starting to hit some find. After round 6 the season was put on hold until they resumed back again at round 11. He played only 3 games after before it was called off again. How on earth can a kid gain any momentum or form through that? it was a unfair on many young kids starting out in the AFL. Though, i am not surprised that you're once again finding ways to be extremely negative towards the club and how they're handling the list. This is you to the Tee. Here I was thinking a premiership would give many people on here clarification that the club has pretty much gotten it right on field and off.

  25. LATEST POSITION FOR CONTRACT RENEWALS UP TO Novemeber 8 Updated for one year contracts for Hibberd and Melksham ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The Original post of this thread on Nov 26, 2021 was: The list for our next Premiership 🎏🏆 tilt is: At the excellent suggestion by @La Dee-vina ComediaI have identified the Premiership 🎏🏆players. Draftees added are: van Rooyen, Howes, Woewodin as Senior List players and Moniz- Wakefield as a B Rookie. This gives us one list spot for a senior player if we were take a Delisted FA or and A Rookie in the SSP draft or the mid-year draft. Note that Jordon is now officially a senior player. Milestone games in the 2022 H & A season could be: 200: Melksham, T. McDonald 150: B. Brown, Salem 100: Hunt In terms of 2022 contract renewals: Most of the 2022 OOC's will sort themselves out. However, Brayshaw and Hunt will both be Restricted Free Agents (See edit below). I can't imagine that either will want to leave and we would get comp draft picks if they did. Of interest is the length of Brayshaw's contract given that his contemporaries have long terms. Jackson is said to be in contract discussions. And of course, we would all love it if Oliver's contract is extended next year rather than wait with much angst to his RFA year of 2023. Can't see him wanting to leave. I love all our players and don't like to think of departures. Nonetheless, next years list management could be challenging as those OOC in 2022 are either Premiership 🎏🏆 players or have yet to play a game. The exceptions are: Baker, Bedford and Smith. Hibberd may be a retirement depending on how the youngsters shape up. Overall, it is a very stable list for the next few years and is a list that can go back to back. Edit: @old55has advised that Hunt and Weideman will be 'Unrestricted Free Agents' so have reflected that in the table with 'FA'. With Brayshaw it is a bit harder to tell whether he will be an RFA or a UFA. The difference being that with the former if there is an offer to him we can match it. With the latter it means we can't. Late Edit: Judd Mc Vee added to the A Rookie list. The only list spot we have left is one B Rookie. The 2021 Contracts thread can be found here:

  26. With the drafts done and dusted for the time being, the SEN commentators have turned their attention to the season ahead with 10 WAY-TOO-EARLY PREDICTIONS FOR THE 2022 AFL SEASON These are their top ten predictions:- • COVID will have a tangible impact on 2022 results • An unpredictable year on and off the field • The Tiger train to rumble back into the top four • Emerging Saint to announce himself as a star of the competition (Max King) • West Coast to accept their fate and commit to a rebuild • If you thought Collingwood had hit rock bottom … • The Blues will make the top eight • Two key Bombers will reinvent themselves in other positions (new roles for McGrath and Shiel?) • We'll see more variation in how teams play • Former Brownlow Medallists to reassert themselves as league’s best (Dangerfield and Fyfe) What are your predictions?

  27. One quick scan of AFL Tables later, and I can confirm that Howes will be the first Blake to join the red and blue. Oddly, we've also never had a Jacob on our list before. Closest I could find is Graeme Jacobs who played in our '64 premiership side.

One ended up drafting based on "needs" he was filthy as he wanted him but got overruled. Said he was a beauty and would've gone higher if he played more this year.

  35. At the time. we were so terrible on the field and so disrespected off the field, it felt like the last roll of the dice for club. We were going down the plughole. Who can forget our pathetic struggles for sponsors, for instance? Roos and Jackson pulled us out of the vortex. If not for their efforts, we would now be half heartedly cheering on the Gold Coast Demons ("MFC" proudly on the back of the jumper) or huddling in small groups at Casey v Sandringham games recalling the glory of 1964.

  36. I’m really grateful for this thread and to all of those who took part in what was sometimes a robust discussion on the next batch of recruits. On re-reading the thread from the beginning, I’m actually feeling very chirpy about the outcome of the draft and the selections made by Jason Taylor and his team. From very early on I gained an appreciation of the Jacob Van Rooyen and his recruitment - especially with posters like WJ and Chelly pumping his tyres. The debate about the qualities of Mac Andrew was fascinating and not disrespectful to the player but more so about the way some of the “experts” were bending the truth to push their agenda. After my lengthy re-read I really don’t mind that he’s been taken elsewhere. It is what it is and he certainly wasn’t “trashed” as one poster has claimed in an unwarranted attack on WJ. It’s worth going to the interesting discussion above between Dazzle and him on and around 1 September where WJ expressed his preference of Van Rooyen over Andrew. We also heard in the thread about Melbourne’s interest in Blake Howes. It’s amazing how this thread virtually zeroed in on our choices in this draft. Thanks and well done to all who contributed.

  37. Got to be happy with draft picks we picked up. VAN ROOYEN: Great get considering he can play key forward and back. A lot like Petty but as Taylor has already said he will spend more time up forward. HOWES: Was suppose to go in the top 20. To get him at 39 was a great get. Would love it if he was half as good as Gunstan who is a quality forward when fit, but he gonna spend more time in the midfield a string to his bow that Gunstan hasn't got. WOEWODIN: Good father son pick up. If he can be half as good as his old man we will have a pretty good footballer on our hands. MCVEE: Is the running half back I was crying out for. All Australian under 16 if he can find that form again we will have a good player on our hands. MONIZ-WAKEFIELD: Another small forward mid who will keep the likes of Neal-Bullen, Spargo, Pickett, Bedford and Chandler honest. Love JT what a recruiter he has been since crossing over from Collingwood, may his good judgement continue.

  38. Roos succeeded Nield at a time of crisis overseen by the AFL with the management under Jackson. What Roos did was to create a stable professional environment so that the club could be rebuilt and was a more attractive and professional set up to attract quality players. In that process Jackson and Roos oversaw the appointed of Goody as a designated successor in a two year timeframe but with a much stronger list. This also allowed Goody time to set his own environment and to attract his own coaching/management team. The recent premiership would not have been possible without that process under Roos/Jackson, although the vision and professional set up we now have is clearly Goody’s, with a strong recent contribution from Gary Pert.l. Am not disputing Gioody is primarily responsible for winning the flag, but initial insightful and visionary management certainly helped.

  44. Congrats Andy and all the other 4 draftees. All look to have exciting skills offering different ones to add to our required hardness determination and team ethics. Terrific base for our Coaches to develop. Tall swing man defender and stylish goal kicker Leader on the field and some possible 2022 games on the radar for this key position recruit. All round skilled outside high marking and long kicking centreman forward and wing prospect at 190cm. Exciting !! Could do anything in 2022. Son of a gun who has dreamed of this day joins with a stellar WA Colts and local games 2021. Excels on both sides of his body and is a leader. Judd is a medium/small defender with high skills and run off the backline mantra. Will develop nicely his game style under our elite coaching Andy is one of our NGA boys who also possesses a high skill level and outside run. Like all recruits he will relish our culture and is an East Freo Shark like Dogga Rivand Taj and will develop ahead in leaps and bounds as a mid and forward ball getter. Exciting times ahead.

  45. I'm not completely writing off Rosman but he was undeniably a risk-reward gamble and I'm comfortable to say he remains as that level of a gamble. I'm completely fine with the strategy of using a pick every now and then on a potential freak, but I still think it's long odds to pay off. Hunt did nothing for 2 years and whilst it's been bumpy since has paid off. I think Rosman's around that mark. JJ was underwhelming in year 1 too, so, sure I get your point. He was a December birthday with a lot of work to do physically. Rosman walked in as the best runner on the list and with some strenght. The premiership has made a lot of people on here act like the club can't do any wrong and are completely infallible. Any hint of criticism gets jumped on at a rate of knots. I think I've been more loyal to Goodwin than the vast majority on here. I think Jason Taylor is a freak, but I don't think pointing out that whilst he's clearly in the best tier in the business he's still human. That doesn't mean I wouldn't worship the ground he walks on. And my original point for where this Rosman discussion stemmed was that Jason Taylor has been like Bradman at recruiting but the wing has been a bit of a bodyline for him. Howes is a serious talent and a fairly decent pick in a deep enough draft and with JT's record I expect him to pay off where other moves at finding wingers have yet to pan out. If JT can keep his perfect 2nd round draft record going and fill a need with a versatile winger than he'll only go higher up as a phenomenal recruiter and the team will only be stronger.

  46. Rosman looks the goods to me. Saying we paid top dollar for Langdon is ridiculous. We paid top dollar for May and Lever too. All 3 premiership players seem pretty cheap now. You can afford to do that when you recruit brilliantly in other positions and need to fill a deficiency.
