  1. Positional names have changed over the years. Back when I first started playing and following footy in the 60s, these were the names used: B: Former rover who has lost a yard in pace Loneliest man in the world Rock of Gibraltar H/B: Enforcer Key Defender Jack of all trades C: Real goer Pivot Racehorse H/F: Avenue to goal The hardest position Will o' the wisp F: Resting ruckman Spearhead Goalsneak R: One kick behind the play Prime mover Borer into the bottom of the pack 19th: Utility 20th: Big-hearted trier In addition, you had those that didn't make the side but were knocking on the door of selection and were running around in the seconds. Among these were exciting young prospects, natural left-footers, honest battlers, bean-poles, big occasion players, nippy small blokes and club stalwarts. Then, by the 1980s, the game and the terminology had changed to read like this: B: Tagger Stopper Sweeper H/B: Rebounder Negator Springboard C: Breakaway Instigator Linkman H/F: Runner Tall option Receiver F: Crumber Converter Finisher R: Tall On-baller Small I/C: Overlapper Tag breaker The backs and half-backs were collectively called "the back half" while the six forwards made up "the forward half". The centre line players were in "the middle" and its intersection with the "central corridor" (previously the goal-to-goal line) constituted "the workface". These days, I have to admit to having no idea. Nor, I suspect, does anybody else.

  2. George Floyd comparisons shouldn't be made and if they are, they before a misunderstanding of the George Floyd situation. A policeman used his position of power as a way to injur, humiate and eventually kill a human for whom he had a duty of care. In addition, the particular police civilian relationship is fraught with racism and other issues related to social inequality. George Floyd was pinned for nearly 9 minutes in a clear abuse of power, and it cost him his life. Jack Viney stuffed up. It presented a risk of injury, sure. It looks terrible. I am ok with that act being banned and a suspension resulting. But he was effectively wrestling with someone who pulled him in, and applied pressure for 5 seconds in the heat of that 2-sided confrontation before moving on. There was no power distance, no imbalance, no indifference [censored] to race or social status. The only time the incidents should be compared is to point out they are not related.

  3. These days it’s all about how you ‘self identify’. In a work setting I identify as a ‘mercurial forward’ (which is code for I don’t do the hard stuff, and just hope the ball bounces out the back for me to kick easy goals). This would explain why I’m on Demonland at 1pm on a Thursday.

  4. It was a sickening hit. Sounded awful when that boot hit and I just remembered gasping and hoping Jeff was ok. I’ll always hate Bomber Thompson for joking about it in his press conference after the match. Something along the lines of head shouldn’t have been there, he head butted Kings foot etc. [censored] waste of skin that bloke. He’s probably face down in a ditch now after his ice addiction.

  5. I get that, and if everything is equal I want nothing more than to see the boys at the last day in September at the G, but this is a unique beast and be it Optus, Adelaide Oval wherever I want to see the showpiece game in front of a full house and the players able to share the moment with supporters and go through all the emotions that past Premiership players have doing a lap of honour in front of a crowd

  6. Oh come on Nasher, it was hardly laughable to question whether he had a good game last week. Just because you disagree doesn't make it a ridiculous suggestion.

  9. Yep. Reduces risk of death, and even hospitalisation to something like the level of the common cold. If, and it’s an almighty ‘if’, given the level of selfish ignorance out there as fertilised by Sky News (thank you YouTube), we get to 80% vaccination and open up completely, the virus will duly run through us all, like the cold. Most of us won’t know we’ve got it or get symptoms, but we will be infectious (to varying levels). Those unvaccinated will remain of course as ‘at risk’ as they are now - fit young people can and do die from COVID. Future boosters will be mandatory (the talk is currently 6 monthly). As the months and years tick by, both treatment methods and vaccine efficacy will improve (though the virus evolve, so this remains a challenge, like flu vaccines), but the world from now until ever will simply ‘live with the virus’. It’s important for people to realise its NEVER going to go away, just like the flu, the current version of which is of course a generational relation to the ‘Spanish Flu’. I would’ve hoped a responsible, apolitical government during a crisis would start informing its people of these truths, at least to create vaccine compliance and understanding. Oh well…..

  10. Love this bit As of right now, we are witnessing something special from Clayton Oliver, and anyone who criticises what he doesn’t do, or what he could do, should take a bit of gander at what he does do.

  11. Just to be clear for anyone reading this, despite many people thinking it is the case, the vaccine does not in any way stop you getting infected. It isn't a physical barrier that prevents the virus from getting into your body (like a mask or physical distance). What the vaccine does is prepares our bodies immune system so that we can effectively fight it off, once infected. So for many vaccinated people, when exposed to the virus, their immune system will fight it off super quickly and they might not test positive or show symptoms. In other people the virus will take hold a bit more and they'll test positive but only have mild to no symptoms. In all these vaccinated people because the infection is fought off faster and easier, they have less viral load and are less contagious.

  13. The Age has written: Patrick Dangerfield said Viney’s suspension was “probably about right” but admitted it reflected poorly on the game. “I’m sure Jack would admit this – it’s not something we want to see in our game. It’s certainly something that we want to stamp out,” Dangerfield said on SEN. “It’s an ugly look, there’s no doubt about it. Jack plays on the edge, he’s an aggressive player, but I also believe him to be a fair player as well. I don’t think we should hang him out to dry. “He’s copped his whack, he’ll no doubt be disappointed and we all move on and learn from it as a code and individually, and we get better from it.” I dislike Danger intensely but I don't have much of a problem with his comments in this instance. Jack did say at the Tribunal that it wasn't a good look for the game so no problem with that part of Dangers' comment. Yes, he said 2 weeks was about right and we would all disagree. But, I like what seems to be genuine praise for Jack, which I have bolded. Hopefully, that quietens the idiots saying it should be 3 or 4 weeks.

  14. Taj getting a good mention on AFL.com DEMONS FATHER-SON PROSPECT EMERGES MELBOURNE father-son talent Taj Woewodin has emerged to firm as a draftee for this year. Woewodin, the son of 2000 Brownlow medallist Shane, is eligible to join the Demons as a father-son selection at the end of this year. Shane played 138 games for the Demons between 1997-2002 before playing three seasons with Collingwood. Taj, 18, is a versatile midfielder who has pushed himself into the West Australian under-19s program after a consistent season with East Fremantle. He's going really well for a player who was probably sitting outside of our calculations early in the year. He's showed some terrific improvement over the last month and is a really strong character who is dedicated, professional and works hard," said WA talent manager Adam Jones. "He's very clean with his ball handling and he’s shown real competitiveness over our trial games. He's also been able to play multiple positions – wing, half-forward, half-back and he’s had an impact in each position. "Taj has really good skills by foot and he has a good all-round game." After averaging 22 disposals at colts level this season, Woewodin has been a solid player in Western Australia’s recent under-19 trial games ahead of the national carnival. The Demons have first access to Woewodin, who is open to moving states to follow his football pathway. Melbourne’s last father-son selection was Billy Stretch in 2014. – Callum Twomey

  15. Loved the article IHW! Thanks for posting. Brings memories flooding back for this old fart, including reference the old Argus newspaper! The final quote from Norm in the article struck a particular chord with me: "But all in all, and looking down the list of Melbourne players, I think I can promise football lovers, that Melbourne will make every team fight hard if they want to down us". To me that quote rings true with today's team, and the 'DNA' that Goodie keeps referring to. But the similarities don't stop there, as the following extract from 'The Grand Old Flag' Lynda Carroll's outstanding history of the MFC shows: "The first ten rounds of 1955 were enthralling, ones for Melbourne. StKilda, Geelong, Footscray, North Melbourne, Essendon, Hawthorn, South Melbourne, Carlton, Richmond and Fitzroy all capitulated to the Demons. This run of consecutive wins established a new club record. There were always replacements on hand for anyone who was injured, and the challenge from young players kept senior members of the side on their toes. Unfortunately, the first defeat of 1955 came at the hands of the old enemy - Collingwood. ........ in Round 11. Melbourne's innaccurate kicking for goal during the season finally cost the team a match. ............. The same price would be paid again over the next month, with narrow losses to both Geelong and Footscray being directly attributable to the inability of the forwards to convert their opportunities fully. ............................................................................ Despite the problems of inaccuracy Melbourne was on top of the ladder, racing towards the top of the tree in 1955. I won't indulge myself any further here, but suffice to say, to this point in the season, there are some notable similarities between 1955 and 2021. If I may l add one further point however. In the second quarter of the 1955 GF, the Dees kicked 1.7. to keep Collingwood in the game. At 3/4 time the margin was just 7 points. However, in the end Dees superior fitness saw them run out winners by 28 points. Just something to ponder for chronic sufferers of MFCSS. Lets hope that we can all revel in the glory of #13 in September 2021, to complete the circle, and commit Norm's 'curse' to history,

  22. Meanwhile West Coast has made a big statement by dropping Xavier O'Neill and putting Waterman, Hutchings, Rotham and West on their extended bench... But seriously, if Vardy plays (and I think there's a fair chance he will, to provide ruck support for Naitanui who will blow up after 15 minutes of trying to follow Gawn and Jackson around the ground), I hope we're into him from the first bounce. For whatever reason I cannot and won't forget him mocking Gawn after Ryan took mark of the year on his head in 2019. Also means no Barrass, Ryan or Shuey for West Coast this week.

  23. I have to admit another lock down is not easy to contemplate as I watch the 5pm news. It is not as hard for me as numerous others but it must be tough for some. It must be hard for the young to see what the future holds for all those trying to make their way in the world. Lots of things that I have been able take for granted are now severely restricted to them.

  24. I see Tom Green at GWS has done his hamstring and is out for 2-4 weeks. Luke Jackson picked a nice time to kick 4 goals last week and gets a big chance to enhance his reputation in his home state this week. Dogga for Rising Star!

  25. So am I. This lockdown's going to hurt the most as it will be probably be the straw that broke the camel's back in terms of ruling out the grand final and possibly all finals. I know I should be grateful if we win a flag this year but watching it in lockdown with a 500 metre travel radius imposed on all Victorians and a 6:30pm curfew sounds like the pits if you ask me.

  26. The GF is an eternity away in Covid world. Delta can't be contained for too long so i'll be happy just to get the game played at all. If the Dees do manage to win it i'm sure we'll enjoy it just the same even if we can't attend. And get vaccinated people. It's our only pathway out this limbo.

  27. The only positive I take out of this is that it gives Viney a break to freshen up before finals especially with his lingering foot problems. Will be cherry ripe and hungry for finals.

  28. Agree there was nothing malice in his comment nor was he having a crack at Viney. Dangerfield is always the first to support players in the industrie, especially in his current role as AFLPA. I do honestly believe in hindsight if Viney had his time again, he wouldn't do it. It was silly no doubt, but you're never going to reprogram someone who's played right on the edge all his life. Just has to learn from it and move on now.

  29. Without going too hard, I would say one of Harmes' greatest issues is that he is a bit wrapped up in himself. He's not a match winner, so he's a role player. If he doesn't want to play a role, he has no place

  30. I didn't claim the vaccine stops someone getting infected nor did I imply such. I said: "A reminder that no-one is 'safe'. And no vaccine is fool proof. Not that anyone claims they are... it encourages people to go and get any approved vaccine. It is the only protection there is. So I'm not sure why you have taken issue/quoted my post. Perhaps you assumed that by 'protection' I meant 'prevention'. In the context of 'no vaccine is fool proof' I'm not sure that would be a valid assumption, if that is what your post was about. There is a lot of terminology thrown around and used somewhat interchangeably by some spokespeople and the media when talking about vaccine benefit which is usually expressed as a %: % efficacy, % effectiveness, % prevention, % protection. I'm not going into the definitions nor the semantics. All I know is it is best to be vaccinated and that is what my post was about. I recognise that when fully vaccinated I can still get infected, become ill and pass it on. However if (in your words) I 'might not test positive or show symptoms', then I am ecstatic as it will be like never having got it. I may not be that lucky but at least the vaccine improves my chances in that regard. Whether that state is described as vaccine 'efficacy', 'effectiveness', 'protection', 'prevention' or something else I'll leave it to you and others to debate.

  34. I remember that when it happened there was an odd hush on the MCG at the time, the sound of it was absolutely awful. I could not believe King got off scott free, it was reckless, stupid, and clearly dangerous. Meanwhile Brent Moloney got 2 weeks in the same year for “potential impact” on Bartel but didn’t actually touch him.

  36. Sorry I don't think thugs like Dangerfield should be commenting on this matter. It seems to me that the Sporting Press, such as it is, tries to whitewash its favorite thugs so that they can be elevated to "idyllic sportsmen" after retirement. As they can no longer portray them as loveable rogues, like Jack Dyer, if they can ignore the continual thuggery that marked their playing days and call for their expert comments, usually with a touch of outrage, when the next generation tries to maim someone on field in the future.

  37. They gave them away for free https://www.sen.com.au/news/2021/04/22/carltons-long-term-strategy-behind-bold-membership-ploy/ Every Carlton member who left money with the club in 2020 was given the opportunity to provide a general admission membership in 2021 for free to give to another Blues fan, as long as that member also renewed in 2021.

  38. I didn't take any issue with your post LH, nor did I criticise what you had said. I just (quoted your post and) added extra context for anyone who may misinterpret you and accidentally reinforce their existing misunderstanding that "the vaccine is meant to prevent infection but because some people still get infected it clearly isn't effective". I also share your concern about the numbers and stats being thrown around in the media. These often have very specific academic or clinical definitions but are being misinterpreted in lay terms.

  39. The media reporting and punditry of the incident ensured he would be suspended. Normally if a big name name player is reported, the facts are stated dryly, emotion is checked, seeds of doubt are planted and presumption of innocence are aired. In Viney’s case the immediate reporting was of outrage, high emotion, George Floyd comparisons and inference of unimpeachable guilt mostly because it looked bad even though nothing of consequence really happened. The AFL duly sensed the vibes and basically ensured the outcome would be a suspension never mind lack of convincing evidence and making a mockery of presumption of innocence. A classic Kangaroo Court and Viney never had much hope to make his case. In the end the AFL didn’t want to be the target of the following media wrath if they cleared him. The club were also ready to let the issue rest because they don’t the need a drawn out distraction at this stage of the season.

  42. All I’ve heard at this stage is that Barrass from WCE to Sydney Swans will get done on compassionate grounds, and I find it very hard to believe, however, I’m hearing that Harmes is not happy with his “role” at the Dees and will entertain trade talks at end of year.

  43. For me I reckon bring Jones in for Viney. Tell the old timer this is his chance to get his way back into the team leading into finals. 2 weeks to prove he’s not done with.

  44. I love Jack but this deserves two weeks. It wasn't a reflex action that took place around the ball. It was a considered decision to place his elbow on the throat (or jaw) of the opponent. I understand and agree with the arguments around precedents but this type of thing has to be removed from the game - as much as it pains me to say it, this needs to be the new precedent. You take your medicine and move on.
