  1. The ancestors of some current Demonlanders were probably even then clogging up Jim Cardwell’s in-tray with letters asking “Is Norm Smith the right guy?”

  2. Found this summary of our 1955 Premiership team by Norm Smith on the eve of the 1956 season an interesting parallel to the team we have today. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/71795593

  3. Viney got suspended for the optics, not the outcome, nor the intent. That’s whats important for the AFL.

  4. They are cooked. Good teams smack them - average make them seem a threat - crap teams are their points. Loathe the supporters, I will be going nuts and most likely drunk with a fair chance of a sickie Tuesday. Dee’s by 37 points.

  6. Love this bit As of right now, we are witnessing something special from Clayton Oliver, and anyone who criticises what he doesn’t do, or what he could do, should take a bit of gander at what he does do.

  7. Not being social media savvy, i had no idea what tl;dr stood for. So googled it. This was the second definition listed: Generally speaking, you should only use TLDR when summarizing a piece of text, whether you're the author or commenter. Using the phrase TLDR without offering a useful summary for the content can come off as intentionally rude (but of course, that may be your intention).2 Aug 2019 You learn something new every day. But I'm confused. Should you have not asked TL:DL of key points? As in: too long, did not listen. In any case here is a summary of the key points: FIITWOMMDYAFAHAL As in: fantastic interview - in the immortal words of of Molly Meldrum, do yourself a favour and have a listen.

  12. Following Viney's 2 game suspension (and arguable drop of form) - it would seem as though we have a hole in our midfield for a third on-baller. Why haven't we given Gus a go back on the ball in the position he dominated in 2018? He has past the worst of his concussion and James Jordon has played very well as that defensive wingman in the past. Is there something I'm missing? Everyone remembers Gus' game against Adelaide where he racked up 37 possessions and 3 goals - wouldn't be the worst tactical change come finals time. Looking at what his brother is doing over at Freo, we all know Gus can match it and go one better! It also allows Tracca to spend more time as that dangerous Dusty-type player up forward as Oliver's midfield workload would be shared with Gus.

  14. Just to be clear for anyone reading this, despite many people thinking it is the case, the vaccine does not in any way stop you getting infected. It isn't a physical barrier that prevents the virus from getting into your body (like a mask or physical distance). What the vaccine does is prepares our bodies immune system so that we can effectively fight it off, once infected. So for many vaccinated people, when exposed to the virus, their immune system will fight it off super quickly and they might not test positive or show symptoms. In other people the virus will take hold a bit more and they'll test positive but only have mild to no symptoms. In all these vaccinated people because the infection is fought off faster and easier, they have less viral load and are less contagious.

  16. There you have it. A concise summary. As I said in an earlier post, the AFL has adopted a result/injury based penalty system, except where there is no injury, medical treatment, or even leaving the ground, if it looks bad. Then make it up on the fly.

  17. I'm totally with you on this 'mono'...why would we spend money on what is essentially a sub standard oval. Not the way to start a state of the art facility...we are so far behind it's just not funny. Step one of the plan needs to be an MCG size oval (not a kinda MCG hybrid) then we work out from there. If we can't get it at Goschs then forget it. edit: everyone is so wanting a base that they're willing to accept 2nd best and think it's the greatest thing since...

  18. The Herald Sun is describing the hearing as 'farcical'. "Jack Viney’s tribunal case descended into farce on Tuesday night as the Melbourne ball winner pleaded guilty to serious misconduct without knowing the full wording of his charge and then asked to cancel that plea at the end of the hearing. "Viney pleaded guilty to serious misconduct – but not guilty to the particulars of the charge. In bizarre scenes, tribunal chairman David Jones stood down the hearing as the phone hook-up went off line in the wake of the Demons claiming they had never seen the wording of the charge as they attempted to renege the guilty plea. I'd be interested to hear from @Redlegand other legal eagles on here whether the club might be able to challenge on procedural grounds.

  25. I assume we'll be wearing skirts in Perth on Monday in recognition of the fact the game the game has officially turned into netball? Although according to some here Viney almost committed homicide against Collins so I guess he's lucky to get off with anything less than a life ban.

  27. Exactly right. He is averaging 5 + intercepts a game, which by a quick glance is one of the highest by a non defender in the league. He's incredibly important in our game plan to slow up the opposition rebounds reading the play so well, cutting off passes and defensive spread. Our system really matters to Goodwin and he's been one of the key aspects of success of our system this year. Id be a little surprised if Goodwin suddenly went with this route now when it doesn't appear the system is broken.

  28. Two questions are begging: Did anyone on the demons side ask to see the wording before the hearing? Why didn't Anderson clarify Gleeson's wording at the beginning of the hearing, when Gleason described the charge? Or at least point out to the Chairman that the demons had a different understanding of the wording before Jack put in a guilty plea. The wording confusion would explain some odd comments attributed to Gleeson of Jack's testimony that imv, did not work in Jack's favour.

  29. Gus has been really important on the wing this season. It is a hard position to play that involves a lot of defensive spread and and pressure acts that can go unnoticed (although not by the coaches). And he has had to work hard to learn how to play the role so well. Defensively has improved out of sight. He gets involved in a lot of contests, and importantly many of them in the the back half. Interestingly he is averaging 7.2 contested possession a game this season, which is only marginally less than his career average of 8. By way of comparison Salem averages 5.5 contested possession a game this season. And I reckon his marking is increasingly important in stopping teams transition. The other thing is that Gus is not not in Tracc's league as a mid. Few are. Apart from his brilliance, tracc is possibly the strongest mid in the AFL and the best and getting a possession off when being tackled and fighting his way through tackles. He is worth two mids. This is key to our set up of allowing the opposition an extra at the contest and having our extra behind the ball. We would lose too may clearances if tracc played less time as a mid and more time up forward. And so would struggle to implement our preferred set up. Which in turn would impact on our ability to win intercepts in the back half.

  30. He makes us too slow on transition. There’s a lot of footage over 2019-20 with Brayshaw in the midfield where he can’t go with his opponent. It’s one of the reasons he’s playing defensive wing. He’s responsible for 2/3rds of his side of the ground, and doing such a good job. I love what he’s done this year. It’s working really well and doesn’t need to change. We need more spark, burst and versatility in the middle if anything. More bursts of Kozzie and Jordan.

  32. Finals is a different brand of footy. No one wants to be too predictable. I reckon we could do worse than having Gus in the guts as a finals wildcard with Tracca as a goalsquare forward. I can't think of a better on-ball combo than Oliver-Gus-Harmes with CP5 forward (given Jordon plays that wing role so well). Just my opinion of course.

  33. And Henderson, Atkins and O'Connor too, I think. I agree they're the best side in it, but I also don't think they're so far off us that we're no chance in Round 23 or in the finals.

  35. Person should be innocent until PROVEN guilty. If the evidence is inconclusive, what can he actually be guilty of? This is a joke. If we penalised things because they look bad, then Franklin’s elbow? Hawkins elbow on May? Selwood raking the face? Essendon Players haircuts? I think an appeal is in order. They did not prove their case. The jury rolled to tv commentator pressure.

  36. Observations. Media storm, tail wagging dog as others have said Comparatively this appears unfair compared to what league darlings get (citations in previous posts) 2 weeks seems fair Bottom line: Viney should never have put himself and his club in the position where we're all discussing this. A good lesson. Was it just me, or did Jack look a bit angry/sour during the game... I admit I wasn't paying full attention as my son and I were playing Lego as we both routinely looked up, looked at each other and said "another goal" (which it must be said is an underappreciated delight as a long-suffering fan)

  37. thanks for this. A great interview. Pert is definitely growing on me. He feels less corporate and more football than i first thought and seems to love the club. Bit of a worry re the 8 mill loss over 2 seasons though. Guess it’s true fr all clubs.

  38. Can you show me where I’ve advocated that he should come to us? My position is that he is being overhyped in some quarters based on the amount of games he’s played this season and on what he’s achieved. That’s not his fault because we’ve gone through two lockdowns and he also missed a few weeks through concussion. I doubt whether any draft prospect who has reached top 10 in these sorts of draft discussions has done so little to get there. At this stage I don’t think he’s shown enough to warrant such high ranking. If Melbourne had pick 6 in this year’s draft, would you invest it on Mac Andrew?

  40. Ok I’ll cop the 2 weeks and be as angry as everyone else about the inconsistency we’ve seen during the season. What really gets up my frock are the media frothing uncontrollably about how bad the incident was. How the self righteous parade of Wheatley, Dunstall, Cornes and that insignificant tool who’s name I can’t remember comparing this to George Floyd. Oh my god, spare me. The baying for blood and geeing up the AFL to act is much worse than what Viney did. These dills once again trying to be relevant, get a result they want and the club standing back with pants down and lube in hand. This is what has made me mad. ?

  44. I think Geelong are rightful favourites for the flag. They would have won last year but for Dusty and I think they are improved this year with Cameron, Smith and Higgins. They value contested football which wins big finals and they have vast finals experience. They have a nice run of 3 games at Kardinia Park into the finals, but I think this is also a bit of an Achilles' Heel because football is different there from at the MCG and so I expect them to campaign extremely hard for a final down there. I think the Dogs are rightful 2nd favourites simply off the back of their unparalleled midfield depth of class - I can't recall a team that bats deeper. They also have the current best player and a match winner in Bont. This week is likely crunchtime for us in Perth. Win there and we can win the flag this year, lose and it will be all uphill. The Eagles will be stung and I think they historically don't rate us so will come out confident of redemption. I fancy the Swans are the other team with credentials. I just can't see Port winning 2 big finals away from Adelaide.

  45. I hope they appeal this, absolute garbage players throwing sharp elbows and escaping penalty. You have that [censored] thug Hawkins give May one of the blackest eyes ever seen and Franklin doing whatever he wants and recieving [censored] all. If it was a Geelong, Sydney or Western Bulldogs player it would have been classified as insufficient evidence and force and thrown out, without a shadow of a doubt. Another great day for the AFL. Absolutely furious.???????

  46. I remember the Bont eye gouge by Toby Greene. Bont lying pinned on the ground, Toby runs in, looks to see the umpires can’t see and then eye gouges Bont. A disgusting and dangerous act. Penalty a fine. Buddy, Shuey, Daniher and Astbury deliberately elbow players this year and are fined. Nothing to see here. PS. There was a suggestion JV was sore and maybe a couple of weeks freshens him.
