  1. You know you're having a bad season when a draw increases your percentage by 3%.

  3. I agree with that. The club is in turmoil and landing a big fish Coach, who declared he wanted stability, could stop the Board challenges and pacify the members. I posted that Clarkson has to be the primary target and he said what you would expect him to say. However, Mitchell is there wanting the senior job, with the Hawks desperate to keep him and Clarkson has one year left and a President who would happily let him go and then install Mitchell in the job. Why would Buckley go mid year, unless they were worried they would miss their target, if they waited? That to me excludes Yze and any other untried Coach. Remember the other team who they hate across town, who may also be looking for a senior coach. If the word was out that the Blues were sounding Clarkson out, the Pies would be desperate to beat them to the punch. A similar scenario would exist if Clarkson was unavailable and then Lyon becomes the hot property. I think if the Pies were looking at an untried coach, Buckley would have stayed until the end of the season, as there would be no urgency. We will know soon enough.

  6. Breaking News: Collingwood has announced the new coach to replace Nathan Buckley. Former player and club legend Laurie Holden will take the reins with immediate effect. The club wishes him well. (Item from Facebook - at this point in time not verified by The Club). NOTE: They named the Holden Centre after this man.

  8. Thought some of you might be interested in this piece by AFLW expert Gemma Bastiani. It's an in-depth look at how the Dees' 2021 list was put together and how the club is developing its young players in the unique AFLW environment: https://sirensport.com.au/aussie-rules/aflw-player-development-how-the-demons-are-getting-it-right/ I've cherry-picked some highlights: - Melbourne fielded the fewest Victorian top-ten draftees in the 2021 season - While most Victorian clubs built their 2021 lists through the draft, Melbourne has looked to cross-code rookies more than any other Victorian club. A strategy somewhat making up for their limited access to high-end draft picks. Of the four inaugural Victorian clubs, the Demons have had access to just eight top ten Victorian players since 2017, compared to 11 at Collingwood, 12 at Carlton and 17 at the Western Bulldogs. - Players aren’t the only ones putting in extra time outside of contracted hours year round. Head coach Mick Stinear and his coaching panel run extra skills sessions twice a week, and willingly conduct one-on-one sessions with players whenever requested. - L.Pearce, on the turning point in her form ahead of her All Australian 2019 season - Pearce would head down to the men’s training sessions outside of her contracted hours to work with men's coach Greg Stafford. “Prior to that, obviously, I was working during the days and stuff and it was not until that 2018 [VFLW] season that I was able to drop off work quite a bit, which therefore gave me more time to invest in my game outside of normal training hours.” The fact that the club and Pearce were able to negotiate this extra position-specific training time meant the ruck was able to develop her ground-level game during team training sessions. - Also some interesting stuff from the likes of Hanks, Heath and Tarrant about their progress in the last few years.

  14. Surely Yze is wise enough to know he would be taking on a career-damaging scenario of constant political crises, broken list, demoralised players and a severe shortage of on-field leaders? There hasn't been a "new coach to basket case club" prospect this bad since the very highly rated Mark Neeld took over at the Demons. Yze has a realistic prospect of being a very visible part of a drought-breaking premiership at the Demons, perhaps even this year as well as riding the peak of the next couple of years. Staying with the Demons will only boost his credentials and give him a better prospect of a better senior coaching position in future.

  16. razor is a reasonably good decision-maker more often than not nicholls is horrible, and hates melbourne ever since gawn belted away an errant bounce once they are incredibly precious but it's an unforgiving role - they are made to adjudicate on grey areas that can be interpreted differently by three blokes on the field at any time; they should make them full-time professionals and reduce it to two on field at all times

  17. Happy with the change nothing against Milkshake mind you but Tom Sparrow deserves a run at it, he is a great kid and belongs at this level. Also confident the BBB will force his way into the side later in the season when his body is right. go Dees.!!!!!

  21. Yesterdays Crows/Saints game is the fourth game result corrupted by poor late umpires decision making. That free paid to Thilthorpe in the goal square is unbelievable. There is no way that was free kick. That was the kind of spoil seen a dozens of times every game and it’s just play on.

  30. Are you saying the umpires feelings get hurt and they then don’t uphold the rules of the game? I thought they were profess....... Razor copped abuse by a swan (think it was Papley) then paid frees to Hawthorn like they were going out of fashion. I think Razor should get an apology from the Swans player and then be dropped from his umpiring duties. He can’t be allowed to influence games due to his emotions thereby setting an example to the umpiring fraternity that they are impartial and need to view each incident on it’s own. Similarly the rules need to be scrapped and rewritten to avoid this interpretation BS that confuses and frustrates everyone. But yes I agree with you, Gawn gets violated against week in week out and the only reason I can’t think of is that he has [censored] off too many umpires. Just lucky he is the best ruck by a country mile.

  33. Hi all, hope you are all keeping safe and well especially with lockdown restrictions in Melbourne recently. I’ve been paying attention to Melbourne’s trade activity these past few days and delighted to see so many players have signed on for another season or two and looking forward to seeing the new recruits in action too. That includes Sinead & Lauren coming back for season three and two respectively. No surprises with either of them, I had little doubt they’d be returning. This is slightly off the topic of AFLW and some of you may be interested, others less so. Lauren & Niamh have returned to playing with the Dublin Senior Ladies Team in the past three weeks. They’ve played three games so far with three wins. Their next game is a semi final to be played on Saturday June 12th. I’ve attached links for their previous three games if anyone is interested in watching them back. The second and third games are shown here on the TG4 channel which has Irish commentary only so you’ll have to make it up yourself. This competition is the league so it’s not the main championship, that comes in a few weeks. However the density of this season makes every game very important. I would highly recommend watching the second game vs Cork, it was a cracking match. Lauren & Niamh have featured in each game so far, Goldie still recovering from her hamstring injury. Round 1 vs Waterford: How to get Round 2 vs Cork and Round 3 vs Tipperary. - Google TG4 Player. tg4.ie is the right one. - Click main menu in top right hand corner and make sure setting is on English. - Click the watch arrow in the main menu, then press sport. - Scroll down to find the tab “Peil na mBan Beo”. It means Live Ladies Football. The photo at the moment is of Niamh McEvoy kicking a ball so that’s a giveaway. - Round 3 is down as Tiobraid Arann v Ath Cliath. (Tipperary v Dublin) S 21 Ep 4. - Round 2 is down as Corcaigh v Ath Cliath. S 21 Ep 3

  34. Saints had their chances and blew it, just like we did. That free kick in the goal square thou, was that worse than the deliberate none call in our game? The umpires explanation “you prevented him from marking? WTF

  35. Not a chance the Pies go for an untried coach.. that club is falling apart, they will not trust the future of a club to a first time coach. Its Ross Lyon's to lose..

  38. ^ This Melksham at his best is walk up start. Unfortunately, I just don't think he can get back to that any more. He's still valuable to play multiple roles throughout the game to keep the team balanced. His kicking is still an absolute weapon and I think the discipline and effort issues are behind him. He just doesn't seem able to cover the ground any more - when he chases, he looks to be running up and down on the spot.

He is a great coach and has clearly done well with all the flags, but I love how they beat the swans and he is a genius (you said it, but also all the papers and radio have run with it today). Just wondering how much of a genius he has been for the remainder of the games they have played this year? Just a little gripe of mine.

  47. Back in March, NTFL club Nightcliff staged a thrilling comeback to beat St Mary’s by seven points after extra time to record its third consecutive premiership. Melbourne NGA Academy player player Andy Moniz-Wakefield (aged 17) who was a member of the team, is now representing Northern Territory in the team’s occasional games in the NAB Boys League. There’s some vision of him here during the summer season. Hopefully, we’ll see the government restrictions on community footy lifted to enable the Dandenong Stingrays who have three of the club’s NGAs in their ranks (including Mac Andrew) to resume playing.

  48. I just had a lengthy chat to one of our assistant coaches this morning. I asked him about the rumours of a few players being sore and potentially missing on Monday. But Jake Lever (He acknowledged Jake's ankle was sore) and Christian Salem (groin) both trained strongly and should play. The boys fly up tomorrow, have a Captain’s Run on the SCG and come home Tuesday. They then have 4 days off before the Bye. We spoke about the small forwards as this bloke looks after them. He’s really excited about Kade Chandler who kicked 5 goals in a little scratch match last week with players from Carlton, Essendon and Collingwood. We also spoke about the new training facility. One thing he told me that I didn’t know was that the oval at Gosch’s Paddock is being expanded to MCG size. That was definitely going ahead shortly. He was also fairly confident that the new facility would be built in the current AAMI car park.
