  1. Me either, I think she is the best football journalist by the length of the Nullabor Plain and has been for decades. The hatred stems from lingering misogynist tendencies by the consuming public and because she doesn't pull any punches, it tends to ruffle some fragile egos. I've heard her speak several times at private functions and I have all the time in the world for her, highly intelligent, sharp-witted and not afraid to call anything out.

  2. Did he carry on when Port gave Ollie a 6 year contract until he is 32? No! And I bet if Port had secured Petracca's signature on a 7 year contract until he is 33 he would say it was a great coup. Cornes is a dope.

  3. Hello all, Just thought I should post this link for those who haven't seen it yet. It is the first interview that I have seen of the new (and first female) Melbourne Football Club President Kate Roffey. Here is the link on the Melbourne Football Club official website: https://www.melbournefc.com.au/video/929744/meet-kate-roffey?videoId=929744&modal=true&type=video&publishFrom=1620363557001 I definitely enjoyed hearing about her passion for the Demons and how she believes that we all have a role to play to help make our club great. She is keen to see success with AFL and AFLW Premiership flags for both our men's and women's teams. Her pathway to becoming a Melbourne Demons supporter was also a bit different as she originated from country northern New South Wales before settling in Melbourne. One small amount of constructive criticism (primarily for the interviewer) is that Kate Roffey wasn't asked about the progress of our new home training and administration base. Perhaps there is no current news, but I am keen to hear Kate's thoughts on the Demons finally having a proper home (ideally close to the MCG). Please find us a home Kate! Nevertheless, it is great to know we have someone who has red and blue blood pumping in her veins and is just as excited about hopefully being able to finally end our Premiership drought(s) for both the men's and women's teams. I think I mentioned this in another post but I think these should be Kate's 4 objectives as President of the Melbourne Football Club. 1) Finding a home training and administration base for the Demons close to the MCG. 2) Having team success with the men's and women's teams winning AFL and AFLW Premierships. 3) Hopefully increasing our membership numbers to over 70,000. 4) Making the Melbourne Football Club financially strong and self sufficient with no more money issues. I believe this can all be done but it will take a lot of effort and determination. GO DEMONS!!!

  4. Melksham brings strong delivery inside 50 and should get better with more games. But he's on thin ice. Harmes I suspect is being brought in as a defensive midfielder to roam wing and put pressure on their transition out of defense which is generally quite strong and could be damaging on the MCG where they normally play well (and destroyed Richmond doing just that). Suspect Harmes will play a Houli-esque role as a small cut-off. Looking forward to him grabbing a few intercept marks across half back and proving many here wrong. I'm okay with these changes. End of the day Melksham provides more scoreboard pressure than Jones so he has an opportunity to make a difference here. He certainly struggled last week but his delivery was good and he got hs going in the 3rd quarter.

  6. Really? People are still getting sucked in by this old chestnut? #Demonmyths. As if the Match Selection Committee would say "Well we think Melksham isn't doing enough and he should be dropped for this match, but seeing as he's Goody's 'best mate' he gets another go". Come on now. Melbourne Football Club isn't run by a bunch of amateurs these days nor does the Coach have sole discretion on who is in or out of the team. I'm not saying Melksham deserves to stay in but I defer to the MSC's superior wisdom and knowledge.

  7. I think we can all agree Melkshams efforts are poor at times but if you can’t see his talent or upside you must be blind whether that should be enough to be in the side is another thing

  8. I was a co-founder of Demonology around 1997-8 for hazy memory, though I was a passenger and hardly a driving force. It was originally a merger of three small fan sites. Demon Chronicles, Hoju’s and another I can’t recall. I still play basketball with the main guy who founded the site, and lost touch with the other co-founder who ended up working at MFC for a few years and I still see him on LinkedIn.

  11. I agree. Myself and @Rhino Richardsdid the vast majority of the moderation on here in the early days after the platform move. Both of us copped quite a lot of stick for our hard line stance on things, but I’ve got zero regrets, I think it was essential for setting a benchmark for expected behaviour. I think it’s paid off now, but I’m probably biased!

  12. I love these people that hate Melksham..... It's a riot. 69% game time for 17 Possessions, 6 marks and 18 pressure acts. Sure he makes the odd mistake but lots of people have blinkers on

  13. I like the changes. In the interest of consistency and maintaining the chemistry a 'like-for-like' player is the best way to go especially as we are still needing to assimilate Brown into the team and structures. Right now Harmes offers more options than Sparrow so I'm ok having the more experienced guy in the team. He will be raring to go to make this work and keep his position in the team. I'll back him in. Plenty of time for Sparrow.

  14. Way, way back in the day, it was only match reports to be found online. Whispering Jack was doing it way back then too, plus Hoju had his own going, with the Melbourne Chronicle along with Demonology. There may have been a few others too. There was nowhere for people to talk about the footy and it was more having some knowledgeable people shouting their thoughts into the universe. Jack was the only place I could find out how the Melbourne players went in the VFL at Sandringham. Demonology was a really interesting place during its heyday. It had a very simple layout that often made it hard to find stuff, but it was a great place to have a debate (especially in the early 2000s). Also, who could forget rono's obsession with turning Darren Jolly into a 'multidimensional tall', playing forward, back and ruck! It's definitely something that Terry Wallace would have done! ? I was on Demonland back in the day too. I was Spunjy (I changed it in 2005 when the forum software was switched to prevent ambiguity, and embraced the 'Spongebob' that I was sometimes called). I never really understood the rivalry between the two sites. I was just happy to have multiple sites to be able to chat about the Dees, although my memory is that most Landers were members of both whilst those who identified as Ologists probably cross pollinated less. I do think that the move across to proper forum software and the really great work put into the site by @Nasher as well as the far superior moderation (Ology always had problems with that) resulted in Demonland becoming a much more welcoming place for newbies. I think that the strength and stability of @Demonlandand @Whispering_Jack as well as Nasher's work was the key reason we have such a vibrant and long standing community which is certainly one of the better fansites in the AFL. Thanks to everyone who helped make that happen, as well as those who helped with many the other MFC sites that have kept me distracted since the late 90s.

  17. I agree. I am another who has often said that long contracts are bad news. But CP is a generational player. Other players will come to the MFC to play with him. Sure list management is a gamble, but if CP was poached by another Top Club, i think I would give Footy away We have been pillaged for years

  18. The bloke really is so predictable these days. Yep, its a long contract, yep, its worth lots of money. He would be on teh radio right now saying, its a worry that Petracca signed only for 2 years.. Melbourne should have put a long term offer to him.. Melbourne are on notice .. blah blah blah. A couple in the media right now are embarrassing themselves with their rhetoric aimed at Melbourne.

  20. My only problem with Caro is that she seems to have a bloodlust for clubs/players/stories that aren’t performing, on field and off, as if she’s seeking to accelerate or even revel in their demise. If fearlessness and accuracy are the pillars of journalism, then empathy should come next, if only to balance the bad news with some hope and relatability. As a person, she may have it in spades, as a journalist, I’m not sure we’ve ever seen it.

  23. I think its been relatively forgotten that his mother passed away early in the year and he trained away from the group over in Adelaide - with Norwood I believe. To have to deal with such a major life event at his age and to get so fit with the program given to him by Burgo is frankly amazing. Shows outstanding dedication. We could just as easily been writing - Kozzie had a major interrupted pre-season and has the second year blues. He is clearly very driven and we are very thankful for that,

  25. Theres been times where I have watched footy classified and she's been bullied on that show due to her going against the grain that is the boys club mentality. I like that she doesn't back down and people would be surprised to learn that she has some really good contacts within clubs that actually trust her. Say what you want, but she's a fine journalist.

Well as normal as a Geelong supporter can be) has been saying for the last 2 years that the current Melbourne side reminds him so eerily of that Geelong side. All of a sudden it just clicked and they ran away with it. Here's hoping...

  31. Yeah look I feel for Sparrow. But maybe they want the experience of Harmes against a fairly robust experienced midfield. Perhaps he will do a job on Kennedy. Baker must be the medical sub. Melksham must do something the coaches really rate. I don’t see it. But we are 7-0 so I can’t say they don’t know what they’re doing.

  32. No he wasn't. He was poor all pre season and poor again against Fremantle. Not only that his game against North last week selfish, lazy and poor. I'm disappointed to hear that Sparrow has been left out in the expense of Harmes. Sparrow was a CLEAR best on ground by an absolute mile.

  34. The fact that anyone would start a thread on this is hilarious. SEN is pulp fiction - it's media trash and has been since Crocmedia moved in and should thus be treated that way. If you're getting your news from this source and subsequently taking personally, I'd be questioning a range of things...

  39. Good to see the Melksham haters out in force. The most obvious case of groupthink I’ve seen on this forum I reckon. He’s the best deliverer of the ball in to the 50 we have. For the same reason you all argued (rightfully) with me until you went blue that Spargo’s job isn’t about getting heaps of the ball, Melksham’s job isn’t to lay stacks of tackles. It’s to link up at half forward, win contests when needed and make sure we get meaningful delivery. Many seem to be assessing Melksham’s performance against Spargo’s role.

  40. I’m really disappointed Sparrow’s missed out to Harmes. Sparrow’s 2021 form exceeds anything we’ve seen from Harmes since 2018. Weid is being made to bide his time until a spot opens, IMO Harmes should have too.

  41. I concur with the previous posters. On the somewhat superficial level that you can judge someone after a single interview, Kate seems like a super impressive person for the role. Was always quite happy with the way Glen Bartlett spoke, the general progress and stability that has occurred at the MFC under his presidency, but I really do like that Kate is such a passionate Demons person/supporter at heart and seems very genuine in her desire to really connect with the average member/supporter.

  42. Thanks Bob. Like many others I was on both sites and it wasn’t a case of real rivalry because we often got together for functions and of course, forum footy, where we dominated the other forums. My highlights were coaching a game in which we had both Nev Jetta’s father and brother with the dad being the most coachable player you would ever want (wherever he went, so did the footy). Also, the day we played Collingwood and I put Supermercado at FF and he kicked a goal against Collingwood’s 300 kg full back who was making a comeback after a few years “inside”. Dazzle was pretty good too. We also tried our very best to help out when Tim Stanes (Demonology founder) fell ill and couldn’t run the site any more. Our combined functions at the Mountain View Hotel in Richmond before games were also good value. Perhaps, when we finally get over Covid19 and win a flag (may both come soon), we could organize a reunion.

  44. An old school journalist who has good contacts and cultivates and maintains those relationships. Reporting on rhe politics of football has it place, and is an important part of the reporting of football. Particularly as it relates to scrutinising the league and clubs. As stakeholders fans need to know there are some checks in place. Which is a key role of the press. And she has been the best at this for the better part of 30 odd years. Tough, uncompromising and writes well. In short good at her job. And has to do that up against two of the most sexist, patriarchal, boys club work cultures in Australia - footy and journalism. The problem now is that reporting on footy politics dominates the coverage game. And, is in turn dominated by ambulance chasers looking for 'scoops', clicks, and gotcha moments. And gossip. So much puerile gossip. This new wave take the trump approach - flood the zone with [censored]. Some will stick, some will get traction some will prove to be correct. But much will be bull [censored], which if actually called on it, the 'news breakers' will deflect and blame their source. But they hardly ever get called on it. Because the flood the zone strategy is very effective. So much rubbish, so often mean there is no time to analyse, or question, just move onto the next bit of gossip. There are a million examples. Tracc to pies just one recent one, which could well have been a strategic leak. Because a strategic leak is counted as a source these days. And never questioned. There will 5 more such examples today. Four of which will relate to the pies. And Caroline has to wade with the gossip mongers and amateurs in this zone flooded with [censored]. Must drive her spare.

  49. Harmes ahead of Sparrow is not rewarding current form, but hoping Harmes can capture his form from 3 years ago. I would be disappointed if that is the call they make. Especially as Sparrow is a much more like for like replacement for Viney. Baker medical sub to avoid dropping him after 1 game?
