  1. On the Melbourne Football Club website is an interesting interview with ANB and Kavisha Di Petro of aflplayers.com.au about him being awarded one of the Torrens University scholarships. He began a Bachelor of Teaching when he first started at uni, focusing on special education and disability studies. The passion and interest in working with people living with disability came from his maternal grandmother Cheryl (Neal) who was a professional jockey injured in a race fall which left her a paraplegic. Growing up with her in his life led him down the path he is following today. Nice to read about a football player who wants to contribute to society instead of being on the front page of the paper because of a scandal !! Well done, Alex. Congratulations and good luck.

  4. This is my first post. I devoted myself to support the MFC five decades ago. I plant red and blue fuscias in my garden. Baghdad Bob quote above has shaken my belief in the current Board and the process that has led to their election... And follows on from my shock of being told by the Club President who not to vote for. Mr President, you have poked a bear. I have registered the following question to be put to the Board at the AGM next Monday. Who provided the 'fair value' land valuation of 22.5 million and what were the disposed financial investments for $6.58 million and was that at 'fair value'/cost? These two numbers of $millions (one is the Bentleigh Club land increased by $13.5 million, or 257%) may have been plucked from thin air, for all of the lack of information in the Financial Statements for 2020. I am a retired businessman. Fellow devoted Dees on Demonland: this does not pass the PUB test. Baghdad Bob was right to ask, what are they hiding? These two numbers and how they were determined, go to the heart of the question of whether the MFC is a financial going concern, or in pub language, is it broke? The President's previous oversell of the virtues of a small, effectively self appointed stable board, using tactics suppressing candidate statements and access, has warnings all over it. Fellow Demonlanders You did not hear more than 150 words from any candidates because it seems the Board changed the rules prohibiting them from any further member contact. They were effectively gagged. How could this happen? I think I'm right in saying that for the first time under this President, we had the opportunity for input of an 'independent' snuffed. The new candidate had exceptionally good credentials according to his LinkedIn account. But the President actively canvassed his non-election. This is appalling. Who is this President? It is intolerable. It is now my firmly held view that the election process for this Board is void. It has tainted the entire Board. I do not expect my first post will be widely appreciated but it is motivated by my truly beating heart (yeah, someone will say bleating - derr) for the red and the blue over 57 years. Yes, I decided that the Dees were MY Club, 10 minutes after the first game of VFL football I ever went to. The 1964 grand final. I truly believe I will get to see the next one. "The behaviour of the Board is disgraceful and bitterly disappointing" (Baghdad Bob) and in my view, not one fit to lead my Club. My Club, that is on the cusp of its next grand final win. Notice to the Board : this bear will not hibernate this winter.

  5. Respect. My nephews are special needs. Their carers and educators are amazing people. Not many have the passion, aptitude or temperament to work in this area so hats off to you ANB. I hope you have a long and rewarding career.

  7. Respectfully you don't move a 3 time All Australian ruckman out of his best position. I don't mind the idea of occasionally resting Max deep in the forward line.
    6 points
  8. Agree. In addition Maxy can't lead, isn't particularly fast so his opponent would run off him all day and his kicking for goal is iffy. Much better to have him drop back to help out defensively where his marking ability is best utilised.

  9. ANB is a down to earth kid good on him at least he has a life after football something he will enjoy studying to teach people with disabilities and help them achieve what they want in life.

  10. We have to be careful using such words to describe the man, "specimen". His race and colour, has and continues to be vilified. I ask myself would a particular person want to be labelled with a particular word? I suggest he would not like to be called a specimen, even though it was meant with the right intentions. The word has probably been used by the slavers and phrenologist, to described psuedo social/mental hierarchy, as well as others using it to be derogatorive or to dehumanise the person. I hope you understand were I am coming from, given the Collingwood racial report and the on-going saga about social equity and racism. We all need to talk and walk kindly with our "brothers and sisters" who have been more oppressed in this world. I hope that I have not offended you, I just felt I needed to call it out!

  11. So you can stand someone 5m to the right or left of the mark. If umpires paid holding the ball and incorrect disposal correctly you would have a much better game. Adding rule changes is a band aid solution as coaches will work a way around the changes. Pay the old fashion laws of the game correctly and you will have a faster free flowing game. When the umpires went whistle happen on holding the ball last year the games got better. Shame they only did it for a couple of weeks

  13. All good mate. I was the first disabled kid at my school I had to learn and so did the school. There just wasn’t any infrastructure. Toughened me up, so it wasn’t all bad But i do look back sometimes and just think “wow” :)

  14. Here's an idea.... How about we just play him as an inside mid where he finished 3rd in a brownlow. One of the more peculiar coaching decisions along with Harmes at half back. We definitely have an abundance of inside mids so I agree someone is likely to be traded.

  15. Can anyone explain why Angus Brayshaw is now permanently 23cm above the surface of the Earth? Is this a product of new high altitude training or has he spent too much time on the low-G treadmill? It's gonna mess with his GPS data for sure.

  16. Whatever your thoughts about Majak Daw's invitation to join the Dees training as a trial for a SSP spot on our list as a KP forward or back Or ruck trial there is no doubt That any one's heart would be gladdened to see that huge smile On his face on the attached photos of training today. That was the Best part of Harley's tryout in 2020 with us showing that in AFL humanity and team culture is still the greatest gift in a Club.. To see Majak out in the track just enjoying life and being considered good enough and appreciated will have given him a great boost. None of us really know the Full facts about the lows he has been through himself and with his marriage and fatherhood but we may just be able to without too much pressure contribute to his development and growth and enjoyment also adding to some games of footy which he obviously loves playing. Lets support him all the way as we did with Harley and make this ride a Win for all of us especially Majak.

  17. None taken. Didn't think of it like that. Coming from a pacific background that was born and bred overseas personally the word 'specimen' was always taken as a compliment or badge of honour due to our natural pacific build. Different cultures to Majak obviously, but can see your point. Cheers

  21. The idea sounds great in theory but it never works. He hardly ever takes a contested mark when playing deep forward. He's much better at taking a grab in defensive 50 than forward 50. He's a ruckman by trade, not a forward.

  22. Nup...if you want to know why it took Max so long to develop it wasn't only his attitude and injuries. It was the attitude of a dumb coach and footy department that persisted with Spencer in the ruck at Casey whilst trying to make the far better prospect, Max...into a key forward. I remember watching him in the ruck for Casey one day when Spencer was out injured and couldn't for the life of me figure why he wasn't the number one choice ...he blitzed, would we leave him there? no they put him back forward again. It took some serious changes at the club before this changed. Max flourished in the number one ruck role when he got the chance and that's where he plays.

  23. ANB, Gus, Hunt and Harmes - if these players lifted this season coming, we are in for a stellar year. These guys are the feeders ... each has very good upsides in the game. I'd expect Yze and Chocko to work hard on bringing this out in this foursome.

  24. Add this to the long list of poorly thought out, untested rule changes the AFL have introduced on the back of the myth that high scoring = good football. If a player takes a mark, and takes a couple of lateral steps and is clearly about to play on, is the bloke standing the mark seriously just meant to stand there glued to the spot until the umpires call play on? They'll be paying an extra dozen 50m penalties a game. Although that will increase scoring, so I guess the AFL will pat themselves on the back.

  25. we brought in sideshow bob as we want that two pillar structure of b brown / weed plus jackson and fritsch floating around and a couple of smalls in pickett and spargo two are injured and one is missing a huge chunk of preseason due to a bereavement i think they WILL try and keep the structure as intended of two talls, jackson and weed, another small, plus spargo

  27. This is the worst rule change of the lot. Will be a spectacular mess. Will decide some games.

  28. This has the potential to make footy unwatchable with so many 50m penalties, but the big concern for me is it opens up another option for umpires to influence results. For example if they give one team half a second longer before calling play on after the player has actually played on, the ball carrier will be off and gone. There'll be no stats on it so it goes completely under the radar. Of all the rule changes over the last decade, this one has me the most concerned.

  29. they will have to rename the game of australian rules to "australian 50 metres rules" and we can thank kevin sheedy for even having a 50 metres penalty

  30. Well done Alex and well done to Kavisha, who I taught at Monash, a couple of years ago.

  31. I think one consequence of this rule change will be that, with the man on the mark anchored, it may well be so much easier to determine when the player with the ball moves off his mark, and hence many more play ons will be called, as opposed to 50m penalties imposed.

  32. He sounds like a genuinely good fella off the field. And his season last year wasn't as bad as a lot of people made it out to be. Should be in contention for round 1 and the match simulation that I saw a couple of weeks back would back that up.

  34. i agree re weid's potential and i think it was naive of us to trade Hogan when we did and expose weid after 2 good games and we've paid the price for that by not having a functioning forward line whatsoever for the last two years. i think daw is a good addition to the list and i expect he will see some senior action early in the season when tmac fails to impact

  35. Agreed. I'm hoping Hunt lines up in the forward line come round 1 and should be considering he's coming off a 4 goal game. Is one of our more natural goal kickers, and a pretty reliable set shot for goal.

  36. Ok here we go champ Marks per game Daw 3.6 vs 3.5 Goals per game Daw 0.8 vs 1.0 One percenters per game Daw 3.2 vs 1.3 I wasn't necessarily saying he was an ideal replacement for Weid but he could fill a need now that Weid has found another way of going MIA. I know there is a lot of love for the Weid but if you look at facts he has yet to prove he is anything like a consistent or significant contributor to team success I am not being critical of Sam and hope like everyone he reaches his full "potential" which he hasn't gone close to - yet !

  37. Plus he has currency. Plenty of teams are short inside mids, Carlton for example. He’s worth a late first early second rounder. I trust our recruitment team to convert a pick into a good player, perhaps a young key defender with an eye to May’s replacement?

  39. I’m not (currently) worried about our list. It has sufficient quality, depth and diversity. However, I still have question marks about the quality and dynamism of our coaching (outside of the Ooze and Mr Williams). Goodwin (potentially) still has a dynamic forward line available to him early this year. As stated in the opening post, this however will require some flair and out of the box thinking. It’ll be interesting to see if Goodwin can will himself to get him there and smash the traditional, formulaic, old school paradigm-based forward line thinking. This is the zone in which the good coaches earn their pay. Quite simply, we need to kick more goals this year. Goodwin knows this. Time will tell if he can execute/achieve this. In the meantime, stay classy San Diego.
