  1. The record needs to be set straight. JJ's "lack of grit" is a myth. I've watched him at Casey on numerous occasions and haven't once seen him "lack grit", in fact I've seen the opposite on many occasions. The claim by Dr. D is just silly.

  3. Being a footy supporter isn't a tipping contest. Being the first to criticise a first year player is not something to hang your hat on. The thing I look for when considering the views of others is how they sum up their view based on evidence. For the most part, having a strong view (either way) about our club is the first sign that the poster is unlikely to be considering the available evidence as there's usually not a lot of it. Here's an example of a poor post(in my view): Goodwin has lost the players. ...and here's a good one (regardless of whether I like the actual viewpoint): Goodwin may have lost the players. Our contested ball numbers and 1 percenters are down from the start of the year and the players' body language has been poor. It's not about being negative or positive but providing a balanced view based on evidence. Being hyper-critical or overly glowing in praise - without evidence - is to make the same mistake.

  4. Wouldn't call Sparrow "slow". I think possibly you and others are getting a little sucked into the cliche of 'slow inside mids' and 'quick skillful outside players' when players aren't always as cut and dry as that. Sparrow has a more than handy burst of speed on him. If you look at how he's managed to break into a midfield most thought was already packed, I don't think it's that surprising he's 'reasonably highly' rated for the stage of his career he's at. I might have missed it, but I haven't seen a lot of people saying Pickett is "about to explode"? I think a few are expecting a pretty decent jump in his output, I'm one of them I suppose, but the whole notion of 'exploding' or having a 'breakout year' is probably the most overdone thing in football. He's got some improvement to do, no doubt, but he lead us for tackles inside 50 and had decent rankings for goal assists, score involvements and goals, so probably a bit early to be basically calling him a bust after 1 season, especially a season FAR from normal preparation and training wise. And personally I don't think Bowey or Laurie are that similar to Kozzy. I would class Kozzy as a crumbing pressure forward with x-factor, whereas I would have both Bowey and Laurie more as higher small forwards, more likely to be looking at the spots of players like Spargo and ANB. Even so, we have been THAT short on creative small forwards that I don't really think drafting those two is a bad sign for Kozzy at all. For mine, I would be placing more effort into queries on players like Brayshaw, vandenBerg, Smith, Melksham, TMac, Tomlinson, ANB, and a few more than I would on young blokes just starting in their careers.

  5. Think people are being a bit harsh on Pickett given that he's just a kid coming off his first year at this level.
    6 points
  6. Hahaha. Kossie will be unbelievable. He has every trick a small forward needs, his pressure is brilliant and the only thing stopping him is clearly his tank. He did things last year that nobody in our side can do in terms of creating openings and chances at scores where normally there'd be none. He is unreal.

  7. As many have posted - the coach has to train and select the "right" players, but once the game starts it's mostly up to the selected players to deliver the result. I think we've lacked on-field in game leadership over the years. Jones and Viney seem to be introverts and focus on their own game rather than directing the traffic - sure they may think they "lead by example" but it's not enough. I think the sometimes maligned Jordan Lewis probably gave us a lot in this area - I note we were 12-7 in 2017 and 16-8 in 2018 when he played. I think his contribution may have been undervalued in those years - including by me - because he wasn't the player he once was and didn't always go. Now I think the backline is well placed with May and Lever. I think Max is a respected and very capable leader at providing team social cohesion but I'm not confident about his ability to be the general in the midfield and direct traffic. Petracca and Oliver are tremendous players but are they going to co-ordinate the action? I think probably Brayshaw is the man most likely in this area to have the required qualities - hopefully with full length games he can return to his best position as part of the midfield rotation and be in a position to direct. I think part of the FD love for AVB are his leadership attributes but can he command a best 22 spot on output? Melksham was the leader of a very inexperienced forward line in 2020 (as evidenced by his role as stand-in team captain) and that's possibly why he retained his position despite some very ordinary form. For all his playing limitations ANB is possibly the man most likely to have the personality and intelligence lead in this area, but again can he command a best 22 spot on output? Maybe Ben Brown can bring a major contribution down there. Until these on field leaders emerge and direct I think we will continue to struggle with consistency.

  11. Thanks Binman, I haven't looked but it would be interesting find a clip of Saban talking about the program today. The "Tide" certainly turned their results around quickly and have continued to be one of the most dominant teams in the highly competative College Football scene. This has meant they can attract highend talent every year and the system and results become self perpetuating. The football department program generates profits for the University of between $20million and $30million a year. As I've been writing this Bama have finished as the Champions for the seventh time in 13 years. We should be so lucky. There is some talk about Saban retiring but I think the team will have continued success becuase of the program.

  16. Apologies for getting this conversation onto something training related but I’m starting to get really frustrated at the lack of info coming from the club with training. Pictures are nice but they lack context, there’s also word there was a time trial but is there any article about who performed well? Maybe I’ve been spoilt over the years by D-lands track watchers, and ok I don’t want to hear the usual “boys are flying” but just something about how they are handling training in groups or how Ben Brown is fitting in would be nice.

  18. Project player? Kozzie is still in his teens! The kid had 20 scoring shots in 14 games in his debut year. If he had kicked 13.7 instead of 7.13 there would be no one questioning his value

  19. Yeah WA can play hardball and Freo and West Coast can spend the entire season in a Victorian hub and not play a single game up there. How sweet that would be! If a vaccine becomes available in late Feb /early March, it would not surprise me to see the AFL community get priority access to the vaccine. AFL is big money and nobody wants another interrupted season, not the AFL and not the states.

  20. Way too early to make a cleat call on Kozzie yet imo. Yes, he missed some absolute sitters and slipped over way too much, but then he also did some extraordinary brilliant things also. A raw , talented, 1st year player who’s at least a chance to be a gun... but no guarantee. Let’s talk with more clarity at years end as I’m on the fence.

  21. Im not agreeing with everything the good Doc has put up but Sparrow and Pickett are 2 players that I have queries about and would be surprised if they are regular players. Im surprised how a slowish not super skilled mid like Sparrow is spoken about reasonably highly and hope Im wrong in my negativity. Those that rate Pickett as 1st class and about to explode (theres quite a few), are plainly wrong I think, and rose coloured glasses abound. Look at the Stats. Why would we draft 2 similar to take his spot? About as spectacular as David Cordner (look him up) and about as useful. Im picking a side here and dont hope to be wrong!

  30. I'm sorry, not sure how long you've been around demonland but I've got a long history of projecting accurately players careers and their trajectories. I didn't mention sparrow because I believe his 2 handed ball drop and lack of advertised on field pace will limit his potential and Jordan's lack of grit, strength and pace seems to be his downfall. I won't even back over the years and years of history where I have gone against the common views of biased demon supporters (i.e. that every player is a gun as soon as they're drafted) and analysed each player on their merit. When everyone was calling Pickett our next Cyril Rioli, I was the first one questioning as to why he is slipping over at every contest. I could go on for an eternity. I'm not being negative, im being realistic. We've missed finals since 2018 with Gawn, Oliver and, Petracca in the guts and an AA calibre Full back. That means we either have significant holes all over the ground, or our coaching is completely inept or a combination of both. I also don't read too much into the Yze appointment. I'll read into it greatly when he becomes the head coach. Until then, Goodwin has too much influence. If he has any influence, he has too much. I've seen more than enough from him to realise that he's lost the players and most of the fans.

  31. In the spirit of looking for new and inspiring I'll set aside the likes of Petracca, Gawn and May and focus on players who can have a big difference between current and possible. Headlining that would be McDonald, Brayshaw, Harmes, Melksham and Lever, who have all already shown they can be much better than their recent form. Credit to Lever though for showing very good signs of working his way back to it. But the ones that would bring me real joy to see lift their game - Brayshaw - I believe that an in-form Brayshaw is an uncannily effective midfielder, especially when play is not quite at a stoppage but still in chaos. I'm convinced he has great, intuitive situational awareness once the ball is in hand but isn't so great at working into the correct positions. Put him in as a true center midfielder and let the play naturally come to and through him. Fritsch - The best of Fritsch is the best of medium marking forwards playing at the time and going back some years too. A dangerous forward in his own right who also makes the priceless contribution of wisdom in drawing defenders away from the other forwards. Pickett - I love the way he plays and the more impact he is having on a game the more fun everyone will be having. Weidemann - The forward line's beleaguered garrison. No wonder he looks so serious. The poor guy is weidely underrated and with a little help from Brown I'd be really hoping his effort will see more rewards. Langdon - Yep, he's been excellent. And there are not many things I like better in football than a player who succeeds with humility, hard work that is also smart use of that effort. Would only take a little slice extra to become a huge player, AA wingman and all that jazz.

  32. Agree pollyana. As I think bing181 noted the dees have lacked strong on field leadership for a long time. I think we are heading in the right direction in tgis regard but I fully concede that could be wishful thinking.

  33. In my opinion BDA, he deserves all the "blanket condemnation" he gets! He probably also needs professional help, but I'm sick of hearing "excuses" offered for anyone who thinks its acceptable to demean women - not to mention embarrassing his club, his family and least of all himself. Being an [censored] (as he must surely be given all the education all AFL players receive) does not excuse what he has allegedly done. I'd have no hesitation in sacking him if guilty.

  34. Thanks Dworship, interesting stuff (the post and the clip). My takeaways are: It reinforces the importance of coaching, however as you suggest more in terms of the importance of coaching as it relates to the development of players, particularly personal development Nick Saban does not explicitly make this point but implies that the development of players is a team effort, with the involvement of range of coaches and key staff Nick Saban emphasizes that helping players develop than elite mindset is critical - they need to have 'champion' mindset The top of the pyramid (the team goal) is not winning a championship - it is everyone being the best they can be, a champion team 9and a team of champions?) and a winning mindset (eg dominating their opponents). The implication being winning will take care of itself with these other things in place Saban doesn't mention himself as one of the key parts of the winning 'pyramid' or things about tactics, game style, technique etc etc (he might have them as elements, he just didn't mention them) Your post and the Saban clip reinforce the good points that Deespencer made about success being a function of any number of detail, samll and lareg - eg admin, governance, resourcing, facilities, development, etc etc And finally, perhaps it is is confirmation bias, but it also reinforces that the key element of success is the players. As Suban notes ,it is the exception, not the norm that some people want to be the very best they can be and strive for excellence. Of course development is critical but the base he is working from is players who want to be the best. Good development program gives players the best chance of realising that goal - but no amount of development will make up for a lack of personal drive. Which is why elite sports put so much emphasis in the drafting process on character. And the other related point is development and indeed tools such as mindfulness area all about preparing the players for optimal performance on game day. Development as investment. But once the whistle blows it is pretty much all down to the players to ensure their performance reflects that investment and they perform at their optimal level.

  41. For a player who played the majority of his underage footy as an inside mid, he is the least physical player I've seen. As a half forward, the only reason he knocks up decent tackle numbers is because an opposition player nearly always lunges at a loose ball with more ferocity and desperation and ANB has the opportunity to wrap that player up in a tackle. Now some of that may be by design given Goodwin's game plan has always relied upon outnumbering at the contest but if you look across the AFL at the really good half forwards, they all offer a whole lot more than just being able to provide an extra number at contests. ANB offers very little other than his elite running ability and I've always maintained the sooner Goodwin makes a fookin upgrade to that position, the better. But it is Goodwin. So naturally I expect to see him lining up at half forward come round 1.

  42. Between you and Dr D the Club may as well close down. Such negative posts without even commenting upon the new Coaches potential for influence on all players skills etc improvement plus the all important game plan oh and the players Marking time! "only the young ones " DrD says as if Sparrow Jordan BBB and our stars and potential A and B graders From last year are sitting playing play station in the new gym inside the Magnificent new facilities. Finding it hard to motivate yourself guys then why not look at it half glass full instead of empty ?? If our stars perform up to 2020 and everyone else in between them and the youngsters goes up 10% plus the younguns take on 20 % natural improvement with our new Coaches I would place us in Finals contention with a bullet if no serious injuries. Of course there is always the chance of the false dawn again but I believe when you look for the positives they are fair dinkum screaming at your face in both natural ability and development. Can't wait to see the new Tommy Mac and even Joel Smith's footy awareness which if improved will add immeasurably to his considerable natural flair. About 25 Players hold our future in their hands and the more they improve the better our stars and match winners will be. Bring on those silly practice matches and serious match practice at training for us to see the effort and dedication that's going into our season from all in the Footy Department and players. A day at the G Is just what we all want to saviour With the fruits of the last 6/7 years hard build up come together in a wave of a Team performance That looks switched on and purposeful about it's destiny and journey in 2021.

  44. Hem My title of 58er should also give you an idea how Many times Or false dawns we have had in 56 years but I believe we are getting the closest in potential players covering most positions for a balanced list ( with some depth) than in the last 5 decades plus. If our development can be fruitful by Yze and Chocco as a point of difference plus the game day coaching supporting Goody then many other problems will disappear and results be more reliable and consistently achieved. It may take another 1 or 2 seasons for this to happen but I believe it is a great base fir this season to launch a genuine run fir success. Covid or no Covid.

  46. When BBB was at North and producing some great footy kicking multiple goals I was thinking this is someone that would be good to have being tall and hard to match up against. Going back as far as 2014. However one player that l would hope be injured was BBB when playing North. Never in my wildest dreams thought that we could get him at our club. . I wait for the day that he runs out with the Dees as well DZ that is a thrill for me. I rate him highly.

  47. My problem is that I still remember the player numbers from the 1950s and 1960s like they were still playing, but I struggle with the current team.
