  1. Great news for our Nic Nat clone...

  2. I assume his management took the one year, while the cap is low, then will look for a real payday when he’s proven himself this year and next. If the economy improves by end of 2021, his next contract could be huge.

  4. A sad announcement. I have been following the dees passionately for forty odd years (defined by regular attendance at games) and in all sincerity Omac is one of my all time favorite MFC players. My favorite demon players over my time of watching them are not necessarily among the best players in their respective team, indeed of my favorites probably only Robbie was the best in the teams he played with. My favorite players are generally those whose effort and work ethic are perhaps greater attributes than their talent. Talent is overrated. Perhaps some might describe them as journeymen, a phrase I've never understood being used as a pejorative. Some of my favorites include: Ray Biffen (thanks Ray for signing my dees club song fable single) Russel 'Rhino' Richardson (thanks Rhino for that game you won us at Princess Park after Leigh Matthews assaulted Steve Smith) Peter Giles (thanks Pete for taking on bigger opponents week i week our - and your hair, of course) Garry baker (what more needs to be said), Spud Dullard (best name in footy and thanks for rucking against the monsters of the 70s) Sugar Healy (thanks for being captain at tight time and unlike your brother remaining true) Jack Watts (thanks for your class - oh and you brilliant 2017 season which ensured PD had to use you avatar for a time) All made terrific contributions to the club I have long loved, a club i could only dream of representing. And most important of all everyone them seem to be really great people. Respect. And much respect Omac. Thanks for your contribution and joy you brought me. I really hope you continue your AFL journey. If not, no biggie, someone so smart and hard working will do great things. And how many people get to play near on 100 games of football or play consecutive finals at a packed MCG heaving with delirious dees fans. Well played sir. One thing though. As i posted some time ago I tricked my family of naming our dog Oscar. But as my wife is German, unbeknownst to me, she registered his name as Oskar, which is the name on his dog tag. Apologies for that oversight Oscar. But I do wonder if its is fated and Oskar Baker will become one my favorites too.

  5. He's a smart kid McQueen reads the tea leaves and backs himself. I'm confident based on what I hear if we do the right thing he"ll extend again

  6. 1 year? Great to have an extension but I’m a bit underwhelmed.

  8. Thanks for your service Omac in the red and blue, had a patch in 2017 where you really showed confidence and inroads but alas it wasn't to be. 80 odd games more than I ever played, good luck to you in your future endeavors. Some of you posters really need to have a look at yourself. Total lack of class by some and please don't use "this is a fan forum" as a pathetic excuse

  9. Anyone with plans ready to go are going to have state and federal governments throw money at them over the next 18 months. Hopefully we have a well developed plan in the wings or we may miss the stimulus-train.

  10. Wasn't he 'flighty' or something? Strange. Great news for the club, though. It might only be an extra year but he has shown some commitment moving forward to the cause and that can only be viewed as a positive!

  12. Mitch would be a good insurance for our key forwards 196cm tall and can play in a number of position. He is a very good mark. Will be 31 next season however IMO will hold his own. Played 5 games in 2020 and his 2 games late in the season were excellent where he took 13 marks in his last game which probably tipped him in favour of another year. If given the opportunity he will present himself well.

  13. Oscar's not in our best 22, but he has been a loyal MFC player and (in my observation, at least) is a quality person. In this context, it's not without a touch of irony that one reads some of the slander here about him, given that: - he is apparently one of the more intellectually gifted players in the AFL; and - outside of football, he has done very well academically and has excellent career prospects. He just also so happened to play 80 plus games for the Melbourne Football Club. That, to me, is a successful person every day of the week. He ought feel very proud of himself, as I'm sure his family does. Good luck to the bloke.

  14. I like this call, especially in light of the decision to get rid of Omac, not chase Phillips harder, and trade Preuss. I agree that he probably won't play many games but if any of our key position players go down he's the kind of backup you want on your list. I'm happy for him to be our Cam Pedersen, who pops in for a 2 goal cameo at some point and apply pressure on the senior team.

  16. We’re a very insecure fan base. It’s an unattractive trait. LJ has never given the slightest impression that he was unhappy. He came across as a genuine enthusiastic big kid at the B&F. Let’s not fret about what may or may not happen and just watch this lad grow and develop over the next couple of years. He’s going to be special. Btw have we had 3 better youngsters than LJ, Rivers and Pickett? I can’t recall. Exciting times ahead imv.

  17. Jeepers the sniping is tedious and tiresome. It is taking a not insubstantial amount of thread space. Mods can we issue some more strongly worded cease and desist letters please?

  18. I humbly admit I was wrong. For 47 years I thought Melbourne supporters were different to those of other clubs. Although we have been, in the main, inept for those years, I thought we had the capacity to show some dignity, respect and, for most of us at least, unconditional love for the institution and by implication, its players. But I was in denial and delusional. What I have learnt from this thread is that many are just as egotistical, righteous, ignorant, envious and insecure bully(boys) as other clubs' supporters and those in the broader community. Oscar is not the enemy, just the mirror. It would serve some to cease projecting their own inner demons (pun not intended) on a soul who gave his best and take a deep look inside their hearts and take stock of their own defects of character. The MFC would be better served, and by implication, the broader society, if we appreciated people like Oscar who's been nothing but a demonstration of grace, decency and commitment.

  21. 10 replies and all of them positive. You're all nuts. He was picked twice and dropped twice before he was picked a 3rd time and the season finished before he had time to be dropped again. He's soft. He doesn't do the number 1 non negotiable for any key forward which is to bring the ball to ground. He doesn't defend either. He will lead up and take nothing marks on the wing but that's not a key forwards job and it means he's not where we need a big man which is competing for long kicks. Ben Brown, Weid, Jackson and even Petty should all be ahead of him. Which means he's 5th in line, a position we could easily cover with Tom McDonald if things get that desperate, which is very unlikely. We'll get to the end of the season and he'll retire after maybe 2-5 meaningless games if we have a terrible run with injury and everyone will wonder why we don't have the right depth of outside runners or skilled flanker types. And this is why. We're just burning through list spots on nothing footballers rather than churning the list looking for that diamond in the rough.

  23. Now that news turned a crap day into something much better for me! LJ will make huge strides in the next couple of years. Why would he commit to a long term deal now? Much better to defer for a couple of years when his real worth will be known, and he will get paid accordingly.

  24. Awesome news! WA clubs will come hard for him, so great to lock him away and keep watching him develop. He came on quicker than expected this year after struggling to pick up the pace early. He's a unique talent. Good stuff Jacko and club!

  25. Wow. Another rich club gets another government handout when they already have a home base. Meanwhile we still don't have one. And why are they calling it the 'Daniel Andrews State Government '? It doesnt belong to that lunatic. Must have been part of the deal to get the funds.

  26. Doesn't help when like so many on here who suffer MFCSS and the sky is always falling listen to BS rumors put on here by posters who claim to have sources telling them stuff. Yet when you actually check the timing of their posts with BF posts and media stories, that is obviously their source

  27. After his second Knee reco Melbourne promised him a spot on the list and they kept their word. I love the fact that the club has heart and is willing to give a young lad like Aaron that chance to pursue his dream l will be watching his progress with a lot of interest. Wishing him all the very best.

  28. I love that bloke. My heart is beating true. As an aside, Adem’s niece used to work at the firm where I work (a few years ago now). She was a first class person - very well regarded, both professionally and personally. She was a passionate Demons’ supporter and she said that her entire family was too - they all loved Uncle Adem. It’s brilliant he’s back at the club. I’ve got a good feeling about next year.

  31. jeez - now on this site as well as the arguments between the eternal optimists and the debbie downers with severe MFCSS re the Melbourne list and contracts, we're on to the equivalent discussion about the economy! If history is any guide you should bet against MFC and go long on the housing market.

  32. I agree because regardless, no one knows what the cap and list sizes will be in 2023 right now. He has also spent more time in the hub than in Melbourne city. I can understand a base reluctance to commit for too long. Any extension that means a player is not out of contract at the end of a coming year is gold. 1 year or 3 years. Doesn't matter in that regard as long as there is no media storm during the season. Also, every time someone signs for longer people lament their loss of form, saying they got lazy with security etc. For those people, short extensions should also be gold.

  34. I have a work mate from WA who had Luke over at his house a few weeks ago (his son played with both LJ and Riv), ......anyhow my mate was asking when he was gojng to come back and play for the West Coast, whereas LJ shook his head gave a fist pump and a big smile and said "GO DEES!!!!". He's a beauty alright.

  36. Oscar was not born with the natural ability however he did apply himself and held his head high against some very good forwards. I feel for a person that played 81 games and gave his best at times in a struggling side. Good luck Oscar and hope that you find a new home. Some team might be able to use you in some capacity. I am sure l am not alone in wishing you the very best of luck.

  37. Lazy Journalism - MFC have a gun - therefore he will be poached Insecure MFC supporter - we have a gun player therefore he will leave Have confidence folks! Lets hold our sht together and have a massive season next year. None of our good players have looked to leave recently, Gawn, Viney, Gus etc. in fact we have attracted players like May who want to come to us Go Demons

  39. With regards to point 1, your opinion was that he's more likely to stay, not your source. Your source said it was far from a lock, yet within days he has extended. You put it out there, so you should expect to have your source questioned. Point 2 - a one year extension is better than the none that your source was leading you to believe. The fact that he's half way through his first contract and has extended it by a year is not only a positive sign, but also quite smart by the kid from a financial perspective, as well as for us. Point 3 - if you throw a enough darts at a dartboard, you will hit bullseye at times. Your (close to) 3500 posts in 526 days suggests you are putting a lot out there. And finally, calling you out isn't trolling. When you give it out, you need to accept it when it comes back at you. Learn from it.

  46. thank you Oscar Unfairly blamed for midfield errors and lack of backline skill. As goalkeeper your stats would be far better than people imagine especially your disposal which was in AFL standards quit ok. Good luck in your career and life and be proud of what you achieved Fir our mighty Demons.

  48. If we have another bad season next year and underperform, i think there is a live possibility Petracca and Oliver both request trades. that's how important 2021 is for the MFC. i hope they're making the right call backing Goodwin in.

  49. As an AFL player Oscar is limited but like a few others here I acknowledge that as he's got to 80 games he isn't the worst footballer going around at an AFL club. He's put in some solid performances and of course (like Frost) had his purple patch in 2018. Unfortunately I think for him he's been the scapegoat a lot of the time when as a defender there's only so much he can do if the ball is coming in without enough pressure being put on by our midfield. That said I think his time at the club has come to an end, we have a couple of younger players getting to that point where they need to be played and with Tom not going anywhere I feel that there isn't going to be much opportunity for him. Blunt statements of "he's a spud" and "not AFL standard" are a bit harsh on the guy though.
