  1. No no no The word when he left Port was that he was already over footy then, and he hasn't regained that desire since crossing to Hawthorn - just happy to earn a pay cheque. This is Crawf shopping around damaged goods. His last good year was 2016.

  2. Here is part of what Slobbo said about it: Giants big man Shane Mumford came under MRO scrutiny and social media angst after a typically robust performance against Melbourne. He was even called a sniper by a caller on 3AW on Sunday. Have to disagree. If that had been a Melbourne player he would have condemned him and asked for a 5 week sanction.

  3. He has been played out of position since 2018. He’s a dashing back player, period. Not a forward or midfielder. He has loads of natural talent but it’s been blunted by over coaching . He should just be told to get out there and play with that dare and dash, the attack on the ball, which was so exiting when he first broke in around 2016. If he is let go I for one would be very very disappointed.

  4. They decided on the 3 players they wanted and they got them. Analysing those selections against pick numbers without taking into account the entire draft, is an over-simplification of the situation. If you don't trade up and take Kozzie, you probably don't get Rivers. Also, Kozzie is a 19-year-old small forward. Complaining that he doesn't get enough of the ball is almost ludicrous. His impact in his first year has been significant. I think Taylor has done a great job of analysing the talent without being influenced by hype.

  5. Does anyone else have trouble with the crazy camera coverage? There is an obsession with showing coaches, injured players being treated, and replays of how injuries occured often being shown in preference to the actual live play. 2 Examples. in Q4 at 6:30 Langdon collides with Lloyd and then Reid gets the ball and kicks it. We do not see the ball in flight because we immediately cross back to Lloyd who is doubled over. We then cross back to the ball at the end of its flight being marked by Salem. In Q4 at 4:55 Picket marks (lovely pass from Spargo) and goes back and kicks a point. We are then shown a replay of a previous passage of play involving Viney . The next thing we see is the ball being thrown in on the opposite side to the Viney replay and we do not actually know how the ball got there because WE DO NOT SEE THE KICK IN. This is just a sample from the last 7 minutes - there were many more. Alf Potter would be turning in his grave. Great last quarter effort.

  6. Dear Jason Taylor, Thank you so much for Trent Rivers. We love him. Sincerely, Most Melbourne supporters.

  7. He was almost being applauded for his efforts on the night. They were certainly laughing about it and not taking it seriously. Then again the AFL don't take it seriously by their own actions. Sure they talk a good game when it comes to wanting to stamp out gut punches and sling tackles and making the head sacrosanct but they always fail to follow up with sanctions that would deter that behaviour.

  8. Total thug. Unacceptable in this day and age. Pathetic he has not copped more criticism, though unsurprising given footy media is dominated by ex footballers who are almost meat heads - meat heads who instinctively say no case to answer for every hit. But there is some justice. In game decided by 5 points Mumford gifted us a goal when the ball was clear of our 50 and IIRC another he gave away on the wing ended with a goal being kicked (i think)

  9. No. If Hawks are prepared to let him go after giving up Pick 15, 35 and Burton (who was pick #19 just two years earlier) there is a problem. iirc didn't he tell GWS or GCS to not draft him as he wouldn't go there. Stay away.

  10. That's nonsense! He is as brave as they come, almost kamikaze sometimes!

  11. Was not a sling. His arms were mostly free and contact fell on his shoulder mostly. not suspension worthy imo

  12. Except when they grow some balls and suspend a no-namer like ANB. The AFL invalidate themselves when they turn a blind eye to bigger names and not penalising expansion clubs.

  13. I wasn’t sure about drafting a ruckman but I really think we already look a better team with Jackson playing. Pickett will come good.

  14. It was great to see Nathan Jones down on the bench with the headphones on in the thick of things. He was clearly still engaged and elated with the win. That's a healthy sign of good culture.

  15. It's already worse than 2017. In 2017 we didn't have to rely on any other team in the last round except ourselves.

  17. We got Jackson, Pickett and Rivers out of our last draft. I'd say that was a clear win. Well done Jason Taylor.

  18. This is exactly what I posted previously. Punch a bloke in the head, but don’t concuss him or break his jaw and you can get off with a fine. Tackle a bloke and cause a concussion and you get 4 weeks, if you are a no name player. That is a joke.

  19. No. We cost our own season.

  20. Another free kick, another goal to the pies but the ones they aren’t paying are unbelievable. Pendlebury just dropped it in a tackle. FMD

  21. Not in my opinion. It will happen because removing Jack from stoppages where he regularly fights over the same ball as his team mates, fails to take the first option and tries to barrel the ball forward at whatever cost, means there will be a predictability to our ball movement from stoppage, but an unpredictability on what happens in stoppage (ie Jack won't fight over the ball and then get tackled). The midfield needs to work far better together. Oliver and Petracca have shown they can do this. Harmes, Brayshaw and Oliver have shown they can play together as a cohesive and balanced midfield that can defend and strongly attack. I don't think we need Jack and we don't need to replace what he brings to our midfield.

  22. I like Viney and don't want him to go, but hypothetically if he came to the conclusion he wanted out then this is what I'd be trying to do. He's a RFA, so I'd be telling him we're going to match and then look to trade with Geelong, in a similar way they did for Danger. They are pretty good at that sort of stuff. Currently Geelong have draft picks 11 (from GC), 14 (from WC) and their own at 15. So I'd propose we trade Viney along with the Hawks 2nd this year and our 1st next year for picks 14 & 15 plus their 2nd and either Narkle or Cockatoo. Essentially it'd be Viney, pick 22 and next years 1st for 14, 15 & 34 plus either Narkle or Cockatoo. We get more than what we would from the compo formula for Viney (I'd say he'd be end of 1st, which is 20 depending on other deals), but have to make a bet on next year, then get in a player who would suit our needs but seems surplus to Geelong, while giving up them a significant upgrade in the 2nd round this year. We then wouldn't be impacted if we go after Williams.

  23. Freo are playing super football atm, if this game was at Metricon or the Gabba i would lean towards WB. This game just happens to be in Cairns in those wet slippery conditions and there will be bucket loads of pressure on the dogs with all eyes on this game.

  24. Fallen away this year Turning 32 No longer dominating Hawks time trials List cuts would force him out, exactly why we shouldn't either No thank you Jack Gunston, on the other hand...

  25. 26. He can't play defence. When he was back there it was too much galloping and bombing with no plan. He's not a great kick and not a great one-on-one defender. He's got what it takes to be a decent small forward but he struggles to keep himself involved for four quarters. He's a good lead, a good mark, a good set shot, and last night showed a decent crumber. But he doesn't seem to be in the right spots enough and so goes missing for long periods. The fact he's getting games right now when others aren't is a good sign for him, but I'm not confident of his long-term future with the club.

  27. Careful what you wish for. Many on here are doing the obvious Looking at Jacks faults And not his strengths. Can I remind You of three of our best wins in the last 4 seasons being Eagles in Round 14 Jacks inspiration was heroic in getting us across the line. He was Easily in our Best 3 in both the Elim and Semi Finals wins vs Cats and Hawks after a long injury lay off. I can't see who in our Club can replace his physicality and agression. Yes he is selfish and I was not pleased agsin last night about this part of his game. But what rules are our mids set to play with? It all comes back to team football and first option and might I say kicking in his right foot more as he is pinged immediately as left side very dominant.

  28. The dashing runs were worked out very quickly by opposition coaches The other winger?

  29. The main reason, I don't want him to go, is that Geelong get exactly what they need to replace their A grade inside mid, Selwood, without having to spend even 5 minutes outside the 8. I can't stand that club

  30. Ess are setting themselves to win next week: This week they left out Hooker (omitted) and Hurley (injured but not on their injury list) and didn't bring in Francis, Laverde or Bellchambers who were all 'Test'. Wouldn't be surprised to see the majority of them come in next week. They lost 20% of their membership this year and will be keen to end the season on a high note - that means our scalp. They will give it all they have and we need to be ready. Can't mark it down as a win for us.

  31. When you are coming off a loss or two, all recruiters look shocking. Certainly the decision to draft another ruckman (Jackson) when you have the best in the game seemed strange at the time, but given we now know that Jackson has the mobility to play as a key forward, then it doesn't seem strange and looks like a wise choice - particularly as we traded out of the tall draft of 2018 when the Kings were on offer. I also was critical (sight unseen) of the need for another really small forward (Pickett) for a list that already had five small forwards (Spargo, ANB, Bedford, Hunt, Chandler), but once I saw that Kossie had explosive pace that only Hunt could match, then I was happy to accept the overkill in the quest for this role. And Rivers more than compensates for overlooking talented local Hayden Young, whose debut year for Fremantle has not really gone to plan for them. On what he's done so far, Rivers is our find of the year. So Taylor gets a huge thumbs up at the draft table last year, even if his 2018 year was pretty average. Clearly we won't have high picks this year so I just hope for two things. 1) Under no circumstances should we be drafting another small forward - we have more than enough and in Pickett we hopefully have one that develops into a star. 2) We draft at least one mobile tall - I accept that this will be highly speculative but we need a new project tall. Petty fits that description as well, should he get back on the park. The other draft picks should be best available and ideally mix grunt, speed and kicking skills.

  32. Totally agree. The last one was infuriating given where the match was at. They didn't even have a replay of it. And to make things worse, soon after they were showing goody talking to fritsch on the bench in the little break for no reason. The other thing that did my head in is all rhe talking and conversation between darcy when the ball is in motion. Call the bloody game!

  33. I really hope someone at the club can work out how to maximise his talent because he has a lot of x-factor about him that is worth building around. I didn't mind the way he played on the weekend - he was dangerous when he got the ball inside 50 (and kicked an excellent goal and almost kicked another one in a similar fashion) and occasionally made his way to half back to help out. As another poster mentioned in the kick-ins thread, he provided a great option late in the game on the opposite wing but May ignored him. I think he has value as a medium marking and crumbing forward option, who can pinch hit around stoppages to provide an extra outside player - so long as he's given the licence to do that. I was watching his highlights reels from 2016 and 2019 the other day and thought, "Damn, this is exactly the kind of player we need!"

  35. I don't rate his approach and I don't rate his intelligence. I think we have two of the best midfielders we've had in my 33 years in Oliver and Petracca, and we shouldn't be worried IMV about who runs through there with them. I also think Harmes and Brayshaw are legitimate and complimenting mids to Clarry and Trac. I think we need to sort out defensive transition, ball use out of the middle, add an extra runner to compliment Langdon and work out what the hell we're doing with our forwardline. Having Jackson alongside Weideman will give us more mobility and having Petty fit gives us a swing man that either goes forward or goes back, enabling Tomlinson to shift up onto a wing if needed. I think our stoppage set ups have become worse as the year has gone on. I think we need a new midfield coach to get some fresh eyes on these set ups and identify the best midfield mix. I reckon we've offered him a contract, but he doesn't like the figure, but I can only speculate. I reckon we've offered him what we think is reasonable for a player of his limited abilities and are resigned to the fact that if he thinks he's better than our offer, we need to let him go.

  36. Yes your right 1 is a man with years of senior experience at WAFL level, in his second AFL season and the other is a 18 year old in his first AFL season. You have NFI

  37. If we make it at their expense, we'll have ended the year with the same number of wins and a higher percentage. Our losses may stick out like a sore thumb to us, but evidently if they miss out we'll have had the better year overall.

  38. If the AFL is serious about concussion, he should get weeks for his supposed spoiling attempt where he just belted Gawn in the back of the head in I think the second quarter. Gawn was down for quite a while after it and Mumford was nowhere near the ball. It's ridiculous how commentators just laugh at these punches to the head in a marking attempt. 'Making him earn it' rubbish. It is the accumulation of all those smaller hits that really add up, not just the ones where players get knocked out.

  39. He is a beauty and playing well for his first season in an average side. speaking of comparisons, what about Lewis Jetta in his first season kicking 19 behinds before his first goal. His skills are not bad now??? although frustrating, he will get his radar right soon and be a sharp shooter, I have not doubt

  40. I felt really sorry for him, he looked sad all game, i genuinely hope he is ok. I think he has a go every time he plays, was one of our better players last year, 21 goals. I hope he gets another year, but i think he is gone. Although i could find 10 players i would rather delist before him.

  42. Don't know specifically, but you'd think they would have at least opened up the discussions and/or offers. From what I've heard via both rumour and reasonably 'in the know' people; there's a bit of a cultural disconnect with Jack and some of the younger players. He's everything we think from the outside: hard worker, demanding, serious, but he's not a great communicator or what you'd call a 'people person' so the dynamic just isn't quite working in that way. I think we need that kind of mentality at our club personally, bit like Michael Jordan if you've watched 'The Last Dance', but I'm not sure who it's up to to make it work properly. I'm torn about him leaving. I can see how it potentially helps the midfield mix. I can also see how it might help our skills in the middle (I've been highly critical of his delivery inside 50 in the past), but we're also a club that struggles in a big way with consistency of effort and 'ruthlessness' which are both things I think Viney brings.

  43. I haven't gone through this whole thread, but there is a lot of hate for Melksham on here. He has been playing a defensive midfield role the last 2 weeks and did a great job on Taranto last night who figured to be a key inside mid for the Giants with Coniglio out. Add to that he is just about our best kick in a team with poor foot skills, there is no way I can entertain dropping him. Stick him on Merrett next week, and we'll be good.

  44. 3 votes? Did they do a Slobbo and get tanked at a pub when watching then write up the game. He was no way better than May or Petracca

  45. Interestingly, we now can’t finish lower than 10th (unless there is a percentage battering next week). So the pick we gave up in the trade with North will be 9 or higher. 2-3 academy players very likely to be top 5 or 6, pushing it out to at least 11. Looking like astute trading in the end.

  47. Working at home and the pandemic has put a lot of strain on the mental health of many people. Personally I'm really looking forward to a long weekend, even if all that means is I can sleep in a touch, and read a book in my back yard. The GF parade is just an excuse to have the day off. It used to be Show Day. But the benefits of the day off go further than the parade itself.

  48. Ryan also debuted at the age of 21. Pickett is only going to get stronger with better endurance and composure within a game plan. To play at your best under last nights pressure shows a clear talent who can play to the occasion. I look forward to seeing where he takes it.
