  1. What a fantastic post, you've clearly articulated why any whinging about racism or oppression by white people is utterly ludicrous. Being called names doesn't hold a candle to institutional discrimination, oppression and in a lot of cases, genocide.

  5. Agree, but Picket had more scoring shots then Weightman in his debut. I'm just shaking my head that people are already calling this trade a bust because Weightman kicked 2 goals last night. I watched the whole game and besides his 2 goals he did nothing. Didn't even lay a tackle last night at all. Pickett nearly took mark of the century against Richmond but you won't hear anything about that from our own supporters.

  7. Coaching staff had to adapt last week with Tmac going down. Kudos. They have been stubborn so far this year. I'm hoping they can feel confident enough to win this with the 22 selected. I'm happy with the selection of Jackson now i think about it. I'm not sure the Carlton game was a realistic litmus test. Marvel is a tricky first test for a player, no crowd with the roof closed. It can be difficult to read the ball the first few times you play there. Also the 2nd half was putrid by all. My take is that Jackson will play deep, Weideman will be the leading target. Jackson's height will worry them if he gets a run and jump around the goal square (Not a license to bomb). Both Weid and Jacko can ruck. Either of them will ruck forward of 75m leaving Maxy a kick behind. The fact that Weid and Jacko can Ruck around the ground also gives the coaches a choice of resting Maxy in the forward line, in the hole in defence or time on the bench. Gives us flexibility and Fritta a license to roam. We should be fitter and smash them around the contest, if we can spread and kick the ball better again this week we win. Bennell, AVB, Hannan, Omac will be fitter and more confident after a few runs now. We turn it over like v Tigers/Cats we lose anyway so selections for mine are the right ones.

  13. You have history on your side. Europe, for example, is full of these ethnic and religious prejudices and hatred, mostly of 'foreign- speaking' neighbours, but almost universally of Jews. It's the ugly side of the human situation. What I find disturbing, is that the notion of the 'inferior' or 'bad' other seems to be ingrained in all of us. I note how quickly prejudice and misinformation about the Chinese has risen to the surface recently, how quickly we condemn Muslims, how easy it has been to ignore the massive injustice we have perpetrated on so-called 'Boat People'. Most pernicious, is the condescending and almost lethal attitude to the original inhabitants of this country called Australia. I have encountered and heard so much racist bilge and bulldust about them and nowadays I lose friends and make enemies by asking the bulldusters to question the attitudes they were born into, to question the 'history' which mostly distorts the real story of these people.

  14. 6 tackles and 3 score involvements vs 0 tackles and running around packs waiting for a lolly? Kozzie>>>>weightman. That haircut could only get a run in the Western suburbs

  15. It's not just the media reporting on racist idiots like Hanson. It's the medias reporting and agenda in general. I mean look at the commercial medias subtle and more often blatant racist reporting regarding "African gangs" "Muslim terrorists" "Aboriginal bludgers" etc etc etc It's not just racist agendas they drive, but they are often the most abhorrent.

  17. Apologies for piggy-backing on your excellent contribution - I'll just toss in a micro-example that I've kept for myself as a kind of touchstone. Amongst the general mess of abuse I (we all?) cop at random times in life, I have actually been quite viciously and even menacingly racially abused on a train. Thing is - it was by an obviously crazy person and I could walk away in full confidence that it was a freak occurance and that if things had spiraled out of control I would have all manner of institutions backing me up and could realistically assume the sympathy and assistance of the next person I meet the moment I'm clear of the scene. And in that thought lies the difference. The clarification for me was about having the humility to recognise that even though that was seriously alarming and unpleasant, the depth of it is nothing like what people have to navigate when they can't be confident of that institutional and social support. I'm of the 'unlikely to eliminate racism in my lifetime' perspective, but I see the goal of reconciliation (as the most pressing example) as being to reach the point where the experience of racism for Indigenous Australians is much the same as mine. "That was a crazy person, and that was upsetting, but I don't really have to think about it any more now that the moment is over."

  18. Scully needs to stick tackles and hit targets at a minimum. Melbourne are a pretty physical side and with 3 ex Dees playing for us, I expected the game to have a fair bit of niggle in it. Melbourne are little like North to me; love to get real physical regardless of where the game is at and sometimes to the detriment of their movement. Looks like we get to see Scully squib a few more contests! Patton looks out of shape too, body is wrecked, move him on. (Selection) Very frustrating. We continue to play Henderson and Scully. Gawn has constantly pantsed BB (McEvoy) over his career, and we have no one even close to Gawn's height apart from Ceglar on our entire list but if he's injured so be it. Hendo, Scully , Smith and Morrison in same team. Melbourne have nothing to match it. If we can't beat Melbourne then serious questions need to be asked of the club across the board. At the moment I'd settle for Melbourne's game plan, it's manic and not very effective but at least it looks like they are doing something. If we get trounced by Melbourne, then I would hope for a clean out and just play the younger guys. The Scully experiment is done now. He can run all day sure, but he is just about the softest player I have seen put on a hawks jumper. Melbourne can’t score either so we are in for another eye sore. Get ready for “worst game of all time” media reports post game. The loser of this game is going to cop it. Melbourne are super slow and not skilful. They have Gawn who is awesome. But aside from him they are not a good side. I think we will win. But the score line might challenge that Richmond Swans beauty. Viney, Oliver, Petracca, Brayshaw, Harmes is a very good midfield. May and Lever. They've got talent everywhere. That midfield has terrible skills. Viney, Oliver and Brayshaw are accumulators but burn merchants. They are not damaging. Petracca can be dangerous - until half time when he runs out of puff every week. Terribly unfit but talented. Gawn is quite easily the best player in either side and will tear Ceglar to shreds though. Hasn’t done much yet but have you seen some of the searing pressure that young Pickett puts on? It will be an interesting matchup between him and dare I say Dimma. Hawks need a smaller backline. Especially against Melbourne who have no key forwards. Petracca has been tremendous this season. No running out of puff and is putting in four quarter efforts. He's a different player now. The rest are tough nut hackers though, much like Mitchell, Worpel and to a lesser extent JOM. Their midfield is the equal of ours in terms of hardness (JOM, Mitch, Shiels and Worpel = Viney, Oliver, Harmes and Brayshaw). They are using their most dynamic player in the middle and he's been huge this season. We need to throw Wingard back in there or around the packs at least to match it. They've also got Gawn who will destroy Ceglar, and have some KPF targets to kick to. Weids And McDonald have played like 2 and a half good games since the end of 2018. Fritsch caused our defence issues last time.

  20. Scully's career was always destined for the toilet when he was offered $1 million a year after 2 seasons in the league. Accept it and play with the burden of pressure. Decline it and you're that "guy who turned down $1 million". I do believe he'd have been a much better player had he stayed at Melbourne. If not for a Sheedy vendetta, GWS may have thrown their coin elsewhere. Anyway, Dees by 12. Goals. Seriously, we should pansy them. Much better on paper.

  25. Bruce is now a comical announcer. He's truly hopeless. His fawning for Weightman was on full display. It was a good debut, however, they overlooked his poor kicking - other than his great first goal. Small forwards can vary greatly and Pickett is more the type we need. Just on McAvaney. Try listening to him commentate and count the number of times he asks a question after he makes a statement. You won't believe how often it happens and nor will you be able to correctly remember the final tally. Here's a taste of what I'm talking about: He's truly the pits and you'll never listen to his commentary the same way again. And he does it EVERY single game.

  26. They are professional manipulators they prey on the weaknesses of human nature to make scapegoats of minorities and blame someone else for the problems facing society. Politicians like Dutton are expert at it and assisted by Murdoch and Co. These people are too well resourced to be doing it unintentionally. These people often use the fig leaf of claiming to stand up for the right to free speech and that these sort of 'robust' conversations need to be had, but that's just BS cover for their racisim and wolf whistling. Unless you are talking about combating racisim it's self, to be genuinely look to solve problems of youth viloence, or terrorism etc, there is absolutely no need to bring race into the conversation if you are looking to have a productive objective debate. Bringing in race into the conversation in a negative context reinforces prejudices and us and them attitudes.

  27. It completely depends on how it comes out. I held the view for years that it was important to let loose at the footy, but it depends how it manifests. You can just as easily release pent up emotions by exercising and channelling frustration into healthier pursuits. For years, I found friends didn't want to come along to games with me and my wife rarely wanted to either. I was brought up with my father screaming and shouting, and it rubbed off. Over the past 3 or so years I've made a concerted effort to calm the [censored] down a bit because I don’t like the aggression that comes out. I still shout a bit but nowhere near as much. Letting loose is fine but there are constructive ways of letting loose that don't impact as heavily on others around you. That said, if you can't raise your voice at the footy like some people seem to think in the MCC, then you may as well stay at home and watch it on the TV.

  29. Pates l have Kayo so I can pause the stream but I'm sure you can do the following even with free to air with modern smart TVs. Step 1. Mute Bruce and all the other tripe on ch7. (it is now horrendous and ruins the game) Step 2. Listen to your choice of radio through the AFL app on your phone and play thru your Bluetooth speaker. Step 3 Pause the stream/live TV until it is in sync with the radio call. There were about 7 radio stations to choose from, even WA or SA stations for the masochists. I can't tell you how much more enjoyable an experience it is.

  30. I did too. I also wanted Green or Young instead of Jackson. Rivers was one of the two I wanted once we got the 20s pick however. I think we made the wrong choices with the high picks, but it’s in the past now and I support the players that are now in red and blue. Pickett is very exciting and shows glimpses of greatness. Doggies are probably the best team to watch in 2020. They win contested ball but also have a good fast brand played through the corridor. They have genuine stars and X factor. Good to see them beating some of the less like able teams!

  33. The R factor is a little illusory but in simple terms it's a measure of infection progression. If Victoria had a R factor of 1.5 we would be in big trouble in a short while. At an R rate of 1.1 a thousand cases becomes 25000 cases in 60 days https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/05/covid-19-what-is-the-r-number/ By lockdowns you depress the R rate simply by limiting the exposure each infected person has to others. Without lockdowns the R rate of this virus is estimated to be between 2-2.5 and by some as high as 6.(enormous numbers) BTW measles has a R rate much higher than this virus but vaccines prevent infection. Stay safe all.

  36. I found it quite amusing in Max's captain's run podcast that he suggested that Oscar has asked for a portion of Lever's pay, since Lever only seems to play well when he's in the side. Lol. Came up partly in the context of that toss Adelaide club administrator having a go at Lever's pay. Max also had a freindly dig at Oscar that he was asking around trying to find our how to reopen his deactivated Twitter account to bask in some rare praise from MFC supporters after a good performance. Does make me think that when Melbourne play the Lions at Carrara stadium next week, I'm going to try and get down and shout some encouragement for big O Mac from the stands (noticed in the GC game last week that one of the benifits of small crowds is that individual supporters voices travel well). I think Oscar deserves some external positive reinforcement comming his way and I actually think he could have quite a high ceiling for us if he builds some continuity and confidence again.

  37. A brilliant doco. At my work we all watched together during reconciliation week. It is clearly shows what racism exists but more pertinately for the discussion in this thread what systemic racism is (and the distinction between the two) and it's pernicious impact.

  38. I'm watching the replay this morning, I forgot how arsey all the Suns 1st quarter goals were! All 3 were kicked from relatively wild snaps Weller's was the most conventional being a kick from 50 out on the boundary. We were reamed by the umps as well, multiple ridiculous calls went against us, none moreso than the 50 against Melksham and the non holding the ball call in our goal square.

  39. I like Tom as the high CHF role with Weids at FF, it seems more natural to both of them. Bit sad the TMac got his eye injury as I think it’ll take a couple of games for them to get gelling together properly. Would absolutely love to see Weids get 3+ goals this weekend and have a cracker.

  46. I’m not exactly sure where you get garbage from, we won last week so it stands to reason minimal changes would be made. What makes you hot on Smith coming in? Brown I can understand, more experienced body would’ve been my preferred choice but I also recognise the LJ was close to plucking a lot of marks in his first game, he may have had the jitters. I’m ok with them giving him another crack at it, and LJ can provide Max with some much needed relief.

  48. I have always believed that going to the football is good for one's mental health, win, lose or draw, because of the opportunity to yell and scream during the game. It seems intuitive to me that primal screaming helps the mind by releasing pent-up emotions. Turns out I may have been on to something. Perhaps I'll try screaming as suggested (but when no-one else is at home. It might scare the kiddies.) To anyone struggling at the moment, whether it is because you are stuck at home or have lost your job, or for any other reason, please know that Demonlanders care. I'm no expert in mental health, but don't be scared to ask a professional for help.

  49. Thanks for posting this 'Dee King', I heard this mentioned today. I think it was the Chief Health officer or maybe the health minister. My partner, who can't stand football said it is a good thing your club is doing. I think so...if clubs are going to talk community then they need to act it. Hopefully the good karma bus will treat us well in the future.
