  1. didn't appear to achieve a whole lot in his time at mfc and wouldn't want him back again but having a mfc supporters voice on the mcc board is probably a positive

  2. 100% agree with this. Trengove was the pick of the bunch in my eyes, and all draft rankings had Scully and Trengove as undisputed number 1&2. Our issue wasn't getting the picks wrong, it was development. Trengove wasn't slow pre-foot injury. His draft class 20m sprint was 2.95 seconds, which was in the top 20% of underage players tested for speed. Statistically, Trengove and Martin were near identical for their first two seasons. If anything, Trengove was more impressive as he had the same output as Martin whilst also being a leader in a struggling club with a poor environment and little support around him. He was the closest thing I'd seen to James Hird at a similar age - he was excelling all over the ground and oozed leadership and class. Once he got made the youngest AFL captain in history and suffered injuries, his output dropped off and statically he actually became worse than his debut year and never recovered. It's proof that injuries and poor development meant he didn't get the best out of himself. I truly believe had he not suffered those debilitating injuries and had better development by the club, he would've become a great of the club and likely one of the best players in the game. There have been rare cases of poor drafting - Lucas Cook for example - but reality is the main issue for our club is development, and we still haven't got development right decades later. Guys like Petracca should be stars of the game instead of just flashes.

  3. With WA allowing groups of 10 to congregate, WCE and Freo are changing their training to work around this regulation. This means line groups can essentially work together, and train skills, coordination and motivation benefits over other teams who cannot train with others. Should the AFL stop this to allow equity, or will these teams be given an unfair leg up for the rest of this season?

  4. one assumes that if there is a Melbourne hub and an interstate hub that only the interstate teams will relocate at first. That allows for seven rounds until anyone is required to move. Please tell me they wouldn't mix the hubs from day 1 !!! As an aside I am looking forward to Essendon, Collingwood etc playing at Kardinia Park.

  5. Agreed. Leigh Matthews himself has reflected that the 'Pies were not necessarily the best team that year. But that they played their best footy at the right time of the year. In my view our biggest missed opportunity

  6. I remember when Roos came on board one of the first things he identified was our awful track record of development, we created quite a number of "good players" of the years and maybe one or two developed above their supposed raw talent, but when it came to top 10 & top 20 picks we were terrible for a long time. Look at Travis Johnston, such incredible talent, he should've been a champion for us. I even look at Cale Morton, yes he was skinny but he showed some bloody good potential in his early years. I can't go on without mentioning a certain Jack Watts, probably the most miss-managed player our club has ever had. I could run a list a mile long of players that showed they had fantastic attributes to them and they needed someone to harness that potential into a consistent footballer.

  7. How about we do a three or fourpeat starting this year and then everyone's happy. I think I could manage it.

  9. It was a really bad time in the history of the club... I know people say to move on and it's probably healthy to do that. ...but when you see people congratulating appointments, maybe they should take a look at the history and see if the appointment is deserved and based on merit.

  10. I'm with your rjay. I'll remind people of this. Howcroft was terrible this day. He failed to take responsibility of the horrendous state he and the Board he sat on left our Club. I don't like people who don't take responsibility. He was dismissive of the membership that was present that day and displayed a sense of arrogance and entitlement. It's mind numbing to me that he is again on our Board. Hopefully Glen Bartlett explains to him his role and hopefully he does it. But I find it hard to believe we couldn't have found someone better. This smells like "jobs for the boys" to me and why you'd want to remind members who have a memory and understanding of just how poor the Board he sat on was I just don't understand.

  11. I’ve spent the last 40 years desperately hoping we might get that elusive premiership. Every instinct in me as a sportsman and competitor wants Melbourne to win at all costs but as a supporter i’m worried we will win. I don’t want our first premiership in nearly 70 years having an * next to it. Do we even want to win it this year?

  14. Dropped rounds 13-15 before that comeback at Windy Hill. Those losses were to also rans St Kilda, North Melbourne and Geelong. The North Melbourne loss was unforgivable and absolutely decimated our percentage. 10.13.73 to 31.14.200.

  16. The epitome of a hard draw for the Dees, that year. The way it paned out. Disappointments, Dees. All the work Barassi and Jordan, Barry Richardson, [censored] Seddon, et al., all did, to rebuild the whole club, only to find out that, 1987, '88, 1990, and other seasons, amounted to not a lot. That that group did not come away with some AFL Silverware, is almost an insult to that group of fine footy folk.

  18. Spot on, Re Essendon game, they kicked a goal at the 10 minute mark of the last to go 5 goals up and we won running away. Still remains my biggest disappointment to this day 1990. Great last quarter on youtube if you can find it.

  19. Yup, that for me was definitely our best (worst?) missed opportunity. Pretty much everyone inside the club at the time were super confident that we'd see off Hawthorn in those back to back games and then getting the week off courtesy of the West Coast - Collingwood draw set everything up beautifully. Then we failed to turn up at Waverley against the Eagles. 1990 was a free hit with no dominant force that year, unlike our two recent Grand Final appearances. I think it might also have been the year that big bad Billy Bennett kicked six at Windy Hill to see us storm home.

  20. Stick to footy, Martian. You needlessly brought politics and history you clearly have a very narrow knowledge of into this. I hope your knowledge of footy is a bit less sheep like.

  22. We shot ourselves in the foot dropping games against bottom teams which was a consistent theme during that era & all other finals campaigns . Getting a double chance is a major thing eg 2000 we played a qualifying final then into a prelim & Gf. 2018 we dropped some dumb games & should have finished 4th.

  23. Firsts, seconds and under 19s is a model that worked very well for a long period of time although with drafting under 19 players can no longer be tied to a team beyond their under 19 year. In the meantime they can learn the game under a senior AFL team. Change the system so that each team can have only 35 (or any other number) on their official lists but players can be readily added or removed from their lists using the seconds and under 19s(temporarily) if warranted. Enhance the appeal of the seconds and the under 19s with club loyalty. Who cares about u18 Dragons when you can barrack for Demons u19. In the barren years after '64 watching the seconds and u19s play in finals and even win flags was a lift to our spirits. They were Demon flags.

  24. How Scully is not top 5 is beyond me. Other than looking at the ankle injury 18 months ago. His output over nearly a decade has been top 5. Also, Richmond were lucky to hold on to Dusty when they let him go to GWS and inspect facilities. Fact is Melbourne would not have held on to Fyfe (Lake Grace, Trucking & Surfing pull) or Martin if we landed them. The GWS and Gold Coast anomaly cost us Scully. He accepted what 99.9999999% of us would have accepted. When Stynes looked at him and demanded a guarantee, if this occurred, was ridiculous to ask from a kid who had the deal of a lifetime. Players do return to clubs (Ablett etc...), but the way MFC supporters and the club treated the Scully saga was self-limiting potentially, and an absolute embarrassment. Geelong supporters thank Christ were 3 steps above us. The money bags thing was funny for the first game; but the continual jilted lover, traitor, liar-to-Jimmy's-face thing, is absolutely juvenile and absurd; and really reflects the veil of negativity and woe-is-me that transcends the club into its' supporter base.

  25. I was surprised Trengove was appointed joint captain as he was slow by then unfortunately. I remember posting that he might not even be best 22, he'd dropped his speed so much.

  27. 'dt'... you must have missed the news on little-rocket man, Kim Jong-Un.? I heard he was firing of ICBM's, over the Sea of Japan.?
    1 point
  28. Well, China is marching south thru the Sth China sea, bullying other Sth Asian nations on the seas. And building war facilities, on atolls in the sth china sea. Now we see, Kim Jong-Un's mysterious disappearance, and China sending a medical team in to kill him off, err, save him? I believe the USA is far more transparent, than China is, currently. Apart from the US's involvement in Iraq... and the recent middle east wars.

  29. I think the AFL are banking on the hubs being a relatively short term arrangement ...say eight weeks ...and not the whole 16 games plus finals. Who knows...the only certainty is that they are desperate for money. The NRL are planning for players who live locally to remain at home. I cannot see why the interstate NRL players couldn't rent an apartment if that better suits their family situation.

  30. You sure you don't mean the USA? I haven't noticed China or North Korea taking anyone over, nor have they dropped a bomb on anyone, nor fired a shot. More than I can say about the USA.

  31. Hubs, hubs and more hubs. I’m really struggling to see how a scenario like this is going to work at the moment. Apparently most AFL clubs are against players’ families staying with them in the hubs. Sloane admitted in an interview the other night it would be very difficult to leave his wife and 7 month old behind in SA with no support network. Good to see a candid response, I’m sure there are other players with the same feelings as Sloane whilst others would be ready to kick a ball tomorrow anywhere. Could well be in the minority but I’m not missing the footy as much as I thought I would. Might just be all these ideas reminding me we are not back to normal yet.

  34. No player is truly on the edge of a return until they have done match practice or played vfl. can't see him holding up under those conditions to be honest but will be rapt if he does. his hiring is starting to feel more like a PR exercise than anything else

  35. On first looks, this makes a lot more sense, than the AFL taking control of the VFL some years back. Which IMO is a disaster. AFL, ffs, set the VFL independently free, to work their way back into the local communities. The loss of the VFL would be a disaster for footy. The AFL isn't in a war with everyone. It doesn't have to behave like Nth Korea or China. Taking over everything in sight. IF the AFL were ever to collapse, I'd want the VFL still established, to carry on.

  36. Hi all, Thanks to COVID-19, there has been much clearing out of various cupboards at home. Included in the clearing out are NINE VHS of Melbourne games from 1998. I am guessing they are all winning games and include games against Nth Melb, St Kilda, Port Ade, Ade, Carlton, Hawthorn, Freo, Richmond and Brisbane So they are free to anyone who wishes to collect them - I am bayside Melbourne. 37. It's interesting people remember Trenners pre-injury as being slow anyway, I certainly don't. I'm not saying he was going to win any 10m sprints but I felt he had enough power out of his first 5 steps to get away quick enough. I remember a tigers game in particular (I think it was his second year) where he was a powerhouse. He had the attributes to be a gun, he lost them from the injuries (and I also join the "miss-management" group as well). Scully was always seen as number one, and really we saw enough to suggest it was the right move. For me the debate was always Trenners vs Dusty, I think we went for better character over raw talent (not that JT was talentless). Nobody picked Fyfe to become the player he has.

  38. Did we really? Every club passed on Fyfe not just us. Martin is a miss but Gawn was an exceptional pick up.

  39. He is the kind of player who knows how to accumulate as he has showed at Fremantle and a 30 plus possy in his first game for us. His kicking skills need a bit of polishing and has the time on his to correct it. He is a professional and trains hard, a real goer and hope he can fulfill his dreams out our great club.

  40. Maybe you were thinking of QLD v Vic 7-11 Jan 1966. Vic needed 387 runs in 2nd innings, 265 on the last day, after only scoring 130 in 1st innings. Watson opened with Redpath and were there on day 4 both on 61. Watson eventually out for 109 and Redpath 180 to win by 3 wickets.

  43. I'm not qualified to sit on a board 'sat'... In all seriousness and not to get into a slanging match with you. I would like to know why the board allowed Garry Lyon to come in as a consultant to the club. Garry was a great player but had no qualification to take up this role. He's never coached at a club or been involved in any other role but as a player. From the outside looking in it seems that the will of a sick president over rode that of common sense. To me that is a failure at board level and Russell was part of that board. Does this qualify him to be a good appointment on another sporting board? It might seem stupid to you but this still really gets to me...there may have been good reasons at the time but from a supporters view all I can see is failure to make the right call and we're all still paying for it.

  45. I wonder how much external pressure there would have been if we'd lost to GWS. Forget that Perth away and a grand finalist is about the hardest start you can get, the media would have sensed a story and gone for us.
