  1. So do Ruck infringements now get penalised under the Coleslaw?

  2. https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/tigers-plan-to-be-top-victorian-club-20100303-pizq.html Our players were well and truly humbled last year. A strong team with belief that they will be successful should come out and say it, rather than be fearful of failure. You can't get ahead of yourself but the idea that our players should be dwelling on last year like we need to pay some penance for it is ridiculous. After the early years of his career Cornes didn't win a thing.

  3. The MFC was very good at covering for Hogan throughout his time at Melbourne. He regularly presented them with off-ground challenges regarding his behaviour. And it's not like Freo weren't aware he had issues, which is why Bell nearly backed out at the trade table. While the club would have been happy to retain a fully committed Hogan they knew what they were doing by letting him go.

  4. I don't often agree with Cornes in fact we have a saying in my household; "Always bet on the guy that Kane Cornes picks against". In this case he is spot on. Particularly when he is talking about this stupid Pre Season Doco. Whoever signed off on this should be sacked. I couldn't give a rats how good the quality of the video is with the slow mo and the close ups and the inspirational music. The fact is we haven't COME BACK FROM ANYWHERE. TO HELL AND BACK. Where is the back in this narrative? If we win the [censored] lot this year then by all means make you doco with slow mo and inspirational music but until then do all your talking on the footy field. Yeah sell some hope but sell it on the [censored] footy field.

  5. I literally come to DL to find things out. It's way more informed and way more accurate than 90% of journos. I have no doubt Cornes doesn't believe most of what he says. He just knows his job depends on ratings so the more ill informed and antagonistic he is the better. He has no idea what he's talking about most of the time and doesn't care. He's absolute rubbish. There's a lot of people on here still angry about last season who don't seem to care why it happened. I understand and accept that the overwhelming number of injuries derailed 2019. I don't need or want to rehash it any further. There's been about 25 changes in the FD from Burgess to Richo to Dr's Physio etc We've got Lever May Langdon Tomlinson and maybe some others who make our list better than 2020. That's good enough for me to be optimistic about 2020. Cornes wouldn't have a clue about any of this. Memberships are running close to 10% below last season. I applaud the Club for being proactive both in the media and in doing Hell & Back to get the members back on board. I find Cornes comments which for the 2nd time recently are directed at the Club trying to drive memberships so utterly out of touch with the reality of AFL Clubs that he is ludicrous. Memberships are oxygen. Come on people. Move on from 2019 lets get behind the Club for 2020. Agreeing with Cornes! Are you kidding.

  6. I disagree completely. In a perfect world we would have the luxury of not needing to overhype but in reality we have to do anything we can to sell as many memberships as possible. If we have another terrible season, won't have mattered whether we were quiet or loud now. Have to do everything we can to retain as much of the membership base as possible or we'll just lose more ground.

  9. A couple of points. A lot of commentary seems to be along the lines of "finally - we've taken a risk on elite talent instead of always taking the safe option". I disagree with this for 2 reasons. Firstly, I think we've taken our fair share of left-field recruiting gambles in recent years (e.g., Jurrah, Wonnaeamirri, Clark, Oliver) - they just mostly haven't worked out for one reason or another. Secondly, I can't see how recruiting Bennell is a particularly big risk - we haven't invested anything other than a rookie spot, so it's a classic low risk/ potentially high reward situation IMO. That's just astute recruiting. Let's be honest - if barracking for a footy club was purely about winning games and premierships, we all would have called it quits a long time ago. Players that defy the odds, comeback stories, redemption stories - they're the stories that capture our imagination and make footy great. Both us and Harley are due for some luck in this department - fingers crossed he plays some good footy for us (ideally in September, but no pressure!)

  10. The Age is reporting that Richmond and Rance have come to an agreement to pay out part of his salary that he would have otherwise been paid. One-sixth of quite a bit: Alex Rance leaves $1.4 million on the table The result is that Richmond now have buckets of $$$'s available under the salary cap for this year and next. If this is allowed by the AFL, then you can be sure that Sydney and Collingwood will exploit the same avenue for their 10 and 7 year signings, when they can't make it to the end of their contracts!

  11. In the past I would have agreed with Cornes but you know what. It's time we came out and had a red hot go and put it all on the table. We really don't risk being a laughing stock as many already think we are. I agree with you 'Dee'...make a statement and back it up. I reckon we're good enough...

  14. I’m not too sure what the ‘rort’ is. If a club parts with a player before the contract ends and the player takes a lower exit fee then the club should be able to use any savings back into its salary cap.

  15. Maybe I'm different and grew up in an era when if you got one newspaper article a week on your team you felt lucky. I personally think there is too much media. It's all I could do to bring myself to watch the Michael Hibberd video and I knew what he was going to say. Goody's pressers during the season require large doses of concentration to avoid going to sleep (this is not a criticism of Goody, frankly the less we give the oppositon the happier I am). I could count on one hand the interesting video's I seen from anyone since seasons end and they would probably be Burgo giving his none too complete injury report. I understand it's different for everyone but it just seems that no matter what we do it's not good enough for some. And I'd also be interested to see how we compared with other AFL clubs, not those from different sports. How many clubs had an information night at the end of their seasons? And perhaps the Club think they have better places to spend their limited resources. Perhaps they think the information provided on Demonland is so good anything much they add is unnecessary. I'm with Lord Nev. Seems if we produce stuff it's just fluff and if we don't it's no good. Seventeen days to go, I for one can't wait.

  17. The Club needs to get mentally tough and not jump the gun. “To Hell & Back” is a dangerous road right now. We haven’t come back from anywhere yet. I agree with Cornes 100% Just shut up and work To Hell & Back should come out after Round 23 if we are inside the 8 and not before.

  19. He may never play again, but he's the most naturally talented player on our list. I've said it before, he's a better footballer than Tim Kelly. But yes, it means little if those legs don't mend.

  23. I don't mind the threads that start with a link to a dees media story as a rule. But I reckon we should ban using anything Cornes says as a topic starter.. I don't mind string opinions but his MO is so transparently click bait rubbish that we do footy journalism a disservice even reading him.

I look forward to the meeting where coles tells Gil they won’t pay the last 3 months coz the logo was one shade of red from what they wanted

  28. He got it from the same place Hardie got the info that MFC signing Bennell was “unlikely”. His arse. I don’t even need to be from WA to know the reputation these guys have for never letting the truth get in the way of a good story. Toss in Karl Langdon and you have the perfect trifecta of tiny WA fish trying not to get eaten in the small pond, battling for relevance.

  29. I suspect as earlier mentioned it might have been backloaded. Interesting though... Gary Ablett's contract at the Suns was reportedly front loaded but no mention of him having to repay for that last season. Seems that it may only work one way unless the contracts are getting more specific about these eventualities.

  30. "Crikey! Buddy's just retired and the mil we still owe him is stuck on our salary cap!" "Don't worry about it. We'll pay him out 50 grand and after Gil's signed off on it, we'll make him game day ambassador to the coterie group on 950 grand. Easy."

  34. Clearly Melbourne knew what they were doing when they agreed to trade him with a year still to go on his contract. Some supporters should have a bit more faith in the club's list management decisions and take pause to reflect the next time they're inclined to wail like excitable banshees.

  41. Bennell, despite the injuries and related layoffs, has shown the MFC something special in his training and debutant presence as a Demon. He will make many commentaries appear as past exercises in sucking lemons. Good onyer, Harley - resume your rightful career in the RednBlue and take us to that Premiership! Wishing you every success ...

  42. He and Hardie have a show where they rabbit on over rubbish calls all the time.. you don’t live in WA so you’re not exposed to it but as usual you’ll cherry pick an internet article here and there to pack your pipe. Hardie called only three days ago that we wouldn’t sign Bennell, Hagdorn has made some ridiculous calls over the years. He’s won an award? In today’s journalism standards how is that even worthy of acknowledgement from an anonymous forum poster? LOL. Keep it going big fella.

  45. To me, the real feel-good story about Harley Bennell is that the MFC has given him a chance to make an AFL comeback - and I am really proud of our club for making this a reality.. What happens from this point on is up to Harley and really, is in the lap of the gods - but we all wish him well. If he gets to a level of fitness where he can play again - I'll be extremely happy for him. If he gets to a point where his performance gets him selected in our best 22, then i will be ecstatic for him. If he gets to the point where he actually stars in our best 22, then I will be orgasmic. However, if he breaks down during any of these stages, and has to give the game away, i'll be sad for Harley, but extremely proud of our Club for doing all it could to make Harley's dream a reality.

  47. To be fair, I think what he's suggesting here makes sense, particularly the connectivity to Richmond Station, but only if it's economically viable. He's also not the only person making these suggestions. But just because it's Eddie making the comments, many will have a knee-jerk critical reaction. If I were of that mind, I would respond by saying the other idea we should take from the Superbowl is to have all our umpires wearing black and white striped shirts. It's not actually necessary, but as it would mean Collingwood would have to change their gear, Eddie would go apoplectic which would make it worth having the inevitably pointless discussion.
