  1. How would he inherit injuries due to becoming Captain? How is this an appointment for the fans? He’s easily one of our most professional and respected from within and outside of the club. Actually, don’t feel the need to respond, I’ve read a few of your posts now.

  2. Martin is leaving us and heading back to Tassie, I hope he keeps writing. "My words about footy upon parting: you need at least two people on the AFL Commission representing grassroots footy," writes Martin Flanagan, who is heading back to Tasmania. "We’re heading into a rough, tough century. Grassroots footy is where the game’s version of climate change is occurring." https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/my-parting-advice-for-the-afl-20191227-p53n3d.html

  7. If I recall correctly, Troy pushed Trisha to safety before subsequently being swept away. Last act on earth was to save the life of another, at the expense of his own. Hero.

  8. When your the worst 4th quarter team in the league and mids don’t chase, I think fitness will make a significant difference, plus a couple of outside runners added to the team. Richo will help Goodwin! Your entitled to your opinion, I just hope your wrong! Go Demons!

  9. I had the pleasure of sitting with Martin at the footy a few years ago. (Friend of a friend.) Brilliant writer ... top bloke. I don't know whether he reads this. But if so ... all the best Martin !!

  13. His methodology is to rank Mids, Backs, Forwards & rucks. Top ranked gets 18 points worst gets 1. Add the all up to get overall ranking. His rankings for us Mids 8th Backs 13th Forwards 14th. Ruck 2nd. Add them up and get 39pts equal with Dogs at 7th, Fun exercise to do our own rankings. Our midfield ranked 8th for clearances and 5th for i50's this season. We know how many were effected by bad preseasons. Add a newly fit Petracca, AVB Langdon & Tomlinson to that midfield. I rank it 4th. Am I overrating a May & Lever led backline. I don't think so. I expect our backline to be right up there next year. My rank 4th. Forwards remain a worry. Don’t know what ranking was in 2018 when they were fit but we scored the most points for the comp. With the rest of the team firing and a fully fit forward line and remembering it was the highest scoring forward line in 2018 maybe 6-8 with good delivery. Ruck 2nd. Says Gawny better tap ruckmand but Grundy gets first because does more around the ground. My rankings add up to 60 which ranks us 4th.

  14. Troy Broadbridge, who played 40 games for the Demons passed away on this day 15 years ago. Troy married Trisha Silvers on 18 December 2004. Eight days later, while spending their honeymoon in the Phi Phi Islands, Thailand, he drowned after being swept out to sea by the tsunami that followed the Indian Ocean earthquake. Trisha survived. The red headed defender was a terrific team manager. He will always be remembered.

  15. People keep saying the club is great at preventing leaks. That was true when Jackson was CEO, but since he left we’ve been leaking again. I was able to get draft and trade info weeks in advance with minimal effort (and posted in draft thread as proof). We are nowhere near as tight as we were 2-3 years ago. The leaks have returned, let’s just hope our good form returns too!

  16. Reading’s not your strong suite? I can’t think of any one other sports writer (or non sports journo, for that matter) who comes close to capturing the spirit of the game in the way that Flanagan does.

  18. Hugely missed last year. On his 2018 finals form he would be transformative for our forward line defensive pressure. He is one of several "new recruits" - like a fit TMac and Brayshaw - who could give us a memorable year in 2020 and beyond.

  21. There’s glass half empty and glass always empty people! Personally I’d rather start with the glass full! Demons are just about to enter the window re ages of best players, Max, May, TMac 27/28 and then 25 or under Viney, Oliver, Petracca, Harmes, Brayshaw, Lever, close to 100 games and Fritsch. If 2020 is a bust then MD can go to town, but after few surgeries and majority of players getting a full preseason and the above players getting near 100 games, Demons will give it a fair crack this year. Plus we’ve addressed a few of the running issues in the draft and fitness issues with Burgess! 2020 is also an Olympic year, all good vibes for the Demons!

  22. Legendary status is a fickle thing. If the ball had've bounced for Milne he would have been after his heroics during the 2010 GF. To the Aint fans at least.

  27. Personally I think it’s too early to write Dunkley off as ‘depth’. He’s been in the system for half a season, was highly rated in that mid-season draft and has played senior footy. It took his brother Josh a few years to get going and his whole family are sporting achievers so there’s a lot of scope for him - particularly being a young bloke. Rivers inclusion in the senior team will be dictated by Hibbo’s availability and form. A season developing at Casey will be fine however I do I agree he looks a likely type to slot in to the team earlier rather than later.

  28. Final List for 2020 (excl Bennell) We have 1 list spot (either Rookie or Seniors) which is for Bennell. If he isn't recruited it can be used for the SSP (ala Lockhart in 2019) or the mid season draft (ala Dunkley in 2019) Ages and Games played have been updated. This year I have added the 'Free Agent' (FA or RFA) status of players at end of current contract, if applicable. More than half our total list is out of contract this year. Makes for extra competitiveness. The most critical re-signings imv are Petracca, Fritsch, Petty and Viney. If anyone sees any 'errors' please let me know. I'll ask mods to pin this thread. The 2019 version can be found here:

  31. R.I.P Broady, and thoughts with the Broadbridge family. Was developing into a quite good half back. Very courageous and determined. @ding and I have paid our respects at his resting place on Ko Phi Phi Don. Do you still have the pics Dingus? Fondly remembered and sadly missed.

  34. Would be like getting another new recruit for 2020 if he can make it back. Love the attitude expressed by AVB about how being unable to train, play, etc made him realise how much he valued being part of the greater group. It's this kind of team first thinking that will bring us the success we crave. Hopefully it's contagious.

  35. With Jetta, I see him at the crossroads after his injury interrupted season. I agree that if he can get back his form and fitness he is a lock to start games. At this stage I do not see him as a 'core' player.

  36. You are kidding right?...No i don’t think you are Weak Supporter Culture P..s off this Club throws crap at it’s supporters far too often Jones is a good ordinary player who won Bluey’s and was a “Leader” because there was bugger all competition within the list for years You won’t agree, but i don’t expect you too. Jones our number one player for the entire decade is both laughable and an indictment on how badly the club has been run for so long He should have been retired after 2017, but 3 years later.....

  37. 2019 was a pretty average season from Viney despite him playing the most games in a season yet. He barely had an impact in any games and had his worst statical season in 5-6 years. Hopefully with more time on the park over the coming years we can see a return of the 2016-2017 Viney that won more ball, laid more tackles, kicked a few more goals and made all his teammates walk taller. He was pushing towards elite across those seasons and was having a huge impact on games. The game away against West Coast in 2017 was a prime example of him bringing full intensity, notching up 39 disposals (despite missing a quarter with injury) and laying out their captain with a huge hit. Same in the Hawthorn game where he got 30+ disposals, but more importantly 15 tackles to set the tone and setup the win. If we see more of that 2017 Viney, it'll help immensely with our poor infield leadership and to help our midfield become dominant again.

  40. AVB 'rag dolls' Selwood in the Prelim and kicks a point from the resulting free. This breaks the deadlock as the siren sounds. Selwood whinges to the ump that it's 'not fair'. Saty, George, Baghdad, Dee Spence and Deespicable are among 15,000 'faithful' at Thursday training before the Granny, and provide the usual comprehensive and insightful training reports. Tracc and Kozzi put on a clinic in the Granny as we waltz away with #13. All Demonlanders have a late night. SWYL pronounces that all shortcomings of the MFC in the past 56 years are forgiven.

  41. I believe it was Hawthorn and another club (either Port or Bulldogs but we were not named) that listed him to be invited to the first night flagging an intention to take him in the first round. So initially we may not have planned to take him at 12 but as there were two clubs interested who had picks straight after ours, we needed to take him when we could. To me it matters little where we took him. He was who we wanted and we have him ? Its a shame journo's keep saying he was a 'reach' and that Jackson shouldn't be pick 3. These kids were picked where they were because they were rated highly by one or more clubs. The media should get behind them rather than these silly post mortems on what they thought. No one cares what they thought...forget the 'click bait' and let them enjoy their moments of glory.

  42. This is a simple observation that Taylor will be held accountable for his performance as he absolutely should be, he's a highly paid professional in a sought after job. But his critics will never really be held accountable. I am pleased to see that the release of a couple of short highlights packages have moderated the rhetoric post-draft. One veteran U18 watcher here posted pre-draft that he'd be "disgusted" if we took Jackson and Pickett. I'm not seeing that pointless vehemence now.
