  1. I'm currently spending a few days in the Victorian high country, and arrived at reception at a motel in Mount Beauty wearing a Dees top and cap. The guy behind the counter immediately commented, and said that we have one of the best young footballers in the AFL, Clayton Oliver. He went on to say that he was a former coach of the Echuca under 14s, and he relayed the following story about Clarrie. It seems that the U14s played two 15 minute halves during the half time break in the seniors, and one very wet Saturday afternoon, the squad was one player short. Clarrie, who was 10 at the time, approached the coach and pleaded that he be allowed to make up numbers in the U14s. The coach eventually agreed on the understanding that Clarrie wear a helmet to reduce the risk of copping a serious head knock while playing against much bigger kids. You guessed it, Clarrie went on to play a 'blinder' on a rain sodden ground and kicked 5 goals in half an hour of football against much older kids. The motel man reckons that he knew there and then that Clarrie had what it takes to become a star in the big time. Dazzledavey36 might be able to add some credence to this story. IIRC he has spent some time in and around Echuca.

  2. Hi all, with it being a bit slow news wise at the moment, I thought I'd put together a couple of cryptic clues to keep you all amused. All current players. Enjoy. 1. Meals on wheels? His delivery is superb. 2. Ahab warns guys? He’s muddled after being hit in the head 3. His locker isn’t Davey’s 4. Returning to revel in 2019? He’s not backwards in coming forwards. 5. Go back brown wag! There’s a tightly packed crowd of people here. 6. Can Ky jive? Maybe if he wasn’t so confused. 7. swift player, aerobic runner, goal oriented – just what we need! 8. Hopefully, he’s quite like Mike. 9. awe misnamed – when sorted he will take us to the promised land. 10. Anymore Darcy? With less fumbles, he'll be a regular.

  4. Fork 'em cause I hate every other club out there. I think we were also getting screwed by the AFL in regards to tanking at the time. Something half a dozen other clubs had done before us.

  5. Nothing 'creative' from me. I'm just you're average 'Joe in the street', who loves our Club with all his heart, is lucky enough to have witnessed quite a few Flags, and who wants to witness at least one more before the final siren sounds. That's my Monika, and I'm proud of it!

  9. You're not a sorcerer? Mine began with The Greatest American Hero whose title character was named Ralph Hinkley. Through many years of message boards, games and chats the name evolved due to other members having already claimed the name Ralph, until the current version came into existence.

  12. ...only weakness is OMac at CHB instead of Frosty. Shame that Hannan fits as an emergency but this is the state of the list, I guess. OMac should be an emergency in our opinions, with some serious running time and practice in the Casey team for some time.

  13. Hunter S Thompson is one of my favourite writers and Dr Gonzo is an alias he uses for his friend/attorney Oscar Zeta Acosta in Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas. As the originator of Gonzo journalism one of my favourite quotes of HST's is "buy the ticket, take the ride" which is what it's like to follow this club. In it to the death for better or worse. I love the way he communicates a seriousness/truth shrouded in nonsense/surrealism in his writings On BigFooty my username is Demonic Ascent chosen in 2006 when I thought we were about to experience the Ascent of the Demons - I was a little off on that one....

  14. Sorry I can't let the last comment go so I'm reneging on my "last ever post on the matter" The fact is Smith has done a total of SFA while Pedersen built a career out of hard work & being a totally selfless team player, crashing packs & working his backside off as an undersize ruckman. In 2018 he dominated at Casey & was probably our best player over the finals series. By contrast Smith did practically nothing in 2018 & very little in 2017. I watched him in the Casey finals where he was almost embarrassing, trying to take speccies, missing easy goals and being a wasted space in the ruck.

  15. Mills hit him repeatedly in the side before Bugg retaliated by throwing a punch at someone he wasn't looking at. Mills went down and Bugg didn't even realise until he turned around. Throwing the punch was a dog act. The force was excessive for the situation. But throwing a punch in retaliation is different (imo) than Gaff who squared him up and threw the punch either deliberately in frustration or as a way of trying to get an advantage on the field (ie disable him momentarily and run past him).

  16. And Peter Walsh was the Little Red Fire Engine. I am Big Kev because Stephen Tingay autographed one of my Demons Caps as To Big Kev, since then that cap has been signed by Robert Flower (RIP), Steven Armstrong and Nathan Jones.

  19. I think we should wait until at least the JLT games til we start to put new recruits in the best 22. I think the only exception at the moment is May. KK and Pruess probably get a look in too but the 18 years olds and ex-VFL will have to earn that spot and it's way too early to make those calls.

  20. You lost me as soon as you said it was on preseason form then included Hore for round 1 who is a recruit who has not even trained with the main group. How does this logic stand up?

  23. I signed up for the free trial last night to watch the Asian Cup. It was good quality, only stopped once and there were no issues with signing up or getting the stream started. On the NBN front, I spent a lot of time looking into satellite plans since the fibre will never reach my house. There aren't any available that meet my needs. Last month I switched from ADSL2+ which was getting up to 800Kb/s to Optus Mobile Broadband. I'm now seeing 20Mbps speeds all day with no dropout issues in bad weather. For anyone else with really crappy phone lines killing their ADSL speeds, I highly recommend checking it out.

  25. It is understandably often a stuff up, but fairy nuff with our growing membership numbers; all can be ameliorated to individual satisfaction in a few weeks - with a phone call to the mbrship dept. Who'd want the pack before Xmas, anyway? The MFC do a great job as it is, and these membership folk are always striving for the best on our behalf - even those interstate , such as my family, receive top service when requested or often, attention to best access/seats/ticket readiness/travelling times, family and friends rendezvous, etc. At times, they make you feel like you are the only Member, such is the quality and attention that they provide, not one in 50000.

  26. Must have been a great group with some fantastic lunch options/memories. Had a similar one going years ago, in Melbourne, amongst a group of professional associates and boy, did we look forward to these little sojourns! We had a rule: The best lunches in Melb were south and east of the Yarra River, and the best beers were in Richmond.

  27. I could have thought it was a reference to that guy Martin that use to play for us back in the 90s. Fairly handy player the old Pike and has a nice little collection of premiership medallions to prove it too.

  29. Unless it was a Xmas present, what's the problem? As long as you get your card and pack before round 1. Given the logistics of tens of thousands of memberships, it would always be iffy to expect it before Xmas, regardless of promises, and especially after the boost in memberships after our prelim showing. Storm in a teacup.

  32. Simple homage to those wonderful “MCC Match Day” officials - the “Blue Coats” in another time. No matter how hard you would argue at the gate that your dress was appropriate, the stock response was always “call them what you will sir, those shoes are ‘runners’ or those trousers are ‘jeans’.” The Cleese “Upper Class Twit” imagery goes without saying.

  33. I am not saying it wasn’t a dog act. It was. But the camera angle i saw on TV Bugg was breaking a loose tackle and let go. If you saw it at the ground, you may have seen more than i did. It still doesn’t change my opinion that Gaff’s hit was far worse and he should have been charged with assault (like Matthews in ‘85. It amazes me that the media have “forgiven” Gaff but couldn’t give a dam about Bugg.

  39. I visited Prague for the first time in 2007, and noticed "Praha" brandished everywhere, which, obviously, is Czech for "Prague". I always thought it would be a cool name for the bar I was going to open before I turned 30. Anyway I never opened the bar so thought I'd change my username to this. Prior to that it was "Cudi_420" which was just a joke name (Kid Cudi, 420, blaze it... ya know?), and before that, calabreseboy, which was a username I used online, dating back to my teenage years when I was a fully sick wog boy.

  40. P.S. since I'm sure you're all interested, this is the full image of that I used for my profile pic. Rodney in full flight and proudly displaying that famous No.14, subsequently proudly worn by a number of other tough high quality backman at the MFC continuing the legacy.

  43. And we can now flag this thread as a fabulous example of flogging a dead horse...... Loved Pedo as a person who got the absolute best out of himself and although he was a square peg in a round hole, he managed to engage, encourage and support on the field the younger guys coming through. He can go on with the rest of his life knowing he did all he could and considering how he came to us from NM I'd think he was enormously thankful of his time at the MFC. I believe that showed in everything he did. Having spoken to him a number of times I believe he would be appalled at the lack of support for Smith and I know he thinks Smith has had a terrible run at it due to injury. As far as your assertions go, I don't place much value on quotes of stats that don't have an underlying analysis of the circumstances. Eg, How often was Smith coming back from an injury vs Pedo who was at peak fitness when playing for Casey?

  44. 2018 was the best ride we have had since 2000. It ended poorly yes, but from Kenty’s Goal at Domain to our run in September, it was as sweet as I hoped it would be (especially enjoying it with 60000 and 50000 long suffering Dees supporters at the EF & SF respectively). Success is never guaranteed, nor should we ever foolishly believe it to just happen expectedly. But our best shot at a flag for 55+ years is upon us and I just need to witness one in my lifetime. It may not happen next year, but I am the most optimistic I have ever been in my 25 years of following this club that the next few years will bring us what we all crave. All aboard!!!

  46. I like that idea. Offer a paid contribution to the club ( as it is now) or just tick the box to be a member. Maybe offer some benefits with MCC/MFC membership to increase their involvement and willingness to pay next time. Try to draw them in. Any loss, as you point out, will be offset by all the other benefits of membership growth.
