  1. And hello to the world of diagnostic overservicing. The 'better to be safe than sorry' mania for diagnostic imaging is one of the main reasons our Public Health Service is struggling, all driven by the expectations coming from private medicine. If he doesn't need a scan, he doesn't f***ing need a scan.

  2. While not under appreciated by the red and blue faithful, I think Jack Viney is massively overlooked in his progress and impact these past four years. On Saturday he Captained and led the club to a stirring from behind victory. He dominated Clearances with 10 clearances, twice the next midfielder (Tyson on 5 and for Port's best, Gray on 5) and more than the mighty Max Gawn (on 7) Disposals with 28 at 71.4% DE, 9 more than Vandenberg (63.2% DE), 6 more than Boak (59.1%) who was Ports best in this stat. At the start of the third quarter, the players huddled around him and he gave them the final rev up. Not bad for a 21 year old small mid who would have won last years B&F if not for injury... He's a ripper!

  3. Can't believe those who are sitting on the fence with this. He's 22 (?) years old and has already done jobs on some of the best forwards in the game. Is a running machine, powerfully built and takes the game on albeit with the 'frequently odd' mistake. If we lose him I'll be extremely [censored]-off.

  4. Personally I think that every player who has the slightest ache after a game should immediately go in for a full body CT and MRI scan. And anyone sent off for the blood rule should have a top-up transfusion. Just to be safe.

  5. Unlikely to be more, but could be less. It's not an injury that comes with inherent risk to further damage, so will depend on how irritable and sore it is to running with lateral movement. Hopefully less.

  6. From The Australian: "However, in more promising news, Melbourne general manager of football operations Josh Mahoney said yesterday Brayshaw would not require scans scheduled for today". http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/afl/victorious-demons-to-keep-form-going-against-bulldogs/news-story/410a1514bd17896aee0982c97dcbbd09 Hooray!!

  7. Sorry to bump something this old, and sorry to direct people away from Demonland (I do love this site and have no intention of leaving), but I've started "The Dude" back up again at my own Melbourne site. Here's the latest entry: http://thedemondude.com/2016/02/nab-challenge-week-1-vs-port-in-pics/ And archives so far: http://thedemondude.com/category/dude-you-go-for-melbourne/ My servers are dog [censored] atm but I'll be updating them in the next few days.

  8. couldn't love this bloke anymore without needing a restraining order if he stays fit he will play 24+ great games and make AA or come very close. NAB game shortened by 30+ minutes so it really was a 35+ posession game he is absoluetly pivitol to our teams rise and will certainly be named in the leadership team next month - perhaps VC

  12. Speaking of highlights this is brilliant. All our goals in full, including build up. No Port rubbish.

  13. Gee......This McDonald bloke.......Was he the same bloke people were raving about after his 1st half of the season when he beat some of the great full forwards of the comp. The same bloke that was pencilled in for the AA side?.....The 24 year old who has played 82 games was in season 2015: 4th in disposals 3rd in kicks 1st for marks taken 5th in contested possessions 4th in uncontested possessions 1st in intercept marks 3rd in the Best and fairest. The reason he looks undecided is he had no one to kick to when he went for those runs, there was no spread. Yep he got towelled up a few times but so did a lot of our players. Some posters just baffle me.

  17. I questioned Viney being in the leadership group but what i saw on Saturday was how a true captain should play the game. The fact that he also completely embarrassed Wines made it even sweeter. You can almost pencil this bloke in after captain courageous himself in Nathan Jones.

  20. just so that all can feel comfortable on here that someone is upholding the proper traditions of Melbourne supporters, I watched the game at some ungodly hour of Saturday morning over here and there jumped in the car and drove to Switzerland to go skiing. Just right and proper for a Melbourne supporter. Have watched the game a couple of times and like the way the team responded. If we can do that when points are at stake I will be happy. All Iwant to do is enjoy watching my team play footy

  21. There's always an increased risk of hamstring related issues, but in the case of high hamstring like Kent's, ironically less so. Max Gawn is way past any issues with his reconstructed ACL. If he did it again, it would be a circumstance that would rupture an original ACL, or as close to it as doesn't matter. You have to remember binman, that any injury suffered by any player makes that area less than perfect, and in theory more at risk. No player is immune, and mostly it's situations beyond control, substantially inherited (genes). Think Geelong's Menzel vs. Michael Tuck.

  23. Had a look at Qtr 1, 3 and 4 last night, we are very harsh on our guys early in the praccy match fixtures. Grimes has been mentioned as one who was bad, 2 of his on the fulls were under some pressure and he did a couple of nice things to balance it out. Deep breath and enjoy the games for what they are, putting what has been learned into practice. 'We talkin bout practice man." In saying that what an enjoyable site to see, the MFC players endeavouring to put in sustained pressure for a whole qtr, a while half of a game, and I'll be blowed pressure acts for the full game!!! if we can keep that type of pressure up, keep incrementally improving some of the delivery/reducing the brain frts then we go someway to winning 10 games. Gawn is (no pun) just huge for us, he goes down and it becomes a lot harder to get first use of ball let alone his pressure releasing marks around the ground. I would hate, HATE, to be a defensive player in our fwd 50. The skill level our of guys in there on the weekend was high but the pressure acts through the roof and Port players chit the bed. Again if this can continue season long we will see a large number of turn over goals starting from the fwd line rather than midfield or from defence.

  24. I reckon he's in our top 10, possibly top 5 most important players. We can't afford to lose him, and at this stage I'm confident we won't.

  27. Garland cops a bit (from me included), but I reckon he's a very good "defender". I doubt many opponents find it easy to get a kick on him. Notwithstanding his shortcomings, I reckon he'd be one of the first picked. And yes, I've changed my tune, because in a better team I reckon he becomes more valuable.

  30. and collingwood are the experts in managing injuries? Reid, Elliot, Daisy Thomas, freeman, etc they usually have one of the longest injury lists and a lot of soft tissue injuries our medical staff know what they are doing and if there was any risk, they would do what they need to. a knee injury is very different to a hot spot on a foot so they would be trated differently

  32. He needs a scan cos this club has a nice history of not getting these right. 4-6 usually means f***ing season. better to remove all doubt. And I'm sure a professional footballer getting a scan isn't going to stuff up our public hospital system. In fact, I'd be pretty sure it wouldn't even occur at a public hospital.

  33. yeah one game in 6 months is too much. best rest them up and the quote "we now know we are going to be competative this year" are you for real? so you expect us to be good based on that one practice match? just like when we beat geelong away last year and then lost to bombers and Blues. Gee I hope the Dees do not have this soft, defeatist attitude. what if they injured? they could just as easily get injured in training - eg elliot, swallow, jones etc we need to get this young team playing together at every possible chance, how many games has our best players under 21 played together?

  34. And it was on this day that the Demonland admins could no longer deny what had been so obvious for so long. A statement will soon be made announcing mandatory drug testing before posting. Just waiting for Dee-luded to get a 'mystery finger injury' preventing him from posting for a time, as he will likely use his first 2 strikes within an hour or so.

  35. One passage of play stuck in my mind where Watts was outnumbers near the boundary and was running to the Port players and as he went to tackle they disposed of the ball. Each time he pulled out of the tackle and bumped so he could run to the next just for the same thing to happen. We ended up with another player there and the ball went out. Watts in this case wouldn't have got a tackle in the stats sheet. He made the right call and put in three efforts to stop the ball rather then one tackle, which if he had laid the one then the ball was gone. I was impressed with his continued attack and second and third efforts.

  36. I like the idea of capping the interchanges during the season proper to 90 for everyone except us - for some reason we look a lot fresher with 130 interchanges so I think we should stick to that...

  37. Finally got to watch a replay. Four big things I noticed about our game plan/ball movement 1. We almost never went backwards! Our players didn't even look like going sideways let alone back. Eyes nearly always forward. 2. We didn't hug the boundary line nor did we play thru the middle. Our forward play was between the two - attacking but conservative. 3. When we went forward there were players running alongside the ball carrier. 4. We played with Intent! We relied on defensive aggression rather than defensive ball movement. It worked! It looked like we were practicing our new game plan as I would think during the real season we will revert to some defensive ball movement. Can't attack all day against the really good sides. Will be interesting to see the balance between attacking/defensive ball movement next week against the fast moving Bulldogs. To me those 4 things showed not only will we be a 'contested ball side' (Goodwin's words) we will be a much more attacking side. If we continue we will have a lot more i50's, many scoring shots and hopefully a lot more goals (and wins). We will also be infinitely more enjoyable to watch...a good way to get supporters come to games!

  39. Right so once a player is tackled you cant make a second motion. Therefore players that are tackled shouldn't be able to move. This is cr*p. The rule is designed to stop tacklers pile driving players into the ground or planting the fot and slinging the players head into the ground. Not remotely like what Oliver did. But a chicken wing is OK or a ju jitsu chop or an elbow to the cheek bone.......if you are Chris Judd.......

  40. Agree if this is the case. The Port player had his arms free and could protect himself though, that is why it is a joke.
    4 points
  41. My view on this tackle. Oliver grabbed him by body. His arms were clear and he turned and handballed. Oliver followed him with the tackle making it appear more like a dangerous sling tackle. This young fellow playing his first game . The Port player was not hurt. I believe the MRP are overreacting here. a caution on this occasion would have been more common sense. I thought dangerous tackles were when you pinned their arms and slung them.
    4 points
  42. what a joke. Oliver didnt pin his arms. the bloke went to kick the ball like an overhead kick type motion, so he was moving that way and off balance. hope the senior players pay the fine for him. he would barely have gotten a pay cheque yet!

  49. 100% this will be encouraged by the coaches, his ability to handball through congestion or to moving targets in space is not necessarily picking his first option but the best option. His hand balling is creative and it is tough to find someone who has the time in a stoppage to be creative. Fyfe does this by drawing in two opponents creating space to allow him to give it over the top to a team mate, whereas Oliver does it through his ability to see what is happening and how it could pan out and picking the option in the best position.
