  4. Talk about majoring in the minor. We've just had a tough year on field, we're seeing an internal shake up, a mooted list cull and we're talking about blazers the players wear to official club functions.......

  5. I think we all need to understand how the voting works 4 coaches rate every player that played from 1-7, so every game a player playes he earns a min of 4 voted and max of 28 votes, so James Sellar played 16 games which he averaged 12 votes per game or 3 from each coach, that means he was below average. Col Sylvia played 17 games averaged 3.4/game per coach so just on Average, and the B&F winner Jones averaged 4.38/game/coach. Interesting way to do this, but when you break it down you it is a true indication on our season when your B&F was rated a 4.38 out of 7. Next year hopefully we can have players pushing towards 5 out of 7.

  6. So what I took from the night was this: - Riv is Max Gawn. I would be surprised if he stays. He will go somewhere that may have a chance of winning a flag. - Our captains are really outstanding people. - McKenzie is the guy you would want in the trenches with you. - We are going to be extremely active and aggressive at the trade table. Quite a few of the players I spoke to are unsure about their futures at the club and have been told they may be traded. - The club actually perceives its biggest problem as a lack of key forwards. We are very much in the hunt for one. In fact, we think a lot of our failure this year was in the way the forward line functioned, not the midfield. Interesting ... - Moloney leaves on good terms with the club, bad terms with the coach. - Neeld is a very domineering force internally, and has a ver clear view on how things are going to be - although he is a good listener and players know where they stand (quite the opposite under Bailey).

  7. Sorry, but nobody is ever going to convince me that recruiting him with a high draft pick when he wouldn't undergo a medical and clearly didn't want to play here would have been a responsible recruiting decision.

  9. I think it is interesting that the players referred to Neeld as"Neeldy" and "Craigy" etc which says a lot about their relationship with the players. I think it was Jones who especially thanked Neil Craig and interestingly thanked our friend Gerard Healey for his mentoring role which makes his instigation of the Brock McLean 'affair" even more interesting. All the players emphasised that they need to get set for another really hard preseason. Nathan said that he enjoyed the hard preseason set for them by Misson. They all thanked the supporters for sticking with them and that the support that they had got throughout the season really did mean something to them. There was a really great send off to Greeny and he did say that he would like to stick around the Club. Standing ovation. Beamer got a rousing ovation when Nathan thanked him which was a good way for him to leave the Club. Nathan ended his speech by telling the players to enjoy their time off, to look after each other but come back in shape and be prepared to work their backsides off. Listening to Nathan I am inclined to believe that he would have made a great captain. However Jack Grimes showed himself also to be a leader of men. He does have something about him that when he speaks people will listen and follow. He has a calmness and seems just so levelheaded. To me our leadership group will be a powerful force and will change the culture at the Club. The C word was mentioned either by Jack or Nathan and in terms that with the work they were doing on the track the culture would change. I liked what I heard from all the players. Neeld spoke well. There were no jokes but an acknowledgement of what the Club had been through the year. I liked that he said that he was emotionally invested in the Club. Cam S well I just found him boring. It was his delivery not the story of the history of the 1950's team. Tom McD will be a champion. Loved that his Mum couldnt be there because she had to look after the "others". All in all a good night. Can't wait for 2013. There will still be major changes to come though.

  10. Tom McDonald wins the Ron Barassi memorial trophy in second year at club and is a pick 53. Now every club would kill to have him. We seem to do better with our latter picks. Anyway I like to think that over at "PieLand" or "DogLand" they constantly rue the fact that they drafted X spud, when Howe or McDonald were available.

  11. Well done to Rivers. Coming 5th while spending half the season in a foreign role in a dead zone where the ball barely appears once a quarter. Very much hopes he stays, but if he leaves, this will help his FA value.

  15. What i now know as fact after last night. 1. Jared Rivers is gone to Geelong. 2. Jack Viney will be a Demon most likely U17 pick. We will take him. 3. Lynden Dunn will have a new deal this coming week. 4. Neville Jetta will be a Demon in 2013. 5. Gysberts will not be a Demon in 2013. 6. The players thought under Bailey they were training hard but now under Misson they now know they were maybe at 30% of elite AFL clubs. 7. The players looked at Bailey as a mate and never got the best coaching, under Neeld they respect and fear their new coach and have 100% better 1 on 1 coaching. 8. We are going very hard for Wellingham from Collingwood. 9. Two of the players told me we have to many SOFT types and Jack Viney will go along way to helping in this area, and they had never seen a better 17 or 18 year old ever. Thought i would share some of the things i now know with you guys. The night was very fun and i feel very happy with were we are going as a club. Cheers guys.

  16. I don't agree. If we were a top 4 side and hard at it, the Blazers would not be an issue for you and others. Keep the Blazers and earn the respect on the field.

  17. If I was able to magically insert one player from another club into the Melbourne midfield with the aim of making a huge difference, it would be Sam Mitchell. Viney is the same height as Mitchell. And he's currently only a couple of kilos lighter ... he'll make that up with half a pre-season.

  22. The only reason I'm engaging you is that you're representative of many who seem new to the history of drafting. One thing that is certain is that things won't pan out the way you think with regards to who the best players turn out to be. Here's a snippet from Gibb's draft: Phantom Draft VII: 2006 Phantom AFL Draft Matt Burgan 12:00 AM Thu 23 Nov, 2006 ROUND ONE 1 - CARLTON - BRYCE GIBBS Glenelg, 15 March 1989, 187.4cm, 77.6kg "In a draft that has been rated by some AFL recruiters as one of the most difficult to predict - due to the outstanding talent pool on offer - one selection that seems certain is the recruitment of Bryce Gibbs to Carlton with the first pick in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft. The dynamic midfielder is set to join the Blues, having originally been tied to Adelaide via the father/son rule. Highlights/achievements: Poised, well balanced and skilled playmaker who had outstanding year at Glenelg and with SA U18 team, winning All-Australian honours. Had excellent game against Vic Metro in NAB AFL U18 Championships, gaining 34 possessions, nine loose ball gets and nine clearances. Finished in top three in Glenelg Best and Fairest with his round 17 match against Port Adelaide outstanding, finishing with 33 possessions and kicking six goals." Now Dan, I have no doubt you'd be having a hernia if your club even considered over-looking anyone else in that year, but a fellow by the name of Joel Selwood went at pick 7 and Gibbs completely underwhelms me as a footballer. He simply doesn't attack the contest hard enough. Would he be your pick one now ? How about the lightly framed Scully that gets pushed off the ball ? Btw, how much have you seen Viney play ? The following is an assessment of what talent scouts don't look for in players from a HS article in 2005: 1. Turn the ball over through poor kicking 2. Lack sufficient pace 3. Have off-field issues that will hold them back 4. Don't always keep their head over the ball 5. Don't play a specific position Jack Viney doesn't have one of those issues, whereas someone like Vlastuin lacks pace and Wines' kicking is OK, but not where you'd like it for a supposed top 10 mid. And Dingaling, here's an interesting bio from the 2005 draft: "Nathan Jones (Vic Metro) - 17 years, 178cm, 83kg, Dandenong Stingrays/Mt Eliza Small inside midfielder with great running capacity, attack on the ball and depth in his kicking. Prolific ball-winner, averaging 20-plus for the three games - including game high 27 possessions in Vic Metro's 27-point win over Western Australia." My God Ding, Nate is listed as a small mid at only 178cms. Heaven forbid. Btw, Viney's attack on the footy makes Jones look "outside" and he has better pace. Put simply, he'll be a far better player than this year's B&F winner and that's no disrespect to Jones. Viney is just a rung higher. But wait Ding, here's another: "Marc Murphy (Vic Metro) - 17 years, 178cm, 75kg, Oakleigh Chargers/Doncaster Small midfielder/forward who is super competitive and creative and smart around goals. Captained the Vic Metro team successfully, winning best on ground honours against Western Australia in game one and averaged 21 disposals in the championships. AIS-AFL Academy graduate this year. Son of John Murphy, ex-Fitzroy, Swans and Kangaroos star player." No, it can't be. You mean the number one draft pick from 2005 (coincidentally a son of a gun) and current A grade mid at Carlton was small ? Jack Viney is unquestionably the best inside mid of the draft. Inside mids are the most valuable mids in the game. And it's a midfielders draft, yet you're concerned by Viney ? Get a clue. Oh, and one more. Lets look at the best mid from Gibbs' draft - Selwood: JOEL SELWOOD Bendigo Pioneers, 26 May 1988, 182.4cm, 80.2kg "Although a knee injury plagued him in 2006, Selwood is enormously rated by AFL recruiters. He is regarded as one of the premier midfielders in the draft, while his character and leadership qualities have also been highly commended. He has been touted as a future AFL captain by one recruiting manager. Highlights/achievements: Strong at the ball and skilful midfielder/defender who won All-Australian honours in 2005. Impressive leader at youth level. AIS/AFL Academy Graduate." Sound familiar to anyone you know ? Leadership and talent are the two most important ingredients in a prospective draftee and Viney has them in bucket loads. Maybe you guys can start watching and learning about footy rather than guessing at what makes a player, or overrating the hype on others.

  24. Hi mate number 1 is 99.9% - Rivers is going to Geelong. Player told me. 2. Cameron Schwab and I had a chat for about 15 minutes and I was very keen to find out about Viney. I asked about the HS article on GCS and Sheedy and he said Sheedy has known him since he was a little boy and both clubs are playing their cards well and MFC would do just the same as them as the AFL is a dog eat dog world. I then asked would we get him and he said the right things are in place to get Viney and they rate the kid right up the top of this draft. I said are we looking at Hogan in the U17 draft and he looked at me with a big smile. 6. Jack Watts told me about the training. 9. Jetta also told me a lot of fans don't know how big of a loss Jurrah is to our club and he is the most skillful guy he had ever seen play. He really looked up to him as a player. Jetta said he loves all the hard stuff in AFL football and that Viney is hard as nails and he is the best kid he has seen come to the MFC club in his time, Scully and Trengove included. He also thinks Jack Watts will be the next BJ Goddard. Jetta also said the MFC will play finals in 2013 after another pre season with Misson, thinks we will win some big games next year. Cheers rpfc

  28. Considering the absolute Garbage year the club & supporters we have had, i reckon this place has held together fairly well.. Imagine if Hawthorn won 30 games in 6 years....Like they used to 50-60 years ago. Blood would be spilt Game of Thrones style!

  29. D & P welcome, you'll learn to love the place. RE: Jurrah, one of the downside of so many passionate people in one place is that things get heated, and sometimes the wrong things come out of people's mouths (fingers). Some had very absurd views on Liam, and in hindsight would take it back, some were thankful, some like me were frustrated. On Demonland you cannot take each post completely to heart because you'll be broken in a day. You'll learn to find posters you respect and posters you ignore- I'm sure for some members I'm on the respect list and for many I'm on the ignore. Regardless you won't find a better place for banter, or people who live and breath MFC more than us. Clutch your breath and come on board. It's one hell of a ride.

  33. I don't mind the blazers from a heritage perspective, but what concerns me greatly is when they look and play like schoolboys on match day. This must change significantly in 2013. I think it will!!

  36. I still like the idea of trading Martin for Wellingham.

  37. He's been training with us. We signed a MOU with him 2 years ago IIRC. The club got special dispensation for him to play with our VFL affiliate this season. You don't do those things for every prospective draftee that you might be into. He absolutely nails several game-day needs for our club (contested ball warrior, leadership, toughness, good skills) and he aces the character test. I suspect we won't have to worry about him buying into the program either. You can bet your boots that he's coming to MFC, even if it takes pick 3 to get it done (although it would be nice if he is still on the board come the second round).

  40. I am not too bothered about picking up Caddy and think that taking someone like Oliver Wines with Viney would be a good move. Josh Toy is a guy that I actually taught and I really rate his character and skill. He is quite versatile and can play in the middle as well as down back. He has not gone well at Gold Coast mostly because he is homesick and because he has been dealing with the aftermath of coming to terms with the loss of his father. I think that he is a solid player, with a great 60 metre pinpoint kick who is much tougher than he has so far let on. He is also very mature and would not rock the boat in terms of the club culture.

  41. Funnily enough that was to stop them losing GA to the other plastic bulltish club GC. It seems all rules and fairness are out the window when it comes to setting up new clubs. Because they have to do good and all, which I understand, but why at the expense of us who have been here a damn sight longer?! We need to poach a player or two off GWS to restore order. As it is right now it's GWS 1- Melb 0. and they've been here for all of 23 games as opposed to our 150 years. We should be stealing candy off them. Can we save our "warchest" (lol) till next year and "make it rain" all over Cameron and Greene? Would be ultimate payback. And would set them back.

  47. I will respond on what they will stay 1) Moloney will be there and will hand the medal to Nathan Jones 2) Don's speach Thanks for coming we all know it has been a tough year on the field, we are not happy with what transpired and we are looking forward to a much improved 2013. Off feild we will be profitable we had Opel re-commit for a second year and a number of sponser options that we are working through. Like to pay our respects to Jim, the first B&F with out him, thanks Jim for all you have done. MN Speach, firstly thanks to the members and supporters for coming out to barrack for us when we know it has been hard to stick with us. 2012 has been hard we have changed the whole footy department and we will hopefully see our results change in 2013. Boys look around these are the people we let down, we have to prepare ourselves over the next 6 weeks for what will be another hard pre-season, there are no excuses this year be ready for October 29, we have to make our supporters want to come and watch us play, they turned up this year and we have to give them reasons to turn up next year. 3) Jones, thanks to the coaches support staff, family and supporters. Boys this year was crap, there is no way we are putting up with this in 2013. There will be more fluff but these will be the main points.

  48. It seems to me that some Melbourne supporters have kind of slipped into a welfare mentality where we think we haven't been afforded enough by the system. We want it all but don't want to have to pay for it. We have been massively overcompensated for Scully, something which we all acknowledge. We've had priority picks and bail outs by the AFL but it's still not enough. Obviously we all hope we can snag young Jack in the second round, but suggestions that we should not take the bloke simply because we have to pay about what his worth is just indicative of the handout mentality we have fallen into. If you'd told me at the start of the year thy we were going to have the picks we have now I would have laughed at you. Even after all of our failed recruiting and our questionable culture we have an opportunity to capitalise on ANOTHER draft. We have the opportunity to draft a heart and soul player. The son of a Demon great. We know better than anyone that there are no guarantees come draft time. Viney is the surest thing we've had come our way in a decade and the idea that some people want a bargain more than they want this animal on our side is unfathomable. Pay up people, I'm going to love watching this bloke play footy and I reckon you are too. Especially alongside his fellow draftees who are bought in under a new regime destined to take this side away from the dark place where we have resided for far too long.

  49. Everyone thats saying he can simply come back after 2 years..Why would we wait. It will cost us as much then as now to secure him. GC wouldnt just hand him up. After 2 years in the system and more than likely a gun, he'll cost. (probably more Why not simply admit this , pay up if we have to and have the benefit of having him now, have others around him enjoying it too. Im sick and tired of planning for 2-3 years down the track by playing with some swap card mentality collecting picks etc. Picks etc are there to be used. ,not collected and banked as such, theyre the coin of the football realm. Yes, you are supposed to spend it, just wisely.
