Rubbish. I'm a member of Storm as well, and they have one of the best memberships in the NRL, and their crowd figures while in the lower percentile are hampered by a 3rd world home ground. Just look at the surge in crowd numbers at Victory games once they moved from Olympic Park to Telstra Dome. Once the Storm move into their new facilities next year you'll see a marked increase in crowds. Waldron has been instrumental in a lot of these things happening. He's passionate and has made a huge difference since he's taken over. (unless you can claim to have been at some of the Storm info days like I have and can tell me otherwise). You cant just say its the recruiter and coach, thats a naive approach to what makes a modern day sporting organisation succcessful. And do you seriously expect to hear the CEO of Richmond or Carlton or anyone coming out and singing the NRLs praises on radio once a week? Of course not, their competing for the same recreational dollar on the weekends. I for one am quite happy for Waldron to stay where he is, and for the club to seek out 'the best and most qualified person for the job' now that Harris has officially left.

DemonDave, let me say up front that I like the Storm and rugby league, but the Storms' crowds dropped significantly when they moved to Telstra Some, and don't even come close to the Victory in terms of core support. The Storm's crowd numbers have been at similar levels (13k) when they've been successful, which is pretty often. When they're not making the finals, the crowd numbers drop under 10k.

As for Waldron, what has he actually achieved since he's been there? What's the Storm's membership numbers? You'd expect a team that's been as successful as the Storm to have a healthy membership. And as I previously said, their financial viability is underpinned by News Ltd.

Oh and btw, he did a great job in re-signing Steve Turner last season after Turner had already agreed to sign with the Gold Coast. What did the Gold Coast receive in compensation?

I think you confuse his passion with being the obnoxious prat that he is.

Caroline Caroline Caroline.. !! stop hitting the turps so early gal !! I would hardly say we're in TURMOIL !! maybe a party or two.. but no depresssion at Deeland I suspect !!

Caro...i think youre reading the wrong side of the loo paper dear !! Harris might think its that way.. but the MFC will continue on with its rebuilding and restructuring of the relative departments.

Caroline my dear.. in case you hadnt noticed the trend.. we're getting performers in..and underachievers out !! CAC might be the exception to that

Melbourne has been around for 150 years....many of that suprisingly enough without Steve Harris, Im sure we'll survive without him ( probably better id guess )

Spot on bub. Melbourne ditches another underperformer and we're supposed to be in turmoil. What a laugh!

Yet another example of hypocrisy from the Age which has become the master of agenda reporting.

Yeah, your post pretty much sums the storm and waldron up.

Maybe Age hypocrisy but the question needs to be asked of our board - who signed his one year contract extension in November last year and how much will we be paying him out for early termination?

OK so that's two questions, but we're a cash strapped club whose financial problem has been exacerbated by payouts to staff members and we have another one only 2 months into the contract. Has the board been financially irresponsible signing him up to a contract in November when there was already evidence of issues relating to his mamangement? Or have they been as managerially incompetent as Harris supposedly was, by not addressing the issues earlier before contract negotiations which have resulted in another payout to a staff member?

A situation like this does not arise in 2 months. There would have been issues 2 months ago but they chose to renew his contract and ultimately cost the club a payout.

Completely agree.

He should have gone months ago and the basis of the entension was untenable given the identified issues already at hand.

sickto, a contract extension usually means in addition to an existing contract. That would suggest that Harris was signed up to the end of 2009. Did you actually mean that he was re-signed in November for an additional 12 months?

Either way, I agree that the situation didn't arise in the last 2 months.

What is also disturbing and may go hand in hand with this situation, is that I read somewhere that the Board only meets 8 times a year. In days gone by it always met monthly, except for January.

This would not be a problem if the Board had sub committees that focus on particular areas (eg Audit/Finance and Football Operations) met more often and reported to the main board on a regular basis. The use of Board and sub committees is not unusual from an efficiency and corporate governance perspective.

Agree that Caroline Wilson's report is disgraceful. To label a club in turmoil because the CEO is leaving is a disgrace. Clearly he is no longer the preferred person for the job. Doesn't a club have the right to review its personell from time to time. Was Essendon in turmoil when Sheedy was not re-appointed? Was Hawthorn in turmoil when its CEO was replaced a while ago? Was St.Kilda in turmoil when its whole Board resigned last year? Is Collingwood in turmoil becaues Arocca left, he was the number two man? We are not insolvent. We have a good list of players. We are in the process of getting new facilities. We have record membership. Our debt is reducing. We are not in turmoil, we are in the hunt for a new CEO.

Lastly if it was the CEO of the Tigers going would they be in turmoil?

How bloody true, wish people would settle down and realise what a transition we have taken within the club, whilst I agree some mistakes have been made I look forward to watching the club make inroads to us being a power in the future.

This is the same newspaper that's been publishing lots of dirt about Wayne Carey, some of it true and a lot of it rumour and inuendo. I think Carey's a bit of a grub but FFS he still awaits trial for what he's been accused of and is entitled to a defence.

The Age thought that was fair enough in the case of another grub in David Hicks and has been publishing articles supporting this confessed former terrorist and racist turning him into a people's hero and claiming he was just "misguided" when he went off to fight for Al Quaeda.

I reckon there are double standards in operation at the Age and while I don't for a second endorse Carey, Hicks or Harris for that matter, it shows what happens when you have friends in the media and when you don't!

Caro, although I usually think she should be on the rumour pages instead of a columnist has some valid points. Turmoil is harsh but from an outsiders point of view would seem fair. We have turned over a large percentage of staff and key personal front the Football department to admin staff. As supporters of this great club a lot of us believe all the changes were necessary but if you didn't support the club and some that do would be thinking how stuffed is that club.

We are starting from scratch in all areas which is a positive but what we have been able to do is get some Melbourne people back to the club. I would love for the club to find someone with not only the business abilities but also someone passionate about the MFC.

We're going to finish last this year. Not getting Judd might be a blessing in disguise, but finishing last is also.

I am willing to wager money that we will not finish last.

Based on what exactly ?? Personally I think there are probably 4-5 teams that are al lbut monty's near the top...and mayeb as many near the bottom.. we're in the group thats left...could end up anywhere...but far from last.

Back to the issue of Harris's departure...is there anything to be read into the idea that Caro is of the AGED...and Harris from the same Tome ??..anything there ?? lol

TURMOIL : unrest; agitation; commotion; tumult; uproar .

Hmm

As a club are we displaying any of those ?? If anything we are currently experiencing the absolute opposite. We ( MFC ) are quietly ( as much as is possible ) going about our business of rebuilding the various depts. Yes.. is it wide and encompassing? yep. Probably one of the largest rebuildings this club has undertaken for a long long time. Is there panic ? Is there dissent ? Are offices being picketed ? Are there mass meetings in rented halls displaying massive outpourings of disatisfaction ?

Are players wanting leave in droves ???

I must be akin to Van Winkle as I mus have slept too long.. all this commotion going on and I was unaware !!

No dear reader..if anything is wrong its that there probably ought to be a bit more hurrah and flag waving..maybe that will come :) :) :)

I agree the timing is a bit odd but it seems to be as amicable as these things can be.

I have often been intereted to read the scribblings of C Wilson...but now I will be far more cautious with regard to her ramblings as she has obviously fallen off some perch.

Maybe not last but bottom 4 is likely. Bad results usually follow bad bews, and we've had our fair share of that before the NAB Cup has even started.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
