The day of the draft is here and we will try to keep track of the selections here tonight (bear with us because this could get tricky with player nominations)

ROUND ONE

1 Richmond Sam Lalor (GWV Rebels)

2 North Melbourne Finn O'Sullivan (Oakleigh Chargers)

3 Carlton Jagga Smith (Oakleigh Chargers)

4 Adelaide Sid Draper (South Adelaide SA)

5 Brisbane Lions Levi Ashcroft (Sandringham Dragons)

6 Melbourne Harvey Langford (Dandenong Stingrays) Midfielder, 191cm, 15/3/2006 A strong, big-bodied midfielder, Langford was a joint winner of the Larke Medal at the under-18 national championships this year. He's a contested ball-winning beast who has a penetrating left foot and can take marks and kick goals in attack.

7 Richmond Josh Smillie (Eastern Ranges)

8 St Kilda Toby Travaglia (Bendigo Pioneers)

9 Gold Coast Suns Leo Lombard (GC Academy)

10 St Kilda Alix Tarou (Gippsland Power)

11 Melbourne Xavier Lindsay (Gippsland Power) 183cm, 3/8/2006 Best afield in the biggest game of the year and won the Morrish Medal. Could this elite kick prove to be a steal?

Call it co-incidence if you like but today happens to be Alan Johnson's 68th birthday.

Alan was the first player drafted in the very first annual national draft held by the then Victorian Football League in 1981.

Recruited from Perth WA and renowned for his courage, he made his debut in the opening round of 1982 as a wingman and excelled in both that position and later in a back pocket. Johnson won the Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medal as the club's best and fairest player in his second season and again in 1989 when he was named in the VFL Team of the Year. He played in the Demons' 1988 VFL Grand Final and retired at the end of 1990 after 135 games (95 goals). He was made an MFC Hall of Famer in 2013. His son Chris, also played for the club from 2004-8.

Happy Birthday Alan Johnson!

Back in 1981, each of the 12 VFL clubs had two selections at the draft. Melbourne's other selection was Port Adelaide SANFL full back Danny Hughes, another 'Bluey' winner (1985) who was All-Australian in 1988 and who also played in the Grand Final that year.

Two great servants of the club recruited in the first ever national draft - here's hoping that by the end of the night, we will have seen the advent of two players who with careers of at least the same quality as our two inaugural draftees.

AJ was of my favourites back in the day and Danny Hughes was a tough full back who gave his all. We really did select well in that first draft. Hoping we do as well tonight.

Commentators expecting Tigers to trade some picks to spread into next year

Guess we don’t have a chance given we already traded F1

Still holding out hope that Tauru slips to our second pick.

Otherwise will be thrilled with Langford and either Lindsay/Allan/Berry

Looks like they're going to waffle on a bit longer this year. Last year was around 20 mins in from memory.

lol don't think it said anywhere that the actual picks started at 7. Just that draft coverage started at 7pm.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

    TRAINING: Wednesday 5th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti
