The thing about ‘football actions’ is they impact either the ball, or the player in possession of the ball. He did neither in this case.

I simply can’t see how the AFL doesn’t want that action completely stripped from the game. Left the ground, had no impact on the play, turned a shoulder, created a concussion.

Now ..the send off rule might indeed need to be revisited.

If they had rightly been required to play play one short for 10 minutes then they would have had to change their gameplan and the previously disadvantaged team, having lost a key player  may have been able to restructure somewhat and get the game back on even terms. 

It has always made sense   but agreeing on the terms is difficult

Anyone who says its purely a footy act needs to be sure in their own mind that Maynard would have turned, braced and leant his body weight and momentum into Brayshaws head if it had been a teamate there instead of Brayshaw.  The only answer is of course not.

Has to suspended for that for 3 to 4 weeks. Otrherwise its open season on players kicking the ball.

The ball had travelled past Maynard when he launched at Brayshaw.

It was not an attempt to smoother off the boot. 

The usual approach to a smoother in that case would be expected to be a vertical leap rather than a lunge at the player.

Contact was always going to be made by Maynard once he launched.

So the decision he made was sacrifice Brayshaw and save himself by bracing rather than turn it into a down the field free front on tackle which may not have lead to a head knock.

Must be a 3 or 4 week suspension.  Very bad look for the AFL.

May well have effected the result of the game.

Given Brayshaw's concussion history this could be very serious.

The accident excuse is total BS. You hit a person's property accidently you pay. You hit a player outside the rules accidently of the game you pay. Simple as that.

To suggest that this was a football act after the recent history of head high hits and the AFL’s mantra of the head being sacrosanct is ridiculous. At best, Maynard was careless and that should be sufficient in the circumstances, to make it a three game suspension.

Some observations

the way the commentators - all unabashedly pro Collingwood - immediately commenced a defence of the action speaks volumes

the way mccrae and Maynard immediately mounted a defence speaks volumes

the way goodwin and co speaks volumes - very clear on what they thought 

the admission by daicos and others that Maynard plays close to the edge is a telling reminder of his intent 

viney’s response was telling - someone should have laid Maynard flat in a later passage

The mro is an ex Collingwood player who has proven incapable of consistency or logic

anyone thinking Maynard will be suspended isn’t reading the field of play. Media will be defending him. It’s a pity we can’t have a “no media comment” on these cases until they are adjudicated

a bigger question for me is why our club is so timid in its response on field (Viney excepted) and from the coach. They should be ropable

 

this plays into how we let Cox get away with what he does and how timid we are in public . It’s odd

 

i hope the club pursues this hard in the media and in the tribunal. I want this grub rubbed out

If the MRO deems it "Careless" (which they might as I don't believe Maynard intentionaly meant to hit him), it will be graded as "High Contact" with "High Impact" (as a best case) and that carries a two match suspension automatically. There is no way in hell they could get that downgraded on appeal. Worst case for Maynard it could be deemed "Severe Impact" as Brayshaw was momentarily knocked out and that's an automatic 3 matches PLUS a trip to the tribunal.

While they will argue he was going for a smother and try and pass it off as a "football incident", leaping at a player in this way at full speed and hitting them high like that in the head is just unforgivable in our current world where the AFL is (quite rightly) very concerned about CTE class actions that will at some point be coming. That and the fact we lost a player 5 minutes into the game which gave them a significant advantage

Unfortunately for Maynard I can't see how he will be playing in a GF if Collingwood gets there. This case is bigger than denying a kid a chance to play in a premiership team. 

Van Rooyen will get at least one week for his cheap shot (Intentional, HIgh Contact, Low Impct), but I could see how it might be two weeks as well if they deem it Medium Impact - which they very well might

In my mind he absolutely deserves to be suspended, and for weeks - and if he isn’t, the next player who does this will be.

If he isn’t suspended, it becomes entirely plausible that any player could launch themselves at the kicker, make a feeble attempt to smother, and then lay them out. No case to answer. The AFL cannot allow that precedent.

For what it’s worth, I feel the natural movement to protect yourself and the other player would be to press off them with your arms. If what Maynard did was merely a footy act we would see players getting knocked out cold this way every other game.

Waking up today has not done anything to assuage my anger about that

I dont plan on watching the pre-game, half time and post-game stuff on fox or 7 anymore - which I didn't last night from half time onwards out of disgust. The footy media is largely full of unlikeable characters. If im not at a game, then im watching the rest of the finals on mute. Ive seen people say they mute the games, throughout the years online, and thought it was a bit extreme, to lose that crowd atmosphere - but I think I understand now. Just want a pure visual footy experience without any of the verbal diarrhoea. Unsubscribed from every footy podcast too! haha.

Some great analysis in this thread. Maynard was clearly briefed prior to speaking to use the word football act. That was premeditated and no coincidence. This was designed to get in early and set the agenda. Media then piles in with same nonsense. Comments such as we can all agree there was no malice. Can we Maynard the only one who knows that. Players on report should just shut the you know what up. So sorry for Gus and Demons it was a major factor in result. If this had been May against Daicos totally different narrative but hey it only the Dees. Hope they break the player code and call Viney as a witness he first hand could attest to the intent. Correct, if Maynard didn't elect to turn his body and bump it would have been a down the field free kick and both players continuing on.  The moment he turned his body he elected to bump, he had a choice, he choose to turn his body and hit Brayshaw with his shoulder flush in the head.

my god i am so angry. here we have a defenceless player with a history of concussion and the media are defending the bloke who knocked him out and potentially put him career in doubt.
