I feel like a lot of people don't watch Himmelberg play.

We don't need nice moving slightly undersized key forwards, we already have the likes of JVR and McDonald. Imagine that you bring in Himmelberg (along with Brown, McDonald/JVR) and that you're playing against a defence of May, Lever and Hibberd - then try to work out who plays on which forward. Unless you confidently say 'May has to go to Himmelberg' then what's the point of brining him in? If it were me, I'd probably play May on Brown, Lever on McDonald, and Hibberd on Himmelberg ... and if that's the case then what's the point?

We need a big forward that the opposition has to pay respect to first against the long ball. We're fine when the ball moves quickly with our range of mobile forwards, which is more of Himmelberg's game. In other words, we're not lacking the skill that he brings so why bother chasing him (or a player like him)?

I would be looking at him more as a defender if we're going to play Petty forward.

...not sure what his contested work is like but we need to look at someone if we're to free Lever up a bit more.

This is the way I see it pan out also.

He takes the defensive role and we can give Petty a proper go with JVR and Brodie/Max

@Redleg Tom McDonald’s size is not a worry, he just can’t get out of a trot and he can’t turn.

Himmelberg is a much better option than Riccardi or Georgiades, who are the other two that get spoken about

If you could get Georgiades on the cheap, knowing he's out for 12 months with an ACL, I wouldn't dismiss it.

Jason Taylor was a big fan of his in his draft year.

Would you look at Ben McKay? He can either play the second tall defender role, allowing Petty to swing forward, or we could try him up forward... as long as he kicks it better than his brother.

Completely agree.

Sure, we need guys that can win or defend groundball (that's ideally your smalls), but I'd much prefer someone who is a legitimate threat in the air. That's not Himmelberg.

It's the usual, hey, this player plays somewhere else and is therefore better than anything we've got.

BBB and TMAC need to be persuaded to retire, no point in them playing out their careers at Casey, Don't know how that affects salary cap/payout

with TMac we flattened out his salary so I suspect it's around $300k per year. Have little feeling for BBB.

The AFL used to allow special pay out deals with long term injured players but I can't see that helping us if they are just suffering from nagging injuries.

With the limits on the soft cap there's not much room for coaching contracts etc.

The big hole is of course due to Weideman who we all expected to come into his prime around 2021/22. When that failed we are now looking at Jefferson who is still very experimental and more likely a 2025 player if he makes it.

Collingwood have shown that you don't need gun big forwards if your game plan is well structured. We may need to do the same

I’d play him back alongside May and Lever, he’s a lovely field kick and got plenty of the ball in his stint back.

Then I’d probably swap him forward and send Petty back when May is done.

Our 2m+ forward is probably a second ruck. 

I doubt we’ll have the best combination of financial and chance to win offer. So I doubt we’ll get him anyway but his versatility means he’ll fit somewhere

Yet to do anything at all - BUT my hope is that young Will Verrall could be that guy.

In some fleeting vision preseason, I saw enough to be hopeful - can't wait to see him with another pre-season and then get going. Hope I'm right.

No thanks to Himmelberg. It would take a 5 year contract on big money to get him, and he's just not that good a player. The last thing we need is more players heading well into their 30s with a big fat contract in their back pocket.

He could possibly help, but you are adding another not big key forward, to a side that needs them.

We really need a 25 year old Tom Lynch, more than anything. Then Roo and Fritta could compliment him.

Possibly our best hope would be Verrall in the next few years.

I am not saying we get Georgiadis to resolve our tall forward problem. I am saying that if we can get him cheap, we should get him because he's very talented and could be a good athletic third option. He's certainly better than Joel Smith.

Agree he is better than Smith, but he won't be cheap, either in contract, or trade price.

PS: When we were ordinary, I would have grabbed anyone who has played footy, but now we need to be very careful and selective with who we add to the list.

He did just do an ACL, so he may be. It would have to be a good deal, but I remember Jason Taylor saying they were very keen on him, so no doubt if the opportunity was there we would ask the question.
