Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

We are a quiet crowd and that ain't changing in a hurry

We're reserved, conservative and dare I say it, civilised!

It's a point of difference that doesn't bother me one tiny bit.  It's who and what we are

Urging otherwise is a waste of time and effort as I've been hearing the same thing since the 1960's

You clearly don't sit anywhere near Mrs Dw or myself. I had to move from where I was sitting for the Carlstink game because I was making a small child cry, I was that loud.

I'd reckon even with a smaller supporter base, a lot of Demon fans have been making the effort to attend games this year.  At work we have a Demons chat of about 20 people (tiny, I know), mostly based in Melbourne.  At least 5 of us are interstate and we are all travelling down and meeting family / friends to support the Dees at on Monday.  Further, at least 3 or 4 of us (myself included) all independently arranged to go to the Suns game.  Now, obviously this is an incredibly small, anecdotal sample size... but none of us spoke to each other about whether we were going to games.  So the effort is heartening to see!

You often see on the screen at home games …messages asking supporters to make a noise .

Most Demon supporters are too old to yell anymore.  Our supporter base must be the oldest in the league.  By a stretch

What we need is hundreds of thousands of new young supporters ... and that can only happen with at least a decade of sustained success

When that happens we'll be a lot louder.  Maybe 10 years away though so don't hold your breath

Some of the regulars around me are so damn negative and at times disgraceful with abuse hurled at our players it's embarrassing

I've found that as well.

An example was in our loss to Freo, a supporter was claiming loudly that "if Lever plays again, he will never watch again". I am bewildered.

Really unhappy people, or have such high expectations, or maybe entitlements.

Where we have have been in the past 50 years, and where we are at the moment. That way of support doesn't add up?

Ha ha!

Collingwood often have 60k screaming fans like your goodself ... but they've probably got a million supporters Australia-wide

But they are nearly always in some sort of contention finals-wise (despite only winning 2 flags in 65 years)

Living proof that playing finals consistently delivers the numbers

Bottoming out and staying down the bottom like we often did kills off support

In Europe big felllaaaaa. Much of the TV  overage of the crowd is on the same side of the cameras in the MCC snd Northern stands. The fact that you are away from the game not at the G does not necessarily prove your assessment of Dees fans at the game. You see the Warne AFL and Ponsford Stands and presume that your criticism is correct.
I live interstate and get to about 6/8 games per year at the G and 1or 2 in Qld

since 2017 our crowds have been universally better and records vs Clubs such as Bulldogs Freo and Tigers have been broken. Overall we are now in the top half dozen for crowds taking in far more percentage than our alleged total fans than 80% of other Clubs plus also in our membership.
Yes I would love us to always play at the G against ANY opposition and always have 35/40,000.
But this year we will have our lowest crowds at 29,000 odd vs North and Freo. Say 30,000 which beats our 20/21,000 of yesteryear.
We are a quieter reserved crowd and that also can be misjudged on TV.
Not sure how long it is since you have attended the G but Friday  night was definitely half or maybe even slightly more Dees fans say 27,000 and the 50,000 was about par.
If the Blues had won the week before 60,000 plus would have been there.
The word pathetic is not really a public reflection but your more private frustration and possibly anger cause you are not there also.
I have followed the Dees for 65 years and as a 10 year old went in about Round2 in 1959 to see the Dees near the Pies.
I have also been in crowds of 12/15,000 vs Fitzroy or Hawks in mid winter. None of that any more JG.
Now we are going to get our second Biggest H and A crowd in our history against our biggest rival who fill stadiums regularly.
We may have about 40% of the crowd (36/40,000) of 90,000 please don't carry on about that being pathetic.
Revel in the joy of our record/increased membership and the younger fans that are coming to games with their parents. This over a decade plus sustained success and always bring in the flag race are no doubt a circuit breaker.

We may never be in the Big Four or Five but we can be in the top of the middle rung of Melb Clubs and punching above our rate of % of fans and membership attending each year.
This  would be an extraordinary achievement for an underachieving former power Club over 5/6 decades of almost irrelevancy to be respected for that alone.
It may not happen in my lifetime but we are making solid/fruitful gains in most aspects of our AFL existence.

Do the clubs get anything out of the food and beverage sales or is it just the gate takings?

I don't believe so in a general sense but I heard somewhere that the Pies get the 'pouring' rights in the Western Stand (Ponsford Stand) ... for all their 17 or 18 games at the MCG

Having a bit of money & clout goes a long way hey!

Others may know better but we get some sort of cheque from the MCC for each of our home games at the MCG.  However, break even might be 22k minimum

And the Pies make a stack of money out of our home games against them.  They sell more than 20k x $1000 premium memberships that allows them to attend away games (with reserved seating payments as well)

So it's a myth that the home teams at the MCG (against the Pies) get all the cash

Personally I leave every single match with a sore throat and a headache that’d drop a horse. All good, that’s what I signed up for. But it’s so disheartening to have to keep hearing about how we don’t turn up, and about how those of us who do turn up aren’t making enough noise. It’s especially irritating when it’s coming from someone who for whatever reason can’t/won’t attend.

My husband’s favorite thing about me going every week, is that for 24 hours post game I lose my voice and so I’m silent. He calls it the “post match bliss” 🙄😂

It's quite incredible how our own supporters fall-in to the ridiculous narrative that we don't turn up for games

This false narrative plays to the popular stereotype of Dees supporters as fickle and elitist. The media enjoy perpetuating it as the public laps it up. If it enrages Dees supporters, all the better to drive their engagement (eg talk back radio, clicking on articles). No eloquent arguments based on evidence (our match attendance relative to membership number is actually one of the highest in the AFL) is persuasive.

Can't reason someone out of something they were never reasoned into in the first place.

Been having similar discussions/arguments lately with a collingwood supporting workmate.
Today he was bagging our attendance to games.
I told him our average attendance was pretty good.
He didn't like that .... Jumped on his phone and found we were 6th in the league behind the Big4 and Geelong.
He didn't like that either and quietened down.

I play up on it too.  Was in a pub in Taralgon with my MFC scarf on a few weeks back and joked to my gf that it was a stop off on the way to Baw Baw from her place.  Asked the barman if they had any cheese boards i could try.

Then on the other hand in a pub in Newbrough wearing the scarf, I was asked what that '[censored]#t' thing I had around my neck was.  Classy.  Amazing the guy could talk without any teeth.  Probably a Collingwood supporter.

At the Freo loss old mate up back of our bay kept yelling that Harmes shouldn't get another game, and that he should go back to the VFL, because that was his standard.

Admittedly Harmes did quite a few stinker things that day, but he's got a well earnt premiership medallion and a memory of kicking that brilliant pass to Fritta that turned the game that old mate will never have.

@DubDee - you should check with the club as, if you have a GA membership you should be able to get into every home game. There may be less choice of seats, but your membership should be counted as a ticket already sold. There’s no way you should have to pay extra just to get in.

No, you cannot scan in on the day with a normal GA membership for Kings Birthday, that is the whole point of a fully ticketed event. The only tickets already counted as already sold for this game are reserved seat members. This was a decision not made by the club and there is not much that they can do about it.

Personally I'm really [censored] off about this situation.  I'd cut short a trip to Brisbane specifically to go to Kings birthday game for the first time in years on the basis that as a full home and away member (but without a reserve seat) I could reasonably watch the game if I got there early enough to get one of the GA seats allocated for the game.

Back in Feb the club sent an email that stated:

Your membership will grant you general admission access to all home games at the MCG. You do not need to upgrade to a reserved seat for these games, however it is strongly encouraged for Rounds 1, 6 and 13 due to capacity.

The in March (an email I missed in all the spam, it softened that to "(subject to availability)" and then a few weeks ago when I was busy with a whole bunch of life stuff, it's there burried in an email that you do need upgrade to a reserve seat as they have been busy preselling all the tickets.

I'd like to know where the buck truely stops with this mess as on the AFL website it states:

https://www.afl.com.au/tickets/faq

Who sets the ticket prices?
The home club sets the prices for all 2023 Toyota AFL Premiership Season matches.

I’m a member, will I be forced to upgrade to attend a game?
This process may differ from club to club. Please refer to details provided by your club or contact them directly for further information.

DD ring the Club and you may be able to upgrade still if there are any tickets for seats left.

You may  be in  the gods at Level4 in the Warne Stand but still able to see a great game.

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
