Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Gents

Can we discuss who has had the most underwhelming start of the season?

I am starting to worry about Angus Brayshaw. Not sure if the issue is where he is playing or something else.

On the other hand JVR, McVee and JJ have been great additions to the team.

That game was a hard watch. But did what we needed and the overpower the Eagles.

I think Petty showed that although he was drafted as a forward, he has lost all forward craft.  He has no leading patterns and looks uncomfortable being in front in marking contests,  fine to swing fwd in games but I don't thing we can play him as a permanent forward.  Agree or should we persist with him?

Really love the podcast guys. It's a must listen every week in my household.

Last week you highlighted our accurate kicking for goal and it most definitely has improved under the tutelage of Chocko Williams. How good was Trac's set shot kicking? 2 set shots for 2 goals this week. In previous years those same shots were no certainties. He also nailed a nice set shot last week too. Our set shot kicking overall has been fantastic.

Agree, to me he is sliding (slowly?) down the list of best 23 and has been for a while. While his performances are ok, his impact is becoming less. A niggle? Something isn't quite right.

To add onto this, I was at the game sat in the 2nd tier stand behind the goal at the Melbourne cheer squad end. It was noticeable when the Eagles went forward that they had advantageous match ups constantly but poor kicking/decision making got us off the hook.

Harrison Petty is a good player so he will have games up forward that are really damaging and will make us want to persist with him up forward but in my opinion, we need 3 talls + a mid-size option like Hibberd in our D50. Not 2 talls, 1 mid-size option and 3 smalls.

What's underwhelming to you about his season so far?

Don't just say he's underwhelming and not provide something to actually critique. Per my comment in response to Travy14 about Petty, our D50 looks weirdly out of shape due to the rotation of Petty forward. I think Brayshaw is a victim of this as he's being asked to man a mid-sized or a tall key forward at times.

Aside from that, I think he offers a hard head and composure to our D50 which helps us lock the ball in our forward half.

We are in a good spot and it’s only a month of footy; cool your jets on Angus.

He is our best Ute and we are playing him in the backline which is fine. His kicking is ‘all duck or no dinner’ when he gets us going through the middle.

Not everyone is going to be firing on all cylinders and he is a proven player.

He may bite off a bit, but our new gameplan demands someone bite off something down back to get us going corridor. May rarely does, Lever never does, Petty Nup, Rivers is increasingly ahead of footy, Salem injured, Hibberd prefers down the line, and Bowey needs someone else to try and get us going.

Interested to hear the pods view on list management with respect to managing a long term age profile.

-Is Jordan a just keep for the future, or does he just go ok in a strong side?

-Is it important we keep those younger developing players for the future, or can we plug those age profile gaps through trading in the future?

-With a potentially strong draft hand in 2023, should we be drafting now or should we trade for future draft picks, to better time the list regeneration?

Similarly, where do we see our list/best 22 weaknesses at the moment? With Hunter and Grundy coming in, the development of JVR and form of Brown and TMac, have we covered a lot of the holes we thought we had last year?

And finally, apart from injuries opening up a spot: where to for Salem and Harmes from here?

On field questions:

In the first four games this year we have seemed pretty bulletproof except for the first 3Qs vs Brisbane, where we just seemed off.

What do we think was off? Match ups? Player intent? Travel?

Gents you do a great job with the podcast, thanks for terrific listening!

How do you see our optimal forward line working by seasons end and similarly how do you see our best backline setup and will it be different for a Collingwood smaller forward line versus say Geelong or a bigger opposing forward line?

Been a long time listener to the Pod since the time of Grapeviney. You guys are to be congratulated, the best analysis of Dees games available.
How do you think we will balance the old with the future in our forward line. I think we need to give continuity to JVR while Jefferson has been strong in the 2s, although he is more a project for next year. Schache has been good as well and is only 26 I think. TMac and BBB complicate things by also putting in good performances even though injury clouds hover over both.

Happy to be corrected here but im not sure Petty was drafted as a forward. He played all his footy for SA as a defender in his U18 year.

Some musings on Petty's role in the forward line please.

I got distracted by the 30+ weather and margaritas in Cairns (and a couple of 7yo's playing outside in the humidity. Thank gawd I was out of Victoria for the Easter break... anyways.

The last I saw of the match on TV was Petty's weirdly spilled mark which Charlie S mopped up for a goal.

Questions:

  • Was that scenario emblematic of Petty in the forward line? He's a bit out of touch, for a class act? Keep pursuing it and it will come?
  • What is his specific role do we think 2 weeks in?  Is it to take an intercept defender/big body to allow TMAC and JVR some more room run their lanes? Thus, he is unheralded, unglamorous and therefore seemingly much maligned...
  • Something else altogether?

Thoughts please.

Thanks for great podcast. When Gawny comes back how will things be different now that Grundy is showing his wares?  And can Gawny and Van Rooyen interchange in the spearhead possy (when Gawny not rucking) to  free up JVR for a bit of a gallop?

Yours Faithfully

Bush Demon.

Hi guys, I’d love some discussion and enlightenment on the historical practice of moving backs into the forward line, and how often it works. Not just with the Dees necessarily…have there been many well known examples where a trained, specialist  defender has completely transformed their career into a key forward?

Obviously in recent times for the Dees we’ve seen Tmac, and lately Petty (although did he play forward pre AFL?)

It must be hard to switch…

Thanks!

Hello there,

My questions are as follows.

What do we need to do to beat Essendon?

Who are the danger players at Essendon we need to be mindful of besides Luke Stringer?

If Michael Hibberd is out due to achilles soreness who do we replace him with?

When James Harmes returns from personal leave should he play in the Casey Demons team in the VFL first?

Should we persist with Harry Petty in the forward line or bring back Ben Brown if he has recuperated from his back injury?

Who should we use as the "super sub" (23rd man) against Essendon?

I have a (serious) question.

There seems to be a bit of chatter that the club is using the sub rule to get Melk to 100 games at the dees (though not so much after JJ got the nod against the eagles) - the inference being Melk has not been selected on merit.

I understand giving a fringe player one, maybe two games to get them to the 100 game milestone.

But would an AFL club really gift a player who has already achieved that milestone (and in melk's case also the 200-game milestone) 5-6 games to get them to 100 games for a new club (i assume the logic is by doing so it means any future father son/daughter rule is on the table)?

I think this is it personally, we used Melksham for this role in previous years

Question 1: We've spoken at length about Mark Williams' influence as goal kicking coach but do you guys think Kozzie is still swirling the ball around a bit too much in his run up when taking a set shot?

Question 2: Why do playing surfaces look so poor lately? Is it really just from the swag of Ed Sheeran concerts?

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
