Interesting you mention the Anzac day 1986 game - this game was actually a rare MCG "double header" with the Melb/Sydney 2pm game followed by the North/Geelong 5pm game. Both crowds were listed as 40,117 so you can assume about a 20k split for both games.

I've been looking at some old 80s games recently and the crowds in that era were terrible for the competition as a whole. It wasn't solely due to the suburban grounds though that would have definitely played a part. Some games reached the 60-70k mark but even a lot of "big 4" games only hit about 40-50k (at either MCG or Waverley) which would have been considered a great crowd in those days. Many games got the standard 10k-25k which are dwarfed by today's crowds (look at round 1 with back to back high 80k crowds and ours almost 50k with an average of 43.5k across the round including a paltry 8k for the gws game. Compared to the corresponding round in 1986 which drew an average crowd of 27.4k across the 6 games 5 played in Melbourne and 1 Geelong all at 2pm).

They got 42000 into Arden st for a NM v Coll game back in the seventies. Safety standards either didnt exist or were simply ignored.

Amazing there werent any bloodbaths like they experienced in the UK.

The VFL were lucky and they knew it. They had to pull the plug on suburban grounds before people died en masse in a fire and  families sued the VFL.

Also, people's expectations have changed. Most suburban grounds in the 60s and 70s had little seating, except for club members. The standing room allowed for bigger crowds, but it was far less comfortable overall.

The MCC was disappointingly empty I though in round 1. I said as low as 40 and high as 60 and we got 48. MCC reserved seating is a broken system imo, half the people who pre book go and sit in better walk-up areas and makes the reserve look threadbare.

Faced with Richo querying him, he says he's "done the numbers" and we have the "lowest percentage" of members attending games.

Let's check those numbers. Last year we averaged 39,218 per home game (or 42,508 excluding the Alice Springs game). Last year we had 66,484 members. That means our average home game attendance was 59% of our membership (increasing to 64% if we exclude Alice Springs).

By comparison with the other Victorian clubs:

1. Carlton's home average was 56% of its membership (49,784 out of 88,776)
2. Collingwood's was 48% (48,573 out of 100,384)
3. Richmond's was 46% (46,485 out of 100,792)
4. Essendon's was 46% (39,754 out of 81,662)
5. Geelong's was 37% (26,875 out of 71,943)
6. Hawthorn's was 33% (26,502 out of 77,079)
7. the Bulldogs' was 48% (24,655 out of 50,491)
8. St Kilda's was 42% (25,386 out of 60,172)
9. North Melbourne's was 29% (14,368 out of 50,191)

Obviously for Hawthorn, North Melbourne and the Dogs, these are affected by their 3-4 sold home games each year, same for St Kilda which like us sells 1. And obviously the size of the crowd at a game isn't purely dictated by the home team, it depends on the away team too.

But on these numbers we are not the "lowest percentage", we're the highest. And that was in a season in which we were away on the two biggest games we play, ANZAC Eve and Queen's Birthday.

I'm not sure how else you're supposed to measure the percentage of our fans who show up to games. Would love to know what "numbers" Sam McLure "did" here. Or whether perhaps he's just another typical anti-Melbourne [censored] who loves to stick the boot in for the fun of it.

Ignoring Sam McClure for the moment (or always). I think the data presented here for all Victorian clubs, except North Melbourne, is impressive. For every club (except North) to have an average home crowd of over 24,000 is quite extraordinary.

I can remember as a child growing up in the 70s looking at the newspaper summary of the weekends' games when all six were played at the same time on a Saturday. It used to include a figure showing attendances at each game with the total each round usually somewhere around 120,000 on a good weekend, so an average of 20,000 per game.

Where's Sam McClure now?

He said he expected 40,000 (before moving the needle to 42,500 after speaking with Richo).

We drew a few dozen short of 42,500 on the same day 130,000+ people went to the Grand Prix.

Would love to hear him say "good on Melbourne supporters" but no doubt we'll either hear nothing, some sort of clip that it still wasn't enough, or another snow joke.

I'm not sure the Grand Prix had much to do with 'our' supporters.

I think the point in general is that we should be seeing far more dees fans at games given we're in the prime of our years and it's unfortunate.

I watched the game on TV, (overseas atm) and to me it looked and sounded closer to a 50/50 support split. Tell me if I'm wrong and if I am, surely it would have only been 55/45 in our favour?

In my eyes, that's rubbish.

I think it's really disappointing as a club who is the premiership favourite. We know we have supporters, they always rock up in September. But it's obvious to those outside of the red and blue blinded demonland fanatics that our crowds have been disappointing. To say the least.
