Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

2023 AFLW Trade Period

I find that very interesting and a really good sign. Presumably Hawthorn wouldn't have had Maddie as a Tier 1 player, so maybe her bump was only from Tier 3 to Tier 2 - ie not enough extra money to go from a premiership contender to an also ran. Hopefully that is the case for other players, and someone is going to have to offer a Tier 1 spot to move one of our players.

I think they targetted Maddie when they first came into the comp and she knocked them back.

Not sure they tried again as part of this priority psp recruiting.

Not much action today: Carlton's former #2 pick McEvoy to Sydney.

I'd be so annoyed if I was a Carlton fan. Yes, they've lost ridiculous numbers of players over the years due to (in my view) poor investment, a part-time coach and the vicious circle of players leaving begetting more players leaving. But it's just wrong for them to have a top player poached by a team who finished a few rungs below them in the name of equalisation. That helps nothing. Probably next year, having realised this, the AFL will make a similar scheme only applicable to the top 4 or some such.

Although something I don't really see discussed is the potential comparative worth of those 2024 compensation draft picks. How does a high 2024 draft pick compare, for example, to a high 2019 draft pick (i.e., McEvoy). Taking the resources spent on the poached player out of the equation, what's the quality gap? It's not like the men's where the draft quality from year to year is fairly stable ('strong' and 'weak' draft classes notwithstanding). The development, standard of coaching, sheer numbers of minutes played as juniors, especially as we get away from the covid impacts, will surely mean there's an upward trajectory for high picks some time. Which makes the TBA nature of it all from the AFL's perspective...interesting. If they're even paying attention, which is questionable.

Anyway, 46 hours to go 🤞

Reading about the exodus of players Carlton on the AFL site. I didn’t realise the we got Tayla Harris plus pick 44 and gave them pick 32 back. That’s an out and out steal. But wait there’s more! We used pick 44 (that became 42) to get …….. Tahlia Gillard. Has to be the AFLW, all time draft steal!!

Tayla told me they delisted her, which she found pretty devastating at the time.  I'm so pleased she's happy at Melbourne, she didn't feel supported in the end at Carlton.  Her mum told me if it had've been her choice she would have preferred Tayla stay at Melbourne after the exhibition matches.

And I agree about the masterstroke of drafting Tahlia.  She's a beast!

Hopefully not jinxing anything, but it feels as though the better players will only move to weaker clubs for lifestyle reasons (eg Molloy & McEvoy to Sydney).

Perhaps we need to be more worried when the about our players making moves to other contenders if they can jump a pay grade and stay in the finals hunt.

Well I for one am glad we did not lose any players in this PSP drafting nonsense. Because that is what it is. Nonsense.  However the draft may be harder as closer clubs like Richmond or Geelong could pick up some good players. In the meantime I will believe we have a great bunch of girls that are loyal to the MFC.

We got through PSP unscathed while the Lions and Crows lost key players. Great outcome overall and testament to the strong culture and belief our list has in the club and our chances of continued success. We're in great shape. And I reckon flag favourites given how our direct rivals have been depleted.

That's great news 'BDA', looking forward to the mens season to start then more to come after that.

Let's hope it's "Back to Back" for the girls.

Summary:

  • Sydney did well in terms of quality but filled only 2 of their 5 psp spots.
  • Ess filled 1 of 2 spots but not high quailty.
  • Port filled their spots
  • Hawks got 2 excellent signings (not sure how many spots they were allowed.

Hopefully they perform much better this year so the AFL does not introduce more priorities for newbie teams as we will be the team most likely to suffer.

There is no draft to speak of for 2023 because of the 'extra' season in  2022  So the next draft of substance will be for 2024.   Brisbane and Collingwood etc will get 2024 compensation picks for the loss of their players in this psp signing.  They have lost experience and will want experience so draft picks in two years won't help cover the losses.

The risk for us is that direct competitors (Coll and Lions) have a Tier 1 vacancy which they could use to lure one of our top Tier 2 players in the upcoming trade period.  There is quite a gap in the $.  They won't have worthwhile 2023 draft picks to use and are unlikely to trade players.

However, it will be interesting to see if the AFL introduces the trading of future draft picks which will help Bris and Coll use their 2024 compensation picks in the upcoming trade period to replace lost experience.  My guess is the AFL will, otherwise those teams will be disadvantaged for a year.

So we aren't out of the woods yet...

There will be a draft, but it will be a smaller draft. It is set to occur on 4 April.

It will be a national draft in that candidates can nominate either a state of their origin or national.  Candidates must be at least 19.

All quiet on the Melbourne front but a bit of movement elsewhere in trades and de-listings. Some clubs are also starting to announce re-signings (including 19 players at Brisbane). Plus a bunch of new Irish players being signed.

Some pointed comments from the Lions coach. I would probably agree with his sentiment in his position but wouldn't be  putting it about quite like that.

I've been focused on us keeping our premiership team together, so have barely thought about the possibility of trading anyone in. Sign and trade ends Monday, so not long either way.

As it stands, we have 2 list spots, so maybe we'll de-list a few more if there's better available from the mature-age draft/de-listings... I still kinda want Duffy back!

  • Demonland changed the title to 2023 AFLW Trade Period

Holy [censored], we're going back to back. Incredible news:

AFLW Dees re-sign en masse

The entire premiership team (minus Daisy obviously), plus basically every significant player who missed out (McNamara, Colvin, etc.) have all re-committed to the Dees. What a culture they've built!

Though not finishing up as a Demon, it would be remiss of us not to mention that Elise O'Dea has retired.

(Co) captain of the club in 2019, twice all-Australian and multiple top 3 finishes in the B&F. She was one of the players that really drove this club forward in the first four seasons, but unfortunately the increased pool of talent meant that the game went past her in the end.

https://www.womens.afl/news/113200/who-s-hanging-up-the-boots-your-club-s-retiring-players

Eliza McNamara was drafted with the pick we received from Carlton for Elise, so we saw the best of her, then made the trade at the perfect time.

She served us well and I enjoyed watching her play - always gave her all. Was sorry to see her go at the time but in retrospect it was one of several trades around that time that set us up for success and showed our recruiters' savvy about the way the league was trending in talent and skills, while other clubs lagged a bit.

Just wondering if the AFLW players go and play in the VFLW or other state leagues in the AFLW off season.  I assumed they would, but I looked through the Casey VFLW squad expecting to see some familiar names and didn’t recognise any.  Looked at a few other squads and still no familiar names.  Anyone know what goes on there?

From my understanding VFLW teams can only have a limited number of players on AFLW lists playing for them.

The only thing  about Hawthorn i agreed with was their indifference towards AFLW.  Can we have a rest for 6 months during the footy season ? The motorcade last Saturday was overkill  and no-one noticed it anyway. Most fans arent interested in AFLW.

Theyre not even playing but it wont go away all year i bet.

Sick of it.

    GAMEDAY: Rd 07 vs Richmond

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
